Six days after Dave Gordon resigned as mayor, the Black Diamond City Council appointed Councilwoman and mayor pro tempore Carol Benson as his replacement. The council chose not to advertise or request any appli-cations for the position from the public.

“We had the public’s input,”

Benson said after her unanimous appointment. “We all got elected by 70 percent.”

The council made quick work of their selection Dec. 1 in front of more than 40 residents in the City Council chambers.

Benson opened the mayoral appointment discussion by saying there is a lot of “talent” on the cur-rent council and picking from that pool would be the most expedi-tious course of action. The other four council members voiced their

agreement for various reasons.

Councilwoman Tamie Deady nominated Ben-son, saying she was “the best for the position” and fellow Council-woman Janie Edelman said Benson’s financial and fiscal background would be an asset.

There was no comment from the public on the matter at either public comment opportunities.

Benson directed the city clerk to advertise for a new council member immediately.

The council has 90 days to make that appointment or the King

County Council will make the selection.

When asked after the meet-ing to explain the importance of the quick appoint-ment, Benson listed a myriad

of city business items that she said must be handled.

She said the 13 work items on the list include, most notably, re-opening the Black Diamond Community Center to the public, the general facil-ities plan and three moratoriums.

Benson said she gets along with ev-eryone on the council and that there will be less contention than there was with Gordon.

The Enumclaw aquatic center picked up $55,000 from a King County Youth Sports Facilities Grant program.

The grant allows for upgrades to the pool and facility.According to release from King County Executive Dow

Constantine’s office, the program evaluates projects based on community need. Across King County the program with matching agreements from the cities, schools and local community groups will add up to $6 million for com-munity parks and recreation projects.

“From upgrading the aquatic center in Enumclaw to providing access to kids of all abilities at a playground in Bellevue, these grants build stronger communities where young people can exercise, learn teamwork and just have fun,” Constantine said.

According to the King County release, the program is funded and sustained through a one-fourth of 1 percent car-rental tax authorized by the Legislature in 1993. Funds can only be used for developing and constructing facilities, not for costs of maintenance or operations.

(Make Checks Payable to: POM-Neighbors in Need)

By Britt NelsonDirector, Plateau Outreach Ministries

Plateau Outreach Ministries is blessed to have an incredible group of volunteers. With over 100 volunteers contributing time, we are able to serve more families in our community.

Our Samaritan (emergency assistance) staff and volunteers are amazing not only in their commitment to POM, but in the empathy they have for every person they sit down with. They listen to dif cult stories. They hear about broken families, lost jobs and health and medical crises that have sent families into despair. They have the dif cult task of listening with their heart and then thinking through all the details of the story to know how best to assist.

One day a young man came in asking for rental help. He could not pay his current rent. He had lost a job. He had another job lined up, but had not yet started. His family was not willing to help and he had no resources to help him through the current situation. As our case manager listened to the story, little things kept changing. “Tell me about the job that ended.” It had actually been quite some time since he was employed. “When will you start your new job?” He hadn’t actually applied yet, but intended to. The more they talked, the more the story changed.

Finally, the young man broke down and confessed an addiction to drugs. He pulled down the collar of his shirt and shared needle marks down his neck. This started a new conversation. “When did you begin using and why?” He was using heroin. He got hooked after an accident and prescription pain medication was no longer available. “Heroin is cheaper,” he shared. This young man was very much in need and very much in crisis. In this situation we

chose not to provide rental assistance, but instead referred him to treatment programs and shelters in Seattle that are equipped to best help with both his immediate needs and his addiction. While we offer next steps and resources, it will ultimately be up to this young man to move toward recovery.

I’m often asked how we decide to help. Our emergency assistance process, while exible in the type of assistance we can provide, is very structured in the procedure. As a person arrives, they sign in at the front desk, ll out an application that asks not only contact information, but income and expense information and what other resources they have utilized. Clients also provide their ID and copies of bills they are requesting assistance with. Case managers review records from any past visits to POM before they meet with the client. After an in-depth interview to establish what type of help they need, the case managers call the utility company or landlord to verify what information has been provided and what amount is due to prevent a shut off or eviction. For private landlords, public records are checked to con rm the legal owner of the property. When and if nancial assistance is warranted, vendors are paid directly, no money is ever given to clients. Sometimes nancial assistance isn’t what the client really needs.

