ENGLISH SUMMER SCHOOL

The British International School in Phuket has been running successful

English summer camps since the inception of the school in 1996. A number

of our current / past students have attended the summer school with a limited

amount of English skills. Students that wish to join BIS will be required to write

an entrance test. If they pass the test and are accepted they will often be

required to take additional ESL lessons to further improve their English skills.

Students written, reading and communications skills will improve rapidly when

they progress to the mainstream English classes at BIS.

FOREWORD

It gives me great pleasure to welcome your family to

the British International School (BIS), one of the fi nest

academic learning institutions in South East Asia.

On this exciting programme, I believe we create a very

special learning environment for young people in our

care. Your child will learn a great deal of English and

experience living in an international community, helping

them to learn more about themselves and about other

people.

We appoint well qualifi ed experienced English native speaking educators

that will ensure that we meet our aims and objectives. Many of our staff have

worked on a number of camps at BIS.

The Summer School promises to be a fun fi lled action camp where students

will make many new friends. They will learn to improve their English in a fun

way through classroom lessons, various activities and outdoor excursions. Our

Thai assistant teachers and student counselors will ensure that the students

understand all instructions clearly.

After fresh air, good food, lots of activities and fun, children return home

healthy and refreshed from the English Summer School. They are able to look

back on time of fun, friendship and learning in a healthy, natural environment

and this helps them to return to their studies with renewed enthusiasm and

determination.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 LOCATION

The camp is held at the British International School campus on the beautiful

southern island of Phuket. It is situated in thirty-six acres of private land

surrounded by wooded hills and overlooking the Andaman Sea. It is a short

fi ve-minute drive to the main road. Phuket International Airport is 25 km away

and Phuket Town is only 8 km.

1.2 FACILITIES

We offer some of the best teaching and sports facilities in the region; fully

air-conditioned teaching block equipped with all the modern technology, fully

equipped sports hall, 50m and 25m swimming pool, large playing fi elds,

modern boarding houses and beautifully landscaped gardens.

1.3 HEALTHY AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Within the school great measures are taken to ensure the health and safety

of the children. Your child will be under the constant care and attention of

experienced staff from the moment of arrival until s/he leaves for home.

Particular attention is paid to safety. For example no student is allowed in the

swimming pool or out of school grounds without a member of staff.

There is 24-hour security and medical supervision provided and in an

emergency a hospital is easily accessible. There is always responsible staff

around the boarding area that can easily be contacted in case of emergency

or if problems arise.

If parents or guardian wish to take their child out during ESS, we require an

e-mail at least one day before, confi rming your intentions. Boarding staff must

be notifi ed when leaving and returning. There is a sign out & in book in each

boarding house and a boarding pass will be issued to the student. We will not

allow students off the premises with friends or relatives without parents written

permission from the parents. Parents should not take their children our during

class time. Parents must understand this is a very important procedure to

follow.

1.4 BASIC OUTLINE

The camp is divided into two separate divisions; junior division for ages 8-11

and a senior division for ages 12-15. All divisions have similar activities.

However, all are developed to be relevant and of interest in accordance

with their age group. Within both divisions there are three different sections;

English as a Second Language (ESL), Extra Curricula Activities (ECA) and

excursions.

1.5 OUR AIMS

We aim to create an unforgettable experience in an international environment

focusing on new and challenging assignments to stimulate young developing

minds. Students are continuously exposed to the English language

in activities, which promotes the need for leadership, teamwork and

individualism. For many, the camp will be the fi rst time living away from home

and living with different people from around the region.

1.6 MEALS

Within a short walking distance from the Boarding Houses is the refectory

where buffet style breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are served. A choice

of Thai, western and vegetarian food is always available. During all meals

drinking water is available. Snacks are provided in the boarding houses in the

evening. At the weekend on ‘All Day’ excursions food is provided outside the

school.

1.7 CLOTHING

As it is always humid in Phuket, children should bring loose fi tting clothing.

The school provides 4x English Summer School T-shirts that should be worn

during the day. Students are welcome to wear casual clothing during the

evening. On off campus excursions students are required to wear their camp

shirts.

Books, magazines, comics, iPods, games, sporting equipment, etc. can also

be brought. Please ensure that all property is clearly marked.

Do not let your child bring any luxury items and/or expensive phones. It is

advisable not to bring along iPads and laptops. Mobile phones may be used

after hours during the Sports and Adventure Camp and will be collected before

bedtime by the Houseparent. Please note that the school is not liable for

the loss of belongings on or off campus. There is a free daily laundry service

provided and on arrival children will be provided with pens to mark their

clothing and a laundry basket. The laundry number will correspond with their

enrollment number and boarding house. Laundry will be collected at each

boarding house and will be washed, ironed and returned to the children within

two days. The last day for laundry will be two days before the end of ESS.

