Katie:IknowI'veheardalittlebitofitinpersonfromyou,butIwouldloveifyoucouldstartbytellingusyourownstoryandhowyoucameintothisworldoftapping.

Brittany:Sure.Well,let'ssee.Itstartedwithmebeingalittlebitofatroubledteen.ImovedoutofmyhousewhenIwas15.Andoneofthethingsthatmyparentssortofbribedmeintodoingwasgototherapy,andI'msogladtheydidbecauseImetthisangeltherapistandweworkedtogetherforaboutayear.AndI'llneverforget,oneday,hecameinandhesaid,"Youknow,Ilearnedthistechniqueovertheweekend,anditlookscompletelyridiculousbutIthinkitmightreallyhelpyou."AndIwasinsomuchpain,atthetime.Iwasjustlike,"Oh,anythingtogetmeoutofmypain."Andso,hewalkedmethroughthistechniquewhereIwas,like,tappingonmybodyandsayingIlovedmyself.AndI'llneverforgethowridiculousIfelt.Ithinkmyfaceliterally,like,turnedpink,Iwassoembarrassed.ButImean,30minuteslateror15minuteslater,wheneverweweredone,like,alloftheyuckystuffandallofthehurt,andthepain,andtheanger,andallthethingsthatIwasholdingontoinside,like,leftmybody.AndIrememberIskippedoutofhisofficethatday,andIjustfeltthebestI'deverfeltinmywholelife.Andso,everyweekthatIwouldcomeback,Iwouldsay,"Steve,let'sdothattappingthing."

Anditwasthethingthathelpedmesomuchandhelpedmemakesuchrapidchanges.Youknow,Iwentfrom,like,basicallyahomelesskidlivingonthestreetsat15,to19yearsoldIwasrunningmyowncompany.Andthreeyearslaterfromthat,Iownedthreehousesofmyown,andIknowalotofthatisbecauseoftherapidchangesthatIwasabletomakethroughthistechnique.Andso,youknow,onceIdecidedthatIdidn'treallywannajustmakemoneyforthesakeofmakingmoneyanymore,IrealizedthatmypassionandmyloveandtheonlythingthatIwoulddowithmyfreetime,isIwouldstudytappingandIwouldexperimentwithtapping.AndIlearnedhowtodoitonmyself,andthen,Ilearnedhowtodoitwithmyfriends.

Andso,aboutsevenyearsago,ImadethetransitionandIstartedteachingit,youknow,specificforemotionaleatingbecause,whileIwasgoingthroughthetroubledteenageyears,Iwasalsoreallystrugglingwithbingeeating.SothatwaskindofwhenIstartedbinginganddietingand,youknow,gainingweightandlosingweight.Andtappinghelpedmesome.Itdefinitelyhelpedmewiththeemotionsaroundit,butwhatIrealizedwas,theregularwaythatIlearnedtappingfromalltheexpertsdidn'tworkformyproblems.Andso,sevenyearsagowhenIstartedmycompany,IjuststartedexperimentingwithdifferenttechniquesandIstartedpairing,youknow,otherthingsthatIhadlearned,likeNLPand,youknow,shamanism,andyouknow,allthesesortoflikewoowoothings,withtapping.And,overaperiodofacoupleofyears,Idevelopedasystemthatdefinitelyusestappingbutothermodalities,specificallyformyproblems,whichwereemotionaleating,foodcravings,self-sabotage.Andso,that'sthethingthatIreallyfocusonandthat'swhatIreallyhelpwomenwith,andIloveit.Soit'sbeenalongjourneybutit'sbeenareallycoolandrewardingone.

Katie:Ilovedthat.AndIwannagoalittledeeperintothescienceoftappingandhaveyouexplainwhatitis.Butbeforethat,I'dlovetotalkalittlebitmoreaboutjusttheemotionalside.Itseemslikeemotionaleatingisdefinitelyanissuethataffectswomenmoreoftenthanmen,andIfeellikethere'san...evenwhenyousaid,like,thatyouweretappingandsayingthingslikethatyouloveyourself,Iknowthatthatalonecanbesohardforwomentosay.Infact,intherapywhenI'vehadtosaythat,attimes,Ifoundmyselfcrying.AndIwaslike,"WhyamIcrying?"It'slikethere'ssomanyunderlyingissues.SoI'dlove,ifyou'rewillingandvulnerableenoughtoshare,bothfromyourownperspectivebutalsofromworkingwithallthepeoplethatyou'vehelped,whydoyouthinkthisisaffectingwomensomuchmore?