Our staff and volunteers do an incredible job balancing empathy and resources. Sometimes paying someone’s rent or utility is not the best answer. By sticking to our process, actively listening, asking tough questions and truly caring about each person’s situation, we can be the support they so desperately need. With your support, we can continue to offer hope to our neighbors in crisis.

This part of December is the per-fect time to grow your indoor garden. Winter blooms are as close as the house-plant section of the nursery or home cen-ter.

Giving a bloom-ing plant as a gift has some definite advantages:

• when you give a plant you don’t have to worry about the correct size;

• a plant can be given and enjoyed early – no last minute rush;

• no need for gift wrap;• indoor plants improve

air quality and mental health;

• some plants like hel-lebores can be planted out into the garden or bulbs like amaryllis can be regrown for years of blooms.

If you chose a traditional

poinsettia….The good news about

the traditional poinsettia is that new varieties are easier to grow and main-tain. The new poinsettias can add indoor color for nine months or more – if you like having a poinsettia in bloom for spring. Colors are now available in soft pinks, whites, golds and even pastel blends besides the traditional Christmas red. You can also find tiny desktop poinsettias or hanging baskets of poinset-tia that save on space.

Just remember to pro-tect your potted poinsettia from the cold – this means do not let poinsettia sit in an unheated car while you do errands. Keep a paper sleeve around the plant

while traveling to protect it from frosty drafts.

Do not overwater. Yellowing lower leaves are often a sign of too much water so make sure there is a drainage hole in the foil and plastic wrapping.

Help yourself to a hellebore

The holiday gift plant with the fastest growth in sales is the winter-bloom-ing hellebore. This peren-nial has evergreen foliage, long-lasting white or pas-tel blooms and is winter hardy and long lived in the landscape. Hellebores have been more popular than poinsettias in Europe for a decade but are now making their budding appearance in American home stores, grocery stores and nurser-ies, all wrapped up in red foil paper and ready to give as an indoor gift plant.

But wait – there’s more

Unlike a traditional poinsettia, a winter-bloom-ing hellebore can be plant-ed directly into the garden once the holiday season is past. This makes it a popular plant to give to an office or apartment dweller as there will be no need feel guilty about disposing of the plant, pot and soil once the holiday is over. Hand off the hellebore to

any delighted gardener who will enjoy this shade-loving perennial for years to come.

Amaryllis is the drama mama

Give an already bud-ded amaryllis bulb or, for a more dramatic perfor-mance, give a planted ama-ryllis just starting to show green leaves. The thick stem will emerge, bearing huge buds that open up to bright red, pink or white blooms. The huge butter-f ly-shaped f lowers never fail to impress and will last for weeks. Set a pair of amaryllis on a man-tel or place a single pot-ted bulb in a serving bowl surrounded by sparkling ornaments. Your holiday decorating just went from dull to dramatic.

Dwarf evergreens, big impact

Dwarf Alberta spruce can be found at nurser-ies now, often decorated like mini Christmas trees. These will thrive indoors for just a week or so before starting to suffer from the warm indoor temperatures and dry air. Use these ever-greens outdoors as porch decorations and then add them to the landscape when the ground is not frozen.

Amanda Sprau, a mother of three, started making nurs-ery room signs for her kids, and expanded to making signs for baby shower gifts. Spurred by family, she started selling her creations, which she tailored to meet customer desires. Swim and DiveThe Enumclaw High boys swim and dive team opened its

season with a dominating victory over Bonney Lake, showing

both the depth and strength of the squad.Enumclaw beat Bonney Lake 134.5-48.5 and coach Jesse Nitz

expects more of the same as the season progress.“Although we are a small team we have a surprising amount of

depth,” Nitz said. “Even those that are new to the sport are learn-ing quickly and poised to make some serious contributions.”

Nitz said freshman Ethan Horan was one of the pleasant sur-prises with his “natural speed and feel for the water. He’s one of our top swimmers in every event.”

