BLACK, ASIAN AND ETHNIC
MINORITY PEOPLE HAVE
CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO OUR
SOCIETY THROUGHOUT HISTORY
AND THEIR INPUT IS OFTEN
UNKNOWN OR NOT FOUND IN OUR
EDUCATION AND HISTORY BOOKS.
THIS YEAR, UNITE IS HIGHLIGHTING
KEY BAEM INVENTORS AND
INNOVATORS WHO YOU MAY NOT
HAVE HEARD OF AND THERE ARE
MANY MORE NOT LISTED.
John Edmonstone Taught taxidermy to Charles Darwin
Originally a black slave from Guyana, practiced taxidermy in Glasgow and Edinburgh in the 1800’s. He taught taxidermy to University students and was hired by Darwin to teach him as well. Certainly the knowledge Darwin learnt from Edmonstone helped him greatly in his work.
John AlcindorGP & Medical Researcher, specialising in Health & Poverty Born in 1873 in Trinidad and in 1907 established his own medical practice in Paddington, London. He was a Medical Officer of Health for the Paddington Poor Law Guardians. His innovative research showed that poverty, low quality food and unbalanced diets played an important role in poor health. He was also an equal rights activist.
Kuldeep Kaur Bhangal Anti-MRSA Invention
A specialist registrar in orthopaedics, she invented the Multi-layered Disposable Apron in 2005 for which she won an award. She was inspired by watching Formula 1 drivers tear off their disposable, see-through visors during a race so she developed this apron specifically for the medical field to combat MRSA and other hospital-acquired infections.
Neomi Bennettlife-saving mobility aid
In 2010 she developed a device for helping people at risk of deep vein thrombosis. This is an inner sock that makes it easier to put on anti-embolism stockings that help prevent blood clots. She has won many awards and came up with the idea while on a placement in the community where she saw patients struggling.
Ronjon ChakravertyA ‘boost’ for blood cancer treatment
A bone marrow transplant physician, he led the research team at University College London and discovered a way of improving the effectiveness of bone marrow transplantation in 2010. This research offers the potential to treat or prevent the relapse of blood cancer in patients following bone marrow transplantation.
Maggie Aderin-PocockSpace Scientist
Born in London in 1968 to Nigerian parents, she has made many industrial and academic inventions. These range from hand held land mine detectors to systems designed to monitor wind speeds. She is well known as a Space scientist and has given talks to thousands of adults and school children. She has produced a free DVD, “Space in the UK”, which is distributed through schools and elsewhere. She has received many awards including an MBE for her services to science and education.
Ron HeadleyEco-friendly cars
Born in 1939 in Jamaica and moved to England at 15. Following a prolific cricket career, he moved into the motor industry where he invented the Ecocharger. This eco-friendly device tackles the problem of exhaust fumes by making more use of the fuel, allowing us all to breathe cleaner air. He calls his invention a "mini refinery under the bonnet".
Geoff Palmer Professor who found new ways of brewing
Born in 1940 in Jamaica, he came to England aged 14. He is a grain scientist as well as a human rights activist. He received two malting process patents in 1973-1975. He was the first black professor in Scotland and contributed greatly to race relations and community work. In 2003 he received an OBE for his contribution to grain science.
