About ERGT Australia

The story so far ERGT Australia is a leading commercial training organisation providing emergency response and safety-critical training to high risk industries. ERGT provides a professional, engaging and safe training service using simulated environments to develop skills and behaviours that address safety-critical industry needs. Since 1994 ERGT has built a solid reputation in providing safety training for the oil and gas industry through our people, processes, products and attention to detail. With seven major training centres located in Perth and Victoria, ERGT is well positioned to develop it’s core business (safety training?) While expanding its operations into other key oil and gas sectors. ERGT currently delivers over 15,000 training days per year and is supported by over 200 staff. ERGT believes that for continued success the company must perform at the highest possible level. Therefore ERGT has invested over $18 million in a new oil & gas training facility located in Jandakot that will be the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

ERGT plans to capitalise on its Victorian presence to expand operations to further service the east coast of Australia.

At the end of the day ERGT believes that a safe workplace is vital to improving workplace safety performance.

We use our skills as a Registered Training Organisation to ensure compliance with competency standards, but our commitment to safety requires more than just compliance. We are committed to understanding industry’s needs and are driven to go

beyond the national competency standards to ensure that we develop the right safety behaviours and critical skills in our customers. We also work on the transference of those skills into performance in the workplace, which is ultimately the point of all training.

Our commitment is not a new thing. We have been working for the Australian Oil & Gas industry since 1994. We have recently made another 35 year commitment with our new $18 million Oil & Gas Safety Training Centre at Jandakot, due to open mid-2012.

But our greatest commitment comes through the very personal obligation that we all feel – from me as Managing Director through to our newest trainers – to lead by example in our own approach to safety. Every one of us learns more every day about how we can think and act more safely and how this in turn helps our customers.

CSTPCommon Safety Training Program

Safe Supervisor Competence Program

Common Safety Training Program (CSTP) is an industry initiative administered by APPEA. This initiative has recently become an industry mandate, as is the requirement for TBOSIET/BOSIET. As of the 1st of January 2012, Australia’s oil and gas industry has adopted CSTP as a core foundation of safety skills in the workplace. The aim is to ensure all personnel working in the oil and gas industry in Australia to have been assessed as competent against defined core safety units.

Upon successful completion of the course trainees will be provided with an evidence package for their employer. Trainees are then assessed at their workplace by an independent supervisor. A CSTP Card is then issued through APPEA.

Safe Supervisor Competence Program (SSCP) is aimed at oil and gas industry leaders working on construction projects. It is designed to provide supervisors with the essential basic skills as a minimum standard of competency requirement to ensure the safety of teams and individuals through supervision. This course teaches supervisors how to put their existing skills, knowledge, judgements and abilities to supervise and lead by example through safe work behaviours. This training is carried out in a realistic replication of real life environment. Furthermore, it exercises supervisor’s hands on abilities to apply what they have learnt into the workplace.

The SSCP program covers on and off the job demonstrations, oral questioning, workbooks, role playing, group work and practical exercises conducted over a 3 day period.

The topics covered are: • Lead and develop safe teams

• Managing hazards and risks

• Managing safety

• Reporting and investigating incidents and initial emergency rescue

• Understanding and influencing safe behaviours

Upon successful completion supervisors will be provided with a certificate stating the have completed the first stage of the SSCP process.

The CSTP program covers basic theory and exercises conducted over a 3 day period.

The topics covered are: • Safety Case and Safety Management Systems

• Working under an issued Permit

• Identification of Hazards and Risks

• Contributing to safe working practices

• Control of minor incidents

• Responding to an emergency

There are two pathways available to obtain a CSTP card:

1. Training for new employees 2. Training for experienced workers Experienced workers can obtain a CSTP card through an RPL process i.e. Without attending training. Our 1 day training program is designed for those who don’t have the resources to complete RPL themselves.

Further Offshore Emergency Training/Tropical (FOET/TFOET)This course is only applicable to participants who have a current BOSIET/TBOSIET card that is within four years of expiring. This course is designed to assist in maintaining participant’s skills that are required to respond effectively to offshore incidents. The course offers a highly practical, theory reduced opportunity to practice how to respond to a helicopter incident and all components of survival at sea including fire fighting, self rescue and first aid.

Duration: 1 day.

Assessment: Trainees will demonstrate/explain/identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities.

Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET)/Tropical BOSIET (TBOSIET)BOSIET/TBOSIET courses are a minimum requirement for offshore work. Courses are OPITO certified and successful completion results in an internationally recognised certification. The courses consist of five parts; safety induction, helicopter safety and escape (HUET), sea survival, fire fighting and self rescue. The difference between TBOSIET and BOSIET is that TBOSIET is designed for tropical climates. The TBOSIET does not include the cold water element of the full BOSIET course (survival suits and emergency breathing systems are not used during the HUET training). The courses are OPITO certified courses and successful completion means an internationally recognised certification.

