Brochure
People from more than fifty nations live in Lana. They bring with them a diversity of different cultures. People from different cultural backgrounds are welcome in our community. However we need rules to ensure that everyone gets along well. Getting to know and respecting the rules of their new country is the duty of the new citizens. Only then can living together work well. What does living together locally mean? The municipality plays a special role. Integration takes place especially locally. The locality, neigh-bourhood, nursery schools, schools are the places where integration becomes concrete. It is here where it is decided whether pupils graduate from school, find work, whether friendships grow and neighbourly networks are built up. Public administration plays an important role in this process.Integration is only possible together. We can only reach the established goals if we all pull together. Diversity is an opportunity! If this message is got across, then the local integration policies can be implemented more successfully.Integration is a reciprocal exchange. Tolerance and patience are expected from the local population while emigrants are expected to accept the new culture. However if we polemize and generalize, there is a danger of the discussions taking a turn in the wrong direction and instead of fears being reduced, they will only be strengthened. Integration doesn’t mean that everyone should act in the same way or think the same. Much more, it means creating a culture in which diversity is recognized, in which joint dialogue is possible, because integration only works through language. The municipality sees it as a special duty to support all emigrants in learning both the local languages. Language learning of parents, especially of mothers is deciding, because the lack of integration of women and mothers jeopardizes the integration of the entire family. Therefore all family members should be included in the integration process. It is of special importance that parents actively support and accompany their children and that children do the same for their parents.
Network Migration – Lana
Network Migration Lana can be seen as a gathering of all educational and public institutions in Lana, working with
people who have a background of migration.
The goal of the network is to show the fields of occupation of the individual institutions, to plan and coordinate
activities, to recognize problems and to look for solutions to the same.
Such a cooperation results in quicker, more efficient and versatile action.
We hope this pamphlet makes it easier for you to find your bearings in Lana.

General Information about Schools
• All students are legally obliged to attend school for 10 years, after that, some
other form of higher education or vocational training until 18 years of age.
• Absences from lessons must be excused.
In the case of absence students must submit a written excuse to the class teacher.
The Middle School provides students with an absence booklet in which absences
must be noted.
In case of absences of longer than 5 consecutive days (including Saturday and Sun-
day), a medical certificate must be presented on return to school. Students must
attend classes as far as possible and in case of absence they are obliged to make up
whatever they have missed.
• The collaboration between parents and the school is obligatory. Individual and
general teacher’s office hours and parent- teacher meetings can be used for this
purpose.
• School calendar: At the beginning of the scholastic year, all students receive
the school calendar, in which school -begin/end and holidays are noted.
• School rules and co-curricular activities (excursions, projects…) are discussed
with the parents at parent-teacher meetings. Parents receive a form to be filled
out in order to give their children permission and thus oblige them to take part
in these activities.
• Religion lessons: Catholic religion lessons are held in every
school week. Parents have the possi-
bility of exempting their children from
these lessons. Should your child be
exempted from religion lessons, it will
be supervised during this period, can be
picked up from school or can with your
permission leave school earlier or start
school later.
The State Final Exams take place at the end
of the third Middle School class and must be
completed by the 30th of June.

MOCA – Migrant Consultation Meran
The Migrant Consultation Meran offers citizens with a background of migration
assistance in the search for work, further vocational training and language courses.
The information centre offers support in writing Curriculum Vitae and in preparing
for job interviews. In collaboration with the initial point of reception of the Caritas
in Bozen, we respond to queries about residence permits, unification of families and
citizenship, as well as voluntary return to the country of origin. The office develops
individual projects for the clients in collaboration with private and public
institutions.
Showers, washing machines and driers are available for access in the new
headquarters. A social meeting point is organized, where immigrants can meet
each other and different initiatives can take place.

Language courses for immigrants
alpha beta piccadilly
alpha beta piccadilly offers German and Italian courses for adults.
With sufficient demand, courses start in autumn, winter and spring. Courses are
held in the morning, afternoon or evening and groups usually consist of
10-12 people. We try to arrange the days and times of the courses as far as possible in
accordance with the needs of the participants. If necessary, a childcare service can
also be provided.
Our first course for immigrants took place in Lana in 2004 and there have been
many further courses since then. With regard to didactic methodology, the courses
are based on our many years of experience in the field of literacy and language
teaching. The “communicative approach” is used as the teaching method and in
all classroom activities care is taken to ensure that interaction within the group is
encouraged and used effectively through pair and group work.
We also offer various Italian and English language camps and courses for children in
the summer.
The courses receive financial support from the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/
Bozen.

Kinderfreunde – Afternoon Care
for primary and middle school pupils
Kinderfreunde afternoon care assists parents during the whole scholastic year. We
offer parents flexible care times from Monday to Friday from 12.30 hrs to 18.00 hrs.
Parents can use the afternoon care over the entire period or also on individual days
or for individual hours in the week.
Our focal points:
1. Concrete assistance with homework
2. Sensible leisure activities
3. Consideration of individual needs of children and adolescents
4. Balanced lunches and healthy snacks
Children and adolescents with all their needs and interests are the focus of our
work. We create a stimulating learning environment that allows for a variety of
experiences, promotes all-round development and makes integration possible for
all. In groups suited to their respective ages, we support children and adolescents in
their fantasy and creativity, give them space to play, paint, do craft and experiment
and thus promote their individual competences in a variety of areas.
The children in afternoon care are supported and accompanied by pedagogically
qualified personnel, child minders and trainees. We thus guarantee constant
care, regular completion of homework and the realization of the planned leisure
activities.
Collaboration with parents is of great importance to us. Regular exchange of
information enables us to provide for the needs of the children and adolescents.
If required, and only on the express instructions of parents, a member of our team
can contact the respective teachers in order to assist the children optimally in their
learning.
The Kinderfreunde-Afternoon Care remains closed during school holidays.