Brittany:Oh,well,wetypicallyaremoreemotionalthanourmalecounterparts.Therearedefinitelywomenthataremorelogical,but,ifyoubreakpeopleupintoyoueitherprocessinformationemotionallyorlogically,typically,womenprocessthingsemotionally.AndIthinkthataddiction,inoursociety,isreally,reallyhigh,andfoodisaveryeasyacceptableaddictiontohave.Youknow,whenweeatit,itsoothesus,itmakesusfeelgood.Right?Soit'sreallyeasytoeatacookieratherthansitandactuallyfeelandsortthroughyouremotions.

Womenalso,especiallymothers,we'vebeentaughtthatwehavetodoeverythingforeveryone.AndIthinkthatwe,for,atleastmostofthewomenthatIworkwith,Iknowmepersonally,ourparentsandourmothersdidn'tsetagoodexampleof,"I'mgonnatakecareofmefirst,anduntilmycupoverfloweth,andthen,Itakecareofyou."Ithinkespecially,andyouwouldknowthisbetterthanme,there'salotofshamingthatgoesonwithmoms.Ifyou'renotputtingyourfamilyfirstandifyoutakecareofyourself,it'slikeyoukindoffeelguiltyandbadaboutit.Andit'sjustbackwards.Itisabsolutelybackwards.Oursocietytellsusthatweneedtotakecareofeveryonebeforeus,andso,it'sareally,reallyhardprogrammingtochange.Butdeepdown,weknowthatwewannatakecareofourselves.Soit'sjustareallyeasywaytokindoftakecareofourselves,togiveusthatlittle,like,soothingfeelingofeatingacookieor,youknow,eatingsomepizza,oreatingsomekindof,like,naughtyfood.Itgivesusthisboostofserotonin,whichmakesusfeelreallygood,andthat'sactuallywhatwe'relookingfor,we'relookingforwaystofeelgood.SoIdon'tknow,doesthatansweryourquestion?

Katie:Itdoes.Itmakessense.AndIfeellikewehavethiskindofviciouscombinationofboth,exactlylikeyousaid,alloftheseemotionalfactorsinsocietycombinedwiththefactthatthey'vebeenengineeringfoodstobehighlyrewarding.Andso,we'rekindafightingabattleonbothfronts.AndIknowIgetalotofquestionsabouttapping,andit'snotsomethingIamanexpertinbyanymeans,soI'dloveifyoucouldjuststart,evenformysake,withaverybasicexplanationof,like,whattappingactuallyisandwhattheprocesslookslike.

Brittany:Sure,sure,sure.Okay,sothisisthepartthatIlovebecauseIfindthatalotofpeople,whentheyexplaintapping,theyexplainitinasortoflike...itisamind-bodyenergytechniquebutthere'sactualscience,there'sbrainscience.AndmyveryfirstpartnerwasthePhDresponsibleforEFTbecomingaclinically-proventechnique.SoIactuallyunderstandwhat'sgoingoninthebrain.SoI'llexplainthatpartofittoyoubecauseIthinkit'ssuper,superinteresting,andoncepeopleunderstandthis,it'slike,"Oh,okay."Eventhoughitlookskindofweird,it'seasierforthemtogivethemselvespermissiontoactuallydoit.

spongewithabunchofholes.Sowhattheseindentationsare,arebasicallynegativememories.Soweallhavehundredsofthousandsofnegativeexperiencesthathappeninourlives.Right?Itcouldbesomethingreally,reallyextremetosomethinglikebeingstartledbyabarkingdogorsomebodydroppingacupandtheglassbreaking.Right?

