Understanding somatic tinnitus

Neuromod Devices and PC Werth hosted ‘The Science of Tinnitus’ at the Royal Society on 13 March. Professor Deb Hall, the Director of the NIHR Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit, and Dr Ross O’Neill, creator of mutebutton®, intro-duced tinnitus concepts and the diagnostic tools available to tinnitus practitioners.

Underlining the complexity of individual treatment, Prof Hall’s research concluded:• Research into tinnitus treatments is hampered by the lack of standardised metrics.• Prescribing hearing aids is only marginally effective.

Dr O’Neill introduced the concept of somatic tinnitus, which is linked to the body’s physical state, traumas and movements, as opposed to being a single neuro-logical phenomenon. Thus practitioners can approach tinnitus multimodally.

Attended by a select list of invitees, the evening ended up exploring the challenges of tinnitus treatment. The mutebutton system will be available in the UK in summer 2015 through PC Werth.

Acoustic CR Neuromodulation treatment shows promising outcomes

A recently published article in Frontiers of Neurology reporting on patient outcomes with Acoustic CR Neuromodulation at The Tinnitus Clinic (UK) has added to the growing body of evidence on the treatment benefits for subjective tonal tinnitus.

Sixty-six patients were followed for 26 weeks of therapy. Visual analogue scores showed significant reduction in loudness (25.8%) and annoyance (32%) over that time, and THQ scores improved by 19.4% compared to baseline. Over 70% of patients had a significant reduction in tinnitus annoyance and for around 60% there was a reduction in tinnitus loudness.

Mr Nitesh Patel, ENT Consultant at Bart’s NHS Trust, who oversaw the study reporting said, “There is not nearly enough quantitative reporting of outcomes from tinnitus treatments. I commend The Tinnitus Clinic for challenging its own work in a quest for further evidence of tinnitus treatment efficacy.”

Cochlear™ Nucleus® Aqua+ the world’s first waterproof behind the ear solution for cochlear implant users

The Cochlear™ Nucleus® Aqua+ is a form-fitting, easy-to-use accessory that allows Cochlear™ Nucleus® 5 and Nucleus 6 Sound Processor users to hear while taking a bath or while enjoying water activities such as swimming or snorkelling.

Aqua+ is a flexible, watertight sleeve that simply fits over their sound processor behind the ear. A specially-de-signed waterproof coil then connects to the sound processor within the sleeve. This is the most discreet, comfortable solution on the market, Cochlear explains (no need for cumbersome bulky extra parts or wiring).

Nucleus 5 and Nucleus 6 Sound Processors already have a high water resistance rating of IP57 (only when used with a rechargeable battery); but with Aqua+, the rating achieved is increased to IP68 (rechargeable battery required). Aqua+ is safe to use in all types of water including in chlorinated swimming pools, fresh water lakes and rivers, oceans and soapy water.

Additionally, the Aqua+ is a reusable solution that allows the form-fit-ting sleeve to be used numerous times without having to replace it.

Sivantos extends binax family of Siemens binaural hearing aids

Sivantos (formerly Siemens Hearing Instruments) continues to build on the success of its successful binax platform with Insio binax—the world’s first family of custom instruments to offer binaural directionality – with only one microphone! For the first time, wearers of tiny custom products are able to enjoy automatic and adaptive directional microphone technology.

In a bilateral fitting, new binaural OneMic directionality makes the most of e2e wireless™ 3.0 which exchanges audio signals between two hearing instruments, creating a virtual four-microphone network. All Insio binax models can be remotely controlled via Siemens touchControl™ App for smartphones and are available in 7bx, 5bx, and 3bx models.

“Until now, the benefits of advanced directionality were not possible in hearing aids with one microphone. Now, hearing care professionals can offer binax technology to patients who demand the discretion of a CIC,” said Wendy Davies, National Sales & Audiology Manager at Sivantos Limited.

The new Motion binax is easy-to-handle, offers even better amplification, and is now equipped with Narrow Directionality and Spatial SpeechFocus. Available in 7bx, 5bx, and 3bx performance levels, the rechargeable Motion SX binax and the DAI-ready Motion SA binax feature a new, compact housing design with improved directionality. The rechargeable Motion PX binax provides a high level of amplifica-tion to cover a broad range of hearing losses.

