PIBT

PIBT provides alternative pathways to ECU for students who may not qualify for direct entry to a degree program and are looking for a supportive learning environment. PIBT bridges the gap to ensure students reach their goal of being an ECU graduate.

PIBT’s administration and pathway programs are located on ECU’s Joondalup campus. The Joondalup campus is within a five minute walk from the Joondalup train station, where a free shuttle bus service is available to take you directly to the campus. PIBT offers pathway programs in business, communications and creative industries,

hotel management, science (computing / IT), science (engineering studies) and science (health studies).

PIBT’s English language (ELICOS) programs are held on the ECU Mount Lawley campus which is only five kilometres from the Perth city centre.

PIBT ensures that all students have the opportunity to maximise their full study potential and achieve the best possible education outcomes. Our fully qualified academic staff have a wealth of expertise in education, both locally and internationally, and extensive university teaching experience.

Since PIBT began offering pathways to ECU in 1994, over 6,200 Australian and international PIBT students have gone on to complete bachelor degrees, with many progressing further to complete masters degrees.

Academic English Program

The Academic English program is designed for students who plan to study at an Australian university or who are interested in developing their academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This program is taught on ECU’s Mt Lawley campus.

Who is this program for?• Students who need to prepare

for university-level study

• Students who have not met the minimum level of English competency for entry to their chosen academic program

• Students who wish to improve their writing and reading skills

Program content• Essay writing and reading skills

• Academic English language

• Academic discussion and presentation skills

• Listening skills for academic study

• Study skills for university

Program benefitsAcademic English students enrol into multiples of 10 week blocks based on their current English language level and the required level for entry into PIBT or ECU programs.

This model provides maximum flexibility for students to progress to the next level as they gain proficiency. Following successful completion of the required level, students will not be required to take an English test for entry into PIBT / ECU (excluding program where IELTS is compulsory, such as Nursing). Students need to pass the required level to progress on to their academic program.

Students have the opportunity to develop their language skills and enhance their studies in higher education. The program focuses on a mixture of communication skills and academic study skills.

PIBT’s Academic English program can be packaged with PIBT’s pathway programs. For more information about PIBT’s pathway programs visit www.pibt.wa.edu.au/courses

AssessmentStudents are assessed regularly. These assessments are designed to measure each student’s English ability in a variety of skill areas needed for university study. The pass mark for each 10 week block of Academic English is 65%.

IELTS Test Centre at PIBT

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures students’ ability to communicate in English through listening, reading, writing and speaking. It is designed for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication.

With over 2.2 million tests taken every year, IELTS is one of the most popular English language tests in the world, setting the standard in integrity, research and innovation. PIBT is an official IELTS test centre in Western Australia and offers IELTS tests at ECU’s Mt Lawley and Joondalup campuses.

Preparation Course for IELTS*To help candidates become more confident with the IELTS testing format and achieve their full potential, PIBT has developed the Preparation Course for IELTS. This course is available to PIBT students and the general public, with a start date every month.

The Preparation Course for IELTS is held for two hours each evening, twice a week for four weeks. Note: the final session is split into academic and general writing sessions to cater for students’ needs. Students attend for one hour in the final class (15 hours in total). Participants will be given tips and strategies for approaching the test in a positive way to achieve the best results.

The course is run by experienced English language teachers who can answer questions participants may have about the test.

For more information about IELTS testing at PIBT, follow the IELTS links at pibt.wa.edu.au.

Study tours

PIBT has extensive experience in designing and organising tours. PIBT study tours combine English language tuition with cultural and leisure activities in Western Australia. The English programs are delivered by fully qualified teachers. Students will develop communicative and academic skills in a way that is interactive and builds confidence.

For tours of 10 weeks or more, study tour students may join English classes with other international students. However, classes are in 10 week blocks and students are unable to join or finish at any time except for the start and end date of that class.

For tours less than 10 weeks, closed classes are an option. Students have their own fully qualified teacher but will not mix with other classes or students. For this to be cost effective, a minimum 15 students is recommended. The English tuition component can be delivered in full-day or part-day modules, or a mixture of both. Classes can commence at any time except during PIBT study breaks.

Cost options include:

• English tuition

• accommodation

• airport transfers

• tours and excursions

• orientation and placement test

• a graduation ceremony, or certificate presentation only.

AccommodationHomestay accommodation, which involves staying with an Australian host family, is the most popular choice as it offers a unique cultural experience for study tour group members while they improve their English communication skills.

Visit pibt.wa.edu.au/study-tours for more information and the online application form.

* These courses are not available to student visa holders as their principal course. Note: Study tour programs are for non-student-visa holders only. Age: students under the age of 18 years are at the discretion of PIBT’s College Director/Principal.

Supporting you while you study

PIBT provides many additional services for students, including educational, personal and career counselling.

OrientationDay 1 for new students is orientation day. This consists of:

• an official welcome by the Academic Director or a representative

• an information session on living in Australia

• a tour of facilities and classrooms.

It is essential that you arrive by 8.30am for your PIBT orientation on your first day. This will be on the date specified in your PIBT letter of offer. The information provided at orientation will be crucial to your success in your academic pathway.

If you are unable to arrive at orientation on time you must notify us as soon as possible. No refund will be given for missed classes. It is therefore very important that you arrive on time for your orientation.

Preparing to study at PIBTWhen you come to Australia, you will experience many differences to your home country. It is helpful to know some of the different aspects of life in Australia so you can plan effectively for this important transition.

To find pre-departure information that will help you prepare for living in Australia and studying at PIBT, visit pibt.wa.edu.au and follow the link to ‘Pre-departure’.

AccommodationThere are many accommodation options in Mt Lawley and surrounding areas, including homestay, rental and shared accommodation.

PIBT uses the services of two companies to assist students with accommodation arrangements WA Homestay Network and Perth Student Accommodation. Accommodation requests should be sent directly to the provider you wish to use. Please visit their websites to find out more information and to complete an application form:

• WA Homestay Network: homestaynetwork.org

• Perth Student Accommodation: perthstudentaccommodation.com

Homestay

Homestay is a popular accommodation option for international students in Perth. Homestay hosts may be families, couples, single people or single parents with children. All hosts have passed police checks and have been selected to provide good quality facilities and also meals if required. Homestay hosts have specifically requested a student to stay with them, which means that every student will be made to feel welcome in their new environment.

English is the language spoken by homestay hosts, which will help students improve their language skills. Hosts will also help with day-to-day issues such as transport, banking and shopping. The homestay experience provides a friendly environment where international students can live, relax and study in comfort and security.

On-campus accommodation

PIBT students have access to on-campus accommodation at the Mt Lawley Student Village, which features five and six bedroom apartments just a two minute walk from the university. The apartments are modern and fully furnished, with private bedrooms, bathrooms, large kitchens and spacious lounge areas, so students will have plenty of space to hang out with friends. The on-site facilities include a pool, café/convenience store, sound lounge, e-library, study zones and shared laundry. With resident assistants on hand to organise events and activities, you will find plenty to do and lots of ways to meet new friends. For more information and to download an application form, visit mystudentvillage.com/au/ecuvillage.

Off-campus housing

Off-campus options include house or unit/apartment rentals. Costs may vary depending on the size, quality and location of the accommodation. In most cases you will be required to sign a six or 12 month contract and pay a month’s rent in advance. A refundable deposit (bond) is usually also required in the event of any damage caused during the rental period.
