MESSAGES FROM THE PRESIDENT AND ACADEMICIANS

"Gujarat is the home of the entrepreneurial spirit. We have so many second and third generation entrepreneurial businesses that need professionalism to guide them into the new business age. The EMBA programmeme will give students with entrepreneurial ambitions and students coming from business backgrounds the opportunity to explore diverse facets of professionalism that they can utilize to successfully grow their businesses beyond boundaries."

Shri Sanjay Lalbhai(CMD, Arvind Ltd.) President, Governing Body, Ahmedabad University

Family businesses are the backbone of the Indian economy. However, sooner or later they face challenges relating to accountability, generational change, renewal and professionalism, among others. How these challenges are handled osten makes the difference between success and failure.

Therefore it is of utmost importance that the new generation that is poised to take over these businesses is educated about these challenges. Our flagship EMBA programmeme is designed to help the participants confront precisely these challenges. It is an innovative design that combines domestic and international learning as well as theory and practice. It is the perfect setting for participants to think about scaling new heights in their personal and professional lives.

Dr. Shailendra Raj MehtaProvost, Ahmedabad University

"What family driven businesses or entrepreneurial ventures need is progressive professionalism. That is what transforms them from SMEs to Industry Champions. The AU EMBA is designed to deliver this."

Shri Prafull AnubhaiChairman, Board of Management, Ahmedabad University

"The EMBA programmeme will shape the world view of its students to operate in a globalised economic environment. Budding entrepreneurs and scions of family managed businesses will be sensitised to the need to blend entrepreneurship with professionalism, risk with systems and process, intuition and judgment with analysis, change with continuity, leadership with humanity and creativity with everything. Students will develop insights that will help them lead their organizations to a higher orbit."

Achal Bakeri Chairman and Managing Director, Symphony Limited

“Several new ventures and new initiatives of family businesses do not see the light of the day. The reasons may be many; but important among them could be the lack of formal and relevant education that is weaved together with the dream of a potential entrepreneur and facts of business. We sincerely and successfully attempt to bring many supporting hands together for “the learning by doing” of the budding entrepreneurs and wards of family business owners.”

Dr. Bhavesh Patel Dean Amrut Mody School of Management, Ahmedabad University

CURRICULUM DIFFERENTIATORS FOR THE ENTREPRENEURSPROJECT GULLIVER

Project Gulliver (Let the Journey Begin) is an integral part of the EMBA programmeme that aims to give participants an exposure to the less realized but important realities and practices of everyday life. From participants doing their own daily chores to travelling with a backpack for adventure anywhere across the country, to practicing yoga and meditation, the "EMBA Gullivers" will learn skills such as team work, time management, leadership and self help. Various activities in Project Gulliver shall imbibe self realization, a sense of self respect and appreciation for others in all its participants. Project Gulliver is module based, is spread across all semesters and may have a residential component anywhere in India.

PERSONAL GROWTH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Analytical techniques and subjective managerial knowledge, when put to practice, requires sost skills and a professional understanding of routinely dealing with colleagues, sub-ordinates and delegates, in order to succeed. Keeping this simplest of knowledge in mind, we have inculcated workshops, seminars and lectures to create ‘live’ opportunities for students to observe, reflect upon, and develop knowledge necessary for their own personal growth.

BUSINESS RENDEZVOUS ASSIGNMENT

“Business Rendezvous” is introduced with a though that “History is a great teacher” where participants dig deep into the journey of their own businesses and the struggle of their family. This diary of their business motivates them to achieve higher goals for the business by keeping their family values and ethics at heart.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP

The EMBA think-tank believes that, It is important to work in some other organization before joining your own. However, it is more relevant if this experience is in some related organization. The institute facilitates Internship in any related firm (other than own) for about 6 to 8 weeks at the end of the first year and it is a compulsory requirement of the programmeme.

CAMBRIDGE MODULES IMMERSION PROGRAMMEME

International exposure is needed for shaping any family business, taking it to greater heights and thus nurturing entrepreneurship zeal. Currently, Judge Business School, Cambridge University hosts EMBA participants for four weeks under International Immersion Module. The participants undergo class room sessions, industrial visits, networking sessions with related industry leaders and individual mentoring for the business plan with international experts at Cambridge University. However, the immersion module likely to get extended in countries like Japan and China for enhanced perspective of international markets.

The module offers guided sessions by experts for preparing a business plan and is closely monitored by industry experts, faculty mentors and family mentors. It encompasses phases in India and abroad and culminates into a business plan. The eligible participants get an opportunity to present their plan in-front of funding agencies at the end of the course. Apart from the graded courses, the programmeme also offers opportunities to network with related industry leaders through right kind of platforms.

