TAP SEVA SUMIRAN March - April 2019

4

There is a provision for

Navratra fastings twice

a year at the time of

changing seasons. It has

body should, in a natural

way, be allowed to

excrete impurities the

wastages, which are

generally seen in the

form of cold, cough,

fever, constipation,

If proper way of fasting is

adopted at the right time,

one can remain free from

these diseases.

From the religious view,

Navratra is Maa Durga’s

festival and Maa Durga

is the symbol of power.

Her weapons are the

symbols of destruction

of vikaaras. Her riding a

lion is the symbol of

victory over all the

senses. So Maa Durga

destroys our vikaaras

and manifests vital

power in our body and

generates happiness and

wisdom. On the basis

religious aspects, there

is a tradition to fast in a

proper manner to gratify

Maa Durga. However, if

without understanding

the theory of fasting, one

does it, one is supposed

to be deceived of the

manifestation of the

power. So an intelligent

person is supposed

to cooperate in God’s

regulation of power

manifestation, by proper

fasting to keep the senses

under control.

aspect in view, His

Holiness Yogiji Maharaj

was kind to submit a

reasonable and gradual

way of fasting before

the devotees. We are

reproducing this proper

way of fasting for the

will get inspiration and

cooperation leading an

auspicious way of fasting.

Gradual fasting

Gradual fasting means

‘preparation for fasting’

and ‘preparation for

taking food after fasting’.

It means one should

neither start nor break

fasting all of a sudden.

It should be done in

a gradual way. If one

wants to fast on water,

then one is required to

discard grains from his

intakes and should be

on vegetables only for

two days before start of

fasting. Similarly, after

completion of fasting on

NAVRATRA FASTING

Page 3: English magazine mar-apr19 - IASS · TAP SEVA SUMIRAN March - April 2019 4 There is a provision for Navratra fastings twice a year at the time of changing seasons. It has body should,

water, one should be on

vegetables for three days.

Only after that, taking

grain-food should be

started. If this procedure

is adopted, there will

be no load on vital

power and power will be

manifested.

Reasonable fasting?

Fasting with

discriminative

understanding can

be called Reasonable

Fasting. A devotee should

know the

meaning of fasting. In

Hindi language, it is

called ‘Upvaas’, which

consists of two words,

namely, ‘Up’ and ‘Vaas’,

which means to come

nearer the God. It is also

necessary to know that

food only builds the body

and it cannot produce

energy. With this

understanding, if fasting

is done, only then it is

Reasonable Fasting. It

does not insist upon the

act, but upon thoughts

and feeling.

How a new devotee

should fast?

If a new devotee has

adopted the ideal food

noon, fruits and salads

between 12 and 1:30

p.m. and complete food

at night, he can easily

undertake proper fasting.

A devotee undertaking

time should give up only

grains and milk. He

should have fruit juices,

like carrot, cucumber,

orange, pomegranate

and pineapple etc in

daytime. After gap of

an hour or two, he may

eat seasonal fruits like

papaya, cucumber,

guava, apple and cheeku

etc and green vegetables

like pumpkin, spinach,

unripe papaya, cabbage,

tinda and parval etc at

night. Potatoes should

be avoided as far as

possible. Also, he should

use enema daily and take

bath both the times. He

should meditate thrice

a day, take rest properly

and distribute some

food.

During Navratra

fasting, it is said that

the mouth becomes

pungent and that

there is pain in teeth

and fatigue in body.

Why is it so?

Actually, during the

fasting, the vital power

becomes free from the

load of digesting the food

and it gets engaged in

cleansing the wastages

from the body. Above

mentioned conditions

TULADAAN

Human being often is

is obsessed with just

gathering things. He is

afraid to give and afraid

to share. Although the

fact is that he has to

give, whether happily

or unwillingly. He has

to give to the doctors,

when ill. He has to give

to lawyers, when trapped

in legal issues. If he is

ready to share willingly,

he need not give it

 !

"

problems and bad health

Tuladaan, mentioned in

ancient mythologies, is

an un-comparable yet

Tuladaan is a type of

practice which includes

the distribution of grains

(weighing equivalent to

your weight) along with

a worn cloth and some

dakshina for the priest.

