    Community Survey Results

    9/2014 2/1015

Introduction In the first phase of Envision Adams Morgan, volunteer working groups developed a report detailing the current state of our neighborhood. We then launched a survey to collect opinions and ideas from residents and local businesses in the areas of sustainability, housing, economy, transportation, community services, zoning, and historic preservation.

Between September 2014 and February 2015, we collected 535 responses and over 900 written suggestions concerning the future of the neighborhood! Survey respondents were self-selecting and responses were not tracked or weighted by demographics. While we did what we could within our means to spread the word, we acknowledge that this survey did not necessarily reach a representative sample of the over 16,000 residents of Adams Morgan. The results should be interpreted accordingly and considered reflective of the views of only those who participated in the survey. Nevertheless, those who did participate shared some excellent and constructive ideas. We encourage everyone to consider all comments offered with an open mind and in the spirit of community.

  • Q3 Do you have any ideas about how toimprove the services or facilities that are

    important to you?Answered: 148 Skipped: 387

    # Responses Date

1 I can't really answer #2 above, as I have a "no opinion" for some and, for others, I am not sure if I am answeringthe question with regard to these services in the immediate area of Adams Morgan versus citywide.

    2/8/2015 8:01 PM

2 Now that Marie Reed Elementary School is in the motion for school renovation, it is the time to collect allcommunity efforts to keep Marie Reed Community Center Services united and improved. It would be adevastating blow to Adams Morgan Community to let this chance pass.

    1/29/2015 12:49 PM

    3 More bikeshare stations 1/14/2015 11:19 PM

4 Is there a library in Adams Morgan? 1/14/2015 9:51 AM

5 Renovate Marie Reed, Upgrade equipment and facilities at Kalorama and Walter Pierce Parks, Bring moreprograms to Reed for afterschool- partner with DPR to give Reed students swim lessons; have local musicianshelp form a school band; etc. Have DPR offer a GOOD summer camp at Reed - especially the VERANO Spanishcamp since Reed is a Spanish bilingual school

    12/16/2014 4:54 PM

6 Local help from everyone in the area... 12/4/2014 2:59 AM

7 - more nightlighting, and more consistent schedule for nightlighting at Marie Reed soccer field. - improved DCPRyouth camp organization and leadership at Kalorama Park

    12/3/2014 10:19 AM

8 Not yet. Just moved Adams Morgan in August. 12/1/2014 3:50 PM

9 Offer more adult recreation classes at Marie Reed Center, similar to other centers in the city, for instance potery, painting, yoga, crafts, etc...

    11/30/2014 8:34 PM

10 I feel like it'd be nice to have a library closer than the Mount Pleasant and Cleveland Park branches. Also, theparks (Pierce Mill and the one up Columbia Road near Kalorama) are so-so. They could be nicer.

    11/30/2014 8:19 PM

11 Create a magnet program at the local elementary school that kids who are prepared to learn are able to learn. 11/30/2014 7:18 PM

12 Build a new Marie Reed School and Community Services Center that are net-zero buildings, creating throughrenewable energy sources, including ground-source (geothermal) heating and cooling, as much energy as theyconsume, and recycle the buildings' graywater to use for toilets and irrigation. Integrate information on healthyfood and a healthy planet into PreK-5 education in our two elementary schools. Provide 'wrap-around' socialservices to families of H.D. Cooke and Marie Reed students to help them support their schoolchildren's'education.

    11/30/2014 9:55 AM

13 We need a library! Update play equipment and play spaces at neighborhood playgrounds. Enforce dog-leashingrules so that I can enjoy the parks and play areas.

    11/24/2014 9:49 PM

15 Marie Reed needs to be rebuilt as a welcoming community amenity for people of all ages. Right now it's justshabby, and as a result has few in-boundary students.

    11/21/2014 3:59 PM

16 Please ask DC Water to replace the 125 year old main water line that runs under the south side of ColumbiaRoad, NW.

    11/21/2014 3:51 PM

17 Upgrade Kalorama Park. Local library. And indoor play spaces for kids - either DPR or commercial like thePlayseum in Eastern Market.

    11/20/2014 11:35 AM

18 Fix the park at 16th and Columbia. 11/18/2014 9:28 PM

19 I know a bit about all of the above except senior services ...whats around for them perhaps my ignorance. 11/17/2014 3:30 PM

  • 20 I have a Federal Government health plan so a community health service is not important to me. I'm sure it isimportant to others, but am answering this survey for my own personal needs. The survey does not give me theappropriate option to check, so I checked not satisfied when I mean it is not important to me. I would like to knowof a service to provide the care givers for my long term care policy when it will be needed.

    11/14/2014 1:48 PM

21 Better playgrounds It would be nice to have a local library but Cleveland Park and Columbia Heights aren't toofar.

    11/9/2014 9:40 PM

22 Add the missing community facilities (e.g., library, senior citizens center) to the modernized Marie Reed. 11/6/2014 11:20 AM

23 To partner further with private sector, especially real estate. 11/4/2014 11:28 AM

24 Question 2 should have the ability to answer "don't know". Have not used many of these services to know. 10/31/2014 3:07 PM

25 I really like the painted bike lanes. I in-line-skate to work regularly. I have noticed a dramatic improvement indriver tolerance of my being on the road since the city painted the bike lanes. I also think it is safer for me on theroad. The city should install more painted bike lanes. A bike lane on 21st street NW south of Florida Avenuewould be great.

    10/31/2014 12:30 PM

26 Improve parks, playgrounds, and fitness facilites so that people can enjoy the neighborhood without paying$200/month to go to one of the many gyms in the area. How about renovating that aweful park in lanier heights oncalvert street? A few more fitness stations here n there, maybe even an outdoor garden. Something that getspeople in touch with nature and each other.

    10/30/2014 8:54 PM

27 Make the Ward 1 Senior Service Centers fully wheelchair-accessible. Why does DC Office on Aging contract forinaccessible brownstones that people cannot use?

    10/30/2014 7:40 PM

28 Create an Adams Morgan Village (indpendant living) 10/30/2014 10:41 AM

29 Improve the Marie Reed center outdoor facilities for young children play. Offer more young child educational andplay activities on the weekends at Marie Reed and neighborhood parks (e.g., Kick Are For Kids youth soccer atPierce Park Sunday mornings).

    10/30/2014 10:33 AM

30 Use school spaces for community events during non school hours. More Programming at Parks 10/29/2014 9:42 PM

31 Add a library to the community 10/29/2014 9:27 AM

32 The lack of affordable commercial space in the area greatly reduces the availability of services. The city could domore to demand more mixed use in new developments and offer rent subsidies or grants to pay commercialrents.

    10/28/2014 11:34 PM

33 Building a local library in AdMo would be a wonderful anchor for our neighborhood. 10/26/2014 4:12 PM

34 I'd love to see the local non-profits and other service based organizations (and even schools) reach out to thecommunity more often, and tell us what they're up to.

    10/26/2014 2:15 PM

35 Would strongly recommend the updating of the Kalorama Playground in Kalorama Park, as well the the fullupdating of Marie Reed Center to make the aquatic facility (while smaller) to be the same caliber as the one atWilson HS run by the city. I would also advocate for a library to be dedicated in the Adams Morgan area that is acentral gathering point for many community activities as it is Tenley, Petworth, Georgetown, etc.

    10/22/2014 10:13 AM

36 Have senior programs at the DPW facilities. We used to have a senior exercise class at Girard Street, but themoney dried up.

    10/20/2014 12:10 PM

37 Open a public gym with work out equipment. Have the circulator come down Columbia Road then circle back up18th so everyone in the neighborhood can use it. Make the sidewalks safer for seniors by prohibiting bikes on thesidewalks (esp. where we have bike lanes.) Get police to enforce laws for bike riders - they are becoming acomplete menace.

    10/20/2014 7:29 AM

38 Get someone who knows something about parks. No one so far does. 10/19/2014 6:55 PM

39 Adams Morgan has been passed by even as many other neighborhoods received new or improved RecreationCenters while Kalorama Park has languished. This has happened while demand has increased for meetingspace, kid's activities, better space for indoor activities, etc. Marie Reed should have been redone to be rid of theoutdated open pan concept that is disliked and discredited in favor of a multi story school with a public library onthe corner and some storefront retail. Newer pool and other facilties are needed there were there is ample space-- and multi story would better match the surrounding 3 story row house image.

    10/15/2014 5:18 PM

  • 41 Perhaps a "Village" such as the ones in Dupont Circle and Glover Park to assist Seniors A facility at WalterPierce Park so that someone is on duty there and it could be available for meetings, etc. - and improvements inthis part. Kalorama seems to get money -- why not Pierce Park? In fact, I think Ward I should have a bigger pieceof the Parks and Rec Budget.

