SECTION1:PROGRAMOBJECTIVESThegraduateprogramprovidesstudentswithscholarlytraininginEnglishlanguageandliterature.EncounteringcoursesthatspanthefullexperienceofworksintheEnglishlanguage–fromOldEnglishtoMarkTwainandGertrudeStein,andfromChaucerandShakespearetocontemporaryandpostcolonialwriting–studentsintheprogramhavetheopportunitytopursuespecializationsinawidevarietyofliteraryfieldsandinthestudyofrhetoricandcomposition.ResponsivetointerdisciplinaryinterestsandtoallofthetheoreticaldiscoursesthatconnectthestudyofEnglishlanguageandliteraturetootherliteraturesandcultures,theprogramiscommittedtoequippingstudentswiththedisciplinesandmethodsofliteraryandrhetoricalanalysis,aswellascompositionpedagogy,thatwillpreparethemprofessionallyforthecareerstheyseek.Graduatestudentshaveanactiveroleintheprogram.BothourM.A.andPh.D.studentsselecttheirownexaminationadvisorsandhaveaprominentvoiceinshapingtheirexaminationandthesiscommittees.ReinforcingthatvoiceistheEnglishGraduateOrganization(EGO),anactivegroupthatworkswithfacultytopromotetheprofessionalizationofgraduatestudentsthroughworkshopsandparticipationindepartmentalcommittees.EGOalsoplanssocialeventsthroughouttheacademicyear.Studentswhocompletethemaster’sprograminEnglishwill:

A. demonstrateafoundationalknowledgeofliterary/rhetoricalhistories,aesthetics,cultures,andemergingareasofinquiry,includinganawarenessofculturaldiversitywithinliterarytraditions

B. demonstrateknowledgeofresearchexpectations,andoftheoreticalapproaches,requisiteforadvancedstudyinEnglish,includingdemonstratingscholarlyintegrityandtheuseofappropriateresearchresourcesandtools

C. demonstrateanabilitytoengageproductivelywithrelevantcriticaldebatesthroughwrittenandspokenarguments

StudentswhocompletethedoctoralprograminEnglishwill:A. demonstrateabroadknowledgeofliteraryhistories,aesthetics,cultures,andemerging

areasofinquiry,includinganawarenessofculturaldiversitywithinliterarytraditionsB. demonstrateproficiencyandscholarlyintegrityinformulatingwrittenandspoken

D. demonstratetheabilitytoconceptualize,develop,andbringtosuccessfulcompletionanoriginal,sustained,andcoherentindependentresearchproject(e.g.,thedissertation)thatcontributestoone’sfieldofspecialization

StudentOutcomesAssessmentThedepartmentdeploysvariousformsofassessmenttomonitorthesuccessofitsdegreeprogramsinmeetingprogrammaticgoals.Theseassessmentprotocols,promulgatedin2015andrevisedin2017,arerootedinabroadspectrumofoutcome-basedevaluativemeasures,andincludeaproactivefeedbackloopthatbeginswithissuesraisedinvariousfora,includingEGO,runsthroughthedepartment’sgraduatecommittee,andfromtheredevelopsintopolicyproposalsandprogrammaticchangepetitionsthatareconsideredandacteduponbythefulltenure-trackfacultyactingasacommitteeofthewhole.

SECTION3:PROGRAMADMISSIONPOLICIES&PRACTICESGeneralDegree-seekinggraduatestudentsareonlyadmittedinthefallsemester.Thedepartment’sfocus,overthepastsevenyears,hasbeentoaccepthigh-ability,full-timestudentsandtoprovidethemwithfinancialsupportintheformofagraduateassistantship.ThedepartmenthasnodirectM.A.toPhDprogram,therefore,currentmaster’sstudentswhowishtocontinueonintothePhDprogrammustre-applyforadmission.However,theirapplicationsreceivespecialconsideration.Part-timestudentsareonlyadmittedbyexception;typically,part-timestudentswouldbemembersofthe1818ACCteachingcorpsorSLUstaffmembersseekinganadvanceddegree.PrerequisitesForthoseseekingadmissiontotheM.A.program,aB.A.inEnglish(oratleast18hoursofsuccessfulworkinupper-divisionEnglishcourses)isnormallyrequired.ApplicantswithdifferentmajorswhopossessstrongbackgroundsinEnglishandAmericanliteraturewillalsobeconsidered.TheordinaryprerequisiteforthoseseekingadmissiontothePh.D.programisanM.A.inEnglish,thoughstudentswithM.A.sfromotherfieldswithstrongbackgroundsinEnglishandAmericanliteraturewillalsoreceiveconsideration.OnlystudentswhohavecompletedorwillsoonbecompletinganM.A.degreewillbeconsideredforthePh.D.program.StudentswhocompleteanM.A.atSLUmaybeconsideredforthePh.D.programasinternalcandidates(seebelow).