This is given to either a

priest in temple or any

other food distribution

area.

The science behind the

practice can be explained

like this. Man is for whole

life, obsessed with food.

Even though food is

something that he takes

throughout his life, still

he is attached to it. Food,

as and when, not taken

in a balanced form, is the

biggest reason for bad

health and diseases. As

the Newton’s law say,

every action has opposite

and equal reaction, the

best way to get detached

with food is to distribute

and share it. This will in

turn reduce the demand

of food in body and the

importance of it in mind.

The reason for including

a worn cloth in this

distribution is that after

food, human is second

most attached with the

clothes he wear. Even

though he gets hundreds

of them, he is never

#

cloth instead of a new

one, helps in reducing

the attachment that

the person has with his

belongings and here

we do this practice along

with dakshina to the

priest, as a result, we will

notice improvement in

our health.

Tuladaan is considered

"

maintaining good health.

So a normal human

being should at least

practice this once a year,

if not more than that,

to maintain the desired

results in body and mind.

We often spend

thousands of rupees on

birthday celebrations

of our kids. Instead,

cutting on a tenth of

those expenses and

doing this tuladaan for

your child every year

on his birthday will

yield miraculous health

results for the child

throughout his life. If not

birthdays, you can choose

any of the auspicious

occasions or festivities

in the house to carry this

event. Our sadhaks, who

practice this regularly

have witnessed some

 "

results.

Contd. from page 5

are the symptoms

of cleansing of the

wastages. Uprising of

Pitta, the bile creates

pungency in mouth,

which creates fatigue

in body too. Vayu

vikaara creates pain

somewhere in body.

But enema relieves

these problems. The

devotee should make

Navratra fasting with

patience and trust.

At last, all problems

will go away and

permanent freedom

from body pains will

be gained.

There is no chakra in or

on the physical heart.

When we use the word -

“Heart Centre”, it means

the Anahat chakra on the

spine near the heart.

(a) Sri Aurobindo and

advised beginners to

concentrate on the

heart centre, the seat of

the soul or the psychic

being. This ensures

rapid progress in

devotion and conquest

over animal nature.

(b) In Sri Ram

charitmanas and Srimad

Bhagwat, devotees have

been advised at many

places to concentrate on

the form of the Lord in

the heart centre.

(c) Sri Krishna advised

his beloved devotee,

Uddhava, to meditate

on the full-bloom heart

MEDITATION ON CHAKRAS

There are two methods of

meditation:

1. By Relaxation

2. By Concentration

Within the method

of concentration, the

sadhak can meditate by

concentrating on various

names of God or on

various ‘Chakras’ (energy

centres).

In meditation by

concentration on

chakras, the mind is

concentrated on one or

various chakras. Follow-

ing are some of them:

Manipur Chakra - Navel centre

Yogis are known to have

acquired supernatural

powers by concentrating

on the navel centre.

Anahat Chakra - Heart centre

with the yellow seed

capsule.

(d) Some saints have

got good results by

meditating on the heart

centre of twelve crimson

petals with the rising

sun in the centre.

(e) Maharshi Raman

spoke of the heart

chakra as the seat of the

soul. He said that soul

was located about an

inch to the right of the

centre of the chest and

activated the physical

organ, the heart.

Tradition

places the location of

the soul to the centre or

left of the centre —

Sahastrar Chakra - Brahmrandhra

The Reverend ‘Yogi Ji’

advises his followers

to meditate on the

crown of the head, the

Sahastrar Chakra. Most

Yogis and Bhaktas have

meditated here in one

form or another.

Talking in modern

terminology, some Yogis

have said that two

glands in the cranium

are directly involved in

spiritual awakening —

the pituitary and the

pineal. The former is

located in a straight line

behind the Agya Chakra,

and below the spot still

uncovered with bone in

the infant.

The pineal lies still

further in the same

line but a little above,

near the upper end of

the cerebellum. It is

located in a straight

line from the centre

of the forehead. It has

the shape of a small

eye and works as an

aerial to receive cosmic

vibrations.

