“Ozymandias” is a sonnet - a poem with 14 lines - unusual sonnet for this era (1977) - it does not fit a conventional Petrarchan pattern (about love)

Ozymandias, symbolizes political tyranny- suggests that tyranny is temporary- unjust political leader cannot have hope to have lasting power or real influence

- being told about the statue of Ramses from someone who heard about it from a traveler undermines Ramses power over the passage of time

Broken monument also represents the decay of civilization, culture and insignificance of human beings through passage of time.