Please do not mark any clothing before coming onto the camp. We will provide

a special marker pen and a code.

2. BOARDING

2.1 FACILITIES

Great care is taken to ensure that children living in the boarding houses are

well looked after. Comfort in the boarding houses is provided through the

excellent facilities that exist. Each house is fully air-conditioned and possesses

spacious rooms for sleeping, studying and socializing in. These rooms are all

equipped with necessary features to create a feeling of home for everyone in

the house. In each house there is a video and television with Cable TV. There

is a pool and table-tennis table for light exercise in the evening or students can

spend time with private study on the computers. There is a microwave and

toaster available for students to prepare snacks.

2.2 BOARDING STAFF

In each house there are two House Parents, one Thai Assistant House Parent

and Student Counselors. They all live in the boarding houses and share the

responsibility of looking after the children throughout the day. The Boarding

Staff serve many roles as parents, teachers, tutors, counselors, coaches and

supervisors. They take on those roles with one objective in mind and that is to

benefi t the students during their stay and to promote a positive development.

2.3 BEDTIME

Children will be required to go to bed at a certain time, and this will be set

depending on their ages. It is very important for children to get a good night’s

sleep, so they will be able to perform to the best of their ability throughout

the following day. Bedtime at weekends will be slightly later because of non-

academic lessons during the weekend.

2.4 TELEPHONE

There are telephones for incoming calls in each boarding house. In addition

we also have a mobile telephone number for each boarding house. It is

advisable for all parents to arrange a time with their child when they will

contact them. The best time is after 8:30 pm. It may be diffi cult to contact them

during the day, however a message can be left at the school offi ce Tel. 076

238-711. If there is an emergency, contact the SAC Director or SAC Secretary

at the phone numbers shown below.

2.5 HOUSE BANK

There is a house bank set up for the children in each of the boarding houses.

All money is kept in a safe within the house offi ce. The children are required

to put all money into the house bank. They can access their money during the

evening by asking the House Parents. Normally, a small amount of spending

money is required at the weekends or when they go on an excursion.

The recommended amount of money to be brought is 1,000 Baht per week.

This money can be used for extra shopping the children wish to do during

the camp. All the money that is withdrawn is kept on record and signed for by

the children. If there is any money remaining at the end of the camp it will be

refunded to the child/parent when they leave.

Students should not leave large amounts of money in their rooms. The school

will not be held liable for loss of any money.

3. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

3.1 INTRODUCTION

All ESL lessons are taught by experienced native speakers in small groups

of no more than 15 students. Students are placed in the appropriate group

according to their level of English. There are two one- and- a- half hour

lessons on average per day.

Our qualifi ed teachers use effective modern techniques to create interesting,

enjoyable lessons. There is a careful balance of activities designed to improve

the students’ grammar and vocabulary while practicing their reading, writing,

listening and speaking. All levels use pair and group work to maximize the

opportunity to speak, project work to extend and practice English outside

class, games, songs, role-play, computers and video to make the lessons

varied and fun.

The course has been specially designed for the children’s needs. As the class

sizes are small, students will receive the individual attention required, allowing

teachers to concentrate on areas that need developing and design class

activities that strengthen language skills. Lessons will not just be restricted to

the class, students will be able to use our extensive library to develop reading

skills, our computer lab to produce pages for the magazine or our stage to

perform a drama.

3.2 PLACEMENT TEST

At the beginning of the English Summer Camp (ESC), we give a test to place

students in the correct ESL group, which will benefi t them during their stay.

The test will be held on the fi rst Sunday and students are placed into various

ability groups.

BIS organizes an Entrance Test for parents who wish their children to enter

the school in September. The test is held on Thursday 25th July and a fee of

5,000 THB is charged. Please note :- Students will not be able to write the test

if the fee is not paid in advance. If you wish your child to take the Entrance

Test please contact the ESC Secretary or Marketing Department or Khun

3.3 ESS MAGAZINE/CD ROM

All students will have the opportunity to contribute to the English Summer

School Magazine. The completed magazine/CD ROM will be given to the

children at the end of the camp. The children will be able to use their computer

and artistic skills to produce a great looking magazine to keep as a memento

of their time here.

3.4 ENGLISH SUMMER SCHOOL AWARD CEREMONY

There will be an Award Ceremony on Friday afternoon the 26th July in

the auditorium on the fi rst fl oor. All parents are invited to join the awards

presentation. Please inform the Camp coordinator if you wish to attend the

awards ceremony.