Concentration on

the spot between the

eyebrows stimulates the

pituitary which, in turn,

activates the pineal, said

to be the central point

of the Sahasrar. Above

the pineal, lies the place

where people in our

land have been growing

a tuft of hair.

In the above ways the

sadhak can meditate by

concentrating on either

or all of the centres in

sequential manner.

THE SCIENCE OF GIVING

Nature is continuously giving away something or the other without expecting anything in return. The sun has been our source of light and energy since eons but it never tires of giving. No matter how much sunshine it shares with us, its reserves never seem to deplete. Likewise, the earth has been constantly bearing plants for our survival, decade after decade, century after century. The trees around us continue to produce fruits and purify the air for us, without keeping a tab on how many fruits we pluck every season, or how much air-pollution we indiscriminately cause. Everything that constitutes Nature is busily giving and sharing then shouldn’t the same

be naturally expected from all human beings?

Human beings, however, have learnt to behave " they have been naturally programmed over centuries. That is a big reason for their unhappiness as they live in non-alignment with the benevolent energies of Nature. Instead of learning how to give gracefully from the sun, the earth, the trees, the sources of water and so on, human beings have cultivated the habit of seeking more and more, quite the opposite of what was naturally expected of them. In fact, the greed to acquire and hoard material things has increased so much that the basic values inherent in the act of giving seem to have been completely

overlooked.

Jesus Christ always preached that whoever gave away with devotion would get more and whoever tried to hoard, But human beings have become creatures yearning for more, endlessly. If a person earns hundred rupees, he doesn’t feel like parting with even a tenth of it (i.e. Rs. 10 as per the concept of dashansh) as Lord’s share. He feels tempted to preserve all his money and belongings as giving away would ‘reduce them’ at an apparent level. Unfortunately, what he doesn’t understand is that in the larger arithmetic of life, a person earns in the proportion in which he gives away without

Page 11: English magazine mar-apr19 - IASS · TAP SEVA SUMIRAN March - April 2019 4 There is a provision for Navratra fastings twice a year at the time of changing seasons. It has body should,

13

expecting anything in return (like Nature), and vice versa!

When a person practices the art of distributing, his energy expands joy, contentment and prosperity. The more he gives away, the more his energy level expands thus attracting more positivity, abundance and happiness for him. However, when a person and miserly way, the energy inside his heart contracts. Such a person is usually always-angry and constantly-worried type, who is miles away from being peaceful and harmonious in any surrounding. Unfortunately, most people fall in the latter category, often trying to save and gather

worldly goods till their last breath, whether they get to use what they earn or not! They are doomed to live a life %"discontentment as their *mindedness gets the better of them.

Many times people justify this save-till-you-drop attitude by saying it is all for their family and welfare of the future generations. But what is the guarantee that all of the savings will be well of the concerned person? Common sense would

tell us that among the billions of human beings alive on earth today, many of them would be descendants of erstwhile kings and queens. What happened to all their riches?

Where did all their inherited prosperity vanish?

Therefore, a better way of living a life full of abundance, fearlessness and joy is to cultivate a habit of sharing with others. This is a sure shot way of becoming a high-energy being as the person would always be focusing on the highest qualities a human being can possibly possess. This would make that person always live in a blissful state of paramanand (supreme joy).

QUESTIONS-ANSWERSQUESTIONS RELATED TO SADHANA ARE BEING

ANSWERED IN THIS COLUMN. PLEASE DO NOT

HESITATE IN RAISING MORE QUESTIONS AS IT

MIGHT HELP OTHER ASPIRANTS TOO.

Q.- Ques: Sri Ramcharit manas (Manas) states that even incurable diseases can be cured, how?

Ans: According to medical science, diseases are believed to be caused by germs. Modern science therefore focuses on discovering new medicines to eliminate these germs. However, Manas believes that there is only one single cause of any human sickness: accumulation of toxins in the body.

Germs naturally grow % that Manas subscribes to. For instance, if germs

are extracted and put in distilled water, they would not be able to survive in such a clean environment. Likewise, the body has to be kept clean and therefore disease-free by regular elimination of waste matter.