Other swimmers to watch include co-captain Mitchell Petellin, a senior specializing in sprints.

Bryce VanHoof, co-captain and senior, excels in the breast-stroke and medley while junior Brandon Vick swims the dis-tance events.

“The team as a whole has a great vibe,” Nitz said. “Everyone has been giving it their all in practice and are seeing the results already. This is one of those years that all the right guys are on the team at the same time. The guys know they’re part of something special here and are very excited.”

Girls WrestlingThe girls wrestling team at Enumclaw High is on a champion-

ship quest. The eight girls on the team include two-time state champion

KC Moulden at 235 pounds. Moulden is the team captain and has a 75-7 career record.

Last season the EHS girls took second place in the South Puget Sound League 3A, seventh at regionals and ninth in the state tournament.

“Our goal this year is to really focus on improving ourselves as both a wrestler and a person,” coach Jerry Scheidt said. “Even though we voted and have elected one captain, all the girls will

be taking on some leadership responsibilities this year. The goal is to be league champion.”

Enumclaw wrestlers to watch include Raquel Cormier, 15-15 last year. She injured her elbow at regionals but is back in form.

Ally Smith will wrestle at 170, same as last season, and Jaelen Hobert is back on the mat. She was an alternate to state two years ago.

Scheidt said Laurel Zemke, “spent most of last year learning wrestling, but has worked in the offseason doing judo and was a state judo champion...and that has added to her mat time and experience.”

Scheidt said freshman Alexandra Puzon, at 100 pounds, has put many hours on the mat during the offseason wrestling in large tournaments and is expected to make an impact.

The coach said the team has an agreement with the Muckleshoot Tribal School. “We practice, compete and travel together except for when we get to the postseason, (then) we score and become two separate teams,” Scheidt said.

The tribal school has seven wrestlers and the coach is Heather Scheidt. The wrestlers are Jasmine Arivizu, Monique Brace, Lexi James-Mason, Leondra Keeline, Virginia Marquez, Natasha Underwood Elkins and Gahlaho Wier.

Boys WrestlingThe Hornet boys are on the mat, ready to raise their arms in

victory.“As a team we have high expectations this season,” coach

Adam Eilers said. “Our goal is to win our league, regional, sub regional and (reach the) top three in state.”

Kyle Opland is back, wrestling at 113 pounds. Opland took the third-place medal in state last year.

Jake Treece took sixth last season at 106 and is in the lineup.Levi Norton and Hunter Haney were both state qualifiers and

returned for the Hornets.Eilers also noted two freshman, Kioni Gill and Quinton

Southcott. Both were in the finals at the White River Classic Saturday.

EHS athletes aim for success

The White River High wrestling program has

headed into the winter season with a healthy dose of returning grapplers on both the boys and girls side of the ledger.

The teams kicked things off Saturday, with the boys hosting the annual White River Classic while the girls headed to an invitational at

Emerald Ridge High.

White River girlsThe top returnees are

found among the ranks of the Hornet girls.

Heading the list is senior standout Hannah Lewandowski. All she did during her junior campaign was win regionals and then pin three state foes at the Class 2A state tournament. She came up short in the state finals, but brought home second-place honors.

She’s not the only Hornet girl with state-tourney experience. Also returning this year are sophomore Erin Redford and senior Kendra Blue; each won a state match last year before being eliminated.

That trio helped White River to a strong regional showing last year. The team placed fourth, trailing only the Class 3A Lakes Lancers and 4A teams from Puyallup and Emerald Ridge.

Aside from the state-tested veterans, “we have an aggressive group of first-year wrestlers that are

excited to hit the mats,” coach Rich Valdez said, noting that he has 18 grap-plers turning out.

“Look for us take some noise in the Tacoma Dome in February,” he said, show-ing confidence in his squad.

White River boysThe White River boys

are paced by state veteran Alex Armstrong. Last year, as a freshman, Armstrong qualified for the Class 2A state tourney, where he won a match.

This year’s squad also boasts a handful of Hornets who made strong show-ings at last season’s region-al tournament. Among those are seniors Mason Hamilton and Erik Ball; juniors William Brown, Dylan Kohler and Case Ford; and sophomore John Ayala.

