Personal Statement Structure
• Reviewing examples from yesterday’s notes…
• Past, Present and Future! (Include them ALL in your statement, and connect them to you and your goals!)
Sample Outline 1(each pt a paragraph)• I want to do X in my career. (future)• A was the first time I learned about X. (past)• B and C prepared me academically and
practically for X. (past)• I believe your opportunity will help me
accomplish X because (present)• While pursuing this opportunity, I hope to
specialize in D. (present)
(A, B and C could be the past events that you’ve written about in your pre-writing, etc.)
Sample Outline 2• I am applying to your program because of A,
B, and C opportunities (present)• While in your program, I would like to work
with X, Y and Z faculty members. (present)• I am prepared for this program because of D
and F experiences. (past)• This program will help me to reach my goal of

What are you being graded on TODAY?
• Rough Outline – sentence format like today’s examples (indicate past-present-future)
• Participation Grade – on task and productive! (losing points for electronics, excessive talking, etc.)
