In the 1950's and 60's women in many

countries prescribed thalidomide as a sedative

and to help with morning sickness. The drug

causes terrible birth defects and the children

of pregnant women taking the drug were often

born with horrible malformations including

shortened arms, hands extending directly from

the shoulder, and the absence of the thumb

and the adjoining bone in the lower arm.

15,000 children worldwide were born with

these serious defects before the drugs were

pulled off the market.

Ozone

The ozone layer reflects or absorbs 99% of damaging UV rays from the sun, preventing them from reaching the earth’s surface. However, pollution is compromising the ozone layer allowing more and more of the UV rays to reach the earth’s surface.

The ozone layer is a protective covering that surrounds most of the earth and protects us from harmful UV rays. It has three oxygen atoms, rather than two oxygen atoms like the form of oxygen we breathe during respiration.

There are a number of activities and events that cause ozone destruction. Hydrogen bomb testing

CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) in aerosols and refrigerants

Exhaust gases from supersonic aircraft

Fertilizers and

Volcanic eruptions.

You Can Control Your Environment

HIV can be passed from mother to child during delivery. About ½ of infected mothers will pass HIV to their child during childbirth

Newborns of crack cocaine mothers are born addicted to the crack. They experience tremors, seizures, and other withdrawal symptoms.

Gonorrhea and syphillis are transmitted to the eyes of the newborn causing blindness.

Some STDs have no cure and are common (e.g., genital herpes).
