The word algebra comes from the Arabic language and much of its methods ("al-jabr "restoration الجبر)from Arabic/Islamic mathematics. Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (c. 780–850) wrote The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing, which established algebra as a mathematical discipline that is independent of geometry and arithmetic. Algebra is one of the main branches of pure mathematics, together with geometry, analysis, topology, combinatorics, and number theory.