    10/14/2014 2:27 PM

42 Sorry I had to check not satisfied to what I did, but there was no option for not applicable, which would have beenmy answer.

    10/13/2014 7:28 AM

43 DPR does not deliver proper upkeep of Kalorama Park and Walter Pierce. There should be an improved andrevamped new Rec Center at Kalorama Park; also the children's playgrounds should be improved due to the highdemand. There is very high demand by all ages for Kalorama Park and it is not suitable for what is needed insuch a densely populated area.

    10/12/2014 3:49 PM

44 The schools are a top reason I'm not planning to buy real estate in DC. Would really appreciate a communitylibrary in the area as well, and care for the parks and green spaces

    10/11/2014 9:16 PM

45 Upgrade the playgrounds at Walter Pierce and Kalorama Parks to include sun shades and/or a spray park. 10/11/2014 5:55 PM

46 Add some new play equipment to Kalorama Park playground - but PLEASE DO NOT USE ARTIFICIAL TURF,POURED IN PLACE, RECYCLED TIRE RUBBER Woodchips please!

    10/10/2014 6:07 PM

47 I am fairly new to the neighborhood but would appreciate better means of distributing information on the availableservices and how to access them, as well as neighborhood projects in the area to assist with improvements. Theeffort to green Kalorama Park by removing impermeable pavement is good and should be replicated in parksthroughout the neighborhood.

    10/8/2014 7:44 PM

48 Yes,HCS: More for poor. Library:Have at least a satellite library with vol. reading to children and w computeraccess for poor. Non-Profits: Do more outreach w community. The new Potters House wants to get involved wthe community on every level and should be used. Talk to Tim Kumfer, transition manager about ideas. Look upweb site and call him. This is going to be a great resource for the ever more gentrified Adams Morgan.Parks/Rec: City to have more collaboration and cooperation with private volunteers. Senior Services: Work withthe new renovated Potters House to have groups for seniors, children, mothers with infants, toddlers for the toshare together and let seniors be in-place grand parents. Start organizing for an "Aging in Place" community likethse in Duont Circle, Cleveland Park, Capital Hill and Arlington, Va. I'll help work on it as a volunteer and I havethree other vol who want to work right now on it.

    10/3/2014 11:46 AM

49 Adams Morgan could use a mobile library in the immediate neighborhood 10/1/2014 1:41 PM

50 I'm invested in retaining our existent, small park areas. 9/29/2014 12:39 PM

51 Does Adams Morgan have a local library? I'm not aware of one. The closest one to me is Cleveland Park, but it'snot convenient enough so I do not go.

    9/27/2014 8:05 AM

52 Stop the rampant construction of unwanted and unneeded buildings like the hotel and the Adamo. There is nowhere for residents, guests and commercial vehicles to access parking for simple loading and unloading, wherethe hell do you expect people to park? In Southeast DC? Get rid of the bike lanes, they are well underutilized bycyclists and on Columbia Rd NW the old method of commercial vehicles being able to park in the center laneallowing east-west traffic flow without hindrance.

    9/26/2014 7:22 AM

53 Adams Morgan should have its own branch library which can also serve as a community space. We should striveto make our two elementary schools the best possible.

    9/24/2014 8:48 PM

54 1. Please ensure dog owners are using designated "dog park" areas when taking their dogs for recreation. 2.Distribute trash cans a bit more freely to see if walkers will use them to dispose of their personal trash (bottles, fast food bags, etc.) 3. There are more children than in the last 15 years here in the Kalorama Triangle, therefore,a "slow down" sign for motorists entering the area is worthwhile. 4. Put up a "speed bump" on 20th street toprevent further increase in use of it as a through street with the higher auto speeds a through street allows. It isright next to Kalorama Park and its basketball facilities. 5.

  • 55 Adams Morgan should become an Arts Districts help to revitalize economic development. Tax incentives encourage artists to live and work within these districts. In setting up these districts, that the development of an active artistic community, including artists in residence, in [these areas] would promote economic development, revitalization, tourism, employment opportunities, and encourage business development by providing alternative commercial enterprises. In short, the legislature was giving each of these communities the tools and incentive to develop a portion of its community by helping artists to live, work and contribute to community life, and for art galleries and exhibition spaces to help contribute to the economy of DC and Adams Morgan. Tax incentives: specifically, the legislation provides three different kinds of incentives; A. For artists who live and work within a specified district, any sale of work created within the district is exempt from state sales tax. B. For artists who live and work within a specified district, any income they receive from the sale of work they have created within the district is exempt from state personal income tax. C. For gallery spaces located within the boundaries of a specified district, the sale of original, one-of-a-kind works of art are exempt from state sales tax, whether or not they were created within the boundaries of the arts district.

    9/24/2014 12:07 PM

56 The chain-link fence around the soccer field in Walter Pierce Park may be protecting the grass, but it hasdestroyed the park as a pleasant, open, place to enjoy, or even walk through on the way from Lanier Heights tothe Woodley Park Metro. The fence has now created a narrow, resticted path through the park that I no longerfeel comfortable walking though after dark. This fence should be removed, or possible moved many feet fartherinto the field from the walking path.

    9/24/2014 11:10 AM

57 Would be great to get a library and also better grocery stores. Would like to see quality of restaurants improveand have fingers crossed that changes in liquor license rules will help. Would be great to encourage moreshopping.

    9/23/2014 2:23 PM

58 More outdoor, active, nature related time for early childhood education. More art, music, and sports time for allkids.

    9/22/2014 8:27 PM

59 there are some things in the neighborhood that I don't know much about. 9/20/2014 10:03 AM

60 The survey doesn't list services that are important to me. This survey reads like something appropriate for anursing home in the suburbs.

    9/19/2014 8:51 PM

61 Need more large community meeting facilities. 9/19/2014 3:19 PM

62 Maintain and increase the number of trees and green spaces, not just for children and families but for all peopleand wildlife, the environment. Limit 14th Streetstyle development to keep the neighborhood feel.

    9/19/2014 3:07 PM

63 Keep it the same. 9/18/2014 11:02 AM

64 Take the lock off the field @ pierce park 9/17/2014 8:51 PM

65 The playgrounds need to be renovated. 9/17/2014 7:52 PM

66 We need an Adams Morgan Seniors' "Village" established, if it hasn't already. 9/17/2014 11:55 AM

67 I would like to see the small places stay -- Idle Times -- rather than have big chain stores move in. 9/17/2014 7:59 AM

68 I would be interested in vacant store fronts making the space available for pop-up artists or a temporary home fornon-profits and community facilities.

    9/17/2014 7:28 AM

    69 I wish I knew 9/17/2014 6:43 AM

70 Is there any chance we could get rid of the fence at Walter Pierce park? It was apparently installed so that theycould charge for use of the facility, but does anybody use it now? I walk by most days and it used to be regularlyoccupied, but now I rarely see anyone, so unless people are using it mid-day weekdays, it is wasted space. Ihaven't even seen the drunk kickballers this summer. That means that even if making the city money is a higherpriority than having a nice park, it's still not successful, and some of the reasons for that cannot be changed.During the government shutdown, a number of kids soccer teams that usually play at Carter Barron played atWalter Pierce and I heard a lot of people say that they loved the high quality turf in the field and would be happyto have their kids play there regularly, but given the lack of parking it was unrealistic, and now they've never beenback. It's nice that the city has done all the work on the turf and I'm sure they couldn't keep it up without the fence, but I would much rather have crummy turf that people use than have beautiful turf and a big ugly fence. On asunny day, the dog park is full, the basketball court is full, the playground is full and it is a nice community feeling, and then there is that large empty space. So if there are any options to make a change to that, I would support it!

    9/16/2014 11:39 PM

71 Regular maintenance of tennis courts and other parks/fields. 9/16/2014 7:45 PM

74 Unify volunteers to coordinate with city services to address the most critical needs. 9/16/2014 3:40 PM

75 We don't have a library in Adams Morgan so it would be great to have a satellite library of some kind. Now thatthe new school boundaries are being implemented, it would be great to have more of a community presence atthe new IB schools to ensure they are providing quality options for the neighborhood's kids.

    9/16/2014 12:25 PM

76 Kalorama Park needs some improvements - the swing set in the big kids playground has been gone for over amonth.

78 keep improving the schools 9/16/2014 11:39 AM

79 Expand the number of parks, green spaces, and athletic areas. Make sure that all areas are clean, wellmaintained, and well policed! Small existing open spaces that are heavy on concrete should be planted with treesand flowers. Regarding a local library, repurpose and rehabilitate an existing space like the police and sun trustbuilding on the corner of Columbia and 18th.