It is important for students to remain until the end of the Award Ceremony to

receive their report, certifi cate, magazine, CD-Rom and photograph. Parents

can take their child away after the ceremony, but please notify a member of

staff before doing so.

3.5 END OF ESL PROGRAMME

After completion, we aim to have developed your child’s English language

ability, personal growth, independence, and confi dence and given them new

goals and aspirations to pursue in life.

All children who attend receive an attendance certifi cate and a short report

on their academic performance. A group photograph of students in their ESL

class is also included in the course fees.

3.6 SAMPLE OUTLINE OF ESL LEVEL 1

Our English Curriculum is based on the Cambridge Young Learners

Programme.

Speaking & Listening

After this level, students will be expected to:

• Listen for the gist of short explanations

• Follow single step instructions

• Listen and respond to requests for personal information

• Speak clearly to be heard and understood

• Make requests using appropriate terms

• Ask questions to obtain specifi c information

• Speak and listen in simple exchange

Reading & Writing

After this level, students will be expected to:

• Recognize the letters of the alphabet

• Possess a limited, meaningful vocabulary

• Decode simple, regular words

• Write the letters of the alphabet

• Use written words or phrases to record or present information

• Construct a simple sentence

• Punctuate a simple sentence with a capital letter and full stop

• Spell correctly some personal keywords and familiar words

4. EXTRA CURRICULA ACTIVITIES (ECA)

4.1 INTRODUCTION

A choice of supervised sports and social activities is arranged throughout the

day. The emphasis is on fun, within a safe, supervised environment, so that

the children make friends, develop confi dence and have fun! Separate groups

are organized for younger and older children as appropriate.

The school has two sports halls, tennis courts, sports fi elds and two swimming

pools. Sports include basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, tennis,

cricket and T-ball. Children have also the opportunity to be involved in special

academic lessons, which include computers, science, art & craft, eco-studies

and music & drama.

4.2 WEDNESDAY OPTION ACTIVITIES

On Wednesdays the students will go on afternoon excursions.

4.3 SPECIAL ACTIVITIES & TOURNAMENTS

During ESS there will be various tournaments and competitions. Prizes are

often given as incentives. The main aim is to promote fun, team spirit and

sportsmanship.

4.4 WEEKEND EXCURSIONS

Excursions are a very important part of ESS and although there are no

formal ESL lessons during the weekend. English is the main medium for

communication and students gain exposure to this in the “real” world in

situations, which are very diffi cult to simulate in the class. At all times students

are supervised by BIS staff and organizers of the activities. We are very aware

of parents’ concerns and we take appropriate action to ensure the safety and

well being of all children.

4.5 EVENING EXCURSIONS

These take place after dinner and students return before their appropriate

bedtime. Again all of these trips are supervised by our staff and all entrance

fees are free to ESS students.

5. OTHER INFORMATION

5.1 ITEMS PROVIDED ON THE ENGLISH SUMMER SCHOOL

All books and stationary including: paper, pens, pencils and folders. Each child

will also be given 4 camp (attend ¾ weeks) T-shirts that must be worn while

during activities and excursions. During the evening students may wear casual

clothing.

5.2 VISITING TIMES FOR PARENTS

Parents are welcome to visit the school after 6 pm. The students have free

time during the evenings. This would be good times to make arrangements

to meet children at the school. If for any reason children are required to leave

the school grounds, an E-mail or written permission must be presented and

approved by the House Parents or the Director of the course. The parents or

guardians must sign them out in the boarding house while a member of staff is

present before leaving school grounds. Students will not be permitted to leave

with friends or relatives if parents have not e-mailed the house parent or the

Director. This is to ensure the safety of your child. (Please see programme of

activities when students are free).

5.3 SCHOOL RULES

General Conduct

Students are expected to:

1. Act responsibly at all times.

2. Be courteous and considerate to others.

3. Be punctual for classes and activities.

4. Refrain from dropping litter.

5. Keep noise levels low enough to avoid bothering others.

6. Not consume food and drinks in the Main Teaching Block.

7. Not to be over affectionate with a partner.

8. No smoking or alcohol is permitted on campus.

9. No bullying or fi ghting is permitted.

10. We expect all students to be truthful and honest.

11. Boys are not allowed to enter the girls boarding houses. (Same rule for the

girls)

12. No foul language is permitted.

If a student’s commits a serious offence, parents will be notifi ed and

arrangements will be made to send the student home. For minor offences

students will be punished appropriately.