Duration: 2 days (BOSIET) 2.5 days (TBOSIET).

Assessment:Trainees will demonstrate/explain/identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities.

Undertake Helicopter Safety and Escape (HUET)This course teaches the practical skills needed to ensure safe abandonment in the event of a helicopter ditching in water, whether it be controlled or uncontrolled.

Duration: 1 day.

Assessment:Trainees will demonstrate, explain and identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities. Assessment for this unit of competency will involve helicopter ditching simulations.

Certification: On successful completion trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in PMAOHS214B Undertake Helicopter Safety and Escape.

Facility Abandonment (FAB)This course gives trainees the skills to undergo safe abandonment of any offshore facility. FAB covers the processes in both controlled and uncontrolled abandonment, from how to respond to an alarm, equipment familiarisation and musters, to what evacuation systems i.e. Lifeboats or individual descent devices and the methods you may be required to use and how to survive once evacuation has occurred.

Duration: 6 hours.

Assessment: Trainees will demonstrate, explain and identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities. Assessment for this unit of competency will involve an abandonment simulation.

Certification: On successful completion of this Unit of Competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in PMAOHS215B Apply Offshore Facility Abandonment and Sea Survival Procedures and Practices.

CS Core Safety

Common Safety Training Program/Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training Combined (CSTP/BOSIET combined)This is a blended course which teaches all the skills required for travelling offshore, with a specific focus on behavioural and contextual safety. Both TBOSIET and CSTP are a minimum requirement for anyone working offshore and blending them not only saves trainees a full day of training, but gives them a more intensive and rewarding learning experience. Trainees leave the course with a sound knowledge on practical, theoretical and behavioural components to offshore safety and survival.

Work Safely at Heights (WSAH)This course gives trainees the ability to work at a height or depth safely and prevent incidents from occurring. Trainees will be taught how to identify work requirements, work procedures, equipment installation, performing work at heights and cleaning of the work area.

Duration: 1 day.

Assessment:Assessment of underpinning knowledge will be by way of oral questioning and written assessment. Trainees will also be required to demonstrate competence through practical scenarios simulating work tasks at height.

Certification: On successful completion of this course, trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in RIIOHS204A Work safely at heights.

Applied SafetyApplied safety courses build on the skills developed in the core safety programs providing specialist skills for individuals and teams working in high-risk environments.

Enter Confined Space (ECS)Working in confined spaces is one of the most high risk tasks on offshore facilities. This course provides trainees with the opportunity to practice CSE in simulated environments, giving them the knowledge to identify potential CSE tasks and the associated risks as well as preventive safety measures to ensure a safe working environment for the trainees and their team. The skill learnt will be critical in a trainee’s ability to approach tasks safely.

Duration: 2 days.

Assessment:Assessment of underpinning knowledge will be by way of oral questioning and completion of a workbook. Trainees will also be required to demonstrate competence through practical scenarios simulating work tasks requiring entry to a confined space.

Certification:On successful completion of this course, trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in MSAPMPER205B Enter Confined Space and MSAPMPER200B Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit.

Gas Test Atmospheres (GTA)Trainees working on a production facility will be working in close proximity to pressure vessels and pipe work containing flammable gas. Fixed automatic monitoring systems aboard offshore facilities are in place to provide continuous safety surveillance, but for specific tasking and some general work practices trainees will be provided with a personal gas detector to maximise safety. GTA gives trainees the understanding and skills to safely conduct testing and interpret readings.

Duration: 1 day.

Assessment: Assessment of underpinning knowledge will be by way of oral questioning and through the completion of a workbook. Trainees will also be required to demonstrate competence through practical scenarios requiring gas-testing techniques.

Certification: On successful completion trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in MSAPMOHS217A Gas Test Atmospheres.

Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO)Helicopter travel is the main mode of transport to an offshore facility. Helicopter Landing Officer training is required to help guide the safe landing of a helicopter, the ability to relay weather conditions to the pilot and the skills to safely guide passengers and luggage off the landing platform.

Duration: 1 day.

Assessment: Trainees will demonstrate, explain and identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities. Assessment for this unit will involve simulated scenarios involving helicopter operations.

Certification: On successful completion trainees will be issued with a Certificate of Training in Helicopter Landing Officer.

Applied SafetyAS

Permit To Work/Job Hazard Analysis (PTW/JHA) Risk assessment is crucial in the offshore environment. This course(s) give trainees the skills to identify potential hazards, break them down into risks and consequences and find a safe way to avoid and remove hazards. PTW and JHA provide the ability to assess risks and the skills to apply their learning to their specific workplace scenarios.

Duration: 1 day and ½ day.

Assessment:Trainees will demonstrate, explain and identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities.

Certification: On successful completion of this Unit of Competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in RIIRIS201Conduct Local Risk Control.

IRIncident Response

Incident Response courses build on skills developed in the core safety programs to provide specialist skills for teams and those members responsible for responding to emergencies.

