Executive Summary

The Summer Bridge Academy (SBA) is a free intensive summer academic program

designed to help incoming first-time Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) freshmen

make a smooth transition from high school to college. All incoming EOP first-time freshman

are required to participate in the Summer Bridge Academy. Summer Bridge participants

are placed in academic courses based on their English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry

Level Mathematics (ELM) exam. Therefore, it is very important that students take these

tests as early as possible in their senior year of high school. Summer Bridge students take

two or three college courses and upon successful completion can earn 4 to 9 units of

college credit.

In the summer 2015, two hundred and twenty one students completed the program. There

were ten different courses offered and more than 92% of students completed three or

more classes. The overall passing rate of the program was 93.5%.

In collaboration with the Peer and Academic Resource Center (PARC), students

participated or attended different workshops such as “Time Management” and “Taking

Notes – Get the A’s.”

The GREEN certificate of the Leadership Initiative (LI) provides an introduction to

leadership and students development theory complemented by different events within

each level including “Introduction to the Leadership Initiative,” “Consciousness of Self,” and

“Congruence and Commitment.” Eight one percent (81%) of SBA students earned this level.

There was a 35% increase from the summer 2014.

Finally, SBA students completed the “Student’s Opinion about College” survey. Majority of

the students responded positively to the 28 questions on the pre- and post-assessment

surveys. There was a 2% improvement in the total score between the pre- and post-

assessment.

Mission Statement

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at Sacramento State offers and administers

the Summer Bridge Academy (SBA). The primary mission of SBA is to provide intensive

academic coursework, counseling, and advising to aid in the “on-time” graduation goals of

the university. SBA is designed to provide assistance to EOP freshman. The program is a

six-week intensive academic preparation and college orientation program. The SBA

program works collaboratively with staff and faculty to engage students in an ongoing

transition process from high school to college. In addition, the program focuses on

academics, social network, and personal development which creates a foundation for

persistence towards a timely graduation.

Program Goals

Goal 1:

The EOP Summer Bridge Academy will close the achievement gap by providing courses

that better equip students for college level reading, writing, and mathematics.

Goal 2:

The EOP Summer Bridge Academy will facilitate a positive campus experience through

engagement and leadership development.

Goal 3:

The EOP Summer Bridge Academy will provide comprehensive first-year advising that

focuses on utilizing campus resources, understanding of EOP, and graduation

requirements.

Population of EOP Summer Bridge Students

Summer Bridge Academy provides opportunities to Sacramento State and EOP students

who are low-income, and first-generation college students. Students must be recent high

school graduates and are California residents.

SBA completed class placement on June 21, 2015. All 248 students were placed in

appropriate courses based on EPT/ELM and EAP scores. Directed Self Placement (DSP) was

not used for placement, because access to student reports was not accessible.

At the beginning of the Academy, we expected 248 students to participate in the program.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, not all students participated or completed the academy.

EOP followed up with every student. Most of the students who did not participate decided

not to attend Sacramento State and/or did not attend the mandatory New Student

Orientation on June 29, 2015. Three students were exempt from the Academy due to

hardships. A total of 221 students completed the program this summer.

Program Outcomes

This academic year, the Vice President of the Division of Student Affairs decided to align

department goals with the university’s goals. The structure of this section will include the

university’s goals, the department goals, the strategies to achieve those goals, and the

outcomes.

University Goal #1 – Enhance student learning and success

Program Goal 1: In support of the University’s Finish to Four campaign, we wanted SBA

students to be a step ahead of the freshmen class by providing courses that will better

equip them for college level reading, writing, and mathematics.

In collaboration with the English, Ethnic Studies, Theater, and Math Departments we

offered a variety of courses to SBA students. We also offered tutoring in the classroom and

during open lab hours to increase passing rates. In partnership with the English

Department, we developed courses that fulfill Early Start requirements and replaced

English 87 and 87M with new courses.