Beyond that, “Our num-bers are down a bit and we’re pretty young,” coach Joe Klein said.

Hamilton shared third-place honors at the week-end White River Classic.

The votes are counted, but contributions continue flowing to participants in this year’s election.

Tens of thousands of dollars in political donations had been reported to the state Public Disclosure Commission ahead of this week’s deadline for candidates and party com-mittees to reveal their receipts for November.

Early filings show that victors are reaping some nice spoils, especially on the Republican side of the aisle.

State Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, who won re-election to her 31st District seat by defeating a Republican state rep-resentative, collected nearly $10,000 from a fundraiser in Olympia put on by a cadre of longtime lobbyists.

And The Leadership Council, a fund con-

trolled by the Senate Republican Caucus, had hauled in $127,550 through Dec. 1. That will replenish a cache depleted by the spending of $3 million to defend incumbents and add a 25th member to secure the majority in the Senate.

A similar scenario is unfolding in the House, where Minority Leader Dan Kristiansen, R-Snohomish, ran unop-posed yet five donors delivered unsolicited checks adding up to $3,250.

And the Reagan Fund, which Kristiansen and his fellow caucus leaders control, has garnered $47,500 since the elec-tion, in which Republicans gained four seats in the House.

One reason some lawmakers — not all — are out asking for money is that the rising cost of campaigns creates an insatiable need for it.

Also, state law bans lawmakers and statewide officials like the governor from political fund-raising within 30 days of a legislative session. That’s inspired many to get what they can through solicitation letters and fundraisers before the freeze sets in Dec. 12.

Why individuals and interest groups respond with post-election contributions is the other side of the equation.

Sometimes it’s as simple as a longtime supporter wanting to donate one more time, like a congratulatory pat on the back.

More often, if the donor is an active participant in politics and intends to walk the hallways of the Capitol during the upcoming session, it is prudent to acknowledge a lawmaker’s electoral success with a contribution.

Consider the action of Stand for Children in Washington, an influential voice in the state’s education reform move-ment.

The group gave $950 to Roach on Nov. 21, even though it endorsed opponent Cathy Dahlquist in the election. If the group did not want to see Roach win this time, why would it provide funds it knows will go to help jump-start her next campaign?

“Sen. Roach invited us to a post-election fundraiser, and we participated since she has been aligned with us most of

Question of the WeekIs Christmas celebrated as a secular event in your home, as opposed to a deeply religious holiday? To vote in this week’s poll, see www.courierherald.com

LAST WEEK: Do you support the

ongoing protests related to the developments

in Ferguson, Mo.?

Yes: 8.8% No: 91.2%

The year was 1798 and the Federalists, fearful of the French Revolution spreading to the United States, passed three Alien Acts as well as a Sedition Act, which prosecuted and imprisoned those who publicly criticized the gov-ernment. President John Adams promptly signed them into law. The United States was soon to be fighting a two-year, quasi-sea war with the French who were fighting the English, again. These new laws gave the president more power to deport immigrants and to make it harder for new immigrants to vote.

The Alien Acts increased the num-ber of years it took for an immigrant to vote from five years to 14. Clearly, the Federalists saw these new immi-grants as a security threat.

“As one Federalist in Congress declared, there was no need to ‘invite hordes of Wild Irishmen, nor the turbulent and disorderly of all the world, to come here with a basic view to distract our tranquil-ity’” (U.S. History.org).

This anti-foreign mood had political undertones. Most of the immigrants, mainly Irish and French, were destined to vote for the Thomas Jefferson’s pro-French Democratic-Republican Party. By lengthening the time for immigrants to become citizens, Federalists could delay votes being cast for their political opponent.

Eventually, Thomas Jefferson and his party were able to rally

support against Adams and the Federalists over these acts and sweep into power during the elec-tion of 1800.

Passing these laws was an act of desperation and fear on the part of the Federalists. Their party would eventually die in 1814 after New England, the geographic heart of the Federalist Party, threatened secession over the War of 1812 against the British. That war was hurting their trading profits with their main customer, Britain.

