At the same time, we secrete saliva to moisten the food and to provide a small amount of amylase enzymes to help break down starches into simple sugars; therefore, the enzymatic process is already beginning as we chew our food. After it is swallowed, the food goes into the stomach. Many people do not realize that there are actually two distinct and identifiably different parts of the stomach—the upper cardiac stomach and the lower gastric stomach. Food sits in the upper portion of the stomach for between 30 and 45 minutes; at the same time, the lower stomach begins its process of concentrating hydrochloric acid and secreting digestive enzymes for the processes in the gastric stomach. Throughout this process, the food is systematically broken down into smaller and smaller elements; eventually, the useful building blocks, vitamins and minerals can be passed through the wall of the small intestine and made available to the metabolic process of the body. Various studies confirm that as much as 50-60% of the total digestion of the food can take place in the upper stomach, thanks to the action of naturally occurring food enzymes. Cooked food, missing these enzymes (they are destroyed by heat) is therefore not properly prepared before it gets to the gastric stomach. This puts the entire burden of digestion on the gastric stomach and the small intestines, a role that these organs were never intended to play. Whatever is left over is converted into feces and excreted after passing through the large intestine. Plant-based enzymes like the Acu-Zyme product line are highly active in this upper portion of the stomach and can thus replace the enzymes lost through the cooking and processing of food.

4. HOW DIGESTION WORKS:

Digestion begins with the chewing of food in the mouth. During this

time, the cell membranes of the food are ruptured; this makes

the molecules more easily accessible to enzymatic action. At

the same time, we secrete saliva to moisten the food and to

provide a small amount of amylase enzymes to help break

down starches into simple sugars; therefore, the enzymatic

process is already beginning as we chew our food.

After it is swallowed, the food goes into the stomach. Many people

do not realize that there are actually two distinct and

identifiably different parts of the stomach—the upper cardiac

stomach and the lower gastric stomach. Food sits in the upper

portion of the stomach for between 30 and 45 minutes; at the

same time, the lower stomach begins its process of

concentrating hydrochloric acid and secreting digestive

enzymes for the processes in the gastric stomach.

Throughout this process, the food is systematically broken down

into smaller and smaller elements; eventually, the useful

building blocks, vitamins and minerals can be passed through

the wall of the small intestine and made available to the

metabolic process of the body.

Various studies confirm that as much as 50-60% of the total

digestion of the food can take place in the upper stomach,

thanks to the action of naturally occurring food enzymes.

Cooked food, missing these enzymes (they are destroyed by

heat) is therefore not properly prepared before it gets to the

gastric stomach. This puts the entire burden of digestion on

the gastric stomach and the small intestines, a role that these

organs were never intended to play.

Whatever is left over is converted into feces and excreted after

passing through the large intestine.

Plant-based enzymes like the Acu-Zyme product line are

highly active in this upper portion of the stomach

and can thus replace the enzymes lost through the

cooking and processing of food.

THE MERIDIAN FORMULAS (Nos. 1-14 ) Acu-Zyme also includes 14 meridian formulas in its

range of products. The meridian formulas are based

on traditional Chinese medicines concept of energy,

known as chi. According to the teachings of Chinese

medicine, the body’s overall physical and spiritual

balance is governed by the smooth flow of chi along

various meridians (or energy pathways) in the body.

If the energy becomes stagnant or blocked in any

way, pain or illness may result. There are different

points along the meridian that can be tested to

determine where the blockages have occurred.

Practitioners of acupuncture place hair-thin needles at

specific points along the meridian to redirect the

energy flow and release blockages. This system views

the body as a holistic, balanced network, rather than

a series of organs and symptoms.

The conception of meridians is also the basis of Applied

Kinesiology, a Western approach to the science of

meridians that is often used in combination with

chiropractic. Applied Kinesiology relies on muscle

testing—monitoring the muscles resistance to various

movements—to determine the location of excesses

and deficiencies of energy.

Richard Utt developed a more advanced method of

undertaking the principles of Applied Kinesiology,

known as Applied Physiology. This method measures

the flow of the energy through the meridians. The

practitioner then applies various modalities to release

blockages whereby tremendous amounts of energy

are freed. Utt, along with herbalist and author

Humbart Smokey Santillo, developed the specific

Clinicians have failed to recognize the value of plantenzymes therapy because they rely on bromelain, papain, pepsin or pancreatin, if enzymes are used

at all. The severe limitations of these commonly usedtypes of enzyme supplements account for the inconsistentresults often obtained with them... Concentrated plantenzymes, on the other hand, work in both the stomachand small intestine. In the stomach, plant enzymespredigest food for up to 60 minutes before the bodyconcentrates its own digestive fluids, thereby sparing thepancreas from producing extra digestive enzymes.”- Loomis, “Improve Digestion with Plant Enzymes”,The American Chiropractor, February 1990

AVAILABLE IN A RANGE: ALL PURPOSE FORMULA (NO. 15) -For general daily use as a digestive aid. This original balanced multiple

enzyme blend was developed by Dr. Edward Howell in the 1940s

and used successfully by hundreds of thousands of people ever since.

