Who May AttendThenormalprerequisitetohighschoolissuccessfulcompletionofgradenine.Studentswhoareorwillbe19priortoSeptem-ber1stmustmeetwithanadministratorpriortocompletingtheirregistration.Individualswhoare20oroveronSeptember1staredirectedtovisitthelocalcollegetoexplorefurthereducationopportunities.ForeignandOut-of-ProvinceStudentsaresubjecttoatuitionfeeinadditiontoregularschoolfees.TheOutreachschoolalsoacceptsadultstudents.
Fees Aregistrationfeeisrequiredofallstudents.AdditionalfeesarerequiredforCTScoursesandotherelectives.Aswell,thereareyearbookandgradfees.Studentsplayingonschoolteamswillhavefeesrelatedtothatparticipationaswell.Feeswillbeitem-izedintheStudentHandbook.
High School Flexibility Enhancement ProjectTheHighSchoolFlexibilityEnhancementPilotProjectisanop-portunityaffordedtosixteenhighschoolsintheprovince.Essen-tiallyitallowsEPCtoofferprogrammingthatfocusesmoreonoutcomesandcompletion,eliminatingtheteachertostudenttimerequirement.Itencouragescreativetimetablingandallowsustoputinplaceopportunitiesforstudentstoachievemoreattheirownpaceandlessaccordingtorigidschedules.Increasingly,EPCwillbeaddingopportunitiesforflexibilityintoourschoolyear.Pleaseseethehighlighteddescriptorsintheguidebookforspecificopportunities.InresponsetotheHighSchoolRe-designProjectwehavead-justedourtimetabletocreatea65minuteFlexblock.DuringthisFlexblock,studentswillhaveopportunitytoreceiveacademicsupportandenrichment.

Course InformationCourse Credits:Eachcourseisassignedacreditvalue(usu-ally3forhalfcoursesand5forfullcourses)asdeterminedbyAlbertaEducation.Toreceivecreditsinacourse,astudentmustachieveamarkof50%orhigher.
Course prerequisites: Prerequisitesforeachcourseareoutlinedinthisguide.Coursestandingsarereportedaspercent-ages.
ProvincialExams:AnystudentwhoisenrolledinEnglish30-1or30-2,Mathematics30Pureor30Applied,Social30-1-or30-2,FrenchLA30,Science30,Biology30,Chemistry30,orPhysics30mustwriteaprovincialdiplomaexaminthesubject.Thefinalmarkwillbeacombinationoftheschoolmarkandtheprovincialexammark(50/50weighting).ProvincialdiplomaexamsarewritteninJanuary,JuneandAugustonaschedulesetbyAlbertaEducation
Course Variety: Ourcourseofferingsareasvariedaspossible;however,sufficientdemandmustexistbeforeasectionisactu-allyestablished.Youshouldmakealternatechoicesforelectivecourseswhereverpossible.Studentswhodonotsuccessfullycompleteacourseinthefirstsemestermaynotbeabletorepeatitinthesecondsemester.

Credits & Student Course Load Toobtaincredits,studentsmustobtainagradeof50%orhigherintheircoursesinGrade10,11and12.Astudentmustearnamarkof50%inacoursebeforeproceedingtothenextlevelofthatcourse.
Forexample,studentsneedtocompleteEnglish10-2beforetak-ingEnglish20-2.English10-2istheprerequisiteforEnglish20-2.Selectyourcoursesbydeterminingwhichcoursesyouintendtograduatewithandworkingbacktotheirprerequisites.Forexample,ifyouwanttograduatewithEnglish30-1,youwillprob-ablytakeEnglish20-1inGrade11andEnglish10-1inGrade10.
Insomecourses,youarerequiredtowritediplomaexaminations.Yourfinalmarksinthesecoursesaretheaverageoftheschoolbasedgradeandyourresultsonthediplomaexamination.
Students are required to carry the following course load:
• Grade10(firstyearofhighschool)studentsmusthaveafullcourseload–nospares.
• Grade11(secondyearofhighschool)studentsmusthaveafullcourseload–nospares.
• Grade12students(thirdyearofhighschoolwithatleast70creditsonSeptember1st)areallowedtomaintainaprogramwithspares.Itisrecommendedthatstudentshaveatleast30creditsintheirfinalyearbutemphasisshouldbeoncompletingtherequirementsforgraduation.Pleasecheckuniversityandcollegerequirementsbeforeyouschedulespares.Sparesshouldbeusedtostudy,completehomeworkandimprovegrades.