Appearance

1. Students must wear SAC T-shirts to all classes, activities and excursions.

2. They must wear sports shoes to sports activities.

3. Students may wear casual clothing during the evenings (not on excursions).

Bounds

1. Students must not go beyond the school perimeter unless a member of staff

accompanies them.

2. The boys must not go into the Girls’ houses and the girls must not go into

the Boys’ houses.

Going off Campus on Excursions

1. Students must always stay within the designated area.

2. Students must always be in small groups. They must never be on their own

while away from school.

3. Students must always be on time when leaving or returning to school.

4. Students must always ensure that they wear their safety belts when being

transported.

* If students fail to comply with the rules and regulations parents will be

contacted and students will be asked to leave. No refund will be given.

5.4 SECURITY

We have implemented a high security procedure policy at our school. When

visiting the school please ensure that you have your identifi cation card with

you. Visitors will be issued with a BIS visitors pass by our security personnel.

6. TRAVEL INFORMATION

6.1 AIR TRAVEL TO PHUKET

We would prefer if all children traveling by air from Bangkok to make travel

plans easier.

We arrange a “Meet and Assist” representative at the airport gate at the

start of the programme (1st July 2013). In all cases, children will be met at

Phuket International Airport by member of English Summer Camp staff and

transported to the campus.

เสื้อผ้า และการแต่งกาย นักเรียนทุกคนจะได้รับเสื้อแคมป์ 4 ตัว เพื่อใส่ในระหว่างเข้าค่าย สําหรับเสื้อผ้าและเครื่องแต่งกายที่โรงเรียนแนะนําให้นักเรียนเตรียมมาด้วยได้แก่ 1. เสื้อยืดหรือเสื้อเชิ้ต 4 ตัว2. กางเกงขาสั้น 4 ตัว3. กางเกงขายาว 2 ตัว4. รองเท้าผ้าใบ 1 คู่ รองเท้าแตะ 1 คู่ รองเท้าลําลอง 1 คู่5. ถุงเท้า 4 คู่6. ผ้าเช็ดตัว 2 ผืน7. ชุดว่ายน้ํา 1 ชุด8. หมวก 1 ใบ9. ชุดชั้นใน 5 ชุด10. ชุดสําหรับใส่นอน 2 ชุด11. กระเป๋า / เป้ 1 ใบ12. เครื่องใช้ส่วนตัว เช่น แชมพู สบู่ แปรงสีฟัน ยาสีฟัน เป็นต้น

ทางโรงเรียนมีบริการซักรีดสําหรับนักเรียนทุกคน เมื่อนักเรียนมาถึงหอพัก ครูประจําหอจะแนะนําให้นักเรียนเขียนรหัสประจําตัวไว้ที่ด้านใน หรือ ป้ายยี่ห้อของเสื้อผ้า และแนะนําขั้นตอนการนําผ้าส่งซัก โดยนักเรียนต้องนําเสื้อผ้าที่ใส่แล้วลงในตระกร้าที่ทางโรงเรียนจัดไว้ให้ และนํามาวางไว้บริเวณชั้นล่างของห้องพัก นักเรียนสามารถนําของใช้ส่วนตัวอื่น ๆ มาได้เช่น หนังสือการ์ตูน เกมส์ เป็นต้น โดยนักเรียนต้องทําเครื่องหมายหรือเขียนชื่อไว้เพื่อเป็นสัญลักษณ์ และดูแลรักษาสิ่งของของตนเอง เนื่องจากโรงเรียนจะไม่รับผิดชอบหากสิ่งของของนักเรียนชํารุด หรือสูญหาย นักเรียนสามารถนําโทรศัพท์มือถือมาใช้ได้ หลังเวลาเลิกเรียนหรือหลังกิจกรรม ในเวลากลางคืนให้นักเรียนฝากโทรศัพท์มือถือไว้กับอาจารย์ประจําหอพัก

การดูแลเรื่องสุขภาพและความปลอดภัยของนักเรียน โรงเรียนจัดให้มีพยาบาลคอยดูแลเรื่องสุขภาพและเจ้าหน้าที่รักษาความปลอดภัยดูแลตรวจตราความเรียบร้อยตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง สามารถติดต่อได้ที่หมายเลขโทรศัพท์ 076 335 555 ต่อ 2330