Another common example to explain this is the growth of worms over time in a closed can of wheat or rice at home. From where do these worms come? We all know not from outside. This example shows that any environment that is stagnating (therefore unclean) is a fertile ground for growth of germs, what

medical science calls as ‘infection’. So, any impure human body is bound to attract diseases depending upon the level of impurities it has acquired over time.

The principle of ‘Tap’ based on an ideal dietary system in Manas improving the dietary system to slowly purify the body and make it disease-free. American doctor Edward Dewey wrote an entire book on this theme titled ‘The No Breakfast Plan’. He has a record of curing hundreds of patients of medically incurable diseases by simply making them give up

their breakfast.

For treating incurable diseases according to Manas, the following steps need to be taken. Quit morning breakfast and start your day with raw food, i.e. fruits, sprouted moong dal and salad as early lunch and simultaneously reduce intake of cereals and pulses during the rest of the day. Take one complete meal comprising vegetables, cereals (wheat, rice etc.) and pulses at night.

In general, try to reduce foods that tend to stick to intestines like = % $ >and start consuming *sticky foods like green leaves (coriander, mint, curry leaf, bael leaves, Holy basil, drumstick leaves etc.), seasonal

fruits and vegetables etc. Try to increase intake of fruit juices and vegetable soups instead of depending solely on a solid diet that causes more strain on the digestive system. This way the system will and all disease-causing germs will get eradicated slowly as more and more waste matter will get eliminated through diet-change.

We are in touch with so many people whose ‘incurable’ TB was cured fully just by eliminating accumulated waste matter through this dietary system Likewise, many people could cure asthma and diabetes in just a few months, without taking any medicine for it.

So by following the secular principles of

‘Tap-Seva-Sumiran’ (i.e. ideal dietary system, sharing and distributing whatever one has materially, and meditation) one can come out of any sickness, old or new.

our chaturthansh fourth portion of total food consumed service of God) is still untouched in the morning, what should we do?

Ans: The Lord has said in Bhagwad Gita that if a devotee shares food with Him with love and devotion, He would surely come to receive it. So if your chaturthansh is not being consumed by a living being at night, you need to work more on the bhava (intention) with which you are performing the act of

so two meals a day is @ X adults, it is needed only for repair and maintenance of cells in the body, that too depending upon the level of physical exertion. For instance, a farmer or a casual labourer needs to eat more food compared to a person in a desk job as more physical activity means more cell breakage. In all cases, an adult should have one full meal a day because unnecessary strain is put on the body when a person eats more than what is required by the body.

Care should be taken that food gets consumed only after physical work, not before it. Meals should be followed by adequate rest to aid the process of digestion and not the other way round.

month, then set aside one-fourth of it as ‘food budget in service of God’, then distribute food purchased from this money but do it all with a good bhava in the heart.

Ques: Is the same quantity of food good for any person according to body-type?

Ans: Quantity of food consumed should depend upon age i.e. whether the person is below or above 25 years of age, and on the amount of physical labour he or she indulges in during the day. A very basic point to understand is that food is not the source of energy as the deep sleep or during meditation.

sharing.

Many a times, we get doubtful about who should be eating the food we put aside, human beings or animals, which kind of animals and so on. For instance, some people prefer feeding cows than say a dog or a pig. The point is that every living being is a representation of God so we should leave the food outside home with an intention and prayer that God, in any form, can have it and oblige us. When this feeling will strengthen, be sure that your chaturthansh will get consumed.

For some reason if daily sharing of food is not possible, then make it a habit of sharing food with devotion every month and in bulk. A simple way is to estimate quantity of food consumed by you per

RETURN TO NATURE

Despite constant search

for the perfect recipe for

well-being of humans

through ages, mutually

agreeable answers

continue to remain

illusive. Biologists,

physicists, doctors,

anthropologists and

scientists from other

schools of thought have

given it their all in trying

 $

for human beings to be

perfectly healthy. For

instance, they have all

ceaselessly pondered in

theory and experimented

in laboratories to

discover what the most

suitable diet regime

for humans could be.

Answers to this question

have changed from time

to time and continue to

get deliberated upon.

