What are Communication Awards?• Objective: To recognize TAE4-HA members for

significant accomplishments in presenting 4-H to the general public, civic groups, 4-H groups, or individuals through public information methods.

What are Specialty Awards?

• Objective: To recognize TAE4-HA members for significant accomplishments in special programs or events related to specific program areas, audiences or delivery methods.

Eligibility• Any member of TAE4-HA who was a member in

good standing at least the prior year as well as the current year is eligible for the awards. Dues must have been paid by December 15th, 2010 for your entry to be considered.

• Team awards must include at least one TAE4-HA member. TAE4-HA members receive plaques, and additional team members receive certificates.

General Rules• Agents may submit one entry per class. All

entries must be produced from January 1 to December 31 of 2010.

Abstract - Feature Story

Melissa Henry Putnam County Central Region

Tennessee Objectives

To promote Putnam County 4-H youth programs to all eligible persons To recognize 4-H=ers for their achievements To inform citizens of Cookeville and Putnam County about 4-H activities

Target Audience

4-H members, parents, volunteers and supporters Readers of The Herald-Citizen, daily newspaper of Putnam County

Current Population

The population of Putnam County is around 68,000 Putnam County 4-H enrollment is 2,510 4-H members in 116 organized clubs

Publisher=s Requirements

The Herald-Citizen has no specific requirements for news articles, they prefer them to submitted with a contact name and number, the pictures to be as close to subject as possible and the article typed; articles may be submitted by email

Methods Used

Agent wrote article about successful competition run of the 4-H hippology team after winning state contest Agent typed article using Microsoft Word 2007 Agent submitted photos in JPG format, suitable for newspaper use Agent submitted article and photo through email to the newspaper editor

Resources and Costs

Agent typed article using Microsoft Word Article appeared in The Herald-Citizen in the Sunday edition, when circulation is around 16,000 subscribers Cost of production was $0

Impacts or Results

As a result of this feature story, the public was more aware of the success of our hippology team and the components of the contest. As result of the team’s success we added our first junior division team and once again had 3 teams compete in the state contest.

• Purpose: To provide educational information that is accurate, concise, and makes listener respond in a positive manner or to attract listener's attention, hold attention, and make listener respond in a positive way.

• If a series of lessons, enter only one or designate which lesson on the tape or CD should be reviewed for judging. Indicate length of recorded segment to be reviewed.

Diversity Award• Purpose: To recognize outstanding effort and

accomplishments in achieving and sustaining diversity in the NAE4-HA organization, programs, and/or audiences.

• Diversity is defined as acknowledging, understanding, appreciating, valuing, and celebrating differences among people relative to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status, or sexual orientation. (List is not all-inclusive and is not limited to those that are mentioned.)

• Include no more than three (3) pages of narrative addressing the award criteria and Three (3) letters of support, one of which may be from an Extension administrator or supervisor.

Educational Technology Award• Purpose: To recognize the use of technology (such as

computers, video, web pages, etc.) in delivering or managing educational programs; to expand the use of technology education in 4-H; to promote logical problem-solving techniques using educational technologies.

• Include a success story limited to five (5) pages on how you have applied educational technology to your work and the impact to the intended audience.

• Individual or Team entries.• The targeted audience may be youth, adult, or a

combination. Adult audience may include staff, volunteers, or other youth educators.

Excellence in 4-H Club Support• Purpose: To encourage and recognize the efforts of Extension

professionals who support and strengthen their 4-H club program.

• A club is "an organized unit providing a long term experience for youth and adults". Programs nominated for this award may have taken several years to implement or may be short-term, single year efforts. An individual cannot receive this national award more than once.

• State the effort's goals and objectives. Indicate program need. Describe outcomes or impacts. How did the effort strengthen your 4-H program?

• Limit supplementary materials to three (3) pages. You may include photos, news clippings, or letters, etc.

• National winner receives $500.

• Program/project must have been conducted in the past year.

• Program must involve two (2) or more different program areas (i.e. Agriculture, 4-H Youth Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Natural Resources, or Community Development).

• Describe the educational impact of the program, project or event upon the community and/or 4-H program. How was this determined?

• How were adults, teen leaders, and other youth involved in major leadership roles in the program, project or event? Be specific.

• To strengthen the commitment to programs with teen audiences.• Individual: Programs developed by an Agent or county staff for

primary use in a single county or area. Encourages networking with others, but primary programming was for a single community.

• Team: Must show evidence of joint planning and implementation by two (2) or more county/state individuals.

• Purpose: To recognize outstanding efforts by members in the area of Urban 4-H Programming.

• To strengthen the commitment to Urban Programming curriculum.

• The nominee should have conducted the program or activity within the last two (2) years, and it should be part of the ongoing 4-H program in the county.

• Youth participants must live in an urban community or the program must take place in an urban community. For these purposes, an urban community is defined as a contiguous community with a total population of at least 50,000 and a population density of 1,000 per square mile.
