Harry Potters fans in the city,

who pre-ordered J.K.Row-lings The Tales of the Beetleand the Bard, the prequel to

the Harry Potter series, were left stu-pefyed on Thursday after bookstores called them up to say that thebooks had not arrived on the launchday.

The book was released at mid-night on December 4 worldwide andis likely to arrive in the book storesin the city on Friday.

Penguin Books India Private Lim-ited were yet to deliver the books tothe citys bookstores. Landmark, among other bookstores in the city, had received advance bookings

from nearly 1,000 fans. They had tocall each customer personally andtell them that the books wouldnt bereleased on Thursday, leaving many

    fuming.The customers, who had booked

in advance, were very unhappyabout the whole thing, said Madhu, head of books section at Landmark, said. We called them individuallyand assured them that the books

will reach them by Friday. We haveordered books from our store in oth-er cities and will have stocks byThursday night. Penguin has in-

formed us that they willbe delivering the booksearly Friday morning.

We are yet to hear any-thing about an earlierdelivery. And its not

just Chennai wherethere has been a delay.

    Apart from Bombay,Bangalore and Delhi,

where Penguin has amajor market, thebooks have not beendelivered on time toother cities likeLucknow.

Penguin Books, onenquiry, reasoned thedelay on an accident

and said Chennai wasthe only city to not re-ceive the books onlaunch day. We hadarranged for a separatelorry to take the booksto Chennai, since wehad the largest numberof bookings from there.Unfortunately, the lorrymet with an accidentnear Bhopal and we

couldnt make it on time. But theconsignment has been sent fromBombay by flight and will hit thebookstores by late Thursday eve-ning. Im confident that the books

will be available for sale by Fridaymorning. It has released everywhere

else and the delay to Chennai wasunfortunate, said Desh Kumar,Sales Manager, Penguin Books In-dia.

To meet and part is the way of life, but to part anmeet is the hope of life. And, BITSians (studenof BITS Pilani) know that very well. Every yea

when the winter chill comes down upon Chennai, former students of the prestigious college maksure they relive their good old days spent in the colege with an annual get-together they host.

Tomorrow (December 6), 100-odd families are expected to attend the alumni meet, some even cominfrom other metros. Apart from giving one the chancto meet ones room mom, book mom and IDgrandson, the reunion has its own speciality eac

year. Sometime batches as old as 1970s (some whose children are BITSians now) come to relive thold days.

However, one of this years highlights is the perfo

mance by the Music Club, whose band members aralumni of the 70s batch. After competitions durincollege days, the members once again get to showcastheir musical prowess.

College days are always memorable, but nothinlike putting on your professors shoes and taking class for them.

    S. Malolan (nicknamed Malo), Mechanical Engneer, 88 Batch, currently working as a director at Cognizant, recalls one such experience. After about 1

years after my graduation, I handled a training sessioon Six Sigma at BITS for its faculty and other UGmembers from various other premier institutes oDecember 27, 2005. The memories still remain etcheon my end a memorable experience of teaching mown faculty on my college premises.

Although the event is just for a few hours, orgnising and corresponding for D-day is a task thastarts well in advance.

For example, Raghu Rajagopal is getting more entrepreneurs to the meet. The alumni meet springs many surprises, too. Sr

kant Krishnamurthy, one of the co-ordinators, remembers the 2001 meet as the best he has been toWe had the 1962 and 2000 batches attending threunion, he says.

It is mix of the old and new that makes reunioneven more nostalgic.

    Big Story04

This man will always - always un-derlined in black - crush yourtoes. Not once, not twice but ev-ery single time he decides to walkout of the row. God knows how

he knows exactly where your toeis. By the time the movie ends, youll be the proud owner of the worlds sorest toe.

The late comerThis one is the most annoying

kind of all. Not only will he insiston coming late to every singlemovie, stand exactly in front of

you to gauge how late he is, he will also insist that you updatehim on every single second ofthose ten minutes he missed, making you miss thirty more inthe process.

