Loading Roll Paper

1 Opentherollpapercover.

2 Pushdownthelocklever,thenmovetherollpaperholdertotheleft.

3 Placetherollpaperontopoftheprinter.

4 Ifnecessary,adjusttherollmediaadapterstofitthecoresizeoftherollpaper.Thenreleasethetensionleveronbothadapters.

5 Pushtheadaptersintothepapercoreatbothendsoftheroll.Thenpushdownthetensionleverstosecurethem.

6 Movetherollpaperallthewaytotheright.

7 Slidetherollpaperholdertoaligntheleftadapterwiththe ontheholder.

1 Removeanyrollpaperfromthepaperpath.Makesuretheprinteristurnedonandtherollpapercoverisclosed.

2 Pressthe Papersourcebuttonuntilthe SheeticonappearsontheLCDscreen.

3 Feedthesheetdownintothepaperslotuntilitmeetsresistance.Makesuretherightedgeofthepaperisstraightandalignedwiththeverticallineontherollpapercover.

Note: If the sheet is more than 19 mil thick, you need to use the Paper release (ePlaten) button.

4 Press .Thesheetfeedsintoprintingpositionautomatically.

5 Checktheprinter’scontrolpanelandselectthecorrectmediatype,ifnecessary.

6 Printyourpage.Afterithasbeenprinted,thesheetstaysintheprinter.

7 Toremoveyourprint,pressthe buttonwhileholdingthesheet.

Loading and Using Cut Sheet Paper

Checking and Cleaning the Print Head

Automatically Checking and Cleaning the Print HeadTheprinterautomaticallychecksthenozzlesandcleansthemifnecessary.Youcanspecifyhowoftenyouwantthistohappen.

1 Pressthe Menubutton.PRINTER SETUPishighlighted.Press again.

2 Press untilAUTO NOZZLE CHECKishighlighted,thenpress .

3 Selectoneofthefollowing,thenpressOK:

• ON: PERIODICALLY—Theprinterperiodicallychecksitsnozzlesandrunsacleaningcycleifnecessary(defaultsetting).

• ON: EVERY JOB—Theprinterautomaticallychecksitsnozzlesandrunsacleaningcycleifnecessarybeforeeachprintjob.Thisprocessusesaverysmallamountofink(andnopaper)andisusefulifyouarerunninglargeprintjobsunattended.

• OFF—Theprinterwillnotperformautomaticnozzlechecksandcleaningcycles.

Note: You can also run nozzle checks and head cleaning cycles from your computer using the Epson Printer Utility4 (Macintosh®) or the Utility tab in your printer driver (Windows®). See your User’s Guide for more information.

Manually Checking and Cleaning the Print Head

1 Makesurepaperisloaded.

2 Pressthe Menubutton.

3 Press untilTEST PRINTisselected,thenpress .NOZZLE CHECKisselected.

4 Press ,thenpressOKtostartprintingthenozzlecheckpattern.

Ifanydotsorsegmentsaremissingordeflected,runacleaningcycleasdescribedbelow.

1 Pressthe Menubutton.

2 Press untilMAINTENANCEisselected,thenpress .

3 Press untilCLEANINGisselected,thenpress .

4 Selectoneofthefollowing,thenpress :

NORMAL CLEANING—PressOKtostartthecleaningcycle.

CLEAN EACH COLOR—Press ,selectthecolorpairyouwanttoclean,thenpressOKtostartthecleaningcycle.

POWER CLEANING—PressOKtostartthecleaningcycle.Useonlyifthenormalcleaningprocessisnotsufficienttoclearthenozzles.

5 Whencleaningisfinished,printthenozzlecheckagaintoconfirmthattheheadisclean.

Ifyourprintslookgrainyorblurry,oryouseemisregistrationor“ghosting,”youneedtoaligntheprinthead.

1 Makesuretheprinteristurnedon.LoadEpsonEnhancedMattepaper.(YoucanalsouseEpsonDoubleweightMatteorUltraPremiumPhotoPaperLuster.)

2 Pressthe Menu button.

3 Pressthe or buttonuntilHEAD ALIGNMENT ishighlighted.Thenpress .

4 Press andchoosethetypeofpaperyouloaded.ThenpressOK.

5 Press 3times.

6 Press tohighlightALIGNMENT.

7 Press tohighlightAUTO,thenpress again.UNI-D(uni-directional)ishighlighted.Thisisthetypeofalignmenttostartwith.

8 Press ,thenpressOKtostartthealignmentprocess.Eachheadalignmenttakesabout7minutes.

Caution: Make sure you don’t open the front cover or turn off the printer during the alignment process.