The newly improved double-potency form, developed about 10 years

ago, ensures that the product meets modern dietary needs as well as

remains economical; only one supplement is needed with each meal.

This improved formula contains a well-balanced blend of proteases,

lipases, amylases and cellulases, created to optimize the molecule-

splitting activity needed for the human body. These enzymes are also

effective at normal body temperatures (from around 95 degrees to

105 degrees Fahrenheit), with a pH range from 2 to 9 (highly acid to

highly alkaline). It is important to note that popular papaya enzymes

are optimally active only at much higher temperatures (around 140

degrees F); therefore, they cannot provide much assistance to human

digestion, since the body never reaches these temperature ranges.

In fact, papaya or bromelain enzymes are usually used industrially

or in commercial meat tenderizers, rather than as dietary supplements.

ALL-PURPOSE FORMULA & LACTASE (NO. 16) The original enzyme blend (in single-potency formula) enhanced with

lactase enzymes. Lactase enzymes split the complex milk sugar lactose

into simple sugars, rendering dairy products more easily digestible by

those who cannot digest lactose without severe gastric distress or other

allergic reactions. This formulation is ideal for anyone with lactose

intolerance. In April 1986, the FDA Observer Magazine, a publication

of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, recommended lactase

supplements to aid with the breakdown of milk sugars.

Carefully craftedformulations

to meet your body’sindividual needs

studied enzymes for more than 50 years and authored Enzyme Nutrition

and Food Enzymes for Health and Longevity, has shown that each food

contains the appropriate balance of enzymes needed to digest all of the

various elements (carbohydrate, fat, protein and fiber) of that food.

2. WHAT DO ENZYMES DO IN THE BODY? There are three major classes of

enzymes important to human nutrition. METABOLIC enzymes are found in

and do their work in the blood, tissues and organs of the body. They

undertake all of the complex biochemical actions required to sustain life.

DIGESTIVE enzymes are secreted by the pancreas and other digestive

organs when food is introduced in the body. These enzymes aid the body

in breaking down ingested foods into the basic building blocks needed for

growth, development and health. FOOD Enzymes (also known as

Nutritional Plant Enzymes) are found in raw, uncooked foods, such as

fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains and soaked seeds and nuts.

Additionally, raw meat, raw milk and raw butter also have associated food

enzymes.

There are four major sub-groups of enzymes, as defined by the type of food

they break down:

1. PROTEASE - Protein-splitting enzymes. These are responsible for breaking

down proteins into amino acids.

2. AMYLASE - Starch/carbohydrate-splitting enzymes. They break down

carbohydrates into simple sugars.

3. LIPASE - Fat-splitting enzymes. They break down fats into essential fatty acids

and smaller chains of fatty acids like triglycerides.

4. CELLULASE - Cellulose-splitting enzymes. They break down fiber which would

otherwise remain intact in the digestive tract.

All of these sub-groups of enzymes are present in metabolic, digestive and

food enzymes. The exception is cellulase, which is not synthesized by the

body and must be brought in with food.

3. WHY ARE DIETARY ENZYME SUPPLEMENTS NECESSARY? Enzymes play a

critical role in the bodys overall health. If you are unable to digest the

food you eat, you will be unable to utilize any of the many beneficial

nutrients; instead, these nutrients will simply be stored unused or excreted

after passing through the digestive system. If enough nutrients are not

absorbed due to a lack of natural enzyme activity in the body, signs of

deficiency will become apparent. In this case, simply taking additional

vitamins and minerals will not help. Instead, enzyme supplements are vital

in aiding the complex digestive process:(continued)

❖combination of enzymes and herbs that became the Acu-

Zyme Meridian Formulas. Each of these 14 formulas is

designed to aid in developing and unblocking the energy

flow of a specific meridian in the body; they are best used

in cooperation with any modality (acupuncture, Applied

Kinesiology, Applied Physiology) designed to release chi.

(A trained alternative practitioner can help you identify

areas where meridians are blocked.) These formulas can be

used independently of the daily All-Purpose Enzymes.

Taken with meals on a regular basis, Acu-Zyme enzymes help

optimize the nutritional value of the foods you eat and the

supplements you take. In this era of fast food, food

processing and over-cooking, the need for added enzymes

has never been greater.

Enzymes and Digestion:A QUICK AND EASY GUIDE

1. WHAT ARE ENZYMES? Enzymes are usually described as

protein molecules, but this is only partially true. An enzyme

is actually an energy force which manifests itself through

certain very special types of protein molecules. Think of a

light bulb: The bulb itself is inactive (dark) until an electrical

current is passed through it. In the same way, a protein

molecule (the bulb) is activated by the presence of an

enzyme. However, preserving this energy is difficult;

enzymes are extremely sensitive to temperature. In cooked

foods, enzymes are usually destroyed long before the

vitamins and minerals. Thus, cooked foods might be very

rich in nutrients but totally devoid of the enzymes necessary

to help with the digestion that gives the body access to

those vitamins.

Although they are the most well-known, digestive enzymes are

not the only type of enzymes. In fact, metabolic enzymes

are active in every organ, tissue and fluid of the body. In

addition, enzymes are found in all foods in their natural,

uncooked state. Research by Dr. Edward Howell, who
