As part of its incremental innova-tion strategy Airbus revealed that the latest variant of the highly suc-cessful A330 – the new 242 metric tonne A330-300 – has achieved cer-tification from the European airworthiness a u t h o r i t i e s (EASA) fol-lowing a 100 hour flight-test campaign. The flight-test campaign of ap-proximately 100 hours was shared between two aircraft: an Airbus test aircraft (MSN0871) which was used to validate some aerodynamic

refinements, and a new production aircraft (MSN1628) whose tasks in-cluded the validation of the centre tank activation and overall perfor-mance effect on the larger A330-300 platform. Notably, the 242t A330’s structure is also the basis for

development of the forthcoming A330neo.

The combination of the increased take-off weight, aerodynamic im-

GE Capital Aviation Services completes purchase-and-leaseback deal with flydubai

GE Capital Aviation Services Limited (GECAS) announced delivery of a new, next-generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft to flydubai following a purchase and leaseback transaction. The aircraft expands flydubai’s fleet and was part of the air-line’s existing order book with Boeing. flydubai currently operates a fleet of 46 aircraft covering more than 95 destinations.

Embraer delivers milestone Phenom Fam-ily Jet to NetJets

Embraer Executive Jets delivered the 100th Phe-nom family jet produced in Melbourne, Fla., just over three years after the first aircraft rolled off this facility’s assembly line. The commemorative aircraft, a NetJets Signature Series Phenom 300, was delivered to NetJets, a Berkshire Hathaway company, and will be part of the company’s Eu-ropean fleet. NetJets and Embraer signed an original purchase agreement for 50 Phenom 300 firm orders and 75 options, in October 2010. The total value of the deal may exceed US$1bn if all options are exercised. In December 2014, an

90 percent of typical routes from London airports for instance.

In the coming months, Airbus also is planning to certify the remaining increased take-off weight A330-300 and A330-200 variants for the jetliners’ other engine choices: the Rolls-Royce Trent 700 and Pratt & Whitney’s PW4000. U.S.-based launch customer Delta Air Lines is scheduled to take delivery of the initial increased take-off weight A330 variant later this year – as the first of 11 worldwide custom-ers who have ordered this option since its launch in 2012. Delta Air

Lines selected the GE-powered version for its 242-tonne maxi-mum take-off weight A330-300.

Eric Zanin, Airbus’ Head of the A330 Programme said: “The lat-est A330’s maximum take-off weight capability of 242 metric tonnes, combined with various aerodynamic refinements and in-creased fuel capacity means that soon operators will benefit from an extended range of up to 500 nautical miles or carry greater payload. Moreover, they will do so with a fuel consumption reduc-tion of up two percent – yet an-

other concrete example of Airbus’ incremental innovation strategy.”

The incremental innovations in-corporated on Airbus’ 242t A330

variant represent a key step on the path toward the A330neo (new engine option), which was launched in 2014.

Second Falcon 8X joins flight test campaign

A second aircraft has joined the Falcon 8X flight test campaign as the ultra-long range trijet con-tinues to pass key development milestones. Fal-con 8X s/n 02 took to the skies from Dassault Avi-ation’s Bordeaux-Mérignac facility on Monday, March 30th. The flight plan was similar to that of the maiden flight on February 6th. After initial checks on the digital flight controls and engine system, the pilots took the aircraft to 43,000 feet and Mach 0.8 for performance tests. After the test routine, the aircraft ran a series of additional checks before touching down after 2 h and 45 min in the air. “We are very pleased with the way the aircraft responded and flew,” said Laverne. “It demonstrated the same flawless handling qualities as s/n 01, a very positive development at this early stage of the flight test campaign.” The aircraft will now join s/n 01 at the Dassault flight test center at Istres, near Marseille, where it will mostly serve for performance testing. The full program will total about 200 flights and 500 flight hours through final EASA and FAA certifica-tion which is anticipated in mid-2016.