However, the situation

is not entirely bleak

either. The Bible says,

“The benevolent Lord

has provided everything

for us, including what

is most appropriate to

eat. He has given us

abundantly available

plants and trees that give

fruits and seeds that can

be re-sown.” As has been

very rightly pointed out

in the Bible, experience

of wise ones shows that

people who stay close

to Nature and try and

remain in alignment with

it, live far longer and

healthier lives. No matter

what science says or

suddenly discovers as a

‘new principle’ for health,

people who have lived in

constant alignment with

Nature have proved the

Bible’s claim in reality.

Even if one looks

around at the lives of

beings from the animal

kingdom, we would see

that all of them live in

with Nature. They

eat what is naturally

available to them, and

even then, they know

what to avoid even if

present in vicinity like

poisonous plants etc. For

instance, a baby sparrow

knows what it has to eat

the moment the mother

sparrow puts it out of the

A fawn starts eating

a baby squirrel starts

looking for nuts and a

baby fox starts searching

for mice when it gets

hungry. Who guides

these animals about

eating preferences? Like

animals, human beings

also have an intuition,

and we need to practice

cultivating trust on the

inner voice with regard

to diet and well-being.

In the past, much before

humans started clearing

forests for establishing

industries or houses, they

were naturally provided

with a wide variety of

fruits and vegetables

to eat, without them

having to grow anything.

Z"

  "

natural vegetation,

including fruits and

nuts, depending upon

season, soil and climate

type. Gradually, as man

became ‘modern’ he

started interfering with

natural cycles of food

production. In place of

eating raw and fresh food

in its natural form, man

started eating it cooked,

thus deteriorating its

quality.

Even then, every person

should try to return

to Nature as much

as his or her capacity

progressively allows. For

instance, a person can

make his diet as simple

as possible to begin

with. He can start eating

more of uncooked food

compared to cooked food

by focusing more on raw

salads and fruits. That

way, he will be closer to

Nature because he will be

eating in alignment with

the way Nature designed

him to eat.

Additionally, he can

avoid food altogether

when feeling unwell.

That way too, he is in

alignment with what

Nature seeks of him

at that time. Fasting

during sickness is only

logical because the bodily

function of digestion

consumes maximum

energy of a person. When

he saves that energy,

then the body’s energy

naturally gets directed

inwards, towards

healing the person. If

you notice carefully,

animals stop eating

when they are unwell.

As Nature would have

it, they come out of the

sickness fully recovered,

without having to resort

Page 19: English magazine mar-apr19 - IASS · TAP SEVA SUMIRAN March - April 2019 4 There is a provision for Navratra fastings twice a year at the time of changing seasons. It has body should,

to any medicines at all.

Human beings, on the

other hand, are busily

stressing themselves

out, over-eating cooked

food which is heavy, oily,

spicy and stale. It is no

surprise that humans

 "

so many diseases and

associated miseries

as their basic lifestyle

becomes increasingly

unnatural. What

makes this worse is the

increasing dependence

on intoxicants like

alcohol and cigarettes

and stimulants like tea

 "

The whole notion of

‘taste’ has undergone a

sea change over time.

What people from the

older generations found

tasty, namely fruits

and vegetables in their

natural form, has become

increasingly ‘bland’ and

‘boring’ in the present

day and age. However,

there are people who

still enjoy eating raw

seasonal fruits instead

of making jams and

jellies out of them or

making salads from raw

vegetables instead of

frying them with spices

for added ‘taste’. It is

no wonder that people

from the former category

remain healthier and

happier compared to

the latter ones. A simple

reason for that is when

we spare the body the

agony of having to digest

spicy and heavy food, it

naturally functions better

Raw food is alive with

don’t take too much

energy from the body

to get assimilated while

the brain has to secrete

excessive acid and juices

to digest the cooked and

fried foods, which are

consumed in greater

quantities than the

body’s digestive capacity

or need.

Ideally, people doing

more of physical labour

should eat more cereals

besides fruits and

vegetables as the wear

and tear in their body

is more. Yet, people

with sedentary lifestyle

depend so much on

cereal-based foods

that tend to stick to

the intestines and are

[

eliminate compared to

*

vegetables, which are

best when eaten raw.

Thus, in order to be

closer to nature the

easiest way is to eat

food in its natural form

and key being eating :

seasonal, regional in raw

form.

Like human beings this earth and all planet are born and die one day. The earth has circulation in the form of water which gets evaporated and then moves to other areas, where it causes growth of plants. Plants can be compared with our epithelial cells, which grow, develop and dry, like layers of skin. Animals on this earth are like bacterias, viruses and body cells i.e., RBC, WBC, platelets and other Z""*%" Our body cells also live "survive for variable periods. One animal kills the other, like the state of our body where ‘K’ lymphocyte

and granulocyte may kill infected cells or organism to keep our body free from diseases.

We have a lot of harmless bacterias known as commensals in our body. When an organism grows in our body, it may survive till the population of that pathogen is small. Once this population exceeds the tolerable limits, our defence comes into play. The leukocytes and antibodies tend to control the pathogens to protect our body from

undue damage. If that fails we take drugs or use other methods, so that pathogens may be killed. If the population of pathogens exceeds certain limit, it may be fatal to the host also.

We must understand that same is the situation of nature. Human race was also like commensals on this earth, when its demands were met by things produced on the earth surface by natural process. Now our demands and population both have increased and \ % % %ore, gas etc. We have made earth surface hot and behaved like pathogens. If we do not change our ways, mother nature will use its resources to teach us

a lesson, by way of calamities. The other thing which may happen is that, we may multiply more, become more pathogenic and ultimately destroy the earth, the planet which is our abode and on which we are living. Remember, our race can survive only if this planet is alive and healthy.

Every creature has adopted a particular ways of living, food habits and modes of protection or shelter, but our human race is daily changing its ways of living and is constantly eating resources of our nature, not bothering what will be its long term ";development has made people fearless and cruel towards fellow persons and other creatures. Members of almost all species live in harmony

and care for their fellow members. Even if there is shortage of food, the vegetarian animals like deer or goats do not start killing each other. They all move in search of food. They generally live in herds and protect each other from various dangers. The man on the other hand tries to snatch others bread. A person may not hesitate to kill others for his own % his personal pleasure and can commit any crime.

Apart from atrocities on our own race, we also try to kill animals just for our taste. Some @ give pleasure to one individual.

In the name of teaching or research, thousands of innocent animals are % +

These dissections have never been useful in life after passing that class. I have asked hundreds of persons, regarding usefulness of such foolish experiments and always the reply has been in negative. The similar dissections are carried out in grade 10th, 12th, graduation and post graduation and even in medical course where animals are killed for nothing.

One must know why we all do not deplore such cruel and useless experiments, where life of some poor nothing? Why do we not

realise their pain and torture? Why don’t we understand the simple law of nature that every action has an equal and opposite reaction?

+ others and torture innocent creatures, nature will prosecute us and give us pain. It is quite possible that the increase in human diseases and other " such unlawful actions. One of which is to %kill so many innocent animals, either for experiments or for taste.

We must understand that every such criminal act is seen by nature. Do not feel nature is blind or it is kind and will forgive us. Nature always gives us a long rope. It is up to us, how

to use it.

Our mother nature has a lot of love for all of us. She gives us so much without our demand, till we behave like good children. She can also punish us if that is required. If we become proud of our achievements we shall be taught a lesson by nature.

If a portion of body becomes diseased it has to be treated. Some time treatment may be surgery, in which that portion is even removed. If a parasite in our body produces necrosis that parasite has to be killed. Why should we presume that mother nature will not react to our misdeeds and will go on tolerating ]Small calamities are the reactions. We are frequently

getting earthquakes, % epidemics. We often cry due to such happenings, but do not take a lesson from them. These are corrective measures of nature for our misconduct and transgression.

Nature often reminds us of our limitations by teaching us small lessons but we have become almost deaf and blind, due to our achievements, that is why we are hurting and harming it daily for our petty gains. We have changed atmosphere by pollution. Lithosphere is being damaged by dams, drilling and removing its epithelial cover, the forests. Hydrosphere has been made inhabitable for many creatures. How long can the nature tolerate it?
