What is an IER ?
Initial Environment review - In order to build a solid environmentalmanagement system it is essential to understand exactly how theactivities, products and services of your organization interact withthe environment.
This process will enable us to understand what aspects of yourorganization have a significant environmental impact.
It will ensure that other aspects of your environmental management
system policy
Objectives
targets
and the management programme are focused on those areaswhere you can gain the most benefits.

What does EMS require ?
EMS requires an environmental review, which should consider some keyareas and recommends items to consider when identifyingenvironmental aspects.
Four distinct requirements are listed within the Environmental Aspectssection ofEMAS:
Identify the direct and indirect environmental aspects of your activities, products and/or services.
Identify the environmental aspects that can be controlled or over whichyou have influence.
Arrive at a list of significant environmental aspects, based upon therelative environmental impact of each environmental aspect.
Develop a procedure to keep this information up-to-date.

Identifying Significant
Environmental Aspects: Aspects and impacts
'cause and effect' provides a useful simplification. The aspect is thecause of the impact, that is the change to the environment, or the
effect. 1. Select an activity, product or service large enough for
meaningful examination and small enough to be sufficientlyunderstood.
2. Identify direct and indirect environmental aspects of the
activity, product or service, i.e. how does it interact with theenvironment
3. Identify environmental impacts, considering actual andpotential, positive and negative impacts associated with eachaspect.Examples are:

Currently no EMS
Authorities concerned over the same
Lapses in EMS No specific operating procedures
Lacking commitment at top management
level Financial details a major cause of concern

Potassium Permanganate formation
Ammonium and other salt formations due toadditives used in paints and thinners

Objectives and targets
Objective :Controlling the effect of pollutantson the workforce and the environment and
reducing all impacts to acceptable level ofless than 10
Targets
Identifying strategies to handle particular
dust in air
Safe disposal of by-products of operations
Implement ISO 14001 pointers in all the three
service centers by the end of this year 2011

Operational Control Proposal Effectively what needs to be controlled ???
Welding Process efficient exhaust fans to control airpollution
Bauxite ,Chrome andCarbon contamination reduction Advise personnel to clean service floor from time to timeby use of vacuum cleaners
Use of dry dust cleaners rather than water hose pipes
Chemical imbalance proper enclosure

Training and Documentation
Briefing session for all employees
Step by step documented procedures for
each participant Sign boards and other mandatory display at
the workshop
Weekly updates from managers Display statistics on waste generated and
pollution containment level reached

Sample training documentation
It is imperative that we train the trainers first and all ourtraining resources should effectively be from our
employees .Commitment is the most important resourcewithout which there is no use of an EMS
