!THE COLLECT !O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.!!THE LESSON:!!READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the !

Book of Isaiah chapter 60 beginning at the 1st

verse!!Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes round about, and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far, and your daughters shall be carried in the arms. Then you shall see and be radiant, your heart shall thrill and rejoice; because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you,

For the coastlands shall wait for me, the ships of Tarshish first, to bring your sons from far, their silver and gold with them, for the name of the LORD your God, and for the Holy One of Israel, because he has glorified you.!!Reader:! THE EPISTLE!A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Ephesians chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse.!!For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles -- assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; that is, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace which was given me by the working of his power. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places. This was according to the eternal purpose which he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and confidence of access through our faith in him.! !

THE HOLY GOSPEL!!The Lord be with you!And also with you!

A Reading from the Holy Gospel !according to Matthew!

Glory to Christ our Saviour.!!Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him.” When Herod

the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: `And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.’ "Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going

Page 7: Epiphany2014 pages

into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.!!

From the Rector’s Notebook New Year Greetings: !

To Thee we come, O gracious Lord, the new-born year to bless; defend our land from pestilence; give peace and plenteousness Hymn 95 CPWI Hymnal !It was with these words while on our knees here in the St. David’s Church that we launched into the year 2014. !Before that we had reflected on God’s word giving thanks for the strength and power that comes from the holy name of Jesus. !We launched into prayer, penitence and absolution, then church was plunged into darkness; and the church bells rang, while the liturgy flowed into a flute solo of “auld lang syne”. !This piece was played by Barbadian flute virtuoso Mr. Atiba Griffith who is in the final year of a Ph.D programme in Economics at UWI, Cave Hill. !Finally the lights were turned on as we entered 2014 with the words from that wonderful hymn

!7

Page 8: Epiphany2014 pages

“The year has gone beyond recall” the author of which is unknown. !We entered the new year with many questions and many uncertainties. The uncertainty comes as we face very challenging economic times with the accompanying fear of job losses in both public and private sector. !As members of church we are also very much part of a social, political and economic world. The term church is multivalent and can mean many different things. It is of course the divine society as the Dean Emeritus Harold E Crichlow would always remind us. !The 'church' is also a reality in the world and its members must deal with all of the issues that come before society. Religion does not offer a buffer neither does it make us immune to struggle. !Our Lord would often say to his disciples, In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33 !The Government, the labour unions, senior administrators, the various social engineers and church leaders must be involved in the discussion and must be able to help society deal with the challenges so that there is no long term displacement in the midst of limited options. !At this time, we pray for home and family life with the potential strains that would accompany the adjustments that have to be made to get the economy on an even keel once again. !

!8

Page 9: Epiphany2014 pages

As we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany we pray that the guiding light that led the magi to Christ would lead us to God’s House where we would find the grace to help in time of need. !On behalf of the Parochial Church Council, my family and myself let me wish everyone all of the very best and God’s richest blessings in the New Year. !Your friend and priest, !Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !
