Perpetuity. I never knew how often I would say that word when I took a job at Greenbelt Land Trust. Now, it’s part of my everyday speech. As a land trust, we make commitments to the land that will outlive all of us, carrying a legacy onward for 50, 100, 200 years. Since perpetuity has become part of my vernacular, I find myself thinking about it in many ways. What will our hillsides, our streams, and prairies look like centuries from now? How will our lands support fish and wildlife? What child will be skipping down the trails at Bald Hill Farm in 2118? And, possibly most importantly, what financial base do we need to have in place to support this long-term responsibility for conservation and community for Greenbelt Land Trust? Over the last year this question of funding perpetuity has been one that our staff and board have wrestled with. We embarked on a project to outline our long-term needs, starting with a 10-year horizon that brings into focus a stable and sustainable trajectory of growth that ensures that we are able to safeguard and steward the very places that you, as our supporters, have helped us to protect over the last 29 years. This ‘business planning’ process highlighted several key take-aways. First, Greenbelt Land Trust has a terrific foundation. We are strong because we have people like YOU at our side. Second, Greenbelt has built a solid and diverse funding base, ensuring that our work would not be paralyzed by the loss of any one grant or funding source. Every day I thank the people who came before me here at Greenbelt – who paved the way for building this strong base from which we have leveraged so much success. And then there is the final take-away, which is that we have A LOT more work to do. Not only are there natural landscapes that are in eminent threat of being lost in the next 10-20 years, but we are facing a changing climate.

And, possibly most importantly, what financial base do we need to have in place to support this long-term responsibility for conservation

and community for Greenbelt Land Trust?

How we do this will depend on what we hear from you. Over the next several months we will be doing a lot of listening. Asking our supporters, our volunteers, landowners, and communities to offer their feedback on how to best sustain Greenbelt into the future.

Thirty years ago this was Greenbelt Land Trust, and these founding members said “Think Big”. This

Environmental Education program at Bald Hill Farm

Classrooms Across BordersExplorando Ecosystemas de Oregon

Did you know that the feisty little Rufous hummingbird that arrived at your feeder this spring may have spent the winter in Rio Laja, Central Mexico? In order to preserve habitat for our migratory birds and promote cross-cultural learning, partners in the Willamette have decided to pair up with a twin watershed in Mexico with whom we share the same environmental challenges.

Each year at least a billion birds migrate along the Pacific Flyway, depending upon a diverse mix of habitats along the way - from arctic tundra to rainforests between Alaska and Patagonia.

Three species (Great Blue Heron, Rufous Hummingbird, and Black-Throated Gray Warbler) within the Pacific Flyway have been identified as the focus of an educational component of the partnership, providing a direct biological and cultural link between our two connected watersheds.

Following the Path

Through the Explorando Ecosystemas de Oregon/Exploring Oregon Ecosystems environmental education program, Corvallis dual-immersion 3rd-graders help to enhance migratory bird habitats through classroom and field lessons delivered in Spanish by peer mentors.

Greenbelt and our partners (Institute for Applied Ecology and Marys River Watershed Council) have secured funding to support this education program through 2018, so that students can study birds that live in both the Willamette Valley and the Laja River Basin in Mexico. Through the lens of migratory bird habitats, students will develop their knowledge of healthy ecosystems and the wildlife they support and have an opportunity to share their findings with students in the Rio Laja basin in Mexico. This year 240 3rd-graders will transform Bald Hill Farm into a living classroom through this innovative program and partnership!

Charles Ross Award

The Charles Ross Award recognizes people who have helped to shape Greenbelt Land Trust into what it is today. These are special individuals who exemplify the values of leadership and

I first met Don Boucher on a local trail, peering into the trees next to the creek. I detected movement in the branches and heard a rattling call but couldn’t see the bird that had captured his attention. “What do you see?” I asked this stranger. “A belted kingfisher,” said Don, pointing out the gunmetal blue bird with an oversized bill and punk topknot. We watched in appreciative silence as the kingfisher plunged into the water.

When I started a Volunteer Naturalist program for Greenbelt almost 6 years ago, Don was a clear pick to help orient volunteers to Bald Hill Farm. With Lisa Millbank, Don shares a vast body of knowledge about Willamette Valley ecology through their Neighborhood Naturalist website, newsletter, and field trips. Every year since 2013 Don has volunteered to help Volunteer Naturalists open their senses to the living things that move just around the edges of average human perception.

