    1. Greenpeace

    An independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes

    and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace. Present in 40 countries across Europe, America, Asia, Africa and the Pacific.1. 350.org

    An international environmental organization, headed by authorBill McKibben,

    with the goal of building a global grassroots movement.

    1. World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF)

    WWF's mission is to stop the degradation of our planet's natural environment,and build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.

    Invested well over US$1 billion in more than 12,000 conservation initiatives since

    1985

    1. Friends of the Earth International (FOEI)

    The world's largest grassroots environmental network. They campaign on today'smost urgent environmental and social issues.

    The current campaign priorities of Friends of the Earth internationally are:economic justice, forests and biodiversity, food sovereignty, climate justice andenergy.

    1. Project AWARE A growing movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet one dive at a

    time. Focusing in on two major ocean issues Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris, or

    trash in our ocean.

    Individuals:1. William Ernest "Bill" McKibben Author of a dozen books about the environment, beginning with The End of

    Nature in 1989, which is regarded as the first book for a general audience onclimate change.

    Founder of 350.org and Step It Up 2007 to demand curbs on carbon emissionsthat would cut global warming pollution 80 percent by 2050.

    1. Gaylord Nelson Principal founder ofEarth Day- intended to inspire awareness and appreciation

    for the Earth's natural environment

    1. Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in Africa and helped to plant over 10 million

    trees, providing jobs to the unemployed while also preventing soil erosion andsecuring firewood

    In 2004 Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

    1. James Lovelock

    Proposed the Gaia hypothesis which says the Earth's biosphere works as asingle living organism, able to manipulate the climate and chemistry of theatmosphere and the oceans to keep them fit for life.

    In James Lovelock's 2006 book, The Revenge of Gaia, he argues that the lack ofrespect humans have had for Gaia, through the damage done to rainforests andthe reduction in planetary biodiversity