The chatterboxEver wondered if you could

    A

ll of us have those bad mo-vie days when our seem-

ingly stress busting visit tothe theatre turns out to bemore stressful than mortally pos-sible. No, its not because the mo-vie is bad but because of thoseannoying people around you whoare committed to making it theworst experience of your life.

    The KnuckleCracker

This guy needs to be lecturedabout the ill-effects of knucklecracking. Not only will you be lis-tening to this never ending, teethcrunching sound, but because heis right next to you and is blissful-ly immersed in the movie, yourconcentration will always be bor-

dering on when the next crack isdue to arrive!

    The Thumb Pusher

You are intently watching a ro-mantic scene and a sudden flashof light sends you reeling back toreality. As you turn, you find yourneighbour punching away inces-santly at the keypad of his phone. The light on his mobile keepsblinking on and off, making youcolour blind and all you want todo is trample his phone intopieces.

Romeo and JulietThese couples are everywhere:

in front of you, at your side, be-hind you, three rows away. Butno matter where they sit, theymake sure they are noticed.

Whether its the creaking of thechair or the sudden occurrence of

disturbing sounds, they are cer-tainly an eyeful to watch. And so-metimes theyre more interestingthan the movie itself. Talk aboutromantic comedies!

The muncherHis sole aim of coming to a mo-

vie is to eat, eat, eat and did Imention eat? He will enter with abag of popcorn and a coke, orderfor a puff, a pastry and a sand-

wich during the interval andagain have French fries and burg-er delivered to him an hour later.

You are tempted to steal a cornfrom his bucket when hes notlooking but decide against it as

    you hear him burp loudly.

The toe crusherThe innate ability to crush so-

meones toe is admirable only ifits your enemys and not yours.

choke someone just enougkill their vocal chords? Youretainly not alone! Some pehave this unending desire toloudly during movies, eithe

the phone or directly to you. Tchoose that particular momereveal their innermost secnone of which you care abright then.

The spoilerLast but certainly not the l

he is the king of annoying peoThis specimen would haveready watched the movie andstead of shutting up and le

you watch in peace, he will don and on about the movie, etively spoiling the thrill of it

will also tell you how the mends just seconds before thebiting climax finishes, ma

you wish you could bite his hoff instead!

Ergo readers on the movie-going experience that didntgo as pleasantly as expected:

    Angry in the movie

Oh, Boy!I had this experience while watching Gandhi, MyFather in a theatre in Bombay. The movie had a drysubject (but a brilliant screenplay) and just behind mewas a bunch of boys in the age group of 15-20. Theywere not interested in the movie. They were makinglewd comments and it irritated me the most.

Family problemsGoing to the theatre to see a movie the very thoughtsets many curves straight and brings a smile on the facefor many. Here I would like to narrate a harrowingincident at an open air theatre. My Saturday eveningwas spoilt by huge families that were seated around mein the gallery where I was seated. What a fun-lovinggroup they were! Neither did they watch the movie nor

did they let me do the same. With children jumpingaround, women gossiping on the sides and theirhubbies puffing away amidst their business talks. Thatmade me remember what we, as a group of friends, would do in a theatre. There are always flipsides towhat we term enjoyment. Crazy, isnt it?

Recap, please! It happened way back in 2000. Mybrother and I were fond of ManiRatnam movies. I was studying inClass X then, so it was very hard toget permission from my parents

for a movie. At last, on a Sunday, Iwas permitted to go to a film.It was the timeAlaipayutheyreleased. The songs were a hit.The crowd was swarming into thelittle theatre where the movie gotreleased in Tirunelveli. Me and my

    brother fought at ticket counters

to get the tickets. At last we werethere to see our favouritedirectors movie. The movie started. That was thefirst day. We were watching quiteintently, when a family came inwith a screaming one-year-old tosit near us. Right from the timethe man was seated, he startedbothering me. He never botheredabout my replies. He kept asking aseries of questions. He wasprobably a high school teacher. Isthe Snehithane song alreadyover, Did Shalini leaveMadhavan? Why is he searchingfor her?, What happened to theEndrendrum punnagai song?,What was the introduction scene

for the new hero? blah, blah, blah. He ruined the whole evening and,to our frustration, he even gavehis screaming little devil to us. Iwill never forget that incident.

