Erfaringsbasert mastergrad i Logistikk

Velkommen til masterstudiet i logistikk i Molde. Dere er alle i jobb og dette innebærer at dere

stort sett vil sitte hjemme og følge kursene via web. For at dere skal få gjort dette må dere

betale semesteravgiften og melde dere opp i faget. Da får dere tilgang til videoene for hvert

kurs i Canvas.

For hvert kurs dere skal ta må dere lese i studiehåndboken. Der vil dere finne om det er

obligatoriske innleveringer (dvs. innleveringer som må leveres for at du skal få ta eksamen),

hjemmeeksamen eller skoleeksamen. Det er ditt ansvar å følge med slik at du gjør det som

1.semsester (høst)

Det anbefales i tillegg å følge kurset «LOG718 Preparatory Course in Basic Statistics»

(https://studiehandbok.himolde.no/en/course/LOG718/2019-autumn). Dette kurset kan dere

følge på nettet. Kurset gis i august og det vil bli gitt beskjed i på våre hjemmesider for

oppstart (https://www.himolde.no/english/studies/programmes/master-programmes-in-

logistics/.) Kurset krever ingen påmelding. Kurset er en oppfriskning av statistikk-kunnskaper

som er nødvendig for å kunne følge kurset «LOG708 Applied Statistics».

De to obligatoriske kursene som gis denne høsten går begge på nett. «LOG711 Supply

Chain Management» og «LOG708 Applied Statistics».

2.Semester (vår)

I dette semesteret skal dere ha «SCM703 Applied Supply Chain Management». Erfaring

tilsier at det er nødvendig å være tilstede hvis ikke du har lang erfaring i matematisk

programmering. I dette kurset brukes LINGO som programmeringsverktøy (du kan laste ned

studentversjonen gratis). Kurset er samlingsbasert 7 dager, som er delt opp i 2+2+2+1 dag.

3.Semester (høst)

I dette semesteret er det ifølge studieplanen satt opp «LOG904-101 Research design» (2,5

ECT), «LOG904-100» (5 ECT) og tre valgfrie seminarer. Alle seminarene (bortsett fra

LOG904-100) medfører obligatorisk oppmøte. Seminarene starter på mandag og er ferdig på

fredag samme uke.

«LOG904-101 Research design» er et seminar som er obligatorisk for alle masterstudenter. I

dette seminarer går dere gjennom hvordan en skal skrive masteroppgave samt hva som

forventes av innholdet i «LOG904-100 Proposal».

«Log 904-100 Proposal» (5 ECT): Dette er kun et skriftlig arbeide som skal levers i Canvas

og godkjennes. I vedlegg 2 Finner dere nærmere beskrivelse av hva som skal være

innholdet i en proposal. Mal (templet) som skal brukes ved innlevering finner dere på våre

Deretter så har dere tre valgfrie seminarer. Dere finner en oversikt over seminariene i

studiehåndboken. Seminarrekken for påfølgende høst publiseres i Mai hvert år og varierer

noe fra år til år. Det er ikke mulig å melde seg opp til et seminar før på høsten. Får dere

problemer med å melde dere opp kan dere ta kontakt med Bente Lindset

(bente.lindset@himolde.no).

I utgangspunktet er dette semesteret satt opp med 4 uker med obligatorisk fremmøte. Dette

kan bli vel mye når en er i jobb. Vi overlater derfor til dere å planlegge disse ukene ved for

eksempel ta to uker i 3.semester og to uker i 5.semster (5 mester er satt av til å skrive

oppgave). Det forventes at dere tar styring på dette selv.

4.semsester (vår)

Begge fagene går på nett: «IDA720 Applied Data Analytics» og «IDA730 Visual Analytics in

Operations Management».

5.Semester (høst)

Masteroppgave: Her starter dere opp å skrive masteroppgaven. Det kan være lurt å tenke på

om du skal forskyve noen av seminarrekkene hit. Det kan være lurt å ta for eksempel

«LOG904-100 Proposal», fordi dette er forarbeid til masteroppgaven og også «LOG904-101

Research design».

6.Semester (vår)

Masteroppgave; Fortsette å skrive masteroppgave. Karakteren gis på grunnlag av det

skriftlige innleveringen (det er ingen muntlig forvaring av oppgaven). Retningslinjer er vedlagt

i vedlegg 3. Mal som skal brukes ved innlevering finner dere på våre hjemmesider

Dersom bedriften du skriver for ønsker at oppgaven skal være konfidensiell så finner dere

skjema på våre hjemmesider.

Dere kan levere inn masteroppgaven to ganger i året: 31. oktober eller 31.mars (hvert år).

MOLDE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE GUIDELINES – PROPOSAL FOR

MASTER’S THESIS

1. INTRODUCTION The proposal for the master dissertation gives the students a credit of 5 ECTS when

approved/passed.

The proposal is a research paper which should give a short description of the research problem in

your thesis, the theoretical framework of your research and the research design of your work. The

structure indicated below is a suggestion. It does not need to be followed strictly. Material from the

Research Design seminar may provide additional suggestions. The main purpose of the proposal is for

students to clarify the project and to come up with a workable plan for the continued work on the

master's thesis.