Sowehavethisstoragecenter,basically,ofallthesenegativememoriesthatwehave,andpositiveones.Andwhathappenswhenwearelivingourlivesandsomethingremindsusofsomethingnegativethathappenedtousinthepast,thislittleindentationsendsasignaltotheamygdala,whichisourbody'salarmsystem,andittellsustofeelstressedorsadorscaredorhaveanxiety.Andso,whattappingdoes,andthisiswhatIloveabouttappingsomuch,is,whenwe'reworkingwithit,wezeroinontheproblem.Andso,youknow,ifyouandIaretalkingaboutcravings,we'llzeroinontheactualmemorythatyouhaveofeatingthatfood.Or,ifwe'retalkingaboutemotionaleating,we'llzeroinonthememoryandthenegativefeelingthat'scausingyoutowanttoeatemotionally.

Andthatactually,whenwezeroinonit,wezeroinononeofthelittleindentationsinthesponge,andthen,bytapping...Sowetapondifferentacupressurepoints.It'sthesamepointsystemthattheChinesehavebeenusingforacupuncture.Ithinkalotofpeopleuseacupuncture.Soit'sbasicallyself-appliedacupressure,sowejusttapon...there'sninedifferentpointsthatweuse,thatwecyclethroughaswe'redoingthetechnique,andthey'resuper,supereasytolearn.Onceyoulearnthepointsystem,everythingelsebecomesreallyeasy.Soasyoutapthroughthepoints,whatthatdoesisitsendsafloodofserotonintothislittleindentationinthebrainanditseversthatconnection,soitnolongersendstheamygdalaasignalandtellsittobeupset.Sothismeansthat,ifyouwerelittle,forinstance,andyougotbitbyadog,andthen,inyouradultlife,youheardogsoryouseeadogandyoukindoftenseuplikethat,wecoulddoonesessiontogetherandyouwillneverhavethatsamereactiontoadoganymore.

Sobasicallywhathappensis,it'salmostlikethememoryhappenedtosomebodyelse.Whichissocool,itisthemostrapidhealingtoolthatI'veeverexperienced,thatI'veeverfound,andit'sjustamazing.Ifeelsosadthatmorepeopledon'tknowaboutitbecauseIfeellikealotofpeoplestruggle,foryearsandyears,intherapyor,youknow,withproblemsthatcanbevery,veryquicklysolvedwith,youknow,acouplesessionsoftapping.So,doesthatkindofmakesense?

Katie:Itdoes.AndIlovethatitseemstoreallygoattherootofit,thingsthatmaybe...like,Idon'tthinkmostofuseventhinkof.Whenwehavelike,forinstance,anemotionaleatingissue,we'renotthinkingoflike,"Oh,whenIwasakid,thishappenedandthisiswhyI'mdoingthis,"andinstead,thereseemstobethismentality.Insociety,youknow,ifsomeonestruggleswiththeirweight,it'sbecausethey'relazyortheydon'thavewillpoweror,youknow...andso,there'salltheseothershamefactorsassociatedwiththat.Andso,Ifeellikethereissomuchfreedominwhatyou'resayingforpeople,ofjustrealizingthisactuallygoesbacktosomuchmorethanjustthewillpowerside.

Brittany:Oh,thatis,like,oneofmybiggestmotivationsforteachingwomenaboutthesetools,becauseitmakesmecringehowmuchwomenblamethemselvesandshamethemselvesfornotbeingabletosticktoadietplanornotbeingabletosticktoahealthyweight-lossplan.Becauseitissodifficult,you'reright.Andmostoftheproblemsthatareconnectedtoweightarehappeninginthesubconsciousmind,whichmeans

that,ifyou'renottrainedandifyoudon'tknowhowtogettotheseproblems,andifyoudon'tknowhowtogettothesememories,you'rebasicallyjustfightingyourself.Andyeah,Imean,that'swhatallofmytechniquesdo.AndI'mallaboutselfempowerment,soIwantto...allofmystudents,eventhatjusttakemycourses,theylearnhowtodothesetechniquestothemselves.Sotheydon'talwayshavetocometomeorlistentoaprogramor,youknow,dealwithatherapistinordertogetthechange.Iloveselfempowerment,soit'slikeifyouhaveafoodcraving,thisisthetechniquethatyoudo.Ifyouwanttoeatemotionally,thisisthetechniqueyoudo,thisishowyougettothatmemory,andthisishowyouchangeit.

