The Faculty undertakes research in a vast range of Business related areas. However in focusing the research efforts and expertise of staff, designated areas of research expertise have been developed within the faculty that include:

Electronic Commerce and Knowledge Management; Transport Planning; Organisational Accountability; Health Services Management; Financial Markets; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; and Practice-led Research.

RMIT Business has been pro-active in establishing close links with industry and addressing research issues that are relevant to business and which provide far-reaching benefit. The Faculty has a long established reputation for expertise in innovative design and delivery of educational training. It is now also becoming increasingly active and recognised for research, which is practically focused and engages with industry and the community. Some of the industry partners that RMIT Business is working with in collaborative research initiatives include the Financial Planning Association, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Universal Postal Union, KPMG Consulting, Siemens Limited, the Southern Grampians Shire Council and Austroads.

Within each of the five Schools in the Faculty there is a Research Director who oversees and co-ordinates their School’s research efforts. The Faculty also has two research centres – the Centre for Management Quality Research and the Transport Research Centre. In addition the Faculty is involved in 3 Co-operative Research Centres (CRC’s) – the CRC for Construction Innovation, the CRC for Smart Internet Technology and most recently the CRC for Interactive Design.

The Faculty’s Research Development Unit (RDU) is managed by the Assoc. Dean (Research) and oversees, manages, monitors and reports on the research activities and performance of the Faculty as well as promoting research opportunities and achievements that assists in building a research culture within the Faculty. The RDU team assists staff to develop their research skills and to maintain their supervisory standards through the delivery of workshops and seminars.

Summary of Recent Research Performance at RMIT Business

In 2002 the Faculty has improved its research performance across a number of key measures including the Department of Education Science and Training (DEST) measures of Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) student completions and research income. Currently the Faculty is in the process of collecting all evidence and finalising details of all the eligible DEST research publications but preliminary evidence of publications suggests that we are likely to have a similar number of DEST research publications to the number achieved in 2001.

Through initiatives such as the Business Research Interns Group and various research forums involving staff and research students at both the Faculty and School level there is evidence to support that the research consciousness and focus of the Faculty is becoming increasing important and recognised by staff and students. Our emphasis on research is apparent not only within the faculty but RMIT Business has also become recognised for conducting research that is practical in focus and engages with industry and the community. In 2002 the Faculty was successful in obtaining 3 Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage grants with industry partners as well as being involved with another Linkage grant via the University of Ballarat.
