TOGETHER FOR A SUSTAINABLE MOROCCO

This is a wide-reaching and complex question that often gives rise to radical opinions. It compels us to be particularlyattentive and innovative when it comes to protecting the environment. I say “we” because it is an issue that concernsus all: competitors, organizers, staff, partners, journalists, service providers…

Since its creation, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc has emphasized the protection of the environment: to win,competitors need to drive the shortest possible distance.

That is why, 20 years ago, I decided to adopt an environmental approach that culminated in ISO 14001 certification in2010. Today we are the only event in the world to have obtained this certification, a fact of which we are justifiableproud.

Numerous measures have been implemented to improve and reduce, as much as possible, our environmental footprinton Morocco and on the planet. Car manufacturers, aware of the challenges of sustainable development, are alsoworking in this direction and many advances are being made to make cars more “green”.

Each year, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc continues to evolve in ways that reflect its key concern: respect forthe environment.

INTRODUCTION

Since its creation, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc has been developing a new vision for

motorsport: no speed, no GPS just old-school navigation: a return to the roots of Adventure.

The goal is to drive as little as possible. Competitors must reach a series of checkpoints while

driving the shortest possible distance. Since the event’s creation, we have been laying the

foundation for the principle of eco-driving.

In 2010, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc became the first rally in the world to obtain

international environmental management certification (ISO 14001). In its constant pursuit of quality,

the environment has always been a key area of focus. Maïenga wishes to ground the values it has

always upheld: quality, respect for Morocco and its people, participant safety, a human conscience

combined with an environmental and social responsibility.

In line with this philosophy, Maïenga has applied its expertise and savoir-faire to its three other

events: the Gazelles and Men Rally, the Cap Fémina Aventure and the Bab El Raid.

In 2018, Maïenga decided to extend its ISO : 14001 certification to all of its events: the Cap Fémina

Aventure, the Bab El Raid and the Gazelles and Men Rally.

Maïenga is wishes to demonstrate its desire to reduce its environmental impact and become a model for others to follow.

Maïenga does everything in its power to respect all French and Moroccan environmental laws and regulations in effect.

Every year, the agency carefully studies any new environmental regulations with which it must comply.

A RECOGNIZED APPROACH

• The Rallye and the Moroccan Ministry for the Environment signed a convention to inform

and raise awareness about environmental issues and sustainable development,

• All Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc participants (Gazelles, organizers, partners…) signed

an “Appeal for the Climate”,

• The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc took part in COP21 and COP 22,

• Maïenga was awarded the Moroccan “Tourism and Climate Initiatives” special prize in 2016.

A white paper entitled “Rally Raid and Sustainable Development” was published in 2017 with the objective of stimulating discussion and creating a new dimension for rally raids: that of respecting local populations and the environment
