Hoover Dam

HistoryNative Americans, the Paiute tribe, were the first people to live in the area. In 1829, a Mexican scout named it “Las Vegas” (Spanish for the meadows) because wild grasses watered by desert springs made it look like a meadow. In 1854 a church group, the Mormons, built farms there and in 1864 the US army built a fort. The city was founded in 1905 but it was just a small settlement where people often stopped over on their way to Las Angeles.

In 1931 the Hoover Dam was built nearby. Nevada had legalised casinos and downtown Las Vegas became an entertainment area for dam workers. Gambling was banned in nearby California so people began travelling to Las Vegas for vacations, recreation and entertainment. Business was so successful that many luxurious resorts were built. Las Vegas is still regarded as the entertainment capital of the world.

Changes to the EnvironmentThe natural springs which early settlers used for water have since dried up. Underground water is still used but must be brought up to the surface from wells. Most of the water supply comes from the Colorado River. It is pumped down a pipeline. Water is important to Las Vegas. People are encouraged to conserve water by converting their gardens from lawns to desert type landscapes.Source: Wikipedia
