Dr. Moosa is a regular at Sa-raswathi Kendra LearningCentre for Children. As heenters the class, the chil-

dren crowd around him, excitedand a little scared. He sits downand waits patiently as they ap-proach him. Hi! My name is Ash-ok, one of the boys says shyly, adding I like dosa. Do you likedosa? Moosa holds out a pawand someone at the back says,He likes Dosa too.

Dr. Moosa is a black Labrador.Saraswathi Kendra Learning

Centre for Children, a part of theC.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Founda-tion, is Indias first full-timeschool for children with autism, learning disabilities, dyslexia andbehaviour and habit disorders. Itprovides a range of innovativetherapies for its 175-odd studentsand one of it is animal-assistedtherapy for autistic children. And

what better animal to work withthan mans best friend?

Autistic children have an in-ability to communicate verballyand concentrate on one particu-lar thing. Some of them nevertalk. But when there is a dog, theyfeel a lot more at ease. We talk

through the dog and encouragethe children to reply. This not on-ly improves their verbal commu-nication but they also learn toconcentrate. We have found it tobe more effective than traditionaltherapy, says Marlene J. Kam-dar, the principal.

Dr. Dog has been around for13-odd years and remains a high-ly successful method even today.Dr. Moosa is the seventh on call. One among the therapys bestsuccess stories hangs in the frontoffice of the school in the form ofa framed chart with the childishdrawing of a Dachshund, 10scrawling lines written in sketch

pen describing it and Pet Ther-apy with Sachin written in bigbold letters at the top. Sachin isa little Dachshund puppy Hehas a body like a sausage... itgoes. It was written by an autisticboy who, after nine years of si-lence, spoke about Sachin the

first ever time he spoke. You cant have this kind of

success with other animals. Buteven with dogs, the best breeds to

work with are Labradors and re-trievers. Theyre naturally friend-ly dogs. The smaller breeds areunpredictable and though we did

work with two Dachshunds, labsare the best, Dr. Nanditha Krish-nan, Hon. Director, CPR Founda-tion, says.

Dr. Dog sessions are two timesa week for about 45 minutes. It ison a one-on-one basis and thedog works with three or four kidsevery class. During the course thestudent works with dogs in aplanned way to increase desir-

    able abilities.Saraswathi Kendra, in associa-

tion with Blue Cross, certifiesthese dogs and trains them foruse in other special schoolsacross the city.

We encourage volunteers too.People can bring in their dog to

work with us for the Dr. Dog pro-

gramme. The dog has to be mmum two years old, heavaccinated and must have bobedience skills. A lot of pehave volunteered in the pastthey drop out soon becauseinsist that the dogs have tosterilised to prevent aggress

But its imperative because mistake could cost the dog the child their life, Nandexplains.

As Dr. Moosa leaves the cthe kids protest for a few min

and then watch as their doctled away by his handler.

This helps them learn togo, Nanditha concludes, addBut I must tell you that thesomething about a dog makes the child talk. No knows how or why. But it happens.

Recession hits Queen hardThe worst economic recession in generations has seen the Britishmonarch loosing 1.3 billion pounds from the value of her assets inthe property market collapse, according to a news report. The Crown Estate, which supervises Queen Elizabeths land andproperty empire, slumped in value from 7.3 billion pounds to 6billion pounds in the year to March. The 18 per cent decline in itspotential asking price was the first since 1993, the Daily Mailreported. The Crown Estates annual report showed that the value of itsassets, which excludes Queen Elizabeths privately-held royalpalaces, have been hit badly by falling office and retail rents in therecession. The British Queen received more than 500,000 euros in European

agricultural subsidies in 2008.According to figures released by the department of rural affairs(Defra), the monarch - who is Britains 214th richest personaccording to the Sunday Times Rich List - received 473,583.31pounds (about 700,000 dollars, 530,000 euros) for her farm atSandringham. Her eldest son, Prince Charles, received 95,222.56 pounds for hisDuchy of Cornwall, and 86,262.98 for the Duchys farm - a total of181,485.54 pounds.

canines. Geetika Nigam, thewoman behind the initiative, saidthe birth of the website - with thetagline its a dog meet dog

In the grooming centre I cameacross a lot of dog owners dis-traught over finding a suitablemate for their pet. They usually

went through two channels - ei-ther through their vets whothemselves have a limited circleof people or newspaper ads

which they didnt entirely relyon, Nigam said.

So while Neemo is a four-year-old male cocker spaniel from

Gurgaon, fit banda Brownie, agolden retriever, prefers not todisclose his location. MumbaikarShelly, a Labrador, is looking for aplay mate. So if anyone is inter-ested, they can add these ca-nines owners to their buddy listand get in touch.

Most of my clientele in thegrooming centre are from the ex-pat community. But puppylove-.com got some 1,000 usersregistered in the first week itselffrom amongst a wide range ofpeople. That egged me to addmore information on the site andmake it more fun, said Nigam.

he next time you surf the In-ternet, you may bump into aNobel Peace Prize candi-

date. A US security experthas proposed the honour for mi-cro-blogging site Twitter, whichhelped protesters in Iran beatcensorship and tell their tale tothe world.

