FEATURE

Q: What inspired you to carry out this research?

A: We are interested in Chemistry, so we searched for an old project in this field. We found out about the electrochemical method and thought it was very interesting and we wanted to develop it further.

Q: How did you feel when you were selected?

A: We were very excited because we didn’t think that our project would be selected. Other groups presented really well, so we were pleasantly surprised when we got the news. After being selected, we worked hard and tried our best to represent our school.

Q: Do you think this project will be useful for people in the next generation?

A: Yes, I do. But future research will need to improve this project because it isn’t perfect yet. However, we think that, in the future, there will be many ways to upgrade this proj-ect in order to achieve higher performance.

Q: What do you think about science projects? Are they appropriate for students?

A: Yes, we think that science projects are appropriate for students. It will help us to heighten our abilities such as learning and doing more difficult research in university. Furthermore, the innovations developed and the knowledge gained will be useful for people in the future.

Q: What is the purpose of your project and the inspiration?A: Our project is in the field of material science. And we made a new material and tried to enhance the stability of it. The original materials are very important such as using hydrogen as storage because hydrogen fuels are becoming important. So we wanted to improve its property.Q: Why did you decide to come to TISF?A: In KSA, your teacher, Teacher Koong, came to our school and said that MWITS is a very good school and she invited us. We wanted to come.Q: What are some obstacles you faced while doing the project?A: Making new materials was not easy, so we encountered so many problems while doing this project such as synthesizing the material.Q: How do you feel about presenting your project in front of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn ?A: We were very excited and it was an honor to present our project to the princess.

TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

Welcome Ceremony

Kotchakorn TeerasutMahidol Wittayanusorn School, THAILAND(Performer)

The atmosphere was great at the Welcoming Ceremony, with shows from Thailand, Russia, Japan, Singapore and the Philippines. Everyone had a great time exchanging cultures and learning about other countries!

I performed in the Traditional Thai Performance, by singing along with the Thai dancers. I also played the flute in the MWITS Band, performed songs of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej - the songs are Falling Rain (Sai Fon), Love in Spring (Lom Nao), Love at Sundown (Yaam Yen) and New Year Greetings.

Miu Fukatsu, Kyoka Sato & Sho YoshimizuAichi Prefectural Handa Senior High School, JAPAN (Audience)

It is our first time in Thailand, and one of our first impressions here was that it is so hot in winter.

Maayan Sherman, Lavi Koren & Inbar KatanThe Leo Baeck Education Center, ISRAEL(Audience)

The shows were wonderful, and inspiring, even; it’s our first time in Thailand so we enjoyed watching the Thai cultural dances. We are impressed by the beautiful culture and very nice people.

Q: How do you find this science fair beneficial?

Mr. Peter Corkill: The biggest benefits of the fair are the oppor-tunities for young people to share their ideas and for teachers to see how good and effective students’ works can be. Also, students from all around the world can establish good relationships through this science fair.

Q: What field of research are you interested in and how will it benefit humanity?

Mr. Peter Corkill: I am interested in how young people solve climate and sustainability problems, as they will carry our future; if they are thinking in the right way, it will definitely be beneficial to mankind. I’m also interested in Mathematics and Engineering projects.

Ms. Louise Bourke: I’m interested in how technology provides help to the elderly and how it is being de-veloped for children in the future.

Q: What are your impressions of the poster presentation?

Mr. Peter Corkill: The levels of engagement and excellence are very high, and the enthusiasm of stu-dents presenting their projects.

Ms. Louise Bourke: It’s a wonderful diverse range of posters and I like how the students do research which will benefit their communities. For example, the MWITS science project speakers have presented a project which focuses on testing the level of spiciness.

Q : What do you expect to see at the Thailand International Science Fair?

A : I expect to see science projects that the students are working on.

Q : What were your first im-pressions when you arrived at MWITS?

A : My first impressions were about the buildings of MWITS: the school is large and great too.

Q : Are you interested in the Thailand International Sci-ence Fair, why?

A : Yes, I am very interested be-cause there are many activities going on here like the procession, the poster presentations, and the culture performances.

Q: What are the trends in the fields of science study in Laos?

A: Most of the fields are the ap-plications of biology, physics and chemistry. For project presenting, there are studies in biology, bio-chemistry and the environment. Students can do a self-study such as tissue culturing or a study of elements in the soil of the Mekong river.

Q: How do you feel about the poster presentations?

A: It is really meaningful and is important for the students who are keen on science. We also have to learn from other countries.

Q: How did you feel when Her Royal Highness Princess Sir-indhron was in front of your poster presentation?

A: I was very nervous, but it was such an honor. I first thought of her coming as annually, but then I dis-covered that it has been a long time since she last visited this school. Her Royal Highness was very nice, and was very fond of writing notes. The fact that she paid full attention to every project calmed me down.

Q: What inspired you to do this project?

A: When I was in Year 10, I learnt about tea in school. I found it really interesting and fascinating, so I decided to do this project. Also, it is a good link between biology and chemistry, which are the subjects that I like.

Interviewee: Bronte Alston (John Monash Science School, Melbourne, Australia)Interviewer: Cholapat VarongchayakulEditor: Arun Wongprommoon

Q: What do you expect to see in TISF 2017?

A: I expect to see creativity and usage of the scientific method from high school students, which would inspire me to search for knowledge and make inventions.

Q: Which subject do you teach?

A: I teach chemistry. My students have done a biochemistry project, which integrates some knowledge in chemistry.

Q: Is this your first time visit-ing MWITS?

A: No, it isn’t. I actually graduated from MWITS.

Interviewee: Mr. Sakol Warintaraporn, Project Advisor of Napatsorn Kraivisitkul (Kamnoetvidya Science Academy)Interviewer: Marut PhatarasomjedEditor: Arun Wongprommoon

Q: What field is your project in? What are you interested in?

A: My project is in the field of Bio-chemistry. I’m also interested in this field

Q: Can you give us some de-tails of your project?

A: Of course. We used banana peels, which is a waste product, to produce bioethanol. The method was focused on pretreatment and fermentation in various temperatures and pH in order to find the optimal condition.

Q: What are you expecting to see at the Thailand Interna-tional Science Fair?

A: I would like to exchange ideas and research with foreign students and make connections with them. I expect that I will receive good correspon-dence, experience and knowledge from here.