» AtthebeginningofSemester2,whenastudentdemon-stratesthattheyhavetheclassesandcreditsinplacetoearnanAlbertaHighSchoolDiplomaorCertificateofHighSchoolAchievement,theywillbeaddedtotheCommencementlist.
MAKING SENSE OF CLASSES CORE COURSESCoursesinEnglish,SocialStudies,MathematicsandScienceareofferedatseverallevels.
• Coursesnumbered10-1,20-1,30-1,10–20-30and31aredesignedprimarilyforstudentsplanningonenteringauniversityorcertainprogramsincollegesandtechnicalschools.
• Coursesnumbered10-2,20-2,and30-2aredesignedprimarilyforstudentsplanningonenteringcertainprogramsincolleges,technicalandtradeschoolsorgettingajob.
• Coursesnumbered14-24aredesignedprimarilyforstudentsplanningongettingajobimmediatelyaftergraduation.
Yourjuniorhighmarksareusuallythebestindicatorofhowyouwilldoinhighschool,itisalwayspossible,witheffort,toimprovethem.
ELECTIVE COURSESElectivecoursesofferyouachancetobroadenyourknowledgebystudyingavarietyofsubjects.Someelectivecourseswillhelpyoubuildskillsthatwillhelpyougetandkeepajob.Approxi-mately25to35creditsofstudyinaparticularareacouldprovideabasisforgettingajob.Thisincludesfinearts,CTS,Phys.Ed,SecondLanguagesandmanyothercourses.
ScienceandMathcoursesata30levelcanbeconsideredtobeelectivecourses.Makesuretocheckandseeifthepostsecond-aryschoolyouareplanningonattendingrequiresall3sciencesandamath.Oftenthisisnotthecaseunlessyouareplanningontakingengineeringormedicine.

Grade12fineartsclasses(Music30,Drama30andArt30)canbeusedtomeetentrancerequirementsformanyuniversityprograms.Highmarksintheseclassesmayhelpastudent’saverage.
CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES (CTS) CLASSESCareerandTechnologyStudiesisaprogramdevelopedbyAlbertaLearningencompassingBusinessEducation,HomeEco-nomics,IndustrialArts,PracticalArtsandVocationalcourses.
CTSisdividedintostrandsandcourses.Strandsarethesub-jectareasandcoursesarethebuildingblocksforeachstrand.Coursesdefinewhatastudentisexpectedtoknowandbeabletodouponexit.
CTSismodular,studentswhoenrollinaCTScourseareactuallytakingmanycoursesratherthanonelengthycourse.Onecoursesuccessfullycompletedequalsonecredit.Thepassingmarkis50%.
Coursesareorganizedintothreelevels-introductory(1000’s),intermediate(2000’s)andadvanced(3000’s).Specificcoursesareprerequisitesforothercourseswithinandacrossthethreelevels.
High School Diploma Grad Requirements
Studentsmustassumerespon-sibilitytoensuretheymeetrequirementsoftheAlbertaHighSchoolDiplomaortheCertificateofHighSchoolAchievement.Ifyouareindoubtorhaveques-tions,checkwithMr.Byersearlysothatprogramadjustmentscanbemade.

HIGH SCHOOL COURSE WITHDRAWALS AND TRANSFERS
Studentsshouldcarefullychoosetheircourseswhenregisteringsoastokeeptransferandwithdrawalrequeststoaminimum.
Studentsaskingtotransferorwithdrawclassesmustensurethattheirtimetablestillmeetstheminimumrequirementsfortheirgrade.
Studentsmaytransfercoursesinthefirsttwoweeksofeachsemester,afterconsultationwiththeCareerCounsellor.
Studentswhoarefailingacourseatthemid-termpointshoulddiscusstheirsituationwiththeirteacherandtheirparents.Stu-dentsmaydropacorecourseonlywithparentalapproval,andonlyifthestudentcanstillmeettheprogramrequirementslistedabove.ThismaymeantheenrolmentinaVirtualSchoolcourseorCTScourse.A“W”forwithdrawalforcoursesoranINCforincompleteCTScourseswillappearonthestudents’transcript.
Studentsshouldnotdropaclassiftheyintendontakingthecourseinthenextsemesterornextyear.Studentsareencour-agedtorepeatthecoursetoimprovetheirmark.
ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY MODES AT E.P.C.S.
Moststudentstaketheircoursesthroughclassroomdelivery.WeexpecteachstudentinGrade10and11tohaveafulltimetable.Thiswouldincludefourcourses,plusaflexperiodcourse,foratotalof5coursespersemester.However,wedooffercoursesoutsideoftheregulartimescheduleandoutsideoftheregularboundariesoftheschoolcampus.
AFTER HOURS COURSES
AnumberofcoursesatEdwinParrCompositeSchoolareofferedintheevening,afterschoolorduringweekends.Thesecoursesvaryfromyeartoyearbutthecoursesplannedaredescribedinthisbooklet.(seeAfterHoursClassessection).
OFF-CAMPUS EDUCATIONGrade11and12students(andGrade10studentsintheKnowl-edge&EmployabilityProgram)cantakecoursesthatrequiretimespentonworksitesinthecommunity.Thesecanbeduringschooltimeoroutsideofschooltime,dependingonthesituation.Creditsarebasedonthenumberofhoursspentattheworksite(25hours=1credit).Evaluationsarebasedonthestudent’ssuccessatworkasdeterminedjointlybytheemployerandthesupervisingteacher.RefertothesectionontheRAPprogramandTech.Prep.,thecoursedescriptionsforOccupa-tionsintheKnowledge&EmployabilityProgramsection.
ASPEN VIEW VIRTUAL SCHOOLAspenViewVirtualSchoolisanonlineschooldesignedtoprovidestudentswiththesamehighqualityprogrammingbutthroughanalternativeformofinstruction.A.V.V.S.usesMoodle(acoursemanagementsystemthatincludesgradebook,quizzes,andprivateemailon-line)todeliverthecoursestothestudents.Allcoursesareadministeredbyateamofcertifiedteacherswhohaveanassignedgroupofstudents,astheywouldiftheywereworkinginaconventionalsetting.
A.V.V.S.isprimarilyusedtogivestudentsanopportunityto:• Takecoursesthattheycouldnotfitintotheirschedules• Takecoursesthatarenotofferedbyclassroominstruction• Takecoursesoutsideoftheregularclassroom

