LEISURE SPORTS COMMENTS FROM THE STUDENTS: Isabella 3/2S – ‘I really enjoyed the Leisure Sports Program because we learnt lots of new skills. Thank you to Mr Patterson for organising it.’ Cheng Yue 5/4P – ‘My favourite leisure sports activity so far has been lawn bowls because I finally got the hang of it at the end.’ Loukita 4M – ‘I really enjoyed Lawn Bowls. It was fun to learn how the bowls turn and I got better as I practised. The people from the club who taught us were very kind and helpful.’ Savina 4M - ‘Tennis was really fun. While we were there we learnt how to do the moves, like forehand and backhand and also the best way to hold the racquet.’ Alana 4M - ‘Ten Pin Bowling was lots of fun. I really liked being able to practise my aim and trying to beat my friends. The shoes we had to wear were comfortable but a bit funny looking.’ Chengchao 4M – ‘Orienteering at school with Mr Patterson was very exciting. It was fun to learn to use a compass. We also played table tennis, it was great being able to play against my friends.’ Jacob 5C – ‘For the last 3 weeks Stage 2 and 3 have gone to leisure sports. We were split into 4 groups to do our sports. Thanks to Mr Patterson for organising these fun activities.’ I would like to thank our teachers, the coaches and each of the venues for allowing the children to experience these sports in the correct settings and using the real equipment. Thanks to:

Peter and the team at Pennant Hills

    Bowling Club

Lucas and the coaches at Tennis World,

    North Ryde

The team at Strike Bowling Centre,

    Chatswood

The teachers at Epping Public School

Without the support of these people and organisations we would not have been able to run such an exciting Leisure Sports program.

KINDNESS WEEK Caught you being kind! For the next two weeks our “kindness detectives” will be looking for students who are showing kindness to others. The names of these kind people will be placed into a box. At each assembly one name will be drawn out. This kind student will be presented with an Eppie and a special reward. All other students whose kind acts have led them to having their names in the box will receive an Eppie.

THANK YOU MORNING TEA I do apologise. Last week was a very busy week and collating the invites for the thank you morning tea has taken a little longer than expected. They will go out in the next day or two. As explained it is possible that for whatever reason your invite may not get to you. Please if you have helped in any way there is a generic invite in the newsletter, fill that in and return to the class teacher. We look forward to seeing you there.

FAREWELL MR WALMSLEY Last week Mr Walmsley let me know that this would be his last year conducting the Epping Public School Band. Mr Walmsley has been the band conductor here for 24 years. We were his first ever school. During my time here I have been most impressed by his commitment and dedication to the band students at our school. Those conducted by Mr Walmsley have been very lucky. His increased outside commitments and his growing family have meant Mr Walmsley has had to take this decision. Mr Walmsley leaves our band in great shape. I’m sure I speak for the school community when I

say thank you to Mr Walmsley for all his done for the students at our school and wish him and his family every happiness for the future.

CRICKET SELECTION Well done to Senara in 6/5M who last week was selected in the Secondary Schools Sydney North Regional Cricket Team. This competition will be held in 2014 when Senara will be in Year 7, but trials were held this year. Senara had to trial against high school girls up to the age of 17. She can be very proud of her efforts in gaining selection.

WORLD’S BIGGEST CLASSROOM For those of you who use Epping Train Station you will see on the windows, images of artwork from local schools. We have images by our Stage 2 Art Enrichment Group (Nature Mosaic) and our Stage 3 Art Enrichment Group (A Different Perspective). We also have images displayed at St James Station and the Entertainment Centre including Masks by our Stage 1 Art Enrichment Group. Well done to our boys and girls in the groups and I encourage you to take a look.

LOST ANYTHING AT SCHOOL THIS TERM? If your child has lost anything at school please come and check in Lost Property situated just outside the library. There are jackets, hats, lunch boxes and water bottles even some handballs. Check soon as the boxes will be cleared in the next few weeks.

STUDENT WELLBEING AT EPPING Over the last couple of weeks, a couple of parents have approached the school with questions about the way we support students in their social development. As the year draws to a close, I thought I would outline a couple of initiatives EPS has in place to support the social and emotional wellbeing of students. The school rules and behaviour management policy are centred around the concepts of pride, respect, safety and kindness. Rewards, from Eppies to Class Awards, Principals Afternoon Tea and Harmony Day are

not only given for academic achievement, but to recognize and encourage the personal and interpersonal qualities of all students. Earlier this year, we started a Playground Club, a quiet place to play games, draw, write or just talk to have a chat. Some children have difficulties developing friendships, often those who are new to the school. Others just have a preference for quiet and creative activities. It has been a great success – there are students who have started talking to each other for the first time, drawing and chatting at lunchtime. Older students enjoy teaching the younger ones how to play various games and in this way all children develop a wider range of contacts within the school as a whole. The whole school becomes a warmer, friendlier place and students’ feelings of anxiety in the playground are reduced. We are hoping to expand the range of activities next year and I welcome any suggestions. This week marks the beginning of Kindness Week. All members of staff are on the lookout for students (and each other) being kind. Kind children will be given a card that goes into a draw for a prize. When we model and support particular behaviour as a whole school, we convey a powerful message that relationships between people need to be based on genuine respect and caring. As the Learning and Support Teacher, I am always available to assist with information concerning the student wellbeing issues. Mrs Galilee, Learning and Support Teacher

CHRISTMAS GIFT There is a new flyer about this elsewhere in the newsletter with all the details. Please note that the Christmas Gifts can be left in your child’s classroom and the due date for them to be returned is now Friday 6 December.

    LIBRARY NEWS Library Stocktake 2013

Congratulations to 6/5M who all returned their library books by Thursday, 21st November, as requested. At the weekend I undertook preparations for our Annual Stocktake which begins today. All library books must be accounted for, one way or another. Reminders about overdue books were distributed today. Your prompt attention to these books would be appreciated. Dr Who Festival Last week we had a Dr Who festival each day at lunchtime to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the TV series. It was amusing to see the little children set up the library each day as a movie theatre so they could watch old episodes of the series. You may have seen the Google™ logo and its associated game at the weekend. If this was not enough overkill for you, then you may like to have a look at the accompanying website to learn how to make Tardis and Dalek cupcakes. What a great idea for Sci-Fi birthdays or Dr Who tragics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP1SVBdIsKQ&feature=youtu.be Mrs Lyn Campbell Teacher-Librarian
