That is why at Enterprise Saint John we strategically target time and resources to go after opportunities which have the greatest potential to benefit from what we have to offer… that’s putting forward our best value propositions. We start by working with existing business and industry to grow the talent and assets we have on the ground. We look to the energy, advanced manufacturing, tourism, technology and health sciences sectors to target additional investment opportunities which complement these home team businesses. It could be an up-stream or down-stream manufacturer, or a service or knowledge provider which gives a sector critical mass. And we’re seeing results. We now have a solid foundation and diversified economy, and are that much closer to fulfilling our vision of making Saint John a magnet for innovation, creativity and business investment where you can live life on your terms. May’s inspired entrepreneur: Jacques Desjardins When Jacques Desjardins moved to Saint John three years ago from Fredericton, he knew he wanted to start his own technology-based company, but where to begin? So in early 2009, he reached out to Enterprise Saint John and got the help he needed to prepare a solid business plan. This resulted in his approval of a Seed loan and the launch of his first online business, called JMailer. Now, a year later, Jacques continues to get support from Enterprise Saint John by attending seminars and network- ing events. In fact, he has now turned from student to instructor, offering “E-mail Marketing: Small Business Secrets for Success” through Enterprise Saint John to young and aspiring entrepreneurs. He also credits Enterprise Saint John for helping him reconnect with his newest business partner, Daniel Wheaton. The tech-savvy duo have just launched an internet and mobile marketing company, called Flipside Marketing www.flipsidemarketing.ca. Moving forward, they will continue to get support from Enterprise Saint John who is now helping them meet with different business groups to generate awareness for the services they offer. That’s keeping Saint John on the move! “Big thanks to Sarah Jones and Hemant Kumar… Enterprise Saint John has supported me and helped me grow as an entrepreneur. The art of the possible in health & life sciencesEnterprise Saint John is helping discover the art of the possible in Saint John’s growing health & life sciences sector. Bringing together the University of New Brunswick, Horizon Health Network, Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, and Industry Canada, our sta support, resources and collaborative approach have been instrumental in bringing together key stakeholders and passionate community volunteers to work together to maximize its potential.

Job and investment retention is just as crucial to a healthy economy as attracting new opportunities to our region. That is why Enterprise Saint John recently attended an information session concerning New Brunswick’s forestry sector where we were reminded of the vital contributions to employment, investment and innovation forestry makes to our region. This motivated us to write a letter to the Premier expressing our concern over New Brunswick’s declining wood supply and possible resultant job losses. We are optimistic that by working together sustainable timber objectives can be set which hold industry accountable to world-class environmental standards yet still ensure continued investment for generations to come.

ICT ecosystem

Inspiring entrepreneurshipThe opportunity to grow any economy is by grabbing a hold of ideas then nurturing and growing them into sustainable business opportunities. These are some of the eorts Enterprise Saint John led in May to support entrepreneurship:

“Introduction to Marketing” workshop

younger people were nominated for the Next Gen NB Awards

received one-on-one counselling beyond the initial meeting stage

product prototype workshops

Supporting our home team forestry sector

Enterprise Saint John is partnering with Uptown SJ to take the lead in developing an innovative approach to promote, prole and empower the growing ICT and professional services ecosystem thriving in the Uptown. By telling the ICT story, it will help local employers in the ICT sector recruit talent, go after new investment, and maximize export potential. A number of steering committee meetings and conversa-tions with sector leaders have been conducted to help articulate what makes Saint John a special, unique and compelling place for skilled ICT workers to live life on their terms.

Council presentationEnterprise Saint John’s Board Chair, Tony Gogan and CEO, Steve Carson, presented activities, strategic priorities and sought input for 2011 to Grand Bay-Westeld Council on May 9. Feedback was positive and Mayor Grace Losier thanked Enterprise Saint John for the eort and results to date. Discussion followed regarding Enterprise Saint John’s lead role in “exploring the art of the possible” for the new Colonel Nase Boulevard. The Boulevard, scheduled for comple-tion in the fall, will open up 440 acres of property for development o Route 7.
