    What is an IER ?

Initial Environment review - In order to build a solid environmentalmanagement system it is essential to understand exactly how theactivities, products and services of your organization interact withthe environment.

This process will enable us to understand what aspects of yourorganization have a significant environmental impact.

It will ensure that other aspects of your environmental management

    system policy

    Objectives

    targets

and the management programme are focused on those areaswhere you can gain the most benefits.

    What does EMS require ?

EMS requires an environmental review, which should consider some keyareas and recommends items to consider when identifyingenvironmental aspects.

Four distinct requirements are listed within the Environmental Aspectssection ofEMAS:

Identify the direct and indirect environmental aspects of your activities, products and/or services.

Identify the environmental aspects that can be controlled or over whichyou have influence.

Arrive at a list of significant environmental aspects, based upon therelative environmental impact of each environmental aspect.

Develop a procedure to keep this information up-to-date.

    Identifying Significant

    Environmental Aspects: Aspects and impacts

'cause and effect' provides a useful simplification. The aspect is thecause of the impact, that is the change to the environment, or the

effect. 1. Select an activity, product or service large enough for

meaningful examination and small enough to be sufficientlyunderstood.

    2. Identify direct and indirect environmental aspects of the

activity, product or service, i.e. how does it interact with theenvironment

    3. Identify environmental impacts, considering actual andpotential, positive and negative impacts associated with eachaspect.Examples are:

    Sample training documentation

It is imperative that we train the trainers first and all ourtraining resources should effectively be from our

employees .Commitment is the most important resourcewithout which there is no use of an EMS