    9/16/2014 10:51 AM

80 Supporting diverse cultural events that bring together other community member such as Ethiopian, Eritrean, localLatin American, Caribbean, African American...This includes mural projects, music (perhaps folk music of thesecultures) folk art events. One of the most aesthetically beautiful murals in the city (DC could use other types of artaside from strict realism) is the one on your website banner. . The Mexican and Central American, AfricanAmerican communities have a rich folk music tradition that is rarely heard in local communities. Put artists fromdifferent cultural backgrounds on your committee. Lets teach all not to fear difference.

81 refurbish Meridien Hill park A library would be great 9/15/2014 8:54 PM

82 Open the Marie Reed pool on the weekends for lap swimming. 9/15/2014 2:54 PM

83 Light the soccer field, and tennis and basketball courts - love having people around and playing 9/15/2014 1:45 PM

84 What happened to Walter Pierce Park? A few years ago, it was a popular field for soccer matches. Then, a fencewas built and now I never see the field being used. It would be nice if more DC libraries were open on weekends.

    9/15/2014 11:53 AM

85 Our parks need better maintenance - the lawns are scruffy, trees damaged, playgrounds tatty. In addition, peopleneed to know that they can't let their kids climb trees - it damages them.

    9/15/2014 7:23 AM

86 It would be neat if there were a tutoring center, so folks from the community could come and help kids with theirhomework.

87 Eliminate developers who are only interested in for profit services/products OR have them also createservices/products at little or no cost to counteract their other activities.

    9/14/2014 7:15 PM

88 I primarily use the swimming pool at Marie Reed - overall the facility is well maintained and staffed. 9/14/2014 6:38 PM

89 More inclusive public spaces 9/14/2014 2:15 PM

90 Remove the gate at Walter Pierce Park and open it up for all the public to use. A fenced off field is offensive in a"community" park. It basically says this ISN'T open to ALL of the community. The survey also needs to have anoption on "NA" or "Don't Know" since some people don't use certain services and can't judge them one way orthe other.

    9/14/2014 1:06 PM

91 Kalorama Park playgrounds could use a renovation. They're not bad, but in much worse shape than other nearbyparks and much more heavily used than Mitchell Park, for example.

    9/14/2014 11:31 AM

92 Upkeep/maintenance. Access to centralized info on what is available. 9/14/2014 10:01 AM

93 Bring a library to adams morgan. 9/11/2014 8:59 PM

94 We need a library in Adams Morgan, so an improvement would be the creation of one, maybe in the old PaylessShoes space on Columbia Rd.

    9/10/2014 9:31 AM

95 We do not seem to have Adams Morgan based doctors working in a medical group. MedStar is new to thecommunity but I don't know much about them. We go to Virginia for our medical care

    9/9/2014 10:11 AM

96 I would love access to a public space where residents could use small portable grills or installed public grills forpicnicking.

  • 97 Most of the services seemed directed at those in the bottom of the economic pyramid, but there are fewerservices that are directed at the neighborhood as a whole. We need more investment into parks, recreation, andopportunities that serve the whole community.

    9/6/2014 12:04 PM

98 For question #2, I don't really have experience with schools, senior services or healthcare services. Theimprovement of the Marie Reed soccer field has been great! I miss the food carts that used to be set up in thesmall park across from City Bikes. It seems like something could be done to make the space at the SW corner of18th and Colombia nicer.

    9/6/2014 11:36 AM

99 the Marie Reed center could use some clean up and general care. It is quite run down and often very dirty. Also, the workers there (especially indoor pool) just generally seem not to care.

    9/6/2014 10:36 AM

100 Close 18th to vehicular traffic from Columbia to Biltmore. Make it a walking mall. Would be visionary and create abig draw.

    9/5/2014 7:18 PM

101 More emphasis could be placed on park maintenance 9/5/2014 5:31 PM

102 Lots of vacant commercial buildings - can the city buy more to put to use to provide these services? 9/5/2014 4:11 PM

103 Replace Marie Reed with a modern building and upgraded pool facilities. 9/5/2014 4:00 PM

104 I wish the pool was outside and more accessible. The blacktop on the basketball courts could use some updating. 9/5/2014 3:43 PM

105 I would like to see the Kalorama Park and Walter Pierce playgrounds rehabbed. Other playgrounds in NW havebrand new equipment, while the AM playgrounds leave much to be desired. I'd love to see a public library in AM,and there's still work to do to improve Marie Reed.

    9/5/2014 2:58 PM

106 you need a not applicable choice. 9/5/2014 2:34 PM

107 Would be nice to have a library as part of a mixed use redevelopment of the Marie Reed Center, with marketrate, senior and affordable housing as well as shops and underground parking. There's no library anywhere closeby. Such a redevelopment would be great to rejuvenate the neighborhood.

    9/5/2014 10:40 AM

108 More pocket parks. More cleanup in public spaces. More infrastructure for children. Better hours for recreationservices. More libraries and community spaces.

    9/5/2014 10:12 AM

109 allow boot camps to operate in the city parks 9/5/2014 9:51 AM

110 Aggressive approach to raising school standards and quality of teaching. 9/5/2014 3:55 AM

111 Would love to see a library and renovate kalorama park :) 9/4/2014 9:58 PM

112 I think improving Columbia Road by Safeway would really help. The area needs more renovated restaurants andcute shops. I also think having a gym would be beneficial.

    9/4/2014 9:32 PM

    113 more parks!! 9/4/2014 7:54 PM

114 More funding and community participation and volunteering. 9/4/2014 7:22 PM

115 Until you remove MS 13 from the neighborhood, you'll never ever see progress. 9/4/2014 5:47 PM

116 Please remove the unnecessary fencing in the park. 9/4/2014 4:30 PM

117 establish a library in adams morgan that would also have community programs (eg storytime, visits by schoolchildren). The building could be used for non-profit and community programs as well as the usual libraryprograms (speakers, movies etc).

    9/4/2014 4:20 PM

118 The closest library is in Mt Pleasant. If there were one closer (even a storefront library in the old Old Jerusalemspot, for example) would be amazing.

    9/4/2014 4:20 PM

119 I wish there were a library in Adams Morgan proper! Mt. Pleasant and Cleveland Park are a tad far away if I justwant to drop off a book quickly.

    9/4/2014 3:54 PM

    120 Promote mix-use development, e.g. library+apartments in one building site. 9/4/2014 3:50 PM

121 Honestly these aren't remotely the services and facilities that are important to me. Much more relevant would bethings like higher quality grocery stores, 'fresh blood' with the restaurants--way too many stale, tired conceptsthat date the neighborhood and don't put out anything interesting, and more fun opportunities to be a community--jazz in a park, outdoor movie screenings, etc.

    9/4/2014 3:43 PM

122 When I say "not satisfied," it either means I don't like having the services in my neighborhood (i.e., the urgentcare center at 18th and Columbia) or don't use the existing services (i.e., senior services and pre-k programs.)

124 We love the park options that are available. We're very excited about free public pre-K and hope effort and time isspent making sure it is excellent.

    9/4/2014 3:02 PM

125 It would be great to have a library in the neighborhood. 9/4/2014 2:55 PM

126 Marie Reed should be renovated to reflect the prosperity of the city - the pool and facilities would provide a hugeservice to the neighborhood. Also, Marie Reed needs to catch up to Ross development wise. There are manyyoung families that would like to stay in the area and send their children to public school but can't because weare zoned for Marie Reed and its just not there yet

    9/4/2014 2:44 PM

127 Can not speak to after school programs, schools or senior services since those don't directly impact me. 9/4/2014 2:22 PM

128 Clean up the triangle park between columbia, 19th and south of Kalorama Rd Find a better way to use thecommunity space at 18th and Columbia than sleeping for the destitute. Stop selling airplane bottles, 40's andsingle beers at the grocery/liquor stores

    9/4/2014 2:20 PM

129 Honestly, I think advertising could help out a lot. Making sure people know what services are available. The morepeople that use them, the demand for funding and better facilities go up. We just need to be active and vocal.

    9/4/2014 1:59 PM

130 Park maintenance and clean-up. The local parks are very shabby and have become a place for the homeless toloiter.

    9/4/2014 1:32 PM

131 Overhaul of Marie Reed center to incorporate all of the above with some stunning green/urban architecture thatdc currently has very little of. A larger building set back from street. Park space facing 18th. Keeping new soccerfield that was installed. Incorporate non profit space. Day care. A large library/Hacker space with nice views of thecity and perhaps dc's first library with a cafe incorporated into the space would be nice. Also can adams morganpull of free neighborhood wifi?

