École des Neurosciences de Paris Île-de-France ENP

The ENP was created in March 2007 by the Ministry of Research and Higher Education as “A Thematic network for advanced research”. The ENP is a private foundation with a total capital close to 18M€ supported by 5 founders: 3 Research Agencies CEA, CNRS, and Inserm. Two universities, Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) and Paris Sud 11. Since 2008, Paris Descartes university is also a partner of the ENP.

What are ENP goals?

• Enhance international visibility of Paris region in Neuroscience research • Promote synergy between research groups, universities and institutes

in the Paris area • Support frontier research and multidisciplinary approaches • Foster international exchange of knowledge

Since 2007, ENP has launched several programs, recruited and / or supported: - 45 ENP Graduate students: open to outstanding students initially trained outside of France - 5 Starting Grant: start-up supports for young group leaders settled in Paris region - 12 Invited international scientists hosted by ENP teams - 23 Post–Docs received short-term support - 35 Scientific events supported and organized by ENP These actions aim to promote Neuroscience research at its highest level by fostering international exchange and multidisciplinary research.

ENP Graduate Program

The ENP Graduate Program gives international scientists from all over the world the opportunity to pursue a graduate education in our partner universities in Paris: UPMC, Paris Sud 11, Paris Descartes and Paris Diderot. Most of the cursus is in English. The program strengthens the connection between talented international scientists and the ENP multidisciplinary network, which covers all of Neuroscience disciplines.

A 4-year Graduate Program Open to students who received their undergraduate training outside of France. French or foreign applicants are required to hold a diploma at least equivalent to the “Master 2” degree in France for Track 1, or any degree equivalent to the “Master 1” degree in France for Track 2, obtained outside of France, in any field relevant to Neuroscience. French or foreign students who obtained their last university degree in France are not eligible.

Remark: The Bachelor - Master’s Degree system differs substantially between countries, thus applicants need to provide a detailed résumé in order to evaluate their eligibility.

200 to 300 applications / year

The call for applications is announced once a year in fall on the ENP website, for a start in fall the following year. The ENP Graduate Program lasts four years:

Year 1: either Track 1 or Track 2 Year 2 – 4: the three years of the doctoral school

1st Year Lab rotations in ENP team research groups

Master Degree possible completion PhD Thesis Three years in an ENP lab

Support Year 1 1200 € / month

Administrative and financial support for installation in Paris, housing and university registration fees

Years 2 - 3 - 4 1800 € / month Administrative support by ENP staff throughout ENP Graduate Program and financial support for university registration fees

Throughout years 1 – 4, ENP students are requested to attend or participate to scientific events, organized for them or by them, as well as to general or social events. Specific seminars and conferences are specially organized for them. Students in years 2 – 4 are encouraged to attend scientific seminars that are beneficial to their PhD project.

During the ENP DAYS, that take place each year in September, all ENP students are expected to present their research work as posters or oral presentations.

Post Docs

ENP's flexibility gives the opportunity to ENP members to hire young and talented scientists at the very beginning of their career. The ENP Post Doc Program is a short-term solution to cover salary expenses for a limited period: it acts as a buffer before the team receives other grants and long- term support.

This kind of support is meant to facilitate ENP teams’ efforts to attract promising Post Docs. As of today, 21 scientists have started their career in one of our network’s teams.