I think of the Alien and Sedition Acts when I see what the Republicans in Congress are doing with the immigration issue. They are, in many ways, in a no-win situa-tion. If they pass reform of the immi-gration law, it is likely these even-tually-naturalized undocumented aliens will vote Democratic (the party founded by Thomas Jefferson) like their Irish and French immi-grant predecessors.

If the new Republican majority in Congress does not pass immigra-tion legislation, Latinos – the larg-est ethnic minority in the U.S. –

will permanently turn against the Republicans because Republicans will be seen as hating ethnic minori-ties. It must be a frustrating situation for Republican leaders. Dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t.

This is one major reason why the Republicans have delayed reforming immigration for so long. Republicans are in a real bind as their political base ages and dies during the next decade or so. Who will replace them? How can the Republicans, like their Federalist ancestors, continue to survive as a political party? Will they, like their predecessors, die? Will a new political party emerge to take what remains?

The Republican Party emerged as the reform party in the 1850s when it was created in the politi-cal and racial turmoil that led up to the Civil War in 1861 – the political activists whose main push was to end slavery in America and who fought the Civil War as the party of Lincoln. In gratitude for their freedom, those former slaves voted Republican as a block until Democrat Franklin Roosevelt became president in 1933.

Will this anti-immigrant cycle be repeated over the next 30 to 40 years? Time will tell. The Republican Party would do well to remember their founding goals in the 1850s rather than those of their political ancestors – the Federalists of the 1790s.

Through the many years I’ve writ-ten these columns, I have on occa-sion, especially during the holiday season – in fact, I suspect, only during the holidays – offered reci-pes for some of my favorite dish-es, drinks and sweets. And since I’m currently suffering through a minor episode of writer’s block, owing in large part to the late-night gaiety that characterizes this time of year, original ideas about Christmas-related subjects are dif-ficult to come up with.

So, I hope you’ll forgive me if I take the easy way out of such mental con-stipation and repeat some of those recipes. Besides, given the late-night gaiety just mentioned, chances are most of you probably won’t remem-ber that I’ve used them in previous columns. I offer these candy recipes that I especially identify with the holidays.

Almond Roca1 pound butter 2 cups sugar

1 cup chopped almondsIn a heavy pot, melt the butter,

add sugar and bring to a boil. Add almonds and stir constantly until light brown (approximately 20 or 30 minutes.) Pour onto a buttered cookie sheet. Cool.

Melt a large Hershey bar and spread on the toffee candy. Cover and press with a sprinkle of shred-ded walnuts.

Peanut butter balls1 cup peanut butter1/4 cup butter2 cups sifted powdered sugarMix and roll into 3/4-inch balls.

Freeze. In a double boiler, melt one

12-ounce package of chocolate chips with 2 tablespoons of paraffin. Dip balls into chocolate and put on wax paper. Refrigerate.

“Special” fudgeIn a bowl put:1 cup chopped nuts1 12 oz. package of chocolate chips1 cube butterIn a sauce pan put:1 cup sugar1 small can canned milk (2/3 cup)15 large marshmallowsBring to a boil and cook for 6

minutes.Pour heated contents over mix-

ture in bowl and stir until chocolate chips and butter have melted. Put on a 8-inch square pan lined with wax paper.

Obviously, these aren’t recom-mended for anyone on a low-fat/low-cholesteral or sugar-free diet. For the rest of us, they’re delightful little taste treats.

Cheers!

Enjoy a taste of the holidaysWally’s World

So, what am I, if all I do is spew “Christianese” and positive rhetoric – all while harboring bitterness toward my wife and ene-mies? I’m simply a big, fat, Christian facade!

The word of God is abso-lutely essential but, when it’s only a mummified auto-response to all of life’s problems, without follow-up actions, and similarly absent of love, then the real problem is me. At the end of the day, I’m realizing that my breakthroughs in life happen only while I’m in an authentic relation-ship with Jesus. Prayer. Talking to God. Listening to God.

Romans 5:5 talks about God’s love being poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who was given to us. In my greatest triumphs I proclaim that scripture to be infallibly true. Most days, I lose sight of its real-ity and end up wishing I could love so much more

than I have chosen (thus far in my life). I’m realizing that one of the greatest keys to breakthrough in real relationships, in the real world, is by really (no, I mean really) praying, even when you’re really mad. That’s right... I’m suggesting that in the middle of your angriest moment – pray! Pray mad. Love hard even when you don’t feel like it.

