    APPLICATION:

INSTALLATION SUMMARY:• Newly placed concrete: joint interface must be dry and

clean (free of dirt, coatings, rust, grease, oil, and other contaminants), sound, and durable. New concrete must be cured (14 day minimum).

    • Aged concrete: loose, contaminated, weak, spalled, deteriorated and/or delaminated concrete must be removed to sound concrete and repaired prior to placement.

    • Steel: steel substrates should be sound, steel surfaces must be abrasive blasted SP-10 near white metal, immediately prior to installation.

    • The joint opening must be abrasive blasted to remove all latencies and contaminants which may cause bonding problems. The joint opening should be blown clean using compressed air (>90psi).

    • A non-gassing closed-cell expanded polyethylene foam rod, approximately 25% larger in diameter than the joint gap is positioned in the joint opening on the larger seal so not to allow the seal to potentially fall thru the opening during installation.

    • Clean all excess material from the edges of the joint opening as soon as possible. DO NOT allow the silicone to cure before

    removing it.

    • Wabo®Sil will be ready to accept traffic generally within 30 minutes after installation.

    • Seal Positioning: A closed cell foam backer rod or foam board is recommended for seal depth positioning if concrete step is not present. Follow manufacturer’s noted Groove Depth “B” on seal chart.

    • Preformed Silicone Preparation: Unroll seal and with a clean rag wipe the serrated sidewall and rounded seal lugs with denatured alcohol (supplied by others) to ensure a clean surface for bonding.

    • Preformed Silicone Seal Placement: Apply a continuous 3/8” to ½” bead of Wabo®Sil Adhesive to both sides of the joint interface.

    • Fold seal and insert into the joint. Release seal and ensure contact with joint interfaces and the adhesive.

    • Apply a second bead of adhesive along each side of seal and fill to the top of the serrations. DO NOT apply adhesive above the serrated areas. Tool Wabo®Sil Adhesive on both sides to ensure the adhesive makes full contact with the seal and substrate.

FOR BEST RESULTS:• Repair any spalls, voids, or structural cracking at the joint

interface.• DO NOT allow any of the components to freeze prior to

installation. Store all components out of direct sunlight in a clean, dry location between 50˚F (10˚C) and 90˚F (32˚C). DO NOT store in high humidity.

    • Shelf life of chemical components is approximately 12 months.

    • DO NOT install when surface or substrate temperature is

less than 40˚F (4˚C)• Periodically inspect the applied material and repair

localized areas as needed. Consult a Watson Bowman Acme representative for additional information.

    “Seal Splice, Curb & Directional Change P r o c e d u r e s ” document found in your launch package.

Using the pneumatic adhesive applicator, pull the trigger. A cushion of compressed air will build up inside the applicator to initiate the flow of the Wabo®Sil Adhesive. Upon release of the trigger, adhesive

flow will cease. Controlling the adhesive flow rate is achieved with the integral pressure regulator fitted to the trigger handle. To increase flow, turn knob clockwise, to decrease the flow, turn the knob counter-clockwise.CAUTION: the line pressure connected to the applicator should not exceed 145 psi (1 MPa). Always disconnect the air line prior to dismantling the applicator. To ensure trouble free operation of the applicator, it should be wiped clean of all sealant residues after use with denatured alcohol.

Joint inferences should be free from dirt and debris. Sandblasting will remove any residue that may be present. After sandblasting, the joint should be blown clean using an air compressor.

Inspect joints for proper depth as detailed in theplans. A closed-cell, expanded polyethylene foam backer rod is recommended for seal depth positioning when a concrete ledge or steel stopper bar is not

present. The backer rod stablizes the seal and acts as a seat to prevent the preformed silicone seal from migrating below the joint depth requirement during installation. Proper groove depth placement is as follows:

The size of the backer rod should be approximately 20-25% greater than the joint opening to be sealed.

    MinimumGrooveDepthPlacement

Unroll the Wabo®SPS preformed silicone seal to proper length adjacent to joint opening. With a clean rag, wipe the serrated sidewalls and rounded seal lugs of the silicone seal with denatured alcohol (by

others). This is to ensure a good clean surface for bonding of the adhesive.

    3

    4

Recommended application temperature 40°F (5°C) and rising. Contractor shall apply to both sides of the joint interface a continuous 3/8” to ½” (10mm to 12.5 mm) bead of Wabo®Sil Adhesive at the

recommended groove depth on either the backer rod or concrete/steel ledges.

the seal and substrate. The Wabo®SPS joint system will generally be ready to accept traffic within one hour after installation.

The following installation procedure provides a basic guideline for proper placement of the expansion joint sys-tem described above. This procedure should be used in conjunction with approved shop drawings (if required), contract plans, project specification, and recommendations by the manu-facturer. To ensure proper installation and performance of the expansion joint system, the following steps shall be completed by contractors with staff having appropriate skills to execute stated installation requirements.

    rev. 9.2014

Cut preformed silicone seal material with a non serrated blade, creating a fresh cut on both sides. A miter box is recommended to maintain a straight and accurate cut. A lubricating compound (such as denatured alcohol) could be used to cut seal.

    1

Both ends of the preformed silicone seal shall be cleaned using a solvent brush and PP Primer (WBA part #2717) to cut the surface. Apply the Aron Alpha 241F (WBA part #2716) to the cut surface of the preformed silicone seal one half at a time and compress pieces together, holding in place for 30

seconds under firm pressure. It is recommended to let spliced section rest untouched for approximately 3 (three) minutes prior to flexing into the joint opening, ensuring full cure of splice adhesive.

    2

    Seal Splice:

    Curb and Directional Changes:

Steps 1-3: Lay out markings for upturn or down turn about 2 – 3 inches from end of supplied seal.

Using a sharp knife, remove only the flap, following along the marks made on the seal. At this point, leave the center intact.

    4

Fold the seal in half. Holding tightly, continue to cut through the center. Cut both ends to be spliced.

    5

Using PP Primer S, clean both surfaces to be bonded, and allow to dry.

    6

Starting at edge, apply the Aron Alpha 241 to one side of the seal only.

    7

Align edges and press firmly together for 30 seconds.Continue gluing along edge until reaching the center of the seal. DO NOT GLUE CENTER. Repeat along other edge leaving center unglued.

    8

Once both sides are glued, align center, apply glue and allow to dry. Check for gaps and fix if necessary.

Using Wabo®Sil Adhesive, place a bead 1/2” over splice on front and back of seal to ensure seamless bond.