Becauseit'snotaboutwillpower,itreallyisn't.Wehavevery,verystrongmemoriesandimprintsthatarecausingustocraveunhealthyfoodsorcausingustoeatwhenwe'renotreallyhungry.And,youknow,that'swhyIdothingslikethistojusteducatewomenandletthemknowthatit'sreallynotyourfault.Itissohardtomakethedecisiontoloseweightwhenyouhaveallthisunderlyingsubconsciousstuffthat'sgoingonthathasn'tbeencleanedupyet.

Katie:Thatmakestotalsense.Andso,I'dlovetogetalittlemoreclarityonjustacoupleofterms.Whenwetalkabout,forinstance,cravingsversusemotionaleating,canyoukindofdefinewhatthoseareandhowthey'resimilarordifferent,andwhattheybothmightrelateto?

Brittany:Sure.Okay.SoIloveteachingpeopleaboutthisbecauseitmakessomuchsenseonceyouunderstandthisconcept.So,cravingsaretypicallyfoodsthatyouthinkofthatyoucan'tkeepinthehouse.Right?Solike,youknow,withsomestudentsit'stortillachips,withotherstudentsit'schocolate,itmightbeicecreamorpizza.Youknow,they'rekindoftypical,like,junkfoodtypeoffoods.Andthesearetypicallyfoodsthatyouwillreallygooutofyourway.Like,whenyou'rehavingacravingforthesefoods,orforthisfood,youonlywantthisfoodandyouwillgowayoutofyourwaytogetthisfood.Solike,Ioncehadaclientthatdrove35minutesoutofherwaytogetthiscertainicecreamfromthiscertainplace.Andshewouldn'tkeepitinherhousebecausesheknewthatshewouldeatallofitassoonasitwasinthefreezer.Soshedidn'tkeepitinherhouse,butwhenshewantedit,shewoulddrivetotallyoutofherwaytogogetit.Soit'sthosetypesofthings.Andpeopleprobably,youknow,you'llknow,ifyouhaveoneofthesefoodsinyourlife,you'llknowit.Right?You'llbekindoflikenoddingyourheadandsmilingrightnow.

So,typically,withthesefoods...so,forme,itwaschocolatechipcookies,I'lljustgiveyoumine.Foralotofwomen,it'schocolate.So,cravings,goingbacktothememoriesandthehippocampus,cravingstypicallycomefrommemoriesofeatingthisfoodwithsomeonewelove,orduringatimethatwasreallypositiveforus.Andso,justkindofasanexercisetohaveeveryonedorightnow,thinkaboutthefoodthatyoucan'tkeepinthehouse,thatyoujusttotallydevourifit'saround,andthinkaboutyourearliestmemoriesofeatingthatfood.Whodidyoueatitwith?Whatwasgoingoninyourlife?Ninetypercentofpeoplewhostrugglewithfoodcravingswillgobacktoapositivememory.Solike,maybeit'sicecreamsundaes.Like,everySunday,I'dgogeticecreamwithdad,andthatwassuchaspecialdayandIdidn'tgettoseehimalotduringtheweek.Orifit'spizza,Ihearalotoftimeslike,"ItwasFridaynightPizzaFridays,"and,youknow,it'sthatnostalgiaofthosepositivememoriesthatgetwrappedupinthisfood.

Andso,whathappenslateroninlifeasyou'reanadultis,wheneveryou'restressedout,you'reoverwhelmed,you'renotfeelinggreat,youeatthisfood.Andbecauseyourbrainhasorganizeditinthefilingcabinetof

love...soit'snotinafoodfilingcabinet,it'sinalovefilingcabinet.Sowhenyoueatit,youfeelallthissamefloodofemotions,samefeelingsofloveandsafetyandsecurity,andmom'slove,orgrandma'slove,ordad'slove,orwhoeverit'sconnectedto,andthatmakesyoufeelreallygood.Andso,you'lltendtoovereatitbecause,Imean,whocouldevergettoomuchofmom'sloveorgrandma'slove,right?