9 Whentheuni-directionalalignmentisfinished,pressthe Menubutton,selectHEAD ALIGNMENT,thenselectALIGNMENT.

10SelectBI-D ALL,thenpressOKagaintostartthebi-directionalalignment.

11Whendone,pressthe Pause/resetbutton.

Beforeyoubeginalargeprintjob,youshouldcheckyourinklevels.Ifoneofyourcartridgesislow,youcanreplaceitbeforeyoustart.Oryoucanwaituntiltheinkrunsout,replacethecartridge,andthencontinuethejob.

Checking Ink and Maintenance Tank LevelsTheeasiestwaytocheckinklevelsisfromthecontrolpanel.Thenumbersabovetheinkcartridgeiconscorrespondtothe9cartridgeslotsintheprinter.

Ink gauges for 9 cartridges listed below

Maintenance tank gauges(one tank for Pro 7890)

Replacing Ink CartridgesWhenoneoftheinkiconsflashes,andINK LOWisdisplayedontheLCDscreen,thecartridgeisnearlyexpended.ChecktheLCDscreentoseewhichcartridgeislow,andmakesureyouhavethecorrectreplacementcartridge.

WhenoneoftheiconshasanXandREPLACE INK CARTRIDGEisdisplayed,thecartridgeisexpended.Toreplacethecartridge,firstmakesuretheprinterison.

1 Pressthe buttontoreleasetheinkcover.Ifnecessary,selecttheinkbayforthecartridgeyouwanttoreplace,thenpressOK.

2 Opentheinkcoveralltheway.

3 Pushintheloworexpendedcartridgetoreleaseit.

4 Removetheexpendedinkcartridgefromtheprinter.

Warning: Do not shake the expended cartridge, or ink may leak. If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets in your eyes, flush them immediately with water.

5 Makesurethereplacementcartridgeisthecorrectcolor,andremoveitfromitspackage.Gentlyshakethecartridgebeforeinstallingit.

6 Holdthecartridgewiththearrowmarkpointingtowardtheprinter.Theninsertthecartridgeintotheslot.Don’tforceit.

Note: If you can’t insert the cartridge smoothly, you may have the wrong cartridge. Check the package and product code. If the Ink light remains on after installing the cartridge, try removing and then reinserting it.

7 Closetheinkcover.

Replacing the Paper CutterIfyounoticethatthepaperisn’tcutcleanly,youmayneedtoreplacethecutter(part#C12C815331).

1 Pressthe Menubuttonontheprinter,thenpress untilMAINTENANCEishighlighted.

2 Press again.Press tohighlightCUTTER REPLACEMENT.

3 Press todisplayEXECUTE,thenpressOK.Thepapercuttermovestothereplacementposition.

4 Toremovethecuttercover,pressinthetabandpulldownthecover.

5 Loosenthescrewusingacross-headscrewdriver.

8 Tightenthescrewusingacross-headscrewdriver.

9 Alignthecuttercover,thenpressitinuntilitsnapsintoplace.

10PressOKtofinishthereplacementprocedure.Thecuttermovesbacktothehomeposition.

11RunthecutteradjustmentfromtheMaintenancemenuusingthecontrolpanel.

Replacing the Maintenance TankThePro7890hasonemaintenancetank(ontherightside)andthePro9890hastwo(oneoneitherside).Youneedtoreplacethemaintenancetank(part#C12C890191)whenyouseeMAINTENANCE TANK FULLontheLCDscreen,theiconhasanX,andtheprinterwon’tprint.

1 IfyouhavethePro9890,checktheLCDscreentodeterminewhichtankneedstobereplaced(leftorright).

Note: The printer will not print if one of the maintenance tanks is full. On the Pro 9890, the right tank is used more than the left. To maximize tank life, you can switch the tanks.

2 Turnofftheprinter.

6 Carefullyremovethecutter.

Warning: The blade is sharp. Be careful when removing it.

7 Insertthenewcutter.Makesurethecutterpingoesintothehole.

3 Pulloutthemaintenancetankasshown.

Caution: Do not tip the tank or ink may spill out.

4 Placetheusedtankintheplasticbagincludedwiththenewtankanddisposeofitcarefully.