The other night my wife, Molly, and I were involved in a rather passionate dis-agreement. It was like we were truly from two differ-ent planets trying to talk about this particular issue. In the peak of my frustra-tion, I raised my voice and dramatically asked, “What do you want from me?” With a seemingly height-ened sense of awareness and maturity, she calmly said, “I want you to practice what you preach and I want

you to love me and lead us in prayer.”

Whoa! Every ounce of my flesh despised her words but every molecule of my spirit knew she was com-pletely correct. She needed me to take the lead and hold her hands and pray in the very middle of the muck and mire in which we found our conversation residing. My inner dialogue told me that she’s trying to manipulate me by “play-ing the religion card.” The only problem was that her request was so perfect I hated it. Why didn’t I think of it first?

I gritted my teeth as I nestled her hands in mine.

I fought off angry thoughts as I reluctantly began my prayer. I told God I was frustrated and I needed his help to be long-suffering and loving. I asked God to help me see Molly how he does and to help us both forgive and love each other right now in this very moment. Even as I stub-

bornly clutched my anger and bitterness, I asked God to help me get rid of it and to help Molly do the same. Then, we both heard a voice from the clouds.

Just kidding! Actually, we didn’t hear anything. We said, “Amen,” then sat staring at each other.

Molly, in all her wisdom,

then came up with a real doozy of an idea. She said something that initially seemed beyond ridicu-lous. She said, “Why don’t you rub my feet a little bit, they really hurt.” My first thought was, “Hey lady, we were just in an argument.”

God empowers us to love, forgive, bless othersChurch Corner

SPORTS ROUNDUP

By Kevin HansonSenior Writer

The Plateau’s Hornet hoop pro-grams split a doubleheader Friday evening, as the Enumclaw boys won in dramatic fashion while the White River girls rolled to a deci-sive victory.

The games – season openers for both schools – were staged in the White River gymnasium.

The boys had fans on the edge of their seats as the seconds ticked

away. White River held a 59-57 advantage, but Enumclaw had possession of the ball. The vic-tory was sealed when, with just seven seconds remaining, Josh Erickson nailed a 3-pointer to give Enumclaw at 60-59 triumph.

White River kept a lead nearly all the way, starting with a 23-12 margin at the end of the first quar-ter. The Pierce County crew took a 36-26 lead into halftime and still led 47-42 after three quarters of play.

Zac Webb led EHS with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Erickson finished with 16 points and four steals, along with his game-win-ning 3-point bomb. White River had three players crack double figures: Dustin France tallied 15 points, Alex Waller finished with 14 and Brandon Scheer added 11.

In the girls contest, White River held the advantage in every quar-ter, rolling to a 62-46 verdict. Most of the damage was done in the opening periods, with White River

leading 20-14 after the first frame and 33-22 by intermission.

White River’s Kendall Bird, a first-team all-league selection as a freshman, poured in a game-high 20 points. Senior Kristin Sturdivan, also a first-team pick a season ago, added 19 points.

Enumclaw was paced by Hayley Sonneson with 11 points and Samantha Engebretsen with 10.

the time over the years,” policy director Dave Powell wrote in an email.

And there’s SEIU Healthcare 775NW, the statewide union for thou-sands of long-term care workers in Washington. It spent nearly $450,000 in this election — most of it trying to elect Democrats.

The organization gave $20,000 to the Leadership Council in mid-October and $10,000 to the Reagan Fund on Nov. 21, its only contributions to the GOP committees this cycle. By comparison, it gave $162,500 to Democratic counterparts in the House and Senate.

Corporations and busi-ness associations are doing it, too. Alaska Airlines, for example, wrote its first check to the Reagan Fund after the election, and it was for $10,000. Farmers Insurance Group has writ-ten two checks, totaling $80,000, to the Leadership Council.

So while the season of giving to politicians might be drawing to an end, there seem to be plenty of people, and companies, hoping to receive something in return soon.