OUTREACH PROGRAMTheAthabascaOutreachSchoolisafacilityforstudentsunder20yearsofagetocompletetheirhighschooleducationinaflex-ible,self-pacedenvironment.Studentsworkattheircontractedpaceondistancelearningmaterialwiththesupportofprofes-sionalstaff.30-Levelstudentsareencouragedtotakecoursesthroughtheclassroomorbydistanceeducation.AdmissioniswiththeapprovalofanadministratorandtheOutreachteacher.

HOME SCHOOLINGStudentswhowishtoreceivetheirfulleducationathomemaydosothroughEdwinParrCompositeSchool.Studentsandparentsshouldfirstmeetwithamemberoftheadministrationtoregisterthestudent.ThestudentwillreceiveinstructionthroughtheAl-bertaDistanceLearningCentre(Barrhead),usingtheirmaterialsandinstructors.HomeeducationstudentsregisteredatEdwinParrCompositeSchoolareconsideredEdwinParrCompositeSchoolstudentsandthereforeareallowedtoparticipateinextra-curricularactivitiessuchassportsteams,trips,ordances.Homeeducationstudentsalsohaveaccesstoschoolresourcessuchasthelibraryandcounsellingservices,withinnormaloperatingprocedures.Theyalsomustpaythesameschoolresourcefeesasotherstudents.
SUMMER SCHOOLShouldtherebeasufficientnumberofrequestsforacourseandateacherinterestedingivinginstruction,selectcoursesmightbeofferedduringthesummermonths.
COURSE CHALLENGESCoursechallengesallowstudentswhohavecompletedcourserelatedwork,andcandemonstratethattheypossesstheknowl-edge,skillsandattitudesrequiredtogothroughaformalassess-ment.Thiswillmostlikelyinvolvewritinganexamandcomplet-ingotherassignments.Studentsmustpresentevidenceshowingtheirunderstandingofthecourseworkbeforetheyrequestacoursechallenge.

REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (RAP)TheRegisteredApprenticeshipProgramisanapprenticeshipprogramthatpermitshighschoolstudentstobecomeafirstyearapprenticeandreceiveanAlbertaHighSchoolDiplomawhileattendinghighschool.StudentscanentertheRAPprogramthroughtworoutes.
CareerstheNextGeneration:StudentsapplytotheRAPcoordi-natorandareselectedbasedonapersonalinterview,attendance(95%orbetter)andschoolaverage(65%orbetter).StudentsareplacedwithemployersbytheCareersNextGenerationstaff.Thesestudentsmustdoa125-hourtrialperiodbeforetheyaresignedupasanapprentice.
RAPStudentsfindtheirownapprenticeship(possiblyincludingfamilyorfriendsasemployers).TheythenmakearrangementswiththeRAPcoordinatortohavetheirprogramformalized.Studentsmustmaintainapassingaverageinallcoursesandbeprogressingatareasonableratetograduate.
TheRAPapprenticeisafull-timehighschoolstudent.ARAPap-prenticeaccumulateshoursofonthejobtrainingascredittowardahighschooldiploma.
StudentsmaybegintheprocessofenteringRAPinGrade10.ItisrecommendedthatstudentswhowishtotakeRAPinGrade11and12,takeCALM20inGrade10.

