Equality Act 2010
Brings together • The Equal Pay Act 1970• The Sex Discrimination Act 1975• The Race Relations Act 1976• The Disability Discrimination Act 1995• The Employment Equality (Religion and Belief) Regulations 2003• The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003• The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006• The Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007
Equality Act 2010
Defines the characteristics of nine protected groups:• Age• Disability• Race• Religion and belief• Gender• Sexual orientation • Gender reassignment• Marriage and civil partnership• Pregnancy and maternity
Equality Act 2010Now includes protection for Direct, Indirect, Associated
and Third person discrimination
• Direct - eg less favourable treatment, harassment, bullying
• Indirect - eg requiring employee to be 6ft tall (women), cannot wear headwear (Sikh)
• Associated or ‘transferred discrimination’ - eg being a carer or in a mixed race/multi-cultural marriage/partnership
• Third person – eg cannot work in an environment where direct discrimination is occurring