    9/4/2014 1:25 PM

132 Having a public library branch that is in Adams Morgan or walking distance would be fantastic. 9/4/2014 1:20 PM

133 Schools are a complex issue...we want to send our daughter to DC schools but we also don't want her to bedisadvantaged

    9/4/2014 1:14 PM

134 parks and rec needs more community involvement and programs. The parks in Adams Morgan should have moreevents and programs for people of all ages.

    9/4/2014 1:13 PM

135 Would be nice to have a library 9/4/2014 1:00 PM

136 Taking better care of the parks in Adams Morgan. Having someone patrol the areas at night. 9/4/2014 1:00 PM

137 Parks and public spaces need to be cleaned more regularly. Citations should be issued for littering and loitering.Rowdy people, homeless people, and drunks should be moved along. Police should patrol regularly to cut backvandalism and thefts.

    9/4/2014 12:49 PM

138 Renovate the Marie Reed School and Playground 9/4/2014 12:40 PM

    139 More dog parks. 9/4/2014 12:38 PM

140 No, but you really should have had a n/a option for question #2. 9/4/2014 12:30 PM

141 Rebuild Marie Reed with a new pool that has proper drainage in locker rooms and other sanitary amenities, shower curtains and stalls, a bigger pool if possible; consider co-locating an Adams Morgan branch of the DClibrary at the new community center that is rebuilt. A nice center to look at for multi-purposes is Raymond, theyhave nice classroom for exercise and educational classes. Especially consider improving and expanding theswimming pool. I like the small parks we have in Adams Morgan and hope those will be maintained for futureuse.

    9/3/2014 4:32 PM

    142 . 9/3/2014 4:16 PM

143 More community programs at local Recreation Centers. They can be a paid service but at a minimal cost. 9/3/2014 12:56 PM

144 I would like to see more community events in the park, plazas and at the school in our community. Healthorganizations, entertainment, participatory creative arts, etc.

    9/3/2014 12:45 PM

145 I would love an outdoor pool closer to Adams Morgan. I'm looking forward to the Potter's House reopening as partof the "Nonprofit and Community Facilities" item.

  • Q7 Do you have any ideas about how toimprove our neighborhood economy?

    Answered: 190 Skipped: 345

    # Responses Date

    1 Ditto with #3. I need a "no opinion" option. 2/8/2015 8:02 PM

2 I would love to see a good old fashion bakery that sales milk and milk products like they still exist in NY, MxicoCity, Europe and most asian countries. I would love to have a good old fashion butcher. I would love to have amovie theater. I would love to stay in Adams Morgan to raise my kid. I am Mexican and my husband is Indian.

    1/29/2015 12:59 PM

3 A hardware store would be great as would more upscale restaurants. 1/14/2015 9:59 AM

    4 We need a hardware store! 12/13/2014 1:03 PM

5 We have enough bars and restaurants competing and it would be nice to see more variety with clothing storesand book shops.

    12/8/2014 1:08 PM

6 Yeah (Make laws that benefit a business for a time frame to help build a client base than increase the buildingand tax slowly over time to match the business in how much success it gets from the local economy.

    12/4/2014 3:02 AM

7 There is an overall lack of imagination in retail offerings(clothing, art galleries, shoes) with a few exceptions. TheSafeway is a depressing joke of a store to shop in and to me, shows a corporate lack of respect for ourcommunity and its patrons. A bakery would be a fine addition and would draw people to the neighborhood.

    11/30/2014 8:45 PM

8 Bring a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's in. Bring some decent (affordable but nicer end) clothing stores, etc. 11/30/2014 8:21 PM

9 Gourmet food store/deli would do well in the neighborhood. 11/30/2014 7:21 PM

10 Support efforts to put a cap on the number of bars and restaurants, encourage services like a real hardware storeand office supply.

    11/30/2014 9:59 AM

11 Put more resources into transportation. BID money should be spent on providing more parking and on bring backthe Woodley to U Street Shuttle. Eliminate Porch Fest. This could be the dumbest allocation of business taxmoney ever.

    11/21/2014 10:24 PM

12 More fast casual food options, even if chains, would be helpful. 11/21/2014 5:51 PM

13 New main water and sanitary sewer lines will encourage redevelopment of 100 year old buildings that line AdamsMorgan's commercial streets. Developers will buy the decayed structures and create new buildings that aresanitary, quiet and wired for the computer age. New clean spaces that can be easily maintained will attract viablefood, personal service and retail businesses that do not currently choose to sign ten year leases in AdamsMorgan/Kalorama Triangle.

    11/21/2014 3:56 PM

14 We should have Safeway build a larger grocery store 11/20/2014 3:50 PM

15 Allow for new liquor licenses to recruit new, better restaurants and bars similar to the offerings on 14th St. Also, promote mixed use developments instead of blocks consisting of all residential or all commercial.

    11/20/2014 12:47 PM

16 Yes! Get neighborhood amenities in and cheesy bars and low-rate restaurants (and hookah bars - so manyhookah bars!) out. Barracks Row is a great example of what 18th St. should be: lots of (mostly good)restaurants/bars, but also cute specialty stores (sweet lobby, pet stores, etc.) that draw people in for shopping.18th St. during the day is just a north/south thoroughfare - and it should be a destination, and at night, it's just aplace for residents to avoid. Toro Mata can't do it alone.

    11/20/2014 11:47 AM

17 More restaurants bars and retail along Columbia between 18th and 16th. 11/18/2014 9:31 PM

18 Less Banks. Redesign the ugly plaza where the farmer's market is held. Love the farmer's market, but the spaceis very ugly and influences the space and activities.

    11/18/2014 9:54 AM

    19 Diversify. 11/16/2014 10:25 PM

20 How about adding a car wash? I don't know of any and have no inclination to wash my car. Perhaps, it could be ayear round student run group washing cars at a local gas station with a regular schedule even if only weekends.

24 Create a tax incentive as has been done for 14th street. 11/4/2014 11:31 AM

    25 Not really - it's pretty awesome. 10/31/2014 1:07 PM

26 Less bars, and more actual restaurants and other types of business that dont attract 18-21 year olds. Look atdupont circle, its fantastic without being a magnet for liquor-fueled nonsense.

    10/30/2014 8:56 PM

27 Need for a GOOD bakery, non-bar eateries, expansion of Capital Bikeshare at Columbia and Adams Mill, resident friendly innovative businesses like TROHV in Takoma. Engage residents rather than late night-earlymorning bar patrons.

    10/30/2014 10:51 AM

28 Remove the moratorium on alcohol service licenses- this will allow new restaurants and bar to compete withexisting, poor quality bar/restaurant. Improve the pedestrian experience on Columbia Rd to attract higher qualityretail: Install median on Columbia Rd to slow traffic and make it easier to cross; close Euclid St in front theChristian Science Church and expand triangle park; redevelopment Knickerbocker Theater site to improve qualityof the outdoor space.

    10/30/2014 10:47 AM

29 There is really not much we can do w/out rent control. The corporate franchises move into our neighborhoodbecause only they can afford the rents.

    10/29/2014 7:51 PM

30 Better grocery store. A larger Yes in new Ontario building. I like dry cleaners nearby but only if like a Zips. Morehealthy fast food options, eg sweet green, cosi.

    10/29/2014 6:17 AM

31 Despite it's controversy, I think that proposed hotel complex near 18th and Columbia Road will bring agreater/steadier amount of people in what is still a residential neighborhood where a large percentage of theresidents leave during the day for other parts of the city. Non bar and restaurant business's don't have enoughdaytime traffic to operate at a profit. The liquor license moratoriums and legally sanctioned extortion's know as"Agreements" have hurt real restaurants expansion into the neighborhood. Yes, 14th Street, I'm holding you up asan example of success in this area.

    10/28/2014 11:53 PM

32 Repeal liquor license moratorium. 10/28/2014 9:40 PM

33 More variety i.e. fewer bars and more of anything else! 10/26/2014 4:15 PM

34 More boutique shops (like Violet, for example). 10/26/2014 2:17 PM

35 Make it possible for restaurants to survive as restaurants, not just bars 10/24/2014 9:41 PM

36 Open pharmacy closer to Biltmore where there used to be 2. Or, get one of the pharmacies to deliver in the area. 10/20/2014 7:32 AM

37 Housewares, toy stores, sporting goods, and furniture are difficult for the space configuration in Adams Morgan.People tend to buy on line, go to large stores, or they require much bigger spaces than we have available. samefor toy stores. We are losing Planet Pet; will leave a big hole. Turquoise jewelry was successful here, but coulddo much better elsewhere and they moved where there was more day-time foot traffic.