Vern Del Estabrook, age 76, died November 28, 2014 at his home in Buckley, WA. He was born February 11, 1938 in Ladysmith, WI to Del and Lois Estabrook. Then, I remembered the verse I have quoted so many times to other couples: love covers a multitude of sins. As I started rubbing her feet, I was tempted to give her little toe an extra hard pinch for good measure, but I didn’t. We were soon seeing each other’s perspec-tive and unity and intimacy was re-established.

What I found was that the prayer, coupled with acting in love, helped my mind and emotions catch up. Not because it’s a prov-en generic formula for suc-cess, but rather because we

serve a living God who is real, and whose love resides in and through us... which is more powerful than a mighty river flowing!

Now, I don’t think foot massages are the key to resolving every sticky situ-ation (although I know many might disagree), but I do believe love and kind-ness is the key. It seems to me that the greatest opportunity for break-through in regards to Godly love, grace and for-giveness, is to experiment with it in the midst of frustration, anger and bit-terness. The only problem is that it’s really challeng-ing to do it. And because this is the spiritual section of my writing, I’m tempt-ed to include dozens of scriptures and build com-mentary to them to prove my point. This would be fine and acceptable.

The only thing is: What

God is laying on my heart is to tell you to apply his love in the real world, in your real relationships and of which you’ve been read-ing about in your Bible for a really long time. I need to love even when it’s the last thing I FEEL like doing. I need to forgive when the other person definitely doesn’t “deserve” it. I need to think about others when my brain is screaming, “What about me!?” One problem with this is that apart from God these tasks are impossible.

Now, to my main point – an intimate and personal relationship with Jesus is crucial, otherwise I’m total-ly toast when it comes to being an authentic example of God’s love. What does that mean, you ask?

Nothing too complicat-ed, nor perfect in any way. You see, it’s simply and sin-cerely talking to my Savior,

Lord, father and friend. Then, being still and listen-ing. Not rocket science. Just relationship.

Experiment with this today: next time you’re frustrated, angry or sad, don’t delay or wait for your feelings to feel like pray-ing. Don’t pause for your emotions to stabilize. Force your actions to determine your thoughts by praying in the middle of the muck. Next time you find yourself in the middle of a disagree-ment with a loved one stop, drop it and pray. Pray mad! Love mad! The point is that you are opening the gate-way for God’s love to flow like a river, in the situa-tion and in the hearts of you and the other person. Ultimately, you may very well get in touch with the fact that God empowers us to love, forgive and bless others, more than you ever thought possible.

SPECIAL DELIVERY

I’ve already received thousands of letters from children all over the world,

and I haven’t even sat down with Mrs. Claus for Thanksgiving yet!

I have my little helpers doing all they can to sort through all of your

wishes this year, but with the winter holiday season starting earlier and

earlier every year, I’m afraid I may not be getting everyone’s letters.

So here is a sure-fire way to make certain I receive them:

I’ve been reading the Courier-Herald ever since it started in 1900 – every week I

send a few of my helpers down to pick up some papers for me and the reindeer

(Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen are huge Enumclaw football fans, and Comet,

Cupid, Donner and Blitzen are White River fanatics. You wouldn’t believe how rowdy it

gets up here when the Battle of the Bridge comes around. “When out on the lawn there

arose such a clatter,” indeed.)

I’ve installed an express mailbox at the Courier Herald office in Enumclaw,

specifically for letters addressed to me. If you drop off or mail your

letters to the Courier Herald, they will get printed in the newspaper

and I’ll read them while drinking my morning hot chocolate.

Parents, ‘tis the season for grand holiday meals and delicious

desserts. Mrs. Claus and I have been looking for ways to spice up

our holiday treats this year (an elf can’t live off of candy canes

and sugar cookies alone you know) so if you have a special din-

ner or dessert recipe you’d like us to try, drop it off or mail it to

the Courier-Herald, and it’ll get printed in the paper too!

And children, remember to leave something out for me by

the tree. It’s a long and cold night, and those cookies and milk

help me stay jolly. If you need an idea for what to bake, ask

your parents – they know what I like!

Happy holidays to all, and to all a good night!