Confined Space Rescue (CSR)Whilst working in confined spaces is a high risk task, a rescue operation from a confined space is complex and extremely risky. This course provides trainees who work as part of an Emergency Response Team (ERT) with practice in a simulated work environment that mimics a real offshore incident. Being part of an ERT means obtaining a sound skill set which can be practically applied in real-life incidents and trainees are equipped with the skills to assess, decide and respond to a confined space incident.

Duration: 1 day.

Assessment:Participants will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions recorded in a participant handbook and practical exercises as appropriate.

Certification: On successful completion of the learning outcomes participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for PUASAR025A Undertake Confined Space Rescue.

Fire Team Member Oil & Gas (FTMOG) Responding to fire incidents offshore is a high risk task that requires specialist training. This course gives trainees the basic skills for assessing, controlling and extinguishing fires offshore, from donning PPE to basic rescue skills. Trainees will walk away with a sound knowledge and capability to control an incident and protect all persons involved.

Duration: 3 days.

Assessment: Participant’s learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions and/or use of a workbook and practical exercises as appropriate.

Certification: On successful completion of all assessments participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in:• PMAOHS213B Undertake Fire Control and

IRIncident Response

Emergency Response Team Leader (ERTL)This course is designed to give trainees the ability to lead and coordinate an emergency response team, including deployment of resources at the scene of an emergency. Personnel undertaking this unit of competency would be normally nominated to assume the responsibility of emergency team leader. Emergency Response Team Leader’s are the key link between an ER team responding to the incident and the OSC.

Rescue from Heights (RFH)This course gives trainees the ability to practice, learn and plan the response procedure when someone has fallen whilst working at heights. This course is relevant to individuals that are a part of an emergency response team (ERT) or your job involves working at heights.

Duration: 1 day.

Assessment: This is a not to competency training course. Trainees demonstrate practical skills in informatively assessed guided practice scenarios. There is no collection and verification of individual trainee knowledge, though there is continuous verbal questioning and verification of trainees’ knowledge and understanding on a group basis.

Certification: On successful completion of this course trainees will receive a Certificate of Training.

Duration: 3 days.

Assessment: Trainees learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions and/or written questions recorded in a participant handbook and practical exercises as appropriate.

Certification:On successful completion of this unit of competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in PMAOHS311B Lead Emergency Teams.Note: Trainees unable to meet course prerequisites will only be issued with a Certificate of Training and will be unable to participate in some practical scenarios.

Carry Out Fast Rescue Craft Operations (FRC)This course aims to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively launch, operate and recover a Fast Rescue Craft. FRC provides training in a range of different environments as well as providing all the required skills, such as deployment and signalling.

Duration: 3 days.

Assessment: Trainees will demonstrate, explain and identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities. Assessment for this Unit of Competency will involve an operation of a fast rescue boat.

Certification: On successful completion of this unit of competence, trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for TDMMF4307B Carry out Fast Rescue Craft Operations STCW 95 Min Standard of Competency in Fast Rescue Boats. Trainees who currently hold a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats will also qualify for the Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats.

Incident Command Team TrainingDuration: 2 or 3 days, depending on team size

Course Aim: This course is designed for new members of an Emergency Command Centre, to receive training on effective management of incident-related information received during an incident or emergency, to the competency standard PMAOMIR320B Manage Incident Response Information.

Course Objective: Through instruction and practical demonstration of effective management of incident-related information, course delegates will demonstrate ability to effectively coordinate resources to support an asset or facility during an incident as part of an Emergency Command Team in a designated Command Centre or Control Room.

Course Aim: This course is designed for members of a Crisis Management Team that is managing the corporate response for an organisation during an incident through effective coordination of people, resources, financial, legal and stakeholder management.

Course Objective: Through instruction and practical demonstration of effective management of incident-related information, course delegates will demonstrate the ability to effectively manage the corporate responsibilities during critical events that may impact the company’s reputation, commercial viability or incidents that may incur significant liability. Corporate Incident Management Systems - ExercisesExercises: The importance of organisation’s practicing their Corporate Incident Management plan cannot be overstated. Personnel are able to consolidate their understanding of the plan, identify deficiencies and recommend solutions to further enhance the response to personnel directly affected by the event.Practicing the Incident Management Plan is principally to ensure that it has the best and most effective procedures in place if an incident were to occur. The team must also take care of the organisation’s reputation and ongoing organisational sustainability; whether it is how they handle the media, the relatives, the environmental issues or the incident itself.

Experiential training builds trust and recognition between all participants from the site of the incident to the incident teams, external agencies, Regulators and Government Departments. It is a rehearsal for the ‘real thing’. Incident training should involve multi-level participation, ensuring that incident management team members partake in problem solving exercises and become familiar with their roles in a structured learning environment. The training will simulate a range of probable major accident events or high potential incidents.