    10/15/2014 5:35 PM

38 more daytime foot traffic 10/14/2014 9:44 PM

39 A greater effort to get people to "shop local" might be helpful - as well as some attention to the stores and what ishappening on Columbia Road, between 18th and 16th. Hopefully, someone will be monitoring what kinds ofstores, etc. was included in the two new buildings AdMo and The Ontario.

    10/14/2014 2:32 PM

40 Get rid of some of these trashy bars! Replace them with higher end restaurants like Mintwood, etc. I live in thisneighborhood and rarely go out here because most places are overwhelmed with young, drunk people.

    10/13/2014 7:31 AM

41 Be realistic about what is possible. We purchase shoes and jewelry, even books and toys on line or in largestores. There is a full service Office Depot by the Hilton where a bank used to be. Adam Morgan does not have aMetro stop like 14th and U Street, which contributes to lack of day-time customers and there are no officebuildings which means not a lot of retail can be supported.

  • 42 Get rid of some of the trashy clubs along 18th street. Adams Morgan is really missing out on the small uniqueshops and cafes with real character that some other neighborhoods in DC have - it's really not the most desirableneighborhood anymore

    10/11/2014 9:20 PM

43 More day care facilities in the new condo buildings. 10/11/2014 6:11 PM

44 It would be nice to bring in more restaurants with quality food, and it would be even better if these were notextremely expensive. More businesses like Glen's Garden Market on Dupont or Little Red Fox up near ChevyChase Circle would also be good. A performing arts space would be good, particularly one that is usable by theneighborhood youth, but is probably not attainable. It would be nice to encourage fitness-oriented businesses thatare good neighborhood participants (Fleet Feet is a nice example). I assume that additional clothing or shoestores likely would help with overall foot traffic for the businesses that are already here, so it may be nice topromote them. There are already two hardware stores nearby -- the one at Woodley and the one on 17th Street,so it's not clear that an additional hardware store is necessary. The neighborhood also has plenty of dry cleanersand pharmacies within walking distance.

    10/8/2014 8:00 PM

45 Sponsor activities and times when local vendors can display their crafts, jewelry and food. Have more specialactivities and events for residents. More opportunities for young and old, ,condo and home and renters to interactand socialize on projects, park cleaning and planting and event days, and fireman appreciation days. Involvelocal residents. Use Peace Park for Latino Food sales on 1 or 2 days a week. Advertise our events and activitiesat the hotels and tell concierge and event planners. Start Adams Morgan History tours at Potters House. Havespecial food nights for residents. and restaurants. Have community evening walks in Adams morgan or on 18thor Columbia rd. mainly for residents.. Continue music events on weekends but coordinate some other food typeactivities also. Use Kalorama Rec Park for residents outreach and activities. Use our parks for our residents andour clubs first then the community. Coordinate with DC transportation and bus service tobringtourists back andforth-share the bus schedules.

    10/3/2014 12:05 PM

46 There is a distinction between whether the neighborhood has something, for example enough dry cleaners andwhether or not as a resident, one chooses to use them. Is the quality good? is the price good?

    10/3/2014 11:10 AM

47 Rents seem unaffordable for many businesses that do not sell liquor. 10/2/2014 4:36 PM

48 I think when a big space comes up, a group of biz men and women should rent it and share the cost and make aspace. Maybe a non profit can facilitate this.

    10/1/2014 1:45 PM

49 My goodness! This is a big question. But part of an important answer is that a neighborhood isn't just itseconomy. It's already got a better economy than most neighborhoods in the country. There are other issues herethat have equal and/or greater impact to this community than whether businesses can do well here.

    9/29/2014 12:44 PM

50 I would like to have a full-service gym nearby. The closest one is Mint, but because I live off Calvert St. on thenorth side of Adams Morgan it is not close enough for me to go regularly. It is also pretty expensive.

    9/27/2014 8:10 AM

51 NO MORE DANCE CLUBS AND DRUNKEN BARS!!!! sick of it!!!!!! 9/26/2014 11:12 PM

52 Expand the BID to include the machinate of side streets and green spaces. Make the city flush the water mainstwice a year to prevent breaks and flooding of basement establishments. Enforce the ABRA rules & regulations, make Pizza Mart use parchment paper or tin foil on weekends to reduce trash and litter from their drunkenweekend patrons. Stop repeatedly ripping up the streets and sidewalks for "improvements" that do not improvethings and cost business owners money.

    9/26/2014 7:26 AM

53 I think in order to fill some of the larger available spaces, you'll have to invite a local restaurant that's alreadyproven itself to open a satellite location, rather than focus on a brand new vendor. There is not a reliablehardware store.

    9/25/2014 5:10 PM

54 Fewer bars that appeal to 20-somethings and more restaurants/places that appeal to an older crowd or families.Locations of existing local chains such as & Pizza, Tortilla Coast or Shake Shack might be good because theyare proven restaurants that would probably be successful on 18th or Columbia.

    9/25/2014 4:33 PM

55 We should make our neighborhood a destination for a particular line of retail (housewares, furniture, etc.) whichmay increase day time traffic and carry over into the early evening.

  • 56 I suggest you look more closely at daytime retail businesses and services rather than concentrate so heavily onbars and restaurant -- and providing hard liquor with meals or at bars. I sense a pathetic lack of creativity when Isee expressed in newspapers a desperate needs for more liquor licenses, with the notion that this (hard liquor) isthe key to our community competing with U and H streets' very recent booms in popularity. Adams Morgan usedto have an auto parts store - no more. An antique store - no more. Perhaps a retailing consultant could suggestsome small, trendy clothing brands that might like a boutique on 18th street. U street is a lousy walking street, particularly for groups, but would a shuttle between Adams Morgan and the U Street Corridor or also includeDupont Circle for a Triangle of all three hots spots help out Adams Morgan (perhaps more than the others)?

    9/24/2014 2:11 PM

57 I have hopes that the new apartment/retail building going up in the old Ontario Theater lot will open up and bringnew businesses to the south side of Columbia Road. The abandoned Theater created a dead zone anddiscouraged foot traffic on the south side of C R. Looking forward to new life on the south-side blocks of Columbiabetween 16th and 18th.

    9/24/2014 11:14 AM

58 Figure out how to encourage more foot traffic. 9/23/2014 2:25 PM

59 Diversify. Enough with the boozy night trade (bars) 9/22/2014 8:30 PM

60 We should continue to transition old bars on 18th Street into better eateries. There are still only a few edibleplaces.

    9/21/2014 3:08 PM

61 I would like to see more specialty grocery/food stores such as bread bakeries, butchers, fishmongers, cheeseshops, etc.

    9/21/2014 12:12 PM

62 Diversify the businesses as much as possible, provide incentives for new businesses so there aren't as manyempty storefronts. I do appreciate the lack of chain stores, though.

    9/20/2014 8:25 PM

63 The only option for boarding pets in the area is Planet Pet. It's not a well run or good place for dogs. We alsoneed more restaurants that are reasonably priced and geared toward attracting local residents. We have plenty ofbars that no one who actually lives here frequents.

    9/20/2014 11:45 AM

64 I can't answer the "groceries and liquor stores" question as asked because they are 2 very different things. it'svery important to me that good grocery stores are in this neighborhood, and nice, important, but not veryimportant that liquor stores are in the neighborhood. the same with "restaurants and bars," restaurants veryimportant, bars important; "coffee shops, ice cream, fast food," coffee shops & ice cream very important, fast foodless important.

    9/20/2014 10:13 AM

65 Stop over-regulating the bars and restaurants. Stop allowing the Kalorama Citizens Association to exertexcessive influence.

    9/19/2014 8:55 PM

66 Lift the alcohol moratorium to allow more creative restaurants to come into the area. Build office space for day-time pedestrian traffic too. Create more shared office space to do the same also.

    9/19/2014 3:22 PM

67 We need fewer bars and loud entertainment. We need a card shop, a houseplant/plant store, a decent bookstorefor all generations. I'd like to see more quality retail like Toro Mata on 18th Street, similar to what we had brieflyin the early 90s. I patronize very few restaurants in AdMo. They either aren't good, or they're overpriced. Moredaytime traffic would be nice.

    9/19/2014 3:14 PM

68 More upscale restaurants and better landlords with interest in improving their property and more high risebuildings. More concentration of people.

    9/18/2014 11:06 AM

69 Introduce or add office space to increase daytime activity in the area... 9/18/2014 7:45 AM

70 It would be great to have more restaurants that are...restaurants (not just bars with some food). There does seemto be some movement in this direction recently with places such as Pop's Sea Bar, Roofer's Union, and JohnnyPistola's (sp?) although these all are focused on the bar crowd to some degree. It would also be great to havesome smaller nice independent options for clothes, jewelry, housewares, furniture, etc...

