Episode 16 - How to Think About Detail You need to decide how much you want to suggest, simplify, and where you want to put the detail. As painters we want to suggest more, rather than be literal. We are not producing a photographic reproduction. Detail should be added towards the end of the painting. It is one of the last things to be put into your work. Detail should be in your focal point and spread out from there, with less and less detail. Big shapes first, keeping them them simple for as long as you can. Because if you do that, you can compare the value and the color temperature of those shapes with each other. More than 50% is done with a larger brush. Episode 16 - How to Think About Detail

You need to decide how much you want to suggest, simplify, and where you want to put the detail.

As painters we want to suggest more, rather than be literal. We are not producing a photographic reproduction.

Detail should be added towards the end of the painting. It is one of the last things to be put into your work. Detail should be in your focal point and spread out from there, with less and less detail.

Big shapes first, keeping them them simple for as long as you can. Because if you do that, you can compare the value and the color temperature of those shapes with each other.

More than 50% is done with a larger brush.
