ABSTRACTThis report contains the second, third, and fourth year
retention, transfer, and graduation patterns at each Maryland publiccommunity college for all first-time, full-time students and African-Americanfirst-time, full-time students for the entering classes from 1985 to 1994.The following highlights are presented: the four-year success rates of newfull-time freshmen, measured by the percentage of those earning a degree orcertificate or transferring to a public four-year campus, has steadilydeclined since 1989. The same pattern emerged among full-time AfricanAmerican community college students. This decline resulted from a sharp dropin the number of African Americans who transferred to a public four-yearcampus. The four-year success rates of full-time African American communitycollege students have consistently and substantially lagged behind that ofall students, although the gap has slightly narrowed since 1985. Thecommunity colleges with the highest four-year success rates for the enteringclass of 1992 were Howard, Charles, and Frederick (40% or higher). Those withthe lowest were Prince George's, Cecil, and Baltimore City (26% or lower).The community colleges which had the greatest four-year success rates amongAfrican Americans in the 1992 cohort were Chesapeake, Frederick, Essex, andHagerstown (21% or above). Those at which African Americans were leastsuccessful were Prince George's, Montgomery, and Charles (17% or lower).(VWC)
