General information
◆ This is a 3-credit service learning subject open to degree students.
General information
◆ A subject to be offered in semester 1 +2, 2020-21. Suitable for students who want to:
▪ strengthen their English oral presentation skills
▪ experience teaching English to local primary children
▪ serve the less advantaged children
◆ Help students develop the knowledge, language and skills needed to plan, organise and deliver effective presentations in different contexts
◆ Provide students with opportunities to address challenges in preparing and delivering presentations in realistic situations
◆ Enhance students’ sense of social/ civic responsibility
Objectives
◆ Develop the curriculum and teaching materials of an Englishspeaking workshop for local primary school children
◆ Present the designed materials and facilitate Englishspeaking classes for the school children

◆ Lectures and seminars in semester 1 (26 hours)
◆ 3 meetings/ visits to the school/ community centres in sem1
◆ An intensive speaking workshop between 4 – 16 January2021, PolyU semester break
Subject components
• The service is a must-attended component of the subject.
• Our default position is to render the teaching service face-to-face at school / the community centre. Students need toattend the service in person if F2F teaching takes place.
• If F2F teaching is not possible, we will do so online.

•serve as tutors in an English Speaking Workshop known as Connect Hong Kong
•Conduct English classes 4 times a week for 2 weeks for elementary school children* attending a local primary school or after-school day care service at local community centres
*these children are usually from low-income, single-parent or new immigrant families.

◆ Attend an interview in week 1 or 2 during class time
◆ Students suitable for this subject will be notified by email within a few days
Conclusion
This subject is about language learning, but goes beyond language learning. It is about learning, application and serving the community.
