CONCERTS AT THE CONSERVATORY 154th SEASON 2018 | 19

ENGLISH

This year, a cycle of great commitment, closely connected with the Quartetto’s traditions, is dedicated to the performance of Beethoven’s last six string quartets paired with Béla Bartók’s six quartets. We undertook this initiative once before, during the 1981-82 season, thanks to an idea proposed by Guido Borciani, and we are offering it again because of this music’s immense value. Six of the world’s finest quartets – the Jerusalem, Emerson, Cremona and Casals (from January to May) and the Takács and Haas (the following autumn) – will present these sublime, visionary compositions. This year, we are inaugurating a Rising Star cycle comprising young people who have already achieved significant international recognition and to whom we wish long life and great musical growth. They include the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam with the clarinetist Annelien Van Wauwe, pianist Alessandro Taverna, cellist Edgar Moreau with pianist David Kadouch, percussionist Simone Rubino (with his phantasmagorical instruments), the Hermès Quartet with pianist Gabriele Carcano, and pianist Seong-Jin Cho, who is the most recent winner of the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. We wish you good listening – and happily, it will be live.

The Società del Quartetto’s musical offering for the 2018-19 season at the Conservatory’s Sala Verdi consists of twenty-two events to be presented by some of the great artists on the international scene alongside “rising stars” who have already received prizes and recognition all over the world. The repertoire ranges from the Baroque to our own day. In an age in which music is increasingly consumed in solitude, be it on screens or through headphones – little doses of musical fragments – it is worth taking the trouble to reaffirm the irreplaceable value of the experience of listening to live music, in concert, shared with other people, without the use of electronic go-betweens: real listening, not virtual listening, that leaves a trace in our memory and increases our baggage of experiences and recollections. This is the moment when our cell phones are finally turned off, the lights dimmed and the magic of music begins to spread out – the moment when a direct relationship is created between the listener and the artist on stage, in a beneficent ritual that is simultaneously collective and individual.

So let’s enjoy this year’s live concerts. The parade of stars begins with the Berlin Philharmonic Octet (with an explosion of joy and vitality from Mendelssohn’s Octet); it continues with such great pianists as Daniil Trifonov, Emanuel Ax, András Schiff (in an all-Mozart concert with his Cappella Andrea Barca), Mitsuko Uchida, Rafal Blachacz and Benedetto Lupo; the violinists Leonidas Kavakos and Isabelle Faust; the King’s Singers, the Cappella Neapolitana conducted by Antonio Florio, and the winds of Les Vents Français led by flutist Emmanuel Pahud.

In recent decades, the Quartetto has been supported by faithful members and by foundations created in their memory. We thank the following: Fondazione Giancarlo ed Etta Rusconi, Fondazione Dragoni, Alma (Pupa) Colombo and, now, Fondazione Araldi Guinetti.

They are Patrons in the Milanese tradition. In order for us to continue to grow, their example has to be followed, even with modest contributions, with voluntary donations (that allow tax deductions), or by becoming Lifelong Members or Supporters. We have also made “modular” solutions possible: individual concerts or initiatives can be sponsored.

Contact us: [email protected], and we will be happy to discuss the matter with you, so that the Quartetto’s future will remain bright.

YOU, TOO, CAN BE A PATRON!

Within the program of our 2018-19 season, we are starting a new cycle, Rising Stars, with strong support from a Foundation named after one of our faithful members, Giuseppina Araldi Guinetti. This is a fine, generous gesture in the most authentic Milanese tradition. Throughout its history, the Quartetto has presented not only the world’s greatest performers but also young artists who have only begun their stage careers but who have a good chance of becoming stars on the international scene. And we wish to help them along their way.