More than 92% of SBA students enrolled in three or more classes. About 7.6% of them

were enrolled in two courses because they received credit from Advance Placement (AP),

International Baccalaureate (IB) scores, or took courses at a community college. Majority of

the students successfully completed their courses. The overall passing rate for the Summer

Bridge program was 93.5%. Table 1 shows the passing rate for each course offered.

Program Goal 3: In line with the University’s strategy of increasing the number of students

involved in formal leadership and other personal and professional development programs,

we incorporated the Leadership Initiative (LI) in the ALS 79 course. There was a 35%

increase of students who earned their LI GREEN Certificate.

Figure 1. Percentage of Students who Earned their GREEN Certificate

Program Goal 4: SBA students will respond positively on the “Student’s Opinions about

College” survey. This survey is administered to SBA students twice (before and after the

program) and consists of 28 questions that assess different areas of student engagement.

They are: 1) Sense of Belonging, 2) Group Self-Efficacy, 3) Individual Academic Self-

Efficacy, 4) Institutional Commitment to Sacramento State, 5) Intention to Complete Degree

at Sacramento State (Intent not to Transfer), and 6) Leadership.

Figure 2 shows the SBA 2015 results based on the different areas. The total desirable

outcome for the pre-assessment was 91% while the post-assessment was 93%, a two

percent increase. Appendix B also shows the total percentage of students who reported

somewhat agree, agree, or strongly agree on each item.

Program Highlights

Rosana Chavez-Hernandez was the EOP counselor responsible for overseeing the

“Referral for Success” process. SBA 2015 was a transitional year in which we

converted the paper referral form to an online process. Most forms were submitted

through the ARISE website (www.sacsteopretention.org). The online system saved

time by electronically tracking forms that were submitted. This new system also

allowed us to track student absences and tardiness. Rosana stated there were no

major issues reported regarding academic and personal issues in SBA 2015.

On July 17th, the two sections of the Ethic Studies 11 course visited the State Capitol.

The students participated in a Mock Legislative Hearing. Students drafted an

opinion about their position on a hypothetical piece of legislation. EOP Staff

volunteered to act as the Senators during the mock committee hearing.

Several students participated in the EOP Talent Show. The performances included:

singing, choreographed dance, and a live drawing of a portrait. The event took place

on July 24th during the Summer Bash.

The advising plan for Summer Bridge 2015, remained the same as previous years.

Students were assigned to different computer labs on different days to complete

their Fall Semester 2015 class registration.

SBA Coordinator requested reports from the SASEEP IT to ensure all students in

SBA were enrolled in at least 12 units for the fall semester and all financial aid

documents received. Each counselor followed-up with their student caseloads.

EOP Counselors were available to see students all summer to help the students with

their transition to Sacramento State.

SBA students have a rigorous class schedule during the summer. Due to the high

number of students, we decided it would be best to keep the advising component in

groups rather than caseloads and individual meetings. Also, the advising sessions

were mandatory and attendance was not an issue. The advising sessions were

focused on class registration.

PAGE 9 EOP SUMMER BRIDGE ACADEMY AY 15-16 ANNUAL REPORT LAST UPDATED: 12/15/2016

Program Future Plans

For SBA 2016, we will add a second day to orientation to alleviate the class

registration process and to restructure the advising component. We found that the

PARC workshops attendance for Summer Bridge was lower than expected. The

workshops were held during students’ lunch hour. Therefore, for this upcoming

year we will be working with the faculty to find alternate times. In addition, we will

also track the number of SBA students who will participate in each workshop.

In 2016, the “Referral for Success” form will be fully implemented online and no

more paper forms will be accepted.

For 2016, we will be utilizing in our remedial math course a new textbook which

was specifically researched and designed to align the math content in Math 7B to the

Sacramento State curriculum. The textbook was done in collaboration with the Math

Learning Skills Program faculty, Sedah Tath and Dr. Ravin Pan.