    B. Bragadeesh Prasanna

Fight clubThis happened in PVR Delhi. Three of my brothers and I werecomfortably seated in our allotted seats. Suddenly, one couple cameand asked us to adjust with them since they didnt have adjacenttickets. We declined the offer. The guy then started threatening usand eventually held my brothers shirt collar. Then the whole fightstarted and before the movie could even start we were sitting outsidePVR thinking what wrong we did to be outside.

Not time for cricket yetIt is not the time to cheer the cricket yet.Despite the fact that Mumbai has

sprung back to normalcy, the scares of theterror will take some more time to heal. They were not only created by terroristsbut also by politicians. The inefficientcoast-guards, the under-trained police, the under-paid commandos and the abso-lute lack of communication and co-oper-

ation between intelligence and securityagencies are all because of the corrupt pol-iticians. The defect in the entire system iscruelly coming to light which scares useven more. India is so vast and to feel se-cure in it, actions at M..A Chidambaramstadium do not matter, but actions by P.Chidambaram matter.

Veteran England football star DavidBeckham is still hoping to add to the107 international appearanceswhich have made him his countrys

third most capped player. But I take eachgame as it comes, he told a press confe-rence in Auckland on Thursday ahead ofhis LA Galaxys exhibition match againstan Oceania All Stars team on Saturday. Its important that I keep my fitness upand thats one of the reasons Im going toMilan for a few months.

Beckham is going to AC Milan in Janu-ary on loan for a two- to three-monthstint during the Galaxys off-season. TheGalaxys last match was in late Octoberand Beckham was left out of the Englandsquad for last months friendly againstGermany because coach Fabio Capellodeemed him not match-fit. The 33-year-old former England skipper needs onlyone more appearance to equal BobbyMoores 108 caps, the highest for an out-fielder.

    Elusive Shiltons record

Goalkeeper Peter Shilton holds the rec-

ord for the most England appearanceswith 125 caps. Despite Beckhams hopesto keep playing, he was happy to talkabout how he wanted to be remembered.Ive always wanted to be known as ahard worker on the field and successful,he told a news conference. I believe Ivealways worked hard in every game andevery training session that I take part in. Ifeel Ive done everything to be successfulin each club that Ive been at, he said. Ijust want to be successful with the Galaxynow.

Beckham joined US Major League Soc-cer last year on a five-year contract re-portedly worth 250 million US dollarsafter making his name at ManchesterUnited and Real Madrid.

His Galaxy team is on its second visit toNew Zealand in a year, last Decemberbeating the Wellington Phoenix in an ex-hibition match which attracted more than31,000 fans.

    Strauss says players happy

to returnContrary to media reports, England batsmanAndrew Strauss claimed his teammates arehappy to be returning to India for the two-Test series later this month, notwithstandingthe Mumbai terror attacks. Strauss, a part ofthe England squad which flies to Abu Dhabion Thursday to get some practice ahead of theTest series, said it was only natural that theplayers thought of their families soon after theattacks, which saw them returning homeabandoning the last two ODIs against India. To begin with there was a lot of shock andemotion as it seemed close to home. That wasthe hotel we stayed in before and we weredue to again. When things like that happen, you think about being with yourfamily and crickets not such a

priority, Strauss told BBC. Withthe dust gradually settling down,Strauss said it was the rightdecision to resume the tour. But after a few days to letthings settle down, weve beenable to look at things logicallyand objectively it seems theright thing to do for the game of cricket, hesaid.Vouching that his teammates share the samefeeling, the Middlesex opener said, Theplayers Ive spoken to have been in the sameframe of mind as me. Incidentally, mediareports earlier claimed the trio of SteveHarmison, Andrew Flintoff and Graeme Swannwere reluctant to tour India after the Mumbaiterror strikes.