The free social messaging util-ity uniquely documented andpersonalised the story of hope, heroism and horror in Iran, saysMark Pfeifle, former deputy na-tional security adviser for strateg-ic communications and globaloutreach at the US National Se-curity Council.

The video gave substance towhat seemed so far away. We sawthe look in her eyes as they wentlifeless. We heard the sounds of

her friends and family as theybegged her to hold on. And shebecame the personification of the

struggle for democracy in a coun-try where voices for freedom arequelled, Pfeifle wrote in TheChristian Science Monitor this

    week.Her name was Neda Agha-Sol-

tan, and without Twitter wemight never have known that shelived in Iran, that she dreamed ofa free Iran, and that she died in adivided Iran for her dreams.

Neda became the voice of amovement; Twitter became themegaphone. Twitter is a free so-cial messaging utility. It drovepeople around the world to pic-tures, videos, sound bites, andblogs in a true reality show of life, dreams, and death. Last months

marches for freedom and the vio-lent crackdowns were not onlydocumented but personalised in-

to a story of mythic tragedy. The article titled A NobelPeace Prize for Twitter? notesthat when journalists were forcedto leave Iran, Twitter became awindow for the world to viewhope, heroism, and horror. It be-came the assignment desk, thereporter, and the producer. And,because of this, Twitter and itscreators are worthy of being con-sidered for the Nobel PeacePrize.

Is it a bit of a far-fetched pro-posal or merely a nice headline?

Well, Pfeifle is fully serious.I first mentioned this idea

while being interviewed on a ca-ble news programme. Many

scoffed. Thats understandable. But think about what Twitter hasaccomplished: It has empowered

people to attempt to resolve a do-mestic showdown with interna-tional implications - and hasenabled the world to stand withthem. It laid the foundation topressure the world to denounceoppression in Iran.

As many people in Iran cameout on the streets against whatthey saw as fraud in the presiden-tial elections last month, 140characters were enough to shinea light on Iranian oppression andelevate Twitter to the level ofchange agent. Even the govern-ment of Iran has been forced toutilise the very tool they attempt-ed to squelch to try to hold on topower.

Without Twitter, the articlgues, the world might hknown little more than a lo

candidate accusing the pothat be of alleged fraud. WTwitter, they now shout h

with a passion and dedicthat resonates not just with thon their street but with millacross the globe.

Twitter and other social moutlets have become the

weapons of democracy. Twtold us the story of Nedaspreme sacrifice.

It is telling the story of thenian people yearning to brefree.

For those reasons, Twitterserves consideration for the bel Peace Prize.

Actor Mithun Chakraborty once played under Sunil Gavas-kar against the West Indies and got the wicket of Gordon Gree-nidge. Gavaskar recommended Arjuna Ranatungas name forcaptaincy to the then Sri Lanka President.

A self-confessed Gavaskar fan, virtuoso singer Manna Dey has dedicated asong to the batting great.

These are some of the nuggets from Sunil Gavaskar, Crickets Little Master, abook put together by seasoned cricket journalist Debasish Datta to markGavaskars 60th birthday on Friday. Former England opener GeoffreyBoycott has written the foreword of the book, the theme of which is60 years, 100 tributes. This book is going to be a treasure-troveabout one of the best batsmen cricket has ever seen,Datta said.

West Indian legend Sir Garfield Sobers pennedthe first article before others joined in, payingglowing tributes to Gavaskar. The anthology, to bepublished by Niyogi Books, would shed light onmany little known aspects of Gavaskars illustri-ous life, Datta said.

Sachin Tendulkar too swaps the bat for thepen to elaborate why Gavaskar will always re-main his hero. In the book, former Pakistancaptain Wasim Akram laments not gettingGavaskars wicket in Test cricket, while WestIndian legend Vivian Richards elaborates on

how the Indian tortured the bowlers in theCaribbean.Fellow West Indian Andy Roberts claims

it was he who had informed Gavaskarabout the Calypso written on him, whilethe actual writer, Lord Relator, alsoshares his admiration for the Indian. I

would rather call it a bouquet, collectingcontributory articles from his familymembers, boyhood friends, cricketersboth past and current, celebrities fromother world and renowned cricketscribes from all over the world, .Datta said.

detailed and copious forms that ICC had sent out to all the countries bidding for the World Cup. There was consternation in ranks when we -- SrLanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan -- pointed out that our joint bid was bound to hit the rocks because India had not remotely completed the datarequired by the ICC.

five years old. Chanels Coco Mademoi-selle, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue,

Beautiful by Estee Lauder, Donna Ka-ran Cashmere Mist and that resilientoctogenarian Chanel No. 5 were the topdepartment-store sellers for this yearsfirst quarter, NPD said. In fact, at theParis Fashion Week on Tuesday night, giant replicas of the distinctive ChanelNo. 5 perfume bottles towered over therunway at Karl Lagerfelds haute cou-ture a timely reminder of the reliablerevenue for fashion houses from scent,

which Coco Chanel was one of the firstto understand.