Step 1: Know Your Needs and GoalsStudentsregisteringinhighschoolshouldhaveaneducationalgoalinmindsothatchoosingcoursesisameaningfulprocess.Ifeducationalgoalsarenotdefined,studentsshouldregisterinthehighestlevelofacademiccoursesinwhichtheycansucceed.Studentsshouldtrytochoosehighschoolcourseswhichreflecttheirjuniorhighachievement.Thinkingaheadhelpsyouplanbetter!

K & E ProgramsK&ECoursesareavailabletostudentsingrades8-12whomeetspecificeducationalcriteria.Thecoursesareintendedtoprovidestudentswithop-portunitiestoexperiencesuccessandbecomewellpreparedforemployment,furtherstudies,activecitizenshipandlifelonglearning.KnowledgeandEmployabilityCoursesaredesignedtoprovideentry-levelemploymentskillsforstudentswhohaveexpressedagoalofleavingschoolbeforeearningtherequirementsforaseniorhighschooldiploma.SomestudentsmaytransitionsuccessfullyfromKnowledgeandEmploy-abilityCoursestoothercoursestoachieveaseniorhighschooldiplomaortocontinuingeducationandtrainingopportunities;e.g.somecolleges,andapprenticeshipprograms.Reviewingeachstudent’slearningplansonanannualbasisandadjustingtheirgoalsandcoursesasneededareimportantpartsoftheprocess.

Step 3: Understanding How Credits are Awarded1.Youearnthecreditsattachedtoahighschoolcoursebyobtainingamarkof50%orhigher.Youhavetheoptionofrepeatingthecoursetoearnahighermarkbutcreditsaregrantedonlyonceforanycourse.2.RetroactiveCredits:Studentswhoachieveamarkbetween45-49%maycontinueatthenextgradelevelinthelowerprogramroutewiththeap-provaloftheschoolPrincipal.Inthesecases,studentswhosuccessfullycompletethenextgradelevelcoursewillearncreditforthecoursetakenandforitsnormalprerequisite.Forexampleifyouhadamarkbetween45-49%inEnglish20-1,youcouldtakeEnglish30-2,andifyoupassedthatcourseyouwouldearnretroactivecreditsforEnglish20-2

4.Grade10CourseEntranceCriteria-HighSchoolprogramsrecognizeandaccommodatethewiderangeofdevelopmentalneeds,abilities,anddif-ferencesthatexistamongstudents.Inordertobesuccessfulinhighschool,Grade9studentsareexpectedtomeetthecriteriaoutlinedinthecoursesequencesprovidedinthisguide.Pleaserefertoeachcoresectiontoensurethatyoufullyunderstandwhatrequirementsareneededinordertoenrollinspecificcourses.
PrerequisiterequirementsmaybewaivedbytheCareerCounsellororthePrincipalontherecommendationofthesendingschool,underspecialcir-cumstances,and/orinresponsetoanappealfromastudentandhis/herparents.Thesejudgmentswillbemadeonanindividualbasis.

Marine BiologyContact:Mrs.GlendaGray&Mr.ScottGrayCredits:5Prerequisite:Science10(co-requisite)Content:MarineBiologyisanacademicscienceoptionthatincorporatesskillsfromthedisciplinesofphysicaleducation,science,outdooreducationandwildlife.CreditsforthiscoursewillbereceivedthroughcompletionofavarietyofWildlifeCTSmodules(specificmodulesTBA)withafocusonmarinewildlife.
ThisclasswillrunfromtheendofApril2010andwillbecompletedattheendofJune,2011.Classeswillbeheldonceamonth.Theywilltakeplacefrom3:30p.m.untilapproximately5:30p.m.onweekdayevenings.Therewillbeatleast5fieldtrips,twoofthembeingmulti-day.Thefinalfieldtripwilltakeplaceinmid-May,andprovidesanexcellentopportunityforstudentstoapplyalltheyhavelearnedthroughouttheclasses,includ-ingtheknowledgeandtheskills.Thisfinalexpeditionwillbeatleast7daysinduration,andwilltakeplaceonCanada’sbeautifulwestcoast.
Thisisanextensiveacademicprogram.Itsemphasisisonhands-onandfieldbasedlearning.StudentswillbecomecertifiedSCUBAdivers,theywillstudytheinternalanatomyofavarietyoforganismsthroughdissectionandresearch,theywillbecomefamiliarwithmanyorganismscommontoCanada’swestcoast,andtheywillhavetheopportunitytointeractwiththeseorganismsintheirnaturalhabitats.The approximate cost for participation in this program is $2900.00.