    9/17/2014 10:26 PM

71 Small business incubator space, shared office space, non-profit office space with the goal to increase daytimetraffic to improve the diversity of businesses. Most likely will need public funds to make it happen.

    9/17/2014 7:57 PM

72 Emphasize restaurants and reduce troublesome bars 9/17/2014 4:26 PM

73 Need a more diversified range of restaurants & bars - they are currently way too concentrated around youngdrinkers. Need to eliminate the voluntary agreements entirely, and let the market drive the uptake of newestablishments seeking liquor licenses (as has occurred successfully in other neighborhoods of the city over thelast 10 years). Need to implement zoning changes or variances and highly targeted economic developmentstrategies and incentives to expand the number of daytime businesses and foot traffic, which should help drive agreater diversity of businesses and create a more interesting neighborhood.

  • 74 We need to make sure that small business can flourish here. We do not want large chains taking over the realestate!

    9/17/2014 11:57 AM

75 Bring small businesses or attractive fast growing businesses to the neighborhood. Court company's likeLivingSocial, LathamNetworks, the Corporate Executive Board, etc. Many large organizations are consideringregional/neigborhood offices or co-working spaces. We should bring that business to Adams Morgan... OR start aco-working space.

    9/17/2014 7:33 AM

76 We desperately need more daytime, street level retail. Also, I would not combine grocery and liquor stores orcoffee shops and ice cream or restaurants and bars. You're associating different interest groups by combiningthose items.

    9/17/2014 6:46 AM

77 Cleaner streets and alleyways. 9/16/2014 5:35 PM

78 Lower commercial rents by placing time limits on vacant properties and penalties for deliberately unused spaces.Create a central marketing and advertising unit to promote businesses and services in Adams Morgan correctlyso they can compete with other booming neighborhoods. Promote day time and family-oriented shops andservices to balance out the "nightlife" perception of the neighborhood. Create an incentive system for residentsand visitors to shop locally. Enforce commercial real estate owner's responsibilities to keep streets clean andsafe.

    9/16/2014 3:46 PM

79 A garden shop and hardware store would be good. (We used to have a hardware store!) 9/16/2014 12:52 PM

80 Harris Teeter is great but their produce is not; I think this is an area where we can beef up the small farmer'smarket we have by the Suntrust bank. With respect to office supplies, the Kinko's is exorbitant in terms of cost. The restaurants / bars are overall great, but I've noticed a lot of turnover. Is there a way we can help some smallbusinesses thrive?

    9/16/2014 12:29 PM

81 See if you can't get a Trader Joe or Whole Foods to build in our neighborhood. The Safeway is a nightmare ofhigh prices and insufficient variety, The Harris Tweeter is too much of a pain if you live on the opposite side ofColumbia, and I personally don't trust that section of 17th after dark. We can use a larger hardware store. Dosomething interesting with the public space in front of the SunTrust Plaza. Make it interesting. Add some publicart. Provide funding to help businesses on 18th to upgrade the appearance of their storefronts.

    9/16/2014 11:49 AM

82 No more bars and no more restaurants! Grocery stores and pharmacies are nice, but we already have enough inthe neighborhood. The local economy can improving by identifying goods and services that currently have to bepurchased elsewhere. We would benefit from a non-Hollywood movie theater, a hardware store, a bookstore, clothing stores, banks, and one-off shops.

    9/16/2014 10:58 AM

83 Encourage inclusion and diversity. If you choose pure convenience than you will have chain stores and a moneyfocused community that is more like a strip mall.

    9/16/2014 8:46 AM

    84 We are over-supplied with bars. 9/15/2014 8:56 PM

85 Full service gym needed. More high quality restaurants, less bars, more retail. 9/15/2014 8:50 PM

86 More corner stores, grocery stores in the residential area north of Columbia Rd. 9/15/2014 3:34 PM

87 Fewer cell phone stores, maybe more coffee shops and/or restaurants. Fewer bars where people go to getdrunk. The addition of places along 18th street over the last few years like Smoke & Barrel and Roofer's Unionand the development of restaurants on Columbia west of 18th have been great. The stretch of Columbia between18th and 16th doesn't seem to be able to attract anything other than cell phone stores into empty spaces -- that'sunfortunate.

    9/15/2014 2:32 PM

88 Yes, get the hotel up so that we have more foot traffic during the day so that businesses other than bars canthrive. And then, let's get businesses catering to those of us who live here rather than the bridge and tunnel drunkcrowds. Happy to lift the moratorium on liquor licenses and hope that would help to attract nice restaurants like14th street now has.

    9/15/2014 2:32 PM

89 Your catagories above are a bit odd - books with toys? (happy with the former, don't care about the latter) flowersand gifts? (happy with the former, there's a complete lack of the latter).

    9/15/2014 1:47 PM

90 Adams Morgan needs a vegan restaurant, but I'm not sure how the ANC can make that happen. On a moregeneral level, why not make 18th Street a pedestrian-only space for one day every month so that people canenjoy the commercial and public space, thereby creating a sense of community? Other than this pedestrian-onlyidea, it seems that it would be difficult to increase the commercial activity without either (1) turning into ahomogenized chain store wasteland of places like Office Deport, Applebees, Dicks Sporting Goods, TGIFridays, etc.) or (2) making the cost of living even higher.

  • 91 I heard the neighborhood described recently as "growing up", and I thought that was not only accurate, but adirection I like. Moving away from tons of jumbo slice and night clubs catering to the college crowd and towardsunique restaurants and bars with special things to offer.

    9/15/2014 10:09 AM

    92 We need a trader joes 9/15/2014 8:03 AM

93 Stop being jerks about the liquor licenses. As many places as want them, should be able to have them. I movedto a party neighborhood on purpose. If people want quiet and kids, move to the burbs.

    9/15/2014 7:25 AM

94 We should try to keep all the ethnic grocery stores. I'm worried the rent will force them out of the neighborhood. 9/14/2014 8:29 PM

95 You can't. It's all private businesses. You can, however, improve our quality of life. 9/14/2014 8:27 PM

96 Moderately priced retail - eg CB2, West Elm, could fill storefronts 9/14/2014 7:39 PM

97 Create more incentives for small businesses to prosper. 9/14/2014 7:18 PM

98 Encourage mixed use development, and density to support a diverse mix of businesses. Abolish liquor licensemoratorium to encourage new and innovative restaurant offerings, more Mintwoods, Donburis, etc, lessShenanigans.

    9/14/2014 4:59 PM

99 Encourage more locally owned businesses, fewer chains, and keep the existing feel of the neighborhood. 9/14/2014 4:28 PM

100 More affordable food and shopping offerings 9/14/2014 2:17 PM

101 Try to get more family-oriented businesses in the area. I think the neighborhood relies too much on twenty-somethings coming into the area in the evenings and on weekends rather than concentrating on serving thecommunity that's here. 14th street is taking over as the entertainment area so we need to adjust our focus or thearea will die.

    9/14/2014 1:14 PM

102 Attract more day time traffic- more daytime businesses, shared work space or nonprofits. Changeimage/perception of evening, entertainment district.

    9/14/2014 10:10 AM

103 With the exception of a few, maybe only 5 new restaurants, all others are disgusting holes in the whole -- rundown, dirty, bad food -- I walk around and find hard to believe they are profitable business because they do notlook busy during the days (maybe they make money at night?). They reduce the value of the neighborhood ratherthan adding to it

    9/13/2014 11:09 PM

104 Focus on high end development centered around the new hotel at Euclid Rd & Ontario/Champlain. Allowsurrounding retail/restaurants to have liquor licenses. Bring in boutique shops and nice restaurants ontoColumbia Rd surrounding hotel. Key to this is bringing in a Whole Foods (nation's fastest growing retailer) to thecurrent Safeway location.

    9/11/2014 12:00 AM

105 The local economy should focus on the middle class. Adams Morgan's current economy is polarized betweencatering to low income residents and high income residents. We also have too many bars and restaurants andtoo few retail options.

    9/10/2014 11:32 PM

106 Attract brand name stores to locate here. Too many mom and pop stores who don't have the financial ability tokeep up

    9/9/2014 10:14 AM

107 There are only two grocery options, neither of which is ideal. 1) Safeway on Columbia has very limited options, and almost no good produce. It is definitely one of the worst grocery stores I've been to. 2) Harris Teeter is on theother end of the spectrum, it has a lot of produce and general food options, but it is very expensive.

    9/8/2014 2:02 PM

108 Get rid of the gross bars on 18th and the drinking culture! This could be a nice area, but the dives devoted tocheap drinks and the concomitant Big Slice late-nite cheap eats kinda ruin it as a place for grown-ups (let alonefamilies) to live.