New tinnitus Ocean Waves therapy signals: All binax performance levels now include new Ocean Waves tinnitus therapy signals for added flexibility in tinnitus treatment. In addition to the proven static therapy signals, wearers who prefer a more natural therapy signal can now choose from four nature-inspired ocean wave themes.

Along with Insio and Motion binax, the 3bx performance level is also being extended to Pure™ binax, Carat™ binax, Carat A™ binax, and Ace™ binax.

VanB Enterprises supports American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association Team

The American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association (AHIHA) US Team is again this year being supported by VanB Enterprises LLC of New York, the maker of the Hearing Aid Sweat Band tm. The team competed in the 18th Winter Deaflympics in April 2015 in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

Ramon VanBuskirk wore a hearing aid most of his life. Not surprisingly, his BTE instrument gath-ered moisture, dirt and grime subsequently causing loss of hearing and battery life. Determined to lighten the destructive cycle of sweat, humidity, and airborne grit, VanBuskirk conceived a solution to repel the damaging effects of natural processes.

He began working on his idea in the 1980s. Now, three decades after VanBuskirk began tinkering with his idea, the Hearing Aid Sweat Band™ still stands today as the most effective armour to protect against shorting and cleaning due to everyday moisture from the human body, perspiration, airborne contaminants, rain, snow, etc. in a nice fitting protective cover.

Introducing the incredibly small and unbelievably smart Cochlear™ Baha® 5 Sound Processor

The new Cochlear™ Baha® 5 Sound Processor is the industry’s smallest bone conduction sound processor and the first sound processor to stream sound directly from an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

The Baha 5 Sound Processor was recently awarded the prestigious 2015 Red Dot Award for product design. This international prize is only given to the most creative, innovative and high-quality products, so Cochlear feels greatly honoured to be presented with this award.

Using an iPhone to listen to a favourite song or speak easily to a friend is something that most take for granted. But for many people with hearing loss, it is not always that straightforward. Despite advances in technology, people with hearing loss have difficulty using a phone and have to depend on additional devices to connect their phone with their hearing device.

Recipients with a Baha 5 System can enjoy music, games, movies, apps – even a video chat call to family on the other side of the world with sound streamed straight to their sound processor. It is easy to set up and easy to use, so people can connect and stay connected to the devices and people they love.

How can wideband acoustic immittance help with otoacoustic emission testing?

OAE tests are easily affected by middle-ear conditions, which can lead to false-positives for sensorineural hearing loss. This is a common issue in newborn hearing-screening programs, but it also affects hearing evaluations in children and adults. If wideband reflectance is elevated, it shows acoustic power cannot propagate through the middle-ear as easily, and both the OAE stimuli and the returning OAE are attenuated. With OtoStat 2.0 by Mimosa Acoustics, the user gets both middle and inner-ear status with the same probe fit and equipment, all on the same screen. OtoStat 2.0 is a user-friendly, handheld device with colour touch-screen. It comes with wideband acoustic immittance and DPOAE tests, designed for clinical use. Users can connect the OtoStat tothe computer to run the OtoStation patient-management system.

Advanced Bionics receives CE mark approval of expanded MRI compatibility for cochlear implants

HiRes 90K™ and HiRes 90K™ Advantage cochlear implants allow 1.5T MRI scans with the CI magnet in place.

The HiRes 90K™ and HiRes 90K™ Advantage cochlear implants received CE Mark approval in March from the European Notified Body, TÜV, to undergo 1.5T MRI scans without removing the internal magnet. Previously, these devices had regu-latory approval to undergo MRI scans only if the magnet was removed.

This additional compatibility for MRI scans helps simplify the diagnostic process by avoiding additional pre- and post-MRI procedures to remove and then to replace the magnet.

4RHINO: a new rhinomanometer

The 4RHINO system is a diagnostic device for rhinological functional diagnostics based on four-phase rhin-omanometry. The intended use of the device is to deliver functional param-eters in the course of a complete rhin-ological diagnostic examination.

Four-phase rhinomanometry is a major technical advancement based on classical rhinomanometry. The four-phase technology employs digital computer-assisted measurement tech-niques. In contrast to other rhinometry devices, which generate a single average value, the 4RHINO system creates a realistic representation of the full breathing cycle in over 3,000 individual measurements. Thanks to modern digital sensors the measurements are faster and more precise. In this way 4RHINO offers a valid measurement instead of a rough approximation.

Sutter will launch this new four-phase Rhinomanometer at the German ENT congress and at the 3rd congress of ORL-HNS in Prague.