2. GENERAL STRUCTURE OF THE PROPOSAL 2.1 Title

2.2 Introduction and research problem What logistic issue(s) and problems does your research seek to explore and why is it of practical and

scientific interest?

Specification of your research problem

How is the research topics framed to the logistic literature/theory?

3. SOME MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE

EXAMINATION The length of your research paper should be minimum 10 pages and maximum 20 pages inclusive all

literature references.

• Language: English (except the Applied Master Thesis, where Norwegian or English can be

used).

• Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt. In main headings, a larger font is used.

• Spacing: Text 1.5, Tables, indents (names) and figure captions 1

• Marginal: Top margins 2.5 cm-4.0 cm, bottom 2.5 cm, left 3.0 cm, right 2.5 cm

• Page number: Bottom right corner or centered

• Reference style: Author-date style (Chicago, Harvard or APA)

Precise instructions for submission of the written proposal will be sent by e-mail to all students.

The examination implies the written paper and an oral presentation (15 minutes) with a subsequent

section with questions from your adviser and a grader.

Submission date and dates for oral examination, (not experience based students) will be announced

on both Canvas and our home pages.

The presentations are open to staff and other students, unless a confidentiality agreement is made

with the company providing the thesis topic.

Your adviser and one grader will decide whether your paper will be accepted in its present form or

need to be revised before final acceptance.

Guidelines for Master’s Thesis in Logistics

1 General format requirements There are two different formats for the written thesis. First, the traditional monography and second, a paper based format. This document will introduce some general guidelines for both. General requirements for both types:

• Language: English (except the Applied Master Thesis, where Norwegian or English

can be used).

• Font: Usually Times New Roman, 12 pt. In main headings, a larger font is used.

• Spacing: Text 1.5, Tables, indents (names) and figure captions 1

• Marginal: Top margins 2.5 cm-4.0 cm, bottom 2.5 cm, left 3.0 cm, right 2.5 cm

• Page number: Bottom right corner or centered

• Reference style: Author-date style (Chicago, Harvard or APA)

Body of the text

When writing the body of the text, pay special attention to the following four issues:

headings, tables, figures, and references in the text.

• Headings

Your headings should make stand-alone sense and be to the point. All the subheadings

should be logically related to their main heading, i.e. they should be conceptually in

parallel. A subheading should not follow the main heading without any intervening text;

it is good for the reader to always know what will be happening next. Under one section

heading, please avoid more than two lower-level headings. Examples:

Chapter 2

Sections 2.1, 2.2

Subsections 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.2.1

Avoid four-numbered subsections, such as 2.1.1.1. Instead you can mark the subheadings

in italics.

• Tables, Figures and Appendices

Tables and Figures are numbered independently and consequently (e.g. Table 1 and Figure

1). The Tables and Figures should make sense on their own and they should be

commented in the text. The captions must be placed consistently. Place the Table captions

above the table and Figure captions below the Figure.

Tables and figures that are not essential for the text can be included as appendices at the

end of the thesis, e.g., questionnaire forms and interviews. The title of the appendix

(which appears in the List of appendices) should be written on top of the page. Appendices

are also numbered. Whenever an appendix is attached, it must be referred to in the text.

• References in the text and Reference list

In general in academic writing, the conventional method to cite an author is to give

his/her name as early as possible so that the reader always knows “who is speaking”,

i.e. whose ideas are being discussed. If you copy an author’s text word by word it is

called quoting. In this case place the words or sentences in quotation marks. Direct

quoting should be avoided in scientific writing and it is preferred to paraphrase (unless you

quote frequently from the literature that is being analyzed which is quite common in arts

and humanities subjects):

It has been stated that “Molde University College have one of the best Logistics master programs in Europe” (Olsen, 2017, p. 15).

2 Monography There are no strict rules on how many pages the thesis on this form should be, but

typically, the length spans from 60-100 pages. If two students write together, the typical

length are 80-120 pages. However, the number of pages depend on the subjects. E.g.

within the discipline of mathematics or quantitative topics will tend to have a less number

of pages than theses within SCM.

The outline of the thesis report will vary. Your headings and order of the chapters and

sections and the number of pages are not restricted to the suggestions below. Make

your own structure and good names for the headings in a logical sequence!

3 Paper Based Thesis This type of thesis consist of two main parts: an introduction and the Research paper. This

type of thesis tend to have fewer pages than the monography, e.g., 50-70 pages, but it is

not necessarily easier to write for that matter. In a research paper, the theoretical

framework is not always included or it is very short. The same is for the literature review,

description of the industry etc. The outline for both the introduction and the research

paper is more or less similar. In the introduction, you should elaborate the subjects, which

are just a short paragraph in the paper.

Introduction part:

Your headings and order of the chapters and sections and the number of pages are not

restricted the below suggestions. Find your own structure and good names for the

headings in a logical sequence!
