Integrated Schools

“Education together in school of children and young people drawn from the Protestant and Catholic traditions, with the aim of providing them an excellent education that gives recognition to and promotes the expression of these two traditions”

• 1981 eerste integrated school

• 1987: NICIE: Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education

• 1989: NICIE erkend door overheid

• Nu: 65 scholen in totaal = 7% van de schoolgaandekinderen

• Initiatief kwam van ouders!

Integrated Schools - Aanpak

• Kinderen van verschillende culturenen godsdiensten, Katholiek en Protestant, leren en leven dagelijkssamen op één school.

• Samen feesten vierenAlle leerlingen vieren alle feestenmee: Ramadan, St Patrick, Kerstmis…De kinderen maakten een gebed datvoor iedereen goed voelt

• Praten! Oplossing: praten over emoties, eerst is men kwaad op elkaar. Na lang praten is men nogkwaad maar niet meer op elkaar.

Now i don’t think about it at all.

At an integrated school, you discover thateven though we have different faiths, opinions and backgrounds, we can live in peace.

We don’t have to change what we are, but we need to understand and respect theculture of others.”