Bruce Aerospace obtains FAA and EASA certification for Air France Airbus A319 LED cabin lighting system

Bruce Aerospace has added the Airbus A319 to their list of certified platforms for their popular XLume LED lighting product line. The work was performed by Air France Industries in Toulouse France. The certification covers the installation of new “Plug & Play” Sidewall, Ceiling, Entry and

Lavatory Lights in single white and two-colour options. Air France has selected the two-Colour option of White & Amber. The lights in all four locations retain the same part number but have selectable scenarios. The installation of the “plug & play” LED fixtures was easily accom-plished using the existing wiring and controls. With an LED life of over 60,000 hours, Air France will save costs on labour & materials for lamp re-placement, not to mention savings on disposal of “hazardous lamps”. Additionally, such new lighting products reduce weight and electrical power consumption. This new lighting system introduced on the A319 forms part of a major cabin upgrade programme undertaken by Air France to enhance the cabin for their passengers on its medium-haul service.

FINANCIAL NEWS

On April 8th, American Airlines received a single operating certificate from the Federal Aviation Ad-ministration (FAA) for American and US Airways, marking a major milestone in the integration of the two airlines. The FAA’s approval for American and US Airways to operate under one certificate is the culmination of more than 18 months of work align-ing the carriers’ operating policies and procedures. Beginning today, most flight operations, mainte-nance and dispatch procedures will be identical for all flights. Air traffic control communications will refer to all American and US Airways flights with the call sign “American.” Since American and US Airways merged in December 2013, the airline has been making steady integration progress, including inducting US Airways into the oneworld alliance, merging separate frequent flyer programs into the single AAdvantage program and reaching five-year joint collective bargaining agreements with its pi-lots and flight attendants.

Gogo, a leading provider of in-flight connectiv-ity and entertainment solutions to the global aero market, announced the ATG 1000 – a new connec-tivity system particularly well-suited for light jets, turboprops and owner-flown aircraft. Via the Gogo Biz network service, the ATG 1000 enables high-performance e-mail with attachments and calling and texting with passengers’ own smartphones and mobile numbers. The ATG 1000 is software-up-gradable, which gives customers the unique ability to add connectivity features – such as web browsing – at any time, simply by purchasing a software key. Beyond passenger use, in-flight connectivity contin-ues to grow in popularity among flight crews. In the future, the ATG 1000 is also expected to support se-lect cockpit and operational applications. Originally launched for the business aviation market in 2009, the Gogo Biz network service utilizes Gogo’s unique air-to-ground technology, providing service cover-age throughout the continental U.S. and portions of Alaska and Canada above 10,000 feet.

SmartSky Networks, a next-generation aviation communications provider bringing SmartSky 4G, the first airborne 4G LTE-based wireless network to the aviation market, announced Kontron as a technology connectivity partner at the Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) 2015 convention in Dallas, Texas. SmartSky 4G will provide more than 10 times the typical speed and capacity by ac-cessing 60 MHz of spectrum. Kontron’s addition as a SmartSky-approved partner gives customers greater choice in selecting their preferred Cabin Wi-Fi Access Point (CWAP) hardware for connect-ing to SmartSky 4G. With installations on every-thing from business jets to A330 and B767 wide bodies, Kontron is a well-established and proven supplier to the aviation industry. “The Kontron CWAP’s enterprise routing and Wi-Fi access point functionality aligns perfectly with SmartSky’s open ecosystem. Our partnership with Kontron will ena-ble SmartSky to offer our customers an affordable, yet highly capable, next-generation CWAP option,” said SmartSky Networks VP, Product Development, Blane Rockafellow.

at its disposal for comprehensive testing and mate-rials research for the development of aircraft cabin products. One of the new capabilities is a fire safety lab. From fabric cushions in economy class and fine leather upholstery in business class to noble wood veneer, golden applications or fluffy carpeting in private VIP jets, the selection of materials that can be installed inside an aircraft cabin is extremely di-verse. But not everything that makes life pleasant on board is also suitable for installation in an air-craft from a fire safety standpoint, so all materials used on board an aircraft have to undergo testing of their flame retardant characteristics. Lufthansa Technik performs such tests in its own fire safety lab in Hamburg.

Finmeccanica-AgustaWestland announced the availability of a new AW169 Flight Training Device (FTD) at its A. Marchetti Training Academy in Sesto Calende, Italy.