China offers pieces of BirdsNest as souvenirBeijing has started selling souvenir sets of left-over grass and steel from its famed Birds NestOlympic stadium for 2,900 yuan(420 dollars) each, Chinese mediareported on Thursday. The packs include grass cut onthe night of the Games closingceremony, preserved in a clearbox, and model Olympic torchesmade of steel that was not usedfor construction of the NationalStadium, the Beijing News said. There are 10,000 souvenir sets available for saleinside the Birds Nest, as well as variousdepartment stores around Beijing and online, the report said.

The Birds Nest, which seats 91,000 people, became the symbol of the Games held inAugust in Chinas capital, attracting worldwideattention for its striking design of interlockingsteel girders. It hosted the Olympics openingand closing ceremonies, as well as athleticscompetition and football final. It has sinceproved a hit with tourists, attracting 60,000visitors on its October 1 opening day, andthousands of people every day since. But thevenue has also attracted controversy due tocharges of 50 yuan (7.3 dollars) for a tourinside, which some locals and sections of thestate-run press have said are too high.

They (Newcastle United fans) kept chanting disgusting words, racistwords about Islam and unfortunately, this is the second time that the

same fans have done this.It happened again because after the first time theEnglish FA did nothing.

    Middlesbroughs Egyptian striker Mido

Salgaocar Sports Club mayhave lost their place in Indiaselite club competition I-League, but the Goan side are

reaping rich benefits of operating a

vigorous youth development pro-gramme over the last couple of

    years.Coached by former footballer

Succour Vaz, the under-15 side wonthe Indian leg of the MUPC Cup atMargao on Wednesday and willnow be representing the country atthe MUPC International Cup atManchester or South Africa next

August. Top under-15 sides of the world, including youth academiesof AC Milan, Barcelona, Boca Ju-niors and Manchester United, takepart in this annual football fiesta.

International players like RyanGiggs, Paul Scholes and a host ofother stars have taken part in thistournament during their formative

    years.Salgaocar youth development

manager Francisco Bruto da Costais elated with his teams triumph

and attributes their success to theirstringent youth development pro-gramme over the years. We havean intense training programme forour youth team and this team hasbeen playing together for the lastthree years. The club patrons have alot to do with our success. We de-served this trophy because we havevarious age-group teams startingfrom under-12 till under-19, so theboys go through a gradual syste-matic process and the results havestarted showing at last, Costa says.

Led from the front by teen sensa-

tion Brandon Fernandes, who im-pressed football scouts with hissublime ball skills during the tour-nament, the Goan side downedRaghav FC (Gurgaon) 2-0 in a one-sided final. After a barren first ses-sion, Quelan Fernandes opened thescoring in the 81st minute before

Nixon Castana added one more twominutes later.

Coach Vaz, happy with his teamsperformance, says: The boys de-serve all the praise. You could al-

ways see the hunger to win in themand they fought hard for it. When

you have such an attitude you arebound to win. We have tougherroads to travel but are ready to takeon the challenge.

Speaking about the challengeshis boys may have abroad, Vaz says:A lot of international games areplayed on artificial surfaces. We

have the facilities in Goa and I hopethe officials can ensure that theboys can train on it. But more im-portantly, we have to keep trainingand playing against senior sides. That would improve our quality ofplay.

The team would now take part in

the under-16 Goan League startinglater this month. I think the GoanLeague will help us stay match-fitand our training sessions will alsogo on. The main tournament is in

August and if we start putting un-due pressure on the boys from nowit may have a detrimental effect. Letthem enjoy their football and alsoconcentrate on academics. That isalso important, Costa says. Wecan go for more specialised and in-tense training a few months beforethe international meet. But nothinghas been planned yet.

