    country people. The meet ing at Diamond

    the

    district and at

    tracted

    congregations.

    the Seminary

    our first convert

    in P enwo o d . Ove r 200 people attended

    this

    climbed the

    mountains

    for

    these

    "Christmas trees".

    Perhaps they

    w i l l

    paint

    them

    silver

    before

    decorating

    them with home-made ornaments of

    colored

    p a p er.

     LITTLEJEWELS

    While m o s t Jamaicans spend much

    t i m e

    decorating

    their homes

    before

    "Christmas", Christians and Bible School

    children usually

    pr e par e for special

    sacred concerts. On December 23, my

    Thursday afternoon

    Bible

    class

    a t

    Pen-

    wood

    presented their

    first

    such concert.

    Because

    the tent is so s m a l l ,

    our

    program was

    restricted

    to singing a nd

    recitations. For

    weeks

    about s i x t y

    children

    rehearsed

    their

    parts, s o

    that

    night

    e v ery o n e p e r f o r m e d

    well

    a s Bro .

    Pink

    announced his

    number. Although

    most

    of

    the

    children

    were crowded

    two

    on

    a

    chair,

    they behaved beau

    t i f u l l y . Consequently,

    a t

    the close

    e a c h

    c h i l d

    received

    a

    b a g

    o f

    "sweets".

    Quake

    And

    hake

    A

    few

    months

    ago

    o ur

    f a m i l y

    was

    enjoying

    o ur noon

    meal when,

    s ud

    denly, I

    b e g a n to tre m ble a l l over.

    Was

    getting sick? I looked u p

    at Gray-

    son. On

    his face was a bewildered

    expression. The

    table

    b egan

    to

    dan ce;

    dishes

    in

    the cu pboard

    r a t t l e d ;

    the walls

    seemed to shake. About the same time

    we exclaimed,

    "Earthqua ke "

    Nathan

    started to cry a n d ran to my arms

    for comfort.

    Glued

    to my

    seat,

    I

    just

    simply

    could not m o v e . All I could

    do was p r a y

    that God

    w o u l d care f o r

    us.

    Shortly the

    tremors

    stopped,

    and

    we

    had

    just expe rienced

    our

    f i r s t earth

    q u a k e . We examined

    each room

    to d e

    termine

    the

    damage d one.

    Fortunately

    only a few cracks

    in

    the walls

    appeared.

    God h a d been gracious to us.

    ROCKEDAWAKE

    Some

    later we were awakened

    about 5:15

    a.

    shaking

    o f

    the

    bed. It was as tho ugh we were b e

    ing

    rocked

    in

    a

    cradle.

    At f i r s t I

    thought

    that

    Bach, our black

    dachs

    hund,

    had

    j u m p e d

    upon

    the

    bed

    to

    waken

    u s .

    Then

    the bed shook more

    v i o l e n t l y , and the

    mirror banged

    agajnst._the

    . wall.. .It

    was...our

    s e c o nd ,

    earthquake experience. Although our

    b o y . s slept

    through

    i t , we understand

    s e v e r a l o f their fr i ends were

    t ossed

    out of b e d ,

    DAY

    OFHORROR

    These

    moderate

    tremors brought t o

    mind a c c o u n t s of the d e v a s t a t i o n

    wrought

    b y

    a highly

    destructive q u a k e

    f i f t y years

    ago.

    On January 14, 1907,

    in

    about

    half-a-minute

    a m ighty

    earth

    q u a k e

    reduced

    Kingston's

    business

    area

    to nothing b u t

    debris. It started in

    the

    a f t e rno o n

    with

    a low rumble

    which

    quickly swelled

    to

    a

    mighty

    r o a r .

    T he

    earth heav e d

    and

    rocked,

    spun,

    a nd

    f i n a l l y

    stopped with

    a f r i g h t f u l

    j e r k .

    Other shocks

    followed. During

    the night

    woman and children

    screamed

    as

    l e s s e r

    q u a k e s

    continued. Through

    the

    rubble

    swept a raging fire

    which burned

    f or

    days. About o n e

    to my review

    1955

    I

    was forcibly

    struck

    by

    the

    fact that in one year many

    hopes

    and

    plans

    are now r e a l i t i e s . Certainly,

    TRUECASES

    A year a g o we were

    praying

    for the

    P a u l Smiths-to work

    in

    Grand Cayman.

    In D e c e m b e r 1956, they arrived

    there.

    We

    rayed for

    new

    workers.

    In

    Novem

    ber,

    the

    Fred Hintz family

    volunteered

    for s e r v i c e , and

    i n December,

    George

    W e s t e f e l d t l a n d e d in Jamaica.

    Now

    we

    hear

    fr o m

    two

    more

    mature evangelists-

    who are considering the challenge o f

    Jamaica.

    B a c k in 1955 we were much in prayer

    ove r the Penwo o d R d . s i t e

    and b u i l d i n g .

    Now

    in March, 1957, the

    s i t e has

    been

    purchased, and

    the

    b u i l d i n g i s

    going

    u p.

    I n

    Decembe r, 1955

    we

    prayed for

    a

    radio program. On January 13,

    1956,

    Grayson

    went

    o n

    the

    a i r .

    Through

    1956

    we prayed

    th a t

    our

    radi o c o ntract

    would

    be

    renewed

    i n

    s p i t e

    of

    the

    strong

    d o c t r i n a l preaching.-In-December, i t

    -

    was renewed for another

    year.

    After

    much

    prayer, the

    J a m a i c a

    Christian

    Trust, L t d . , b e c a m e

    safeguarding property. David came

    through

    another

    hernia

    operation suc

    c e s s f u l l y , while

    Mark's

    h e a l t h greatly

    response to

    prayer.

    the beginning

    of 1957
