STEPPING STONES TO SUCCESS! It’s Never Too Late to Graduate! Whether you are 25 or 55 you can still get a high school diploma through the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) or the General Educational Development Certificate (GED). We salute two of our graduates:

KENNETH R. HOPKINS, X31 had a desire to complete his high school education by entering the shipyard’s NEDP in May 2014. He was the first student on the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and York County) and Southside Region to complete the new web-based NEDP training. In August 2015, Kenneth graduated with his high school diploma. He served as the Student Commencement Speaker at the Department of Adult Ed Graduation Ceremony and is featured on the NEDP website. Receiving his diploma opened more doors and opportunities for Kenneth. He is now eligible to become a supervisor or apply for admission to the Apprentice School. In the spring 2016, he successfully completed the Electrical Theory Night School class and is currently enrolled in the summer Algebra I, Part A. His goal to attend classes at a local community college!

ANDREW D. SWEENEY, X18 realized that to meet the changing demands in the shipyard and the world he needed to further his education. He hesitated about 2 years before making the decision to do it. He enrolled in the shipyard’s NEDP program and graduated in 2004. Upon receiving his high school diploma Andrew completed the Hourly Leadership Development Program in June 2011. Then, in 2013, he graduated Cum Laude from Strayer University with an Associate in Arts degree! Andrew was recognized for his accomplishments in Issue 20 of “The Deckplate” and 3rd quarter 2011 edition of “The Shield”. Andrew encourages anyone who needs to further their education to just do it, for your family and yourself!