Volunteers walking with Don for just one morning become more alert observers of

nature by following his example. Don brings sincere wonder and joy to the experience of being a Naturalist, inspiring dozens of Volunteer Naturalists to pass along the wonder and wisdom in turn.

stewardship that our organization was founded on 29 years ago. Cliff and Gay Hall are two such individuals whose strong leadership and commitment to conservation shine through.

Cliff and Gay have demonstrated conservation leadership in more ways than we can count. Whether they are planting tens of thousands of trees on their own property, leading local schoolchildren on river restoration outings, or volunteering with conservation partners throughout Benton County - their selfless spirit courses through our community.

They are passionate advocates for conservation on their own land, a stunning piece of property known as Luckiamute Meadows in Kings Valley. With loving attention Cliff and Gay have restored streamsides, prairie, and wetlands – creating a mosaic of native habitat across 200 acres. As landowners, Cliff and Gay have also worked to permanently protect Luckiamute Meadows through a partnership with Greenbelt over the last 12 years.

In recognition of their tireless devotion to conservation and community, and for always going the extra mile for Greenbelt Land Trust, we are delighted to honor Cliff and Gay Hall with the Charles Ross Award.

For all these reasons and more, Don Boucher is Greenbelt’s Volunteer of the Year. Thank you, Don!

SuperFly Initiative Takes FlightUpland prairie habitat at Bald Hill Farm will be part of the Superfly Initiative

Greenbelt is excited to announce the new SuperFly Initiative. If you’re in the Valley and lookup into the foothills, you will see small remnant meadows that are slowly being lost. These meadows contain some of the last remaining populations of Fender’s blue butterfly and Taylor’s checkerspot, two endangered species that are protected on Greenbelt lands. These butterflies are weak fliers and can’t flutter their way over large forested areas, so they have slowly become inbred due to their isolation in ever-shrinking meadows. Enter Project SuperFly! We will create a FlyWay by removing encroaching brush and fir trees and connecting isolated meadows between Fitton Green Natural Area and Bald Hill Farm. These meadows will be planted with wildflowers that these butterflies depend on and that Greenbelt has cultivated.

Greenbelt supporters can get involved in three ways:

1. Attend workshops, hikes, and volunteer events all geared towards deepening our connections with wildlife.

2. RARE Care – a new year-round program where members sleuth out wildflower populations, collect their seed, grow the plants, and re-introduce them into our newly created FlyWay.

3. Greenbelt Trackers – we’ll be recruiting a few dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers to relocate banded Oregon Vesper Sparrows and track their movements. They like similar butterfly habitat. Get in touch if you are a bird nerd.

We hope you’ll be as excited as we are about the new SuperFly Initiative, whether it’s by joining us on a short ramble or by becoming a full-blown RARE Care member!

Connecting prairie systems

get some “new ideas and new blood” into the race. Time to pass the baton!

Fortunately, we have two new and amazing co-directors, Marc Weber and Drew Ibarra, who have stepped up along with Heart of the Valley Runners to carry the torch forward.

Marc and Drew will add their own, fresh flavor to the race and post-race party. “This is one of my favorite races, and I really want to see it continue to grow,”

Marc says.

This year, Cary will be standing on the starting line for the 30K race as a runner.

Marc, Cary, and Drew celebrate a new era of Run for the Hills

When Cary Stephens first came up with the idea for Run for the Hills (RFH) as a Greenbelt board member, he had no idea that it would raise over $60,000 for area public trails and that it would become a popular community builder. Cary says he’s most proud of “the completion of the whole dream of connecting Bald Hill Farm to Fitton Green” and that “this race celebrates accessible public trails, Greenbelt’s conservation efforts, and our passionate community.”

After directing the run with his wife, Lori, for over a decade, Cary felt that it is time to

Marc and Drew joke that not only will Cary map and run the course, but that they’ll convince him to be the sweeper as well. As an ultra-marathon trail runner logging 50+ miles a week, this will be no challenge to Cary. Thank you, Cary and Lori - and welcome, Marc and Drew!
