MANAGING RESEARCH DATA

Page 13: ERIM, REDm-MED and Orbital

13 Orbital DMP Meeting 20.01.12

Why Manage Research Data?

• Because you will HAVE TO

• Because you might WANT TO

Page 14: ERIM, REDm-MED and Orbital

14 Orbital DMP Meeting 20.01.12

Needing to Manage Research Data

• Funders’ Data Management Policies

• Institutional Requirements

• FOI responses

• REF

• Publisher demands

Needing to Manage Research Data

• Funders’ Data Management Policies

• Institutional Requirements

• FOI responses

• Audit

• REF

• Publisher demands

17 Orbital DMP Meeting 20.01.12

Wanting to Manage Research Data

• Reduction in duplicated work.

• Inspiration for new/continuation research & funding.

• Basis for knowledge extraction from aggregated data.

• Greater transparency of research.

• Improved basis for validation.

• Obviating the need for re-collection and generation.

• Providing basis for reliable data citation.

• Increasing scholarly output.

Page 18: ERIM, REDm-MED and Orbital

18 Orbital DMP Meeting 20.01.12

Supporting Collaboration – reciprocal benefits

• Greater confidence in sharing data through better, more case-appropriate and more transparent security measures.

• Better access to new data or data hitherto undiscoverable.

• Reduction in data loss as a result of improvements in management throughout the data life cycle.

• Support of application for and defence of patents.

• Better understanding of good RDM practice.

• Greater clarity in IP issues.

19 Orbital DMP Meeting 20.01.12

Examples of Data Sharing Benefits I

• ‘Big Science’ data sharing is routine: space science, genomic epidemiology, biosciences, etc.

• Alzheimer’s Disease Neuro-imaging Data:160 papers published using data: 80 more are in the pipeline (Feb 2011).

• @70% increase in citations for clinical trial publications associated with making their datasets publicly available.
