SPYPHONES A device first used by German tank drivers in 1942 can prove to be helpful in everyday life: people will

no longer have to run out of pubs when their mobile rings showing the number of their boss or their partner. They will talk freely knowing that the person on the other end cannot hear a thing going around them: the roar of the crowd, loud music, or a friend’s laughter.

The device, which is worn around the neck, does not transmit outside noise as it does not use a 5 microphone; instead, a microchip translates voice vibrations in the skin into electrical impulses that are then turned into words. It can be worn under the collar of a shirt, and you can only see an earpiece, although a wireless version is also being developed.

The apparatus has been brought to Britain by Andrew Darby, who saw it in a spy shop in Hong Kong. He thinks that it can be especially beneficial to emergency services, construction industry and sports people, who 10 could communicate with each other in very noisy situations. However, it doesn’t work if you are unable to hear someone speaking to you over the phone. So do not try to go to a rock concert and ring your boss telling them you are at the doctor’s.

YELLOW JOURNALISM Yellow journalism is a type of journalism in which sensationalism triumphs over facts. Some journalists employ colourful language and exaggeration to make a dull, dry story more exciting; sometimes facts are not carefully checked, and even entire incidents are falsified. “Human interest” stories, accounts of murders, scandals and gossip are habitually covered by the yellow press, which developed in the 19th century, especially in the United States. Two early examples of yellow newspapers were the New York World and the New York Journal American, 5 published by magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, respectively. They used a populist approach to political and social issues, and competed with each other with attractive illustrations, articles by talented writers, and cartoons (one of these, called “The Yellow Kid”, gave the journals their nickname). These papers had large circulations and financial success; they became models for the popular press, and a powerful influence on public opinion. 10

The Spanish/American War of 1898, for example, was preceded by intense campaigns in the yellow press encouraging the U.S. public’s patriotism and sympathy for Cuban rebels. Sensational anti-Spanish stories were published distorting the news. Hearst is said to have told his reporters in Cuba, when they found the situation peaceful: “You supply the pictures, and I’ll supply the war”.

THE GLOBAL VILLAGE In Aguaviva, a remote village in Aragón, significant details suggest that life here is not typical. To begin

with, the size of classes in the local school: the number of students per class is considerably higher here than in other small villages. Very few places as far from big cities as Aguaviva can pride on such a substantial attendance. This happens when many schools in the small villages of “deep Spain” close every year, anticipating the death of communities with a history that can be traced back to the Middle Ages. 5

In Aguaviva, another remarkable abnormality can be detected in the children’s voices: Uruguayan-accented Spanish can be heard, as well as Romanian. Foreigners now make up nearly half of all the pupils. They are all new arrivals. According to the school’s headmistress, “At the beginning, the villagers thought it was just another of those bright ideas the mayor has.”

The idea that occurred to Aguaviva’s mayor is simple: fight the danger of extinction by importing 10 children. Foreign families with at least two children of school age can apply for a “social package”, which includes a job and a house, as long as they promise to live there for at least five years. So far ten families, carefully selected from thousands of applicants, have emigrated to Aguaviva.

MARRIED OR SINGLE?

The health benefits of being married are so large that single men are at greater risk of dying than smokers, says a study. This study looked at comparative risks over a seven year period but experts warned that the lifetime risks of smoking were much higher. Scientists have frequently found that married men and women tend to be in better health than their single counterparts. This is partly because of the "social support" of having a wife or husband and perhaps because both single men and women have a worse lifestyle and no-one to take care of 5 them.

Moreover, the latest study by researchers at the University of Limerick showed that, even when the effects of smoking, drinking and other poor lifestyles were taken into account, married men had a much lower risk of death. Professor Martin Smith, who led the research, suggested that male smokers should get married as soon as possible to avoid the risk. He said: "It is clear that a ring of gold, rather than money, is what keeps people alive." 10 However, while over a seven year period, the risks of smoking compared to single life are similar, over a lifetime period the risks of smoking are much higher. Scientists think a long-term smoker has a one in two chance of dying prematurely.

CLIMATE CHANGE According to the UN, climate change will probably transform the way most people live. However, a group

of economists, including three Nobel Prize winners, says this is the least important of the world's immediate problems.

The team of six American and two other economists concluded it is not worth spending money on climate change because the effects were expected to happen in a far future. They recommended that money 5 should be spent on HIV/Aids, water and free trade. But they were immediately accused by international development and environment groups of "understanding nothing about the real world". These recommendations, which mainly throw doubts on the idea that there will be a serious climate change in a near future, have been very well received by followers of the free market round the world. On the contrary, the experts’ conclusions have been attacked by many scientists. 10

The leader of this group of economists, Professor Ludgrum, told the journalists they were what he called the "Real Madrid" team of "galactica" economists. "We are here to reach consensus about how to help the world's poor," he said. "We are economists, and not politicians; we have long, valuable experience in giving priority to basic things, and moreover we are impartial”.