    9/8/2014 10:55 AM

109 I suspect commercial rent is too high, making it difficult for businesses that don't specialize in alcohol to profit. Ido want to say that I am not opposed to drinking, I just feel like we have that covered already.

    9/8/2014 9:50 AM

110 Diversify the daytime commercial offerings. A neighborhood needs more than bars for it to thrive. 9/7/2014 4:32 PM

111 Demand is outstripping supply for coffee shops, we could certainly use more as the existing ones tend to bepacked. I live at the intersection of 19, t, and FL and it's a pretty far walk to most grocery stores other than Glen's,which isn't affordable (it was better when Glen's was a the Secret Safeway)

    9/7/2014 12:34 PM

112 Columbia business district is dingy and unwelcoming. Perhaps new sidewalk, more trees. Definitely the stretchbetween 18 and 16 street needs to be repaved.

  • 113 The economy of the neighborhood seems to be providing binge drinking establishments to the bridge and tunnelcrowd from Maryland and Virginia. There are fewer and fewer establishments (like Tryst, the Diner) that areplaces for those who live here, pay taxes here, and enjoy the neighborhood. I chose to spend my moneyelsewhere on Thursday - Saturday evenings because the neighborhood is not mine. We need more places liketryst, more bookstores, more restaurants which aren't a front to under age interns and people who are looking toget intoxicated, and more clothing stores. Grocery stories and liquor stories are very different institutions. Iwouldn't mind more of the former, and less of the latter. Similarly, restaurants and bars are different institutions. We have more than enough bars, but not enough restaurants. Our existing restaurants seem to be fronts for barswith a few exceptions like the diner, perry's, tryst, cashons. I would also note that coffee shops build a verydifferent community than fast food restaurants. They shouldn't be combined. I want more cafes but want less fastfood chains.

    9/6/2014 12:11 PM

114 I wish there weren't so many empty storefronts in Adams Morgan. Not sure why or how to improve that. I like thatAdams Morgan is an economically diverse neighborhood.

    9/6/2014 11:41 AM

115 do away with the ridiculous liquor license restrictions on 18th street. the business on that road are often not goodand overpriced because they rely too heavily on liquour sales for partiers.

    9/6/2014 10:38 AM

116 As I mentioned, close the strip from Columbia Road to Biltmore or Wyoming. Would be an opportunity to open upmiddle of the street kiosks, daytime music and performers and draw people to shops and eateries during the day. This is the enduring lost economic activity in the neighborhood. Right now it's mostly delivery trucks!!

    9/5/2014 7:23 PM

117 There needs to be a more diverse selection of commerce. For example there are not many quality mid rangerestaurants for a quick meal or take out. The options are either fast food, places that turn into dive bars after darkor very high end. It would be nice if there were more delicatessens. Also, a basic hardware and paper productsstore would be nice additions to the community.

    9/5/2014 5:34 PM

118 Repeal the liquor license moratorium, encourage more new restaurants and bars to come into the neighborhood.Prioritize 18th st vacant commercial spaces to be put to use.

    9/5/2014 4:13 PM

119 Residents (and PITA neighborhood associations, like Kalorama Citizens Association) need to be more welcomingto restauranteurs who want to open new upscale eateries. Adams Morgan is lucky as hell that Mintwood decidedto open in AM, but we've lost out on other upscale opportunities to other neighborhoods in the city. Get rid ofliquor license moratorium. Get rid of the AMBPA and AM Main Street.

120 i do love the restaurants and bars, but it feels like the moratorium has hurt rather than helped. there's been anempty storefront on columbia between mintwood/perrys and the newly opened pop's seabar for years. the sign inthe window says it comes with a liqur license. this leads me to believe that the landowner is essentially hoardinga liquor license because they are in scarce demand, and trying to charge the kind of rent that one can only makeup in alcohol sales. but no one has taken them up on it. i wonder what other restaurant could have openedelsewhere in the neighborhood if no one was squatting on this unused license. i wonder what other kind of storemight have opened up on that block - which already has 5 restaurants and a pool hall - if the landowner weren'ttrying to force it to be the kind of business that needs and can pay for a liquor license. the moratorium seems tobe leaving more storefronts empty than filling them.

    9/5/2014 4:08 PM

121 Add more parking! Somehow.... 9/5/2014 4:01 PM

122 Adams Morgan needs a good burger place. Like where is our Good Stuff Eatery? A new goto dive bar and dancespot. A bowling alley would be really cool too. Also an independent art house movie theater. I would also like toclose off 18th St to car traffic on the weekends. And a bigger Saturday farmer's market.

    9/5/2014 3:49 PM

123 I would like to see less nightclubs and bars and more sit down restaurants (both family friendly and high end). Iwould like to see more local coffee shops, ice cream parlors, bookstores, and toy stores. We could also use agood hardware store. Many of the businesses on 18th street cater to tourists or people looking for drugparaphenalia and don't have much value for residents.

    9/5/2014 3:01 PM

124 you need a not applicable choice. 9/5/2014 2:36 PM

    125 Close the nightclubs 9/5/2014 1:39 PM

126 More restaurants of all price ranges with quality food - a mix of quick places like chipotle and sit downrestaurants. A theater like DC improve or Wholly Mammoth would be amazing. An ace hardware would be a plustoo.

    9/5/2014 1:34 PM

127 More locally owned coffeeshops! 9/5/2014 10:49 AM

128 Incentives to have offices above all the restaurants and shops of 18th and Columbia Roads, like technologystartups

130 Need to have retail shops or restaurants that attract people during the day, not just at night or for happy hour. 9/5/2014 9:48 AM

131 More restaurants, fewer bars! 9/5/2014 3:57 AM

132 Am interested in more shopping options- boutiques, home goods, etc. See wicker park in Chicago 9/4/2014 10:00 PM

133 Look at 14th street and how it evolved; improve the restaurants, get a good gym, and some cute shops. 9/4/2014 9:37 PM

134 Ditch the stupid liquor license moratorium. Magically attract a decent hardware store to the neighborhood. 9/4/2014 8:13 PM

135 Get rid of the liquor license moratorium so new and better nightlife options can replace the existing ones. A goodhardware store would be very useful for the neighborhood; the one on the 1700 block of Columbia Rd leavesmuch to be desired.

    9/4/2014 8:12 PM

136 a greater diversity of businesses. Developing Columbia Road. 9/4/2014 8:05 PM

137 fewer banks, fast food chains, etc; more independently owned restaurants, bars and stores; also we really needmore lunch places during the day

    9/4/2014 7:57 PM

138 Again, until MS 13 is removed from the neighborhood (primarily the 1700 block of Columbia Rd) this will be aneighborhood that has already seen its best days.

    9/4/2014 5:49 PM

139 Grocery and Liquor stores are vastly different as are Restaurants and Bars. Grouping these into one in the samething may get very misleading results.

    9/4/2014 5:24 PM

140 I think if we had less crime and drunk people walking around late at night over the weekend, the neighborhoodwill be much better and also with a better reputation. Also, the fast food option are very limited to pizza or falafel. There are no "better for you" fast food options like they have in Dupont (Sweet Green, Cava Mezze, ShopHouse, etc.). Also, there are only two coffee shops (Tryst and Pleasant Pops). There is an Ace Store and PetStores in Woodley Park or Dupont so I don't think we need more in ADMO.

    9/4/2014 5:04 PM

141 Encourage new bars and restaurants that cater to a higher-end clientele (a transition process that has alreadybegun). The area would benefit from more establishments that are open during the day (fast food, coffee, etc.).The area would benefit from more retail, and there is a lot of potential for turnover/improvement on Columbia Rdbetween 16th St and 18th St.

    9/4/2014 4:59 PM

142 Encourage restaurants rather than bars to do business. Create a business improvement district that will poolfunds necessary to improve vacant business fronts and cite properties that are not held to certain aestheticstandards.

    9/4/2014 4:38 PM

143 Keep AdMo funky and gritty. Stop with only fine dining restaurants - we need more fast casual restaurants. 9/4/2014 4:33 PM

144 I get everything I need in Dupont circle. Would like to have a similar level of goods and services on columbia roadgoing up to mt pleasant

    9/4/2014 4:26 PM

145 It would be nice to see some healthier options in terms food 9/4/2014 4:19 PM

146 A local hardware store would be wonderful. I have also been very encouraged by the recent developments on18th Street with the establishment of nicer restaurants and fewer loud clubs.

    9/4/2014 3:57 PM

147 Offer free short term parking spaces, increase bicycle parking and lanes, offer bus shuttles like the one that usedto exist between U Street to Woodley Park and only cost 25 cents/ride!

