Daddys Little Girl

Daddys Little Girl is singer/songwriter Frankie Js song. The single is included in Frankies album, Priceless. Priceless debuted in 2006 by Columbia Records. The video for Daddys Little Girl is directed by Gil Green. The song contains three different scenarios of how fathers leave the lives of their daughters. Scenario one shows a mother and father arguing aggressively while the daughter is crying hysterically. The second scenario is about a woman standing by her fathers side as he dies. The third scenario is about a father leaving because he is going to the military.

Daddys Little Girl is a narrative video that contains a storyline. The video directly connects with the lyrics of the song. The song and video focuses on characteristics other than Frankie J, the artist himself. Frankie Js song and video focuses solely on the connection a daughter has to her father and the hurt that is experienced once the father leaves. The atmosphere creates a sentimental mood and may force one to think about their own connection with their father. To help set the focus on the song and possibly ones own life, Frankie plays a piano with a slow-like melody throughout the entire song. The video is pictured in black and white throughout with mute actors in every scenario. Black and white were the colors chosen because it helps set the sentimental mood and also because the colors together have no life in them; Its something that should not be focused on. Also, the actors being mute allows the viewer to focus on the actions of the actors as they listen to Frankie tell what is going on. For some, this may create empathy but for others it may create sympathy being that the stereotypical family has a father. For those who are daddys girls themselves, sympathy will be created because they would feel the same if they had to go through any scenarios shown on the next few slides. For those who are daddys girls but their father left because they had no choice or it was for the best interest for the family, they can empathize with the song and video. For those who never had their biological father or a father figure in their life, either can feel sympathy because they feel for them or no emotion because they never felt a void in their life by their father being an active participant in their life. Some may also empathize or sympathize because they feel these ways or can imagine feeling the ways presented in the next few slides.

PrayerOne symbol in this video is praying.Right before the father leaves in each scenario, the children pray. Prayer symbolizes the religion and faith the children have. This symbol can relate to any culture who has a spirit or figure they believe in. For most cultures praying means the same thing as other cultures: hoping for the better in oneself or others, believing the want and need for oneself and others are met, praying for favor and gratefulness, and wishing for the wellness of oneself and other. By praying the children show that they have a religion.By praying the children show that they have faith and hope that their fathers will not leave. This shows that when they are out of options and are down to their last chance of keeping their fathers, they recognize that its time to pray he will not leave. Each kid hopes that in exchange of their promises in their prayers, their dads will stay.

Forehead KissesThe forehead kisses by each father symbolizes the love each father has for their little girl. It shows that the connection the daughter has to the father is reciprocated. Kisses have different meanings from different cultures. For some it may be disgraced because it means that sexuality is being exposed and for some it may even mean a simple I love you.Although cultures are further expanded then race, the race in each scenereo show that for Hispanics, Caucasians, and African Americans, kisses on the forehead mean I love you in a daddy-daughter relationship.

Social and Cultural IssuesThe video assumes that the viewers have or had close relationships with their fathers. From Daddys Little Girl, Frankie J is an advocate for fathers sticking around in their daughters lives if possible as well as daughters and fathers having a close unbreakable bond. The target audience is families. I think this because every scenerio presented showed either a family or a father with their daughter. The video does not indicate any sexist or racism. Frankie J is specifically speaking on the father to daughter relationship and is expressed with three different races: Hispanic, Caucasian, and African American. The video sort of supports the stereotype that daughters tend to be closer to their fathers; Although, this may not be true for every child. The video brings the social issue of broken homes possibly creating broken children. In scenerio one the parents are arguing. So when the father tries to leave the mom, by default (until possible custody arrangements) he leaves his daughter too. This could affect this little girl by creating trust issues in her life. Another social issue that is brought to attention is the third scenerio when the father is leaving to go to the military. As this man leaves to serve his country, he has to sacrifice being with his family. He has to leave his family with the everyday worry of getting the knock on the door just to open it and fall to their knees. This can either positively affect the child by him being her admiration or negatively affect the child by her having deep seperation anxiety.

Video as a whole/ summaryThe sentimental video as a whole may hit soft spots for many daughters and fathers. Frankie J and director Gil Green perfectly depict what most father daughter relationships go through once the father has to leave in three different scenerios. To create the sentimental mood he beautifully played a piano while showing the entire video in black and white with silent actors. Frankie gave symbols that show significance by referring to prayer and forehead kisses. For a daughter soon to be without her father, thats all she has left to hold on to. The social issue identified at hand is the broken hearts of daughters and the suffering of families once a father leaves. With that being said, Daddys Little Girl will touch every little girl and their father whether they are going through the situation or not.