Good scents, small sizesBut Grant says women are less in-

terested in fragrance today than a dec-ade ago when signature scents likeHappy by Clinique and Chance by Cha-

nel reigned. Fragrance has becomeoptional, she said. The attitude is,

why bother? The fragrances themselves may be

partly responsible, she added. Once thehigh-octane scents of the 80s evaporat-ed, fragrances became lighter, and,Grant said, perhaps they trained usnot to smell scent.

Teenagers and young women seemparticularly indifferent. They may havesnapped up fragrances that come inclever packages, like Ed Hardy and Ha-rajuku Lovers, but theres little loyaltyto a single fragrance. Fragrance isntpart of their lifestyle, so the industry is

    A

winning fragrance is magical sosensuous, transporting or just

plain special that its irresistible. So irresistible that in recent

years fragrance manufacturers, eager tosniff out the next classic, have intro-duced an average of 250 scents annual-ly about one for every business day, industry observers say. And those are

just the fragrances sold at departmentstores.

A hit, after all, can mean a huge win.Sales of Jennifer Lopez Glow, credited

with igniting the mania for celebrityscents, reached $100 million in 2002,the year it was introduced, said CarlosTimiraos, a vice president for market-ing at Coty which launched the scent.

But these days, the sweet smell ofsuccess is proving elusive as customers

    walk away from fragrance counters

empty-handed. While department storesales of beauty products fell 3 percentin dollars in 2008 a drop credited tothe recession the decline was mostprofound in the fragrance industry, ac-cording to NPD Group, a market re-search firm. It said $2.68 billion wasspent on fragrance, down 6 percentfrom 2007.

The drop is even more notable whenthe rise in fragrance prices is taken intoaccount, said Allan Mottus, an industryanalyst, who estimates that unit salesdropped 10 percent to 12 percent last

year. Its like the movie industry, wherea jump in ticket prices obscures a dropin the number of tickets sold. Amongthe losers? Those celebrity scents,

which fell around 20 percent, Mottus

said.Yet fragrances troubles go far deeper

than a recessionary dip. Fragrancesales have never rebounded to what wesaw before 9/11, said Karen Grant, ananalyst with NPD.

    Too many smells

All those new fragrances are in part toblame for the industrys woes. Fra-grance today is sold more widely thanever, especially when specialty-storescents like Gap Close and niche fra-grances sold at health food stores, spasand online sites like Luckyscent.comare counted, making the number ofnewcomers swell to about 1,000 a year.Theres way too much stuff out there, said Robin Krug, who edits Now SmellThis, a fragrance blog. I dont knowhow youre supposed to know aboutthem all.

The number of new fragrances at de-partment stores has, in fact, droppedthis year, by about 50 percent for thefirst quarter of 2009, compared with thesame time last year, in part due to the

costs. To create and market a fragrancemade from scratch costs about $20 mil-lion. Flora by Gucci and Marc JacobsLola are among the years few newcom-ers. But new products are still prolifer-ating, like limited-edition scents, including Tommy Girl Summer, or spi-noffs of established fragrances calledflankers, like Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte.Instead of taking 24 months to developit, they do it in 8 months, 9 months, 11months, said Rochelle Bloom, presi-dent of the Fragrance Foundation, atrade group.

Yet the fragrances that consistentlyturn up on the best-seller list are at least

competing with video games and iPodsfor their dollars, Mottus said.

The introduction of smaller bottleslast year with the debuts of Estee Laud-ers Sensuous and Harajuku Lovers wasa bright spot, and has been picked upby many others. The lower price be-tween $30 and $50 made the fragranc-es attractive to recession-conscious

buyers. On the other end of the spec-trum, sales of fragrances $100 and uprose 10 percent in the first quarter of2009, according to NPD. Included aresmall-batch perfumes like FredericMalle, Serge Lutens and Heeley, withcult-like appeal for fragrance fanatics, afast-growing contingent thanks to therise in fragrance blogs.

A moment in a bottleUltimately, the recession is causing

the industry to take stock, and somebelieve needed change may occur. Wehave to make sure what we bring tomarket is meaningful and relevant, said Veronique Gabai-Pinsky, presidentof the Aramis and Designer Fragrancedivision of Estee Lauder.

Some think this is the perfect time forthe industry to get back to the essenceof fragrance: its emotional wallop.Marketers should help consumers learnto connect a fragrance to a special mo-ment, said Rachel Herz, author of TheScent of Desire: Discovering our Enig-matic Sense of Smell. She suggests theyfind a way to persuade consumers tobuy a new fragrance to celebrate an im-portant event. Every time you put it on

youll remember that fantastic honey-moon in Hawaii, she said.

And maybe then the fragrance indus-try can get its magic back.

    NYT News Service

While fragrance counters see few customers nowadays, perfume loyaltyhas also taken a beating. Are there too many scents to choose from?

She stated on the social network site Twitter that the moment was too emotional forher to be at her best, the New York Daily News reports.

She said: Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me, I could barely keep myself fromcrying. Im sorry that I wasnt able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literallychoked up when I saw him there in front of me.