    9/4/2014 3:53 PM

148 Need new stores and restaurants. Everything is very stale and dated. 9/4/2014 3:45 PM

149 Encourage new business to open in unoccupied storefronts on Columbia Road (both east and west of 18thStreet).

    9/4/2014 3:44 PM

150 Less restrictions on liquor licenses so quality establishments can compete with old, unsatisfactory incumbents. Also, finish the hotel. We need less NIMBYism. We need to move Adams Morgan to be a destination more akin toLogan Circle in its restaurant and nightlife offerings.

    9/4/2014 3:30 PM

151 Movie theaters and bookstores. 9/4/2014 3:24 PM

152 Encourage real businesses to open in the area instead of businesses where you don't know what's actuallyhappening on the inside. Along Columbia Road across from the Safeway there are only a few businesses thatseem safe, reliable, and legit. All the others have various clothing, luggage, and other goods hanging off the storefront. I feel as though these businesses are not contributing to the local economy and are more of an eyesore.

  • 153 All these business categories are great at present but will be greater still when more businesses move in to theempty storefronts on Columbia Road

    9/4/2014 3:16 PM

154 It would be nice to have fewer fast food restaurants and bars. The small local businesses (e.g., the flower shopon 18th, La Fourchette, Glen's Garden Market) are what really make this neighborhood a quality one and onewith character. We need more of that!

    9/4/2014 3:06 PM

155 Improve offerings for residents -- things like grocery store, pharmacy, hardware store, etc. Existing restaurantscould be higher quality. Don't need more restaurants or bars-- there are plenty of them!

    9/4/2014 3:05 PM

156 I would LOVE to see a salad place like sweetgreen move into the 18th street area. There are so many times Iwant a giant salad on the weekend but there is nowhere to get one.

    9/4/2014 2:59 PM

157 daytime economic stimulation: commercial real estate, hotels... also relax the liquor license moratorium whichstifles business

    9/4/2014 2:56 PM

158 I believe that Adams Morgan needs to be rebranded in a way. I think that 18th st. should be cleaned up, crimewise and it should be walkable and safe at all times of the day (including late at night). We should encouragecompetitive rent prices (not sure how you do that) so that small businesses can come in and grow. Restaurantsoperating as nightclubs and bars should be closely monitored because as long as those are operating, it will bedifficult for 18th st. to be a respectable place for people to spend their time and nearly impossibly for youngfamilies to stay in the area due to safety concerns.

    9/4/2014 2:47 PM

159 Fewer chains/franchises and more homegrown/pop-up/artisanal small businesses. Would like to see anindependent coffee shop (besides Pleasant Pops, which is great, but is on the border of Adams Morgan) andmore health-conscious, fast casual dining options.

    9/4/2014 2:46 PM

160 Yes -- continue to allow for more businesses to arrive. The new hotel will be a great source of revenue. None ofthe important local services will be available without a sufficient tax base.

    9/4/2014 2:37 PM

161 allow more permits for tavern type restaurant and bars 9/4/2014 2:31 PM

162 We need something to replace the lost hardware store at 18th and Wyoming, would be very nice to have a doggydaycare/petstore like the two at 18th and swann, but on the north side of columbia and 18th. A furniture store thatis not the obscenely over priced one for the neighborhood along columbia rd west of 18th, so it's actually openand has foot traffic.

    9/4/2014 2:27 PM

163 Reduce the number of cheap bars in favor of more grown-up restaurants. 9/4/2014 2:26 PM

164 we need fewer t-mobiles/cricket cell phone stores 9/4/2014 2:26 PM

165 I think that Adams Morgan is moving in a really great direction. I think it's important to keep some of the charm ofthe neighborhood buildings and maybe just spruce them up with a paint job or face lift. Bringing in new, freshbusinesses may help get rid of some of the people that come in on the weekends to hang out on the streets andmingle in front of establishments.

    9/4/2014 2:25 PM

166 I would love to see an organic market with better produce and options than Yes, a real farmers market, marketsand entertainment in the big empty spaces along the intersection at 18th and Columbia and near City Bikes (whathappened to the Hispanic market?!) We could use some higher quality salons. On 18th Street, I would like to seemore restaurants with character (not just another bar catering to weekend crowds) and shops and services thataren't bars. We definitely need a hardware store. Adams Morgan Hardware closed a few years ago, and anyway,it was not sufficient.

    9/4/2014 2:21 PM

167 more coffee shops, more park space, more "quick eats", 9/4/2014 2:13 PM

168 Encourage more growth. This should be a neighborhood that encourages families and provides services for themto use. Think about the Tenlytown neighborhood, with dance and music schools, children friendly restaurants, parks, etc. I would love to see more 3 bedroom condos, maybe splitting row houses into 2 units, not 3 or 4. I'dlove to see an awesome art and crafts/toy shop.

    9/4/2014 2:04 PM

169 There should be a focus on having businesses that serve residents' basic needs in their day-to-day lives, likegrocery stores and pharmacies, along with restaurants and entertainment that draw people from across the metroarea. A focus on businesses that cater to the pre-11 pm crowd will draw more people to the area and increasespending in the neighborhood. Given its strengths, there is no reason for the neighborhood to miss out on thegains experienced along U St, 14th St, and other parts of the city.

    173 - Lift the liquor moratorium 9/4/2014 1:26 PM

174 I think bars vs restaurants should be differentiated as they are very different concepts in Adams Morgan. We'veseen some great restaurant ideas pop-up: Sakuramen, Donburi, Black Squirrel, and we'd like to see more in thefuture. We do nopt need more dirty bars or another NY Diva popping-up. Use discretion with the liquor licensesand favor restaurants that happen to serve alcohol, not bars that happen to serve food. I don't know how thosehookah and smoke shops stay open, but I sincerely hope they are all driven out. I'd love to see a neighborhoodpharmacy.

    9/4/2014 1:21 PM

175 Less nightclubs - more restaurants and stores 9/4/2014 1:18 PM

176 Daytime retail. More police presence Thurs - Sun in order to encourage more visitors (the neighborhood has abad reputation and there are far more places to visit in DC these days) MORE EVENTS/FESTIVALS

    9/4/2014 1:17 PM

177 I think focusing on providing quality restaurants and bars would immediately help transform the neighborhood. Somany young professionals have been flocking to the neighborhood due to the relatively low rent, I think it'simportant to capitalize on that in order to see future growth. The nightclubs in the area have always had a badreputation and their patrons are mostly people from out of the area - why not focus on providing venues that willattract people who live in the area which in itself would help reduce the amount of crime. A venue similar to HStreet Country Club would provide a more quality bar/entertainment aspect to the young professionals. Alsobiergartens have been a huge hit - especially when the weather is nice - it would be great to have one in the areawith either a back patio or rooftop.

    9/4/2014 1:08 PM

    178 focus on more day-friendly stores; 9/4/2014 1:03 PM

179 Every effort should be made to retain and grow locally owned small businesses. At the same time, smallbusinesses that encourage loitering and drunkeness should be closed.

    9/4/2014 12:51 PM

180 Improve the grocery stores in place - both the Safeway and the nearby Giant in Columbia Heights are poorlymanaged and frankly pretty gross to spend time in.

    9/4/2014 12:40 PM

181 I would like a more diverse 14th street assortment of restaurants, bars (day and night time), clothing, businesses, shops, etc. Not just a night-time drinkfest.

    9/4/2014 12:37 PM

182 We need more middle cost range restaurants, or even less expensive ones, that serve healthy food. If you look atour restaurants now, the ones that serve healthy food are really high end - all the rest are either repetitive of eachother and eventually cannibalize each other's business, or they serve really unhealthy food choices of starch andfat (noodle restaurants, pizza, falafel, empanadas, so many calories and not much fresh ingredients without thestarch and fat). The issue of restaurants mimicking each other then driving each other out of business includepizza places, falafel and schwarma places, now BBQ places. How about if we get a few more places that serve anice variety and healthy mix of food like Tryst does? Or more vegetarian options high in protein like Protein Bar orSweet Green? (even though they are chains, their food is good, they are clean and run well). I hate torecommend chains though, because they will be the downfall of our neighborhood if we allow too many in.

    9/3/2014 4:39 PM

    183 . 9/3/2014 4:17 PM

184 Since there have been some violent crimes in the neighborhood, perhaps more upscale restaurants, shops, andclubs would help prevent that somewhat.

    9/3/2014 1:01 PM

185 It would be great to have a more evolved variety of restaurants (seems to be just beginning to happen), more livearts, music, and street performers/artists - like they do in sections of NYC. These things make a neighborhoodmo