Sothat'swherecravingscomefrom.AndwhenItalkaboutthis,typically,like,youknow,I'llseepeoplejustlike,youknow,pouringtearsdownbecausethey'venevermadethatconnectionthatthisfoodisconnectedwiththosepeople.Andit'sreally,reallyeasytoreprogramthissothatyoucaneatthosefoodswithoutovereatingthem.Youbasicallyjusthavetotellyourbrain,"Hey,thisfooddoesn'tgointhelovefilingcabinet,itgoesinthefoodfilingcabinet.Andthelovestaysinthelovefilingcabinet."It'sjustlikeyourwiresarealittlebitcrossedwhenitcomestothesefoods.Somepeopleonlyhaveoneortwoofthesefoods,somepeoplehaveatonofthem.IthinkIhadlikemorethan40differentfoodswhenIwasfirstworkingonthis.Doesthatmakesense?

Katie:Itdoes,andthat'ssuperfascinatingbecause,evenasyouaresayingthat,Iwasthinking,"Wow."So,forme,itwasneversweets.I'veneverlikedsweetsverymuch,butitwaslikewarmbread.Anditremindedmethatthatwasoneofmyearliestchildhoodmemories,liketwoyearsold,wasmakingbreadwithmymom.Andnow,Ican'teatglutensoIhaven'thadthatinyearsandyears.Butit'sinterestinghow,like,thatconnectionwasimmediate,orthingslikeMexicanfood,becausewewouldonlyevergoouttoeatliketwiceayearanditwasusuallyforMexicanfood.Sothat'sinteresting,like,howtherearethosetiestochildhoodthings.Ihadn'teventhoughtaboutthatbefore.

Brittany:That'ssuchagreatquestion.SoIexplainit,goingbacktothesponge...Ilovedoingthisvisuallyonvideos,butgoingbacktothesponge.Soifyouenvisionthatsponge,whichisyourhippocampusthathasallthesenegativememoriesinit,whatwenoticewithbrainimagingdevicesis,everytimeyoutap,theseindentationsactuallygetsmoothedover.Soimagine,overtimeandoveraperiodoftapping,sectionbysection,cornerbycorner,alloftheselittleindentationsarebecomingfilledup.So,overtime,youhaveaspongewithnoholesinitanymoreor,youknow,maybeveryfewholesinit.Andthat'stypicallywhenyouonlyusetappingformaintenance.Soyes,that'sagreatquestion,youdon'thavetokeepdoingiteverysingletimeyouhaveacravingoreverysingletime...Infact,actually,whenyouusethisforcravings,cravingsareaone-hitwonder.Sothethingis,youhavetoworkwithcravingsindividually.Butlike,forinstance,ifyouhaveaproblemwithchocolate,wecandoonesessionaroundchocolate.And,it'snotthatyou'llneverwantchocolateagain,whatitisisyourrelationshipwiththatchocolatewillbethatoflikeanormal-eatingperson.Soyouwon'thavethatdesiretoovereatitanymore.

So,itisgreatand,likeIsaidearlier,whatwe'venoticedisthat,usually,withinthethreetofourmonthperiod,ifyou'reapplyingthetechniqueregularly,it'llbeabout85%to90%goneforever.Andthen,sometimes,youknow,you'llhavesomethingthatwilltriggeryouthat'llcomeup,andthen,youjustdoonesession,you'llknowexactlyhowtousethetechniques.Again,Iloveit,it'stotal,like,selfempowerment,youlearnhowtousethetechniquesonyourown.Soifyou'reatafamilydinnerorifyou'restressedout,youcangointothebathroomorjustgetsomespacefor10minutes,dothistechnique,andcomebacktothedinner,andyou'retotallyrelaxedandyoudon'thavethattriggeranymore.Soyeah,itispermanentresults,youdon'thavetokeepusingit.Buttheresultsarebestifyouuseitfrequentlyoveraperiodoftime.Likewithin,youknow,threetosixmonths,Itellpeopletouseitregularly.