Goan kids will get a chance to take on the rest of the world at the MUPC International Cup

Theyve often been the object of ridicule andderision, the kind of stuff that makes badly-dressed superheroes and men in spoof mo-vies (read Superman and Robinhood: Men in

Tights).Leggings are out. Enter tights. Not the demure

variety that makes one wonder if its a well-waxed

leg or a layer of clothing but the look-at-me kindthat comes in shades like electric blue and pink, purple, neon green and rhubarb.

What originated in mens wardrobes in the 16thcentury and then introduced in nude or skinshades in womens wear in the 20th century withthe advent of miniskirts is a hit now. For bring-ing colour to sober outfits or giving the weareran impression of warmth, tights are in.

Coming to tights, online store mytights.comis perhaps unrivalled in popularity, being a one-stop destination for tights specialists like Emilio

Cavallini, Aristoc and Aston. Coloured tights andthe new wet-look variety top the bestselling list.

Neon tights figured high on the ramps, too.At the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai,Shane and Falguni Peacock paired minidresses with green tights and red heels.Vikram Phadnis went in for yellow pairs.

fter doing Cheeni Kum, acontemporary take on rela-tionships, Amitabh Bach-chan and Tabu are teaming

up again for period film The Leg-end of Kunal.

The film, to be directed byChandraprakash Dwivedi andproduced by Amitabhs companyAB Corp Ltd, has the Big B play-ing emperor Ashoka and Tabu hiswife Tishyarakshitra.

This would be the first film Ta-bu is signing after R. Balkis Chee-ni Kum last year.

Tabu had not a moments hes-itation in saying yes to the role ofemperor Ashokas powerful wifeTishyarakshitra, so powerful sheswayed the entire Mauryan Em-pire with her politics and aura.We needed an actress with the

    strength of conviction, Dwivedi,

who has earlier made period filmPinjar, told IANS.

History and its cinematictreatment demand the charactersto be true to their antecedents.

And emperor Ashoka, who iscaught in his twilight years in myfilm, had to be played by Bach-chan saab. Only he possesses thegravity, sobriety and perso-nality along with beingthe age required.

    I wouldntmakeAshokawith-out

him. As for Tabu, she plays hisyoung, fiery, assertive wife. Shesan actress Ive wanted to work

with for a very long time. Again,

only she could play Tishyarakshi-tra, Diwedi said.

In addition, the film will star Arjun Rampal as emperor Asho-kas son Kunal. Amrita Rao willplay his wife Kanchanmala.

Again, I cast them because oftheir suitability rather than sale-ability, Dwivedi said.

In fact, Amrita was recom-mended by Jaya Bachchan. Tabuand Amrita have many dramaticconfrontation scenes together. Ineeded an actress who couldhold her own against someone aspowerful as Tabu. Amrita is del-icate but strong, he added.

The director, who became aname to reckon with after direct-

ing the television epic Chankaya,is determined not to make com-promises with history or with hiscreativity in making The Legendof Kunal.

Its a big responsibility, notonly to history but also to Bach-chan saab, who

has never in his long and dis-tinguished career played a his-torical character. Isnt thatironical? Its also a responsibility

because after Cheeni Kum, au-diences would want to see whathas been done with the very un-usual and striking pair of Bach-chan saab and Tabu. I cantafford to slip up. Dwivedi has

just wrapped up the very compli-cated process of writing theUpanishad for the small screen,

which his wife, the very talentedMandira will direct.

Im now devoting all mytime to The Legend of Kunal.Ill be accompanying Bach-chan saab to Bodh Gaya inBihar, the birthplace ofthe Buddha, for a visit. My film deals withthose years when the

warrior Ashoka re-forms into a saint. Ineed to get bothBachchan saaband myself intothe mood.