เงินใช้จ่ายส่วนตัวและของมีค่า ทางโรงเรียนแนะนําให้นักเรียนนําเงินใช้จ่ายส่วนตัวมาจํานวนไม่เกิน 1,000 บาท ต่อ 1 สัปดาห์ นักเรียนสามารถฝากเงินและของมีค่าไว้ในตู้เซฟของหอพักหรือที่เรียกว่า House Bank ซึ่งครูประจําหอจะเป็นผู้บันทึกรายงานการฝากและการเบิกเงินของนักเรียน โดยนักเรียนจะได้รับเงินและของที่ฝากไว้ใน House Bank คืนในวันเดินทางกลับ

การนํานักเรียนออกนอกโรงเรียน หากผู้ปกครองต้องการนํานักเรียนออกนอกโรงเรียน ผู้ปกครองจะต้องแจ้งความประสงค์โดยการแฟกซ์จดหมายถึงผู้อํานวยการแคมป์ หรืออาจารย์ประจําหอ มาที่ 076 239 040 ล่วงหน้าอย่างน้อย 2 วัน และลงชื่อในสมุดลงชื่อเข้า-ออกประจําหอพักทุกครั้งที่พานักเรียนออกนอกบริเวณโรงเรียน

การทดสอบเข้าโรงเรียนนานาชาติบริติช ภูเก็ต ภาคปกต ิ โรงเรียนจะจัดสอบเป็นพิเศษสําหรับนักเรียนที่สนใจเรียนต่อเข้าโรงเรียนนานาชาติบริติช ภูเก็ต ในวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 25 กรกฎาคม 2556 โดยมีค่าธรรมเนียมการสอบคนละ 5,000 บาท หากท่านต้องการสมัครสอบท่านสามารถแจ้งความประสงค์ได้ที่แผนกการตลาด หมายเลขโทรศัพท์ 076 335 555 ต่อ 1105 (คุณวิราวรรณ)

กฎระเบียบขณะเข้าค่าย เพื่อความเป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อย ความปลอดภัย และเพื่อให้ทุกคนอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างมีความสุข ขอให้นักเรียนปฏิบัติตามกฎระเบียบดังต่อไปนี้- นักเรียนต้องมีความรับผิดชอบต่อตนเองและหน้าที่ ที่ต้องปฏิบัติตลอดเวลาที่เข้าแคมป์- นักเรียนต้องตรงต่อเวลาในการเข้าชั้นเรียนหรือทํากิจกรรมใด ๆ - นักเรียนต้องมีความเคารพต่อสถานที่ ไม่ทิ้งขยะในบริเวณโรงเรียนหรือสถานที่ทํากิจกรรมใด ๆ- นักเรียนต้องมีความเคารพต่อผู้อื่น ไม่ส่งเสียงดังรบกวนผู้อื่น- นักเรียนต้องไม่รับประทานอาหารขณะอยู่ในอาคารเรียน- นักเรียนต้องใส่เสื้อแคมป์ที่โรงเรียนจัดให้ขณะเข้าเรียน หรือทํากิจกรรมทั้งในและนอกโรงเรียน - นักเรียนต้องสวมใส่รองเท้ากีฬาในการทํากิจกรรมกีฬา - ห้ามนักเรียนชายเข้าไปในหอพักนักเรียนหญิง หรือนักเรียนหญิงเข้าไปในหอพักนักเรียนชาย ยกเว้นได้รับอนุญาตจากอาจารย์ประจําพอพัก- ห้ามนักเรียนออกนอกบริเวณโรงเรียนโดยลําพัง หากมีผู้ปกครองมารับออกนอกบริเวณโรงเรียนต้องได้รับอนุญาตจากผู้อํานวยการแคมป์หรืออาจารย์ประจําหอพัก

- เมื่อเดินทางออกไปทํากิจกรรมนอกโรงเรียน นักเรียนจะต้องเชื่อฟังครูอาจารย์ ให้จับกลุ่มอยู่กับเพื่อน ๆ เพื่อป้องกันการพลัดหลง ห้ามออกนอกเส้นทางโดยลําพัง และต้องตรงต่อเวลาที่นัดหมาย

ผู้ปกครองที่ต้องการเข้ามาเยี่ยมนักเรียน กรุณาแลกบัตรเยี่ยมชมที่พนักงานรักษาความปลอดภัย ณ ประตูทางเข้าของโรงเรียน

เมื่อสิ้นสุดกิจกรรมการเข้าแคมป์ในวันสุดท้าย นักเรียนจะได้รับประกาศนียบัตร CD รูปภาพ และหนังสือแคมป์ เพื่อเป็นที่ระลึก

ข้อมูลการเดินทางการเดินทางโดยเครื่องบินจากกรุงเทพมหานคร ผู้ปกครองสามารถจองตั๋วเครื่องบินกับห้างหุ้นส่วน
