GENERAL COMPETITION GUIDELINES ELIGIBILITY To apply for a High School Student scholarship, you must be scheduled to graduate in 2018 from a U.S. high school or equivalent foreign secondary institution. To apply for a High School Graduate scholarship, you must currently have a high school diploma or GED and not be currently enrolled at The Art Institute of California—San Diego. First Place High School Student Thirteen scholarships will be awarded (one in each program category) $10,000 First Place High School Graduate Thirteen scholarships will be awarded (one in each program category) $10,000 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A. Complete the Entry Form and Release and indicate the program of study for which you are applying. B. Type a 200-word essay indicating your goals and motivation for the scholarship. C. Label all CDs, prints, and other supporting materials with your name and medium used (if appropriate). D. Submit a résumé stating your educational background, extracurricular activities, hobbies, work experience, community involvement, artistic achievements, and/or related awards. E. Submit the original version of at least one recommendation letter from an instructor, academic/ career advisor, or supervisor. The letter(s) should be submitted on official school or company letterhead. F. Submit an official high school transcript. G. Submit a portfolio with all completed individual program entry requirements. H. In the event education is terminated, the scholarship becomes null and void. Failed courses or courses dropped after the drop/add period that must be repeated will be charged at the current per credit hour rate. Additional restrictions and requirements may apply. OTHER OPTIONS Do not plan to finance your education by anticipating a scholarship. You may want to apply for financial assistance either through The Art Institute of California—San Diego or the federal and state governments. INDIVIDUAL SCHOLARSHIP ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Advertising (AS/BS)Submit a portfolio of an ad campaign for a new car:a) Two magazine ads; b) One billboard; c) One poster;d) Another advertising medium that reflects your best talent.Artwork may be on a CD or in print.

Graphic Design (AS)

Graphic & Web Design: Graphic Concentration (BS)Submit a portfolio that includes the following: a) One poster design; b) One realistic colored illustration; c) One black & white pen-and-ink or pencil drawing; d) One fully colored illustration which reflects your best talent using any medium. Artwork may be on a CD or in print.

Graphic & Web Design: Web Concentration (BS)Web Design & Interactive Communications (D)Submit a CD or DVD that includes the following: a) Five-page, interactive website that includes original interface design and content; b) a sitemap for that website; c) an original media project created using Flash or any video or motion graphics application (at least 30 seconds and no longer than 90 seconds).

Interior Design (BS)Submit a portfolio of 8x10 color prints or a CD showing art and creative design ability. Submissions must include sketches or renderings, and perspective drawing with hand lettering. Floor plans and room elevations are desirable, but not mandatory.

Audio Production (AS/BS)Submit a portfolio that includes the following:a) An original soundtrack at least 60 seconds long; could bea song (yours or a cover), could be a mashup featuring yourediting skills, could be a commercial, a film score, or a sounddesign for a game concept. Submit on an audio CD or as anaudio file; b) A 500- to 600-word essay of an analysis of anysong. Discuss the instrumentation and recording techniques(is it more of a performance or more of a studio-enhancedcreation?) and how that song fits into that artist’s body ofwork; c) Any links to your social networking pages, website,or any other self-promotional materials you have developed;d) Lastly, a short 150- to 200-word essay on your interest inand experience with audio production and what attractedyou to the Audio Production program at The Art Instituteof California—San Diego.

Digital Photography (AS/BS)

Digital Image Management (D)Submit at least four, but no more than ten, original photographs. Submissions must include the following types of photographs: a) A portrait; b) Wildlife and nature; c) Black & White; d) Documentary or photojournalism. Photographs

should be printed and submitted in a binder, along with your typed materials. All work must be formatted as individual PDF files and submitted on a CD or DVD. Identify each individual file with your name (example: photo2_Jsmith.pdf).

Game Art & Design (BS)Submit a portfolio using your knowledge of video games and include the following: a) A game design (2-3 pages) for a new game. Designs should include such information as type of game, style of play, and characters (if any); b) One drawing or digital rendering of a character; c) One drawing or digital rendering of a set location.

Media Arts & Animation (BS)Submit a portfolio of 10-15 pieces, which could include any of the following: Drawings from life, digital illustrations, character designs, storyboards, composite images, render stills, paintings, or maquettes. All artwork is to be submitted in a standard 8.5 x 11-inch notebook with the work displayed in 8.5 x 11-inch plastic folders/inserts. Photograph or scan pieces in order to make prints that meet these specs. If you have any animations, motion graphics, or videos with special effects, they are to be submitted on suitable electronic media. Please submit copies of your artwork, not your original pieces.

Visual & Game Programming (BS)Submit a URL to a game or interactive project you have created. Or, submit an original game concept which includes at least one top-down map of a game level, a back story, a description of the game’s genre, and the target device on which the game will be played.

Fashion Design (BFA)There are many popular young movie actresses known for their style and beauty. Using your favorite movie star as your inspiration, submit two original clothing designs. Design one look for casual wear and design another look for a red carpet event. Submit in illustration format: a) Both design sketches mounted on an 11 x 17 black foam-core board, with color story and fabric choices attached; b) A one-page design inspiration, along with design boards to describe your concept and ideas; c) Secure the one-page inspiration sheet on the back of theboard, along with your name and contact information.

Fashion Marketing & Management (BS)

Fashion Retailing (D)A well-known fashion magazine has hired you to create a fashion editorial for the holiday edition. Submit a six-page photo spread to create excitement and interest in the magazine and its advertisers. The goal is to build excitement and generate sales of the magazine from the cover. The secondary goal is to create awareness for the products in the spread. Submission requirements: a six-page photo editorial modeled after your favorite fashion magazine. Use the magazine for your inspiration. Write a target market summary with a description

Hospitality Food & Beverage Management (BS)** Submit a portfolio containing: a) A menu (service for four) composed of one appetizer, one soup or salad, and one entrée (must include one protein, one starch, and one vegetable; garnish optional); and dessert. b) Detailed menu descriptions. Students should base their menu on a $50 spending limit; c) Detailed recipe cards for each menu item (for four portions each); d) Detailed method of preparation descriptions for each item (can be included as part of recipe cards if desired); e) Itemized and priced shopping list; f) Photographs of each menu item.

JUDGING The Art Institute of California—San Diego faculty, under the direction of the Academic Affairs department, will serve as judges for the competition. All decisions will be final.

OBLIGATIONS OF WINNERSThe recipients must begin their programs of study in the summer or fall of 2018. Scholarship awards are evenly distributed over the recipient’s program of study. Scholarship winners must complete the 12-month program within 15 months, the 18-month program within 24 months, or the 36-month program within 45 months. Scholarship recipients must maintain satisfactory academic progress. Scholarships will be suspended in quarters when the student’s cumulative grade point average falls below 2.5. All scholarship recipients must apply to and be accepted at The Art Institute of California—San Diego.