Brittany:Yes,that'sagreatquestion.Sothatwouldfallintothecategoryofemotionaleating.Soyou'reeatingbecause,youknow,thekidshavegonetobed,you'vehadalongstressfulday,thisisfinallyyourtime.Butit'sactuallycomingfromadesiretogetawayfromstress.Sonighttimeeating,ifyouwatchthatvideoandifyouimagineyourself...orifyoudoitatnightwhenyou'recravingsomefoods,you'llnotice,withinfivetosevenminutes,thatyouwon'thavethedesireforfoodanymore.Also,justfromatacticalstandpoint,thistypicallycomesfrom...there'sacouplereasonsthatwomendothis.Numberone,they'renotmanagingtheirstresswellduringtheday.Numbertwo,sometimestheywakeupandtheystarttheirdayoffdietingandtheydon'teatenoughduringthedayalso.Andso,youknow,youwannamakesurethatyouhavegivenyourselfenoughfuel,becauseduringthedayiswhenyou'rethebusiestandthat'swhenyouneedthemostamountoffuel.AndIfindthatalotofwomen,they'llkindofwakeupwithadietmentality,likehavelikea200-calorieproteinshakeandasaladforlunch.Andthat'sjustnotenoughfoodforthefirstpartofyourday.

Brittany:Oh,allthetime,allthetime.Idon'tteachpeoplehowtoeat,becausethat'snotwhatIdo.Itypicallyfocusonthepsychologyofit.Butwhenthey'reusingthetechniquesandifthey'restillstruggling,thatusuallydoesn'thappen.Andthen,ifthatdoeshappen,Ihavethemwriteafoodjournal,andabsolutely,100%ofthetime,they'reeating,youknow,maybe500caloriesthroughoutthedayor1,000caloriesuntil8:00atnight,andI'mjustlike,"Thisisjustnotenoughfoodforyourbody."Soit'sfromyearsoflivinginadietculture,andso,Igetit.Igetwhywomendoit.Andit'sreallyscary,ifyou'reoneofthosewomen,it'sscarytostarteatingmore.ButIjusttellpeople,"Youknowwhat?Like,trytoflipitforaweekandstarteatingmore,inthebeginningofyourday,andthen,seeifthatnighttimeeatingisstillhappening."BecauseIwouldguessthatyou'llnoticeamassivechangeinjustusingthattechnique.

Katie:Thatmakessense.Andit'sprobablyalsohelpfulwiththeaddressingtheemotionalside,forthemtobeabletoshiftandstartthinkingoffoodasfuelandnotjustthisnegativething.AndIlovethatyoutalkaboutthat,becauseIfeellikethisisharmingwomenalot.Mysidebeinginthenutritionside,Idefinitelyseethat.Andso,I'mgladthatyou'regivingpeopletoolstoactuallystarthealingthat.And,onthatnote,Iknowwhenwewereinperson,wetalkedaboutthisalittlebitandI'dlovetogoontherecordwithitbecauseyoumentionedthatsomanyoftheseemotional-eatingissuesgobacktolikeapositiveexperienceinchildhood,orevensometimesmaybeanegativeexperienceinchildhood.So,foralltheparentslistening,I'dlovetohearanyadviceyouhaveforparentsforkeepingkidsfromcravingunhealthyfoods,orhowcanweavoidtheseassociationsorteachourkidsahealthyrelationshipwithfoodfromthebeginning?

Brittany:Suchagreatquestion.AndIhadtokindofthinkaboutthisbecauseIdon'tdoalotofworkwithkids.ButwhenIreallythoughtabout,"Okay,whenI'mworkingwithadults,we'realwaysgoingbacktochildhood,"andso,Iactuallydoworkwithkidsalot,Ijustdon'tworkwithkidsinperson.SowhatIthinkthemostimportantthingtodoistochangeyourrelationshipwithfood.Becausekidsareveryintuitive.Ifyou'reeatingicecreamandyou'relike,"Ohmygosh,thisissogood.Thisisthebesticecream.Iloveit,"thatyou'reveryemotionally-chargedwhileyou'reeatingicecream.That'sverydifferentthansomebodythat'seatingicecreamandgoing,"Wow,thisicecreamisreallygreat."Youseethedifferenceintheenergythere?So,becausekidsaresoenergetic,theyaregonnabepickinguplike,"Oh,okay.That'showyoueaticecream,"andso,theyconnect...somekids,notall,andIdon'tknowwhatmakesthedifferencebetweenkidsthatconnectemotionswithfoodandkidsthatdon't,butoneofthebestthingsthatyoucandoistoworkonyourown...haveahealthyrelationshipwithyourselfandfood.

