One of my good friends in the pastoral ministry is a pastor in a largely Wesleyan denomination whose theology and structure are very similar to our own. I have attended worship at his church a couple of times and I didn’t even have to take a week of vacation. Why? Because he is a pastor in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. They have worship on Saturday, the original Sabbath day. Although we don’t worship on Saturday, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church’s advocacy for Sabbath observance is admirable and it would serve us well to take notice. Although many Christians try to stay away from a legalistic observance of commandments, our culture’s inability to rest is causing us much harm. We work at work and work at home. Our 24-hour connectivity is keeping us from truly being able to take a break when our bodies are not designed to work seven days a week. We burn the midnight oil until there is little left to give. Unfortunately, our families often suffer the brunt of our workaholic tendencies. To make matters worse, we often go on exhausting vacations to solve our rest issues and we sometimes come home from over-scheduled holiday itineraries more weary than we were when we left. We are in the midst of a culture that is slowly killing us. We have bought the lie that taking rest is laziness. Because we are slaves to our calendar, we feel out of control and we often don’t know what to do to change it. We aren’t only burning the proverbial candle at both ends, we are overheating and melting it from the middle as well! In the gospel of Mark, Jesus reminds us of something we often miss in the Sabbath. It was made for us. In fact, the more we learn about Sabbath, the more we realize how the whole of creation is in need of periodic rest. So, the next time you are short-tempered, tempted to your bad habits, or otherwise feel the world is crushing in on you and you have nothing left to give, it might be that you have gone too long without a substantial and serious break. You need to give it a rest! In Christ, Tony July 12, 2015