ENTREPRENEURIAL TALKS

Direct interaction with leaders of pioneering business houses, business oriented workshops and seminars, guest lectures and group talks by successful and eminent business personalities enable students to closely examine the personality of an entrepreneur and their ways of dealing with business situations. Rushabh ShahEMBA 2013-14

A year of E-MBA programmeme is very important for me because this programmeme had helped me to choose the correct business model for my existing business, this programmeme made me able to extend my family business to the higher level.as well as doing something of my own. Core faculties of AU as well as Guest faculties are very good. Learning from leaders was one of the best experiences during My E-MBA journey. Faculty mentoring had helped us till the end in Light House Project.

And a month of Cambridge immersion Is like cherry on the top of cake. Cambridge has lots of inspiration and enthusiasm in its air. Every day in Cambridge University had taught us a lot.

Zeel Raval EMBA Batch 2013-14

Of the 52 years of my life ,I have been a first generation entrepreneur for 33 years Although having considerably made my name in the Industry I belong to , I realized that in today’s competitive and ever changing business environment, my traditional knowledge and experience of working would not be enough to take the business to the next level. Hence, I decided to join AMSoM - EMBA along with my 23 year old daughter. The objective was simple – understanding the complexities of business management in a structured manner . Bottom line is I wanted to be as updated as the next generation. With all honesty, what I have learnt at AMSoM - EMBA is truly an eye opener. I realized that I knew just one perspective to business management really well! The rest were either things I discounted in value or which I had never explored - even aster being in business for so long. AMSoM - EMBA offers all that is required to shape students into fine entrepreneurs – however, students too need to take the initiative and absorb all of it. The Know your business - Grow your business model is simple but profound. The more you know your business and learn about it, the more you will earn by bringing in the best of practices. As an EMBA entrepreneur, I call it the ‘Save Money – Earn Money’ model. I can literally imagine the millions I would have saved had I had this knowledge when I started into business.

Himanshu Shah, EMBA 2014-2015 Batch, Chief Mentor, SOI Live Marketing and Events

REFLECTIONS FROM ALUMNI AND CURRENT STUDENTS

I can honestly say my EMBA experience has been one of the best experiences I have had during my post-graduation. Not only was the entire programmeme interesting, but also the fact that students from various business backgrounds were brought together in a discussion based setting challenged us to listen to viewpoints that we otherwise may have never thought of.

Kartik MamlatdarnaEMBA Batch 2011-12, Director, Duracon Cement Pvt. Ltd.

My one month at the University of Cambridge during the EMBA programmeme was undoubtedly the most exhilarating, life changing and defining experience. It revealed a world of unlimited opportunities to me. It definitely ranks as the best education offered anywhere in the world. I met students from dozens of countries and scholars who fueled my intellectual curiosity. I support AMSoM in gratitude for the experience it gave me and also to enable it to afford the same experience to future generations.

Anoli Shah EMBA Batch 2011-12,Director, PPEC Ltd. (Plastic Products Engineering Company Ltd.)

EMBA to me is a complete package of formal business oriented education that would position me better in the field of family business. International exposure at one of the best universities in the world, This course has granted me good industry interaction which would enable me to connect the theory with the practical application. Awe-inspiring list of professors have made the learning process simpler and effective. Being from the field of hospitality and retail, certain business techniques, both qualitative and quantitative were lacking in me. This course helped me bridge the divide between my work experience and my deficiencies in being a successful entrepreneur

Malav J VaruEMBA Batch 2010-2011

The EMBA programmeme has given me a mix of personal and professional growth which in turn will help me in shaping myself for the long professional life that lies ahead of me. I can see an overall difference in me and l am confident of my abilities which I would use to take my family business to newer, unconquered heights. A Light House project in one's own business is a blessing in disguise, which on completion of the course can be actually applied and developed into a totally new business. Many concepts have become clearer and I have become strategically sound.

Aayushi Shah, EMBA Batch 2010-2011, Director, Sakar Healthcare Pvt. Ltd.

An MBA degree in itself is of no use until it comes with the proper skills. Education and networks. These were my exact expectations from this programmeme. The chance to study at the world renowned Cambridge University is indeed an added advantage. The course has added to my skill-set, some of the most essential skills needed to become an entrepreneur not just a businessman. A better understanding of the functions of an organisation as a whole is what I got by the end of this progamme. Being able to have a holistic view of things along with better analytical skills and improvement in presentation and communications is how I could sum up my experience of this programmeme.

Tanmay Karande, EMBA Batch 2010-2011