whenshewantstogetthemtodosomethingreallyboring,she'llsayitwithareallyexcitingtone,like,"Don'tyouguyswannacomeinthecarwithmeandgotoCostcoandrunerrandsallday?"They'relike,"Yeah,totally."Right?Andso,whenyouusethatsameenergy,like,"Hey,youguyswannagogeticecreamandcookiesandhangoutandeatpizza?"Likewhenyouhavethatkindofenergyaroundit,itsometimes,forsomekids,canmakethatconnectionoflike,"Oh,thisfoodmeans,like,joy,andpleasure,andfun,andexcitement,andrelaxation."Butifyoukindofhavelikeamoreneutraltoneaboutit,like,"Doyouwannagetsomeicecream?"or,"Hey,doyouwantacookierightnow?"it'sverydifferent.It'sjustneutral.It'slikethisisn'tsomethingthatissomethingtobeoverlyexcitedabout,it'sjustnormal.It'slikesaying,"Doyouwantasliceofpizza?"or,"Doyouwantachickenbreast?"or,"Doyouwanttoeatdinnertonight?"SothosearethetwobigdifferentiationsthatIsee.Andthen,alsonotputtingalotofnegativeenergyaroundfood.Sosomeparentsgotheextremeand,like,won'tlettheirkidshaveanythingthat'sunhealthy.AndIthinkthat'salso...thatcancreateanegativerelationshipwithfoodinadifferentway.Sothatcancreatesecreteaters,kidsthatwillhidefoodintheirroomandeatitbecausethey'rekindof,like,shamedorit'stakenawayfromthem.

SoI'dsayjustcreatehealthyboundariesaroundfood,letthemhavealittlebit.And,youknow,they'llcomplainandthey'llwantmoreandthingslikethat,andit'sfinetonotletthemkeepeating,andI'mdefinitelynotsayingletyourkidsgorgeonunhealthyfoods,butmakesurethatthere'sabalanceandthatiftheywantsomecandyorsomeunhealthythings,thattheygetthatsometimes.Because,youknow,reallifeisthat,whenwe'readults,likethe80/20rulekindofapplies.Right?Like,Ieathealthy80%ofthetimebut20%ofthetimeIeatsweetsandtreatsandthingsthatIwant.Andso,Ithink,youknow,usingthatmethodwithyourkidsaswelljustreallyhelpsthemcreateahealthyrelationshipwithfood,overtimeandasadults.

Katie:Ilovethat.AndIthink,you'reright,it'ssokeythatweaddressitinourselvesfirst.And,asanadditional...justtoaddontothat,Iknowonethingwereallytrytofocusonwithourkids,forinstance,isnottyingsweetsespecially,butfoodsingeneral,toareward.Soifthere'sgonnabeadessertorsomething,it'sjustonanormalnight.It'snotlike,"Oh,youdidsomethinggood,therefore,yougetthistreat."Andso,thesamewithbirthdays,andinanycelebration,whereyoureallydon'tfocusonthefoodverymuch.Especiallybirthdays,wetrytomakeitaboutanexperience.Andso,myhopeisthatthey'llassociatelikethosepositivememoriesofbirthdayswithlike,"Ohyeah,wewenttothezoo,"or,"Wewenttolasertag.Let'sgodosomethingfun."Justthinking,like,long-term,that'swhatIhopethatthey'lltakeintoadulthood,islikewhenthere'scelebrationorwhenthere'shappytimes,itshouldbewithpeopleyouloveanddoingsomethingyouloveversusjusteatingsomethingyoulove.

AndIlovethosetipsthatyougaveforthataswell.Ithinkit'ssomethingdefinitelytobeawareof.And,onthatnote,Iwouldguessthere'salotofpeoplelisteningwhoarehearingalotofthethingsthatyou'vesaidandit'sreallyresonatingonadeeplevel,ormaybethey'veneverconsideredthatit'snotjustaboutwillpowerorthatthere'ssomethingdeeperbesidesjustaneedtoeatfewercalories.So,onthatnote,wherewouldyousuggestpeoplestart?Itsoundsliketherecanbealotofthingsatplay,sowhereisthebestplaceforsomeonewho'snewtotappingandnewtothisidea,toreallygettheirfeetwet?