NormativeExpectationsforAdmission

Thedepartmentseekscreativeandambitiousgraduatestudentswhohaveachievedhighlevelsofdistinctionandsophisticationatwell-regardedcollegesanduniversitieswithrigorous

B.A./M.A.programs.Whiletheevaluationofcandidatefilesisholistic,admittedstudentsontheSt.LouiscampustypicallyhavehighGPAs(3.7andaboveinEnglish);havescoredatorabovethe90thpercentileintheVerbalportionoftheGREGeneralTestand/or4.5oraboveontheWritingportionofthetest;andshouldbeabletoidentifyafield/areaofstudy,apossiblethesis/dissertationtopic,andspecificfacultyinthedepartmentwithwhomthestudentswouldliketowork.Specificadmissionrequirementsmayvaryovertime,includingtheapplicationdeadline.Theserequirementsmaybefoundonthedepartmentalwebsite.Currently,applicationrequirementsinclude:● Anofficialtranscriptofone’sundergraduaterecordand,forapplicantstothePh.D.program,

graduaterecord. ● GREGeneralTestresults(theGRESubjectTestisnotrequired). ● Arecentcurriculumvitae. ● Threelettersofrecommendationassessingtheapplicant’spromiseingraduatestudies. ● Astatement,in750wordsorless,oftheapplicant’sprofessionalandintellectualgoals,and

interestingraduatestudiesinEnglish.Thisstatementshouldaddressfourpoints:thespecificfieldofEnglishstudiesinwhichoneisinterested;howtheapplicantwouldliketocontributetoexistingresearchandcriticismintheirareaofinterest;thecriticalandscholarlyapproachestoliteraturetheapplicanthasfoundmostproductive;andtheSLUfacultymemberswithwhomoneislookingtowork.Whileanindividual’splansmaywellchangeasaresultoffurtherstudy,thisstatementwillhelpthegraduatecommitteeassesstheapplicant’sgraspofthefieldaswellastheapplicant’sabilitytodescribetheirideascoherentlyandcompellingly.

ProtocolforSLUMaster’sStudentsSeekingtoTransitiontothePh.D.ProgramCurrentmaster’sstudentsseekingtotransitiontothePh.D.programarerequiredtoprovidefourdocuments:1.apetitiontoapplytothePh.D.program2.aone-pagestatementofintentionthatincludesthedoctoraltrackthestudentwishestopursueandthefacultymember(s)underwhomthepersonwishestowritetheirdissertation3.awritingsamplefromthestudent’smaster’sprogram,preferablyintheintendedareaofdoctoralstudyand4.acurrentcurriculumvita.Recommendationlettersandtranscriptsarenotrequired.TheDirectorofGraduateStudieswillobtainthestudent’sM.A.transcriptandwillalsoconductaninformalpollofboththestudent’sM.A.instructorsandanyotherdepartmentalfacultymemberswhohaveinteractedwiththestudentinasubstantialwayandwishtocommentontheiradmissibility.AllapplicationmaterialsaresubmitteddirectlytotheDirectorofGraduateStudies,notthroughtheapplicationportal.Thegraduatecommitteewillreviewthesematerials,alongwiththefourdocumentsmentionedabove.

Policyfor1818ACCTeachersAsnotedabove,certainexceptionsaremadeforhighschoolteacherswhoparticipateintheuniversity’s1818ACCdual-creditprograminrecognitionofthefactthattheseteachersareofferingcollege-levelworktotheirstudentsundertheSLUbanner.Theapplicationprocessfor1818ACCEnglishinstructorsseekingadmissiontoSaintLouisUniversityisdescribedbelowinthreecategories:● ThoseWishingtoTakeOneorTwoCourses.1818ACCEnglishinstructorsseekingtotake

oneortwograduateclassesinEnglishatSaintLouisUniversitymaydosoonaspace-availablebasis,withpermissionoftheinstructor.

● ThoseWishingtoPursueEitherandMAoraPh.DDegree.1818ACCEnglishinstructorsseekingadmissiontothemaster’sordoctoralprograminEnglishshould,ingeneral,followtheadmissionguidelinesthatappearonthedepartmentalwebsite.However,inconsiderationofcandidates’experienceinthe181ACCprogram,theywillnotberequiredtoprovideacademictranscripts.

SECTION4:CURRICULAROVERVIEW

MasterofArtsTheM.A.inEnglishrequires30hoursofcourseworkbeyondtheB.Aandisnormallyatwo-yearprogram.TherearethreeoptionsfortheM.A.degree:acoursework-onlyM.A.,forthosewhoseekaterminalM.A.degree;anM.A.includinganessay,andanM.A.includingathesis,bothofwhicharemeantforthosewhoplantogoontodoctoralstudy.Inthecoursework-onlyoption,studentstake30hoursofcoursework.Intheessayoption,studentssubstituteanessayfor3hoursofcoursework.Inthethesisoption,studentssubstituteathesisfor6hoursofcourseworkselectatopicinconsultationwithadirector,havetheircompletedworkreviewedbyacommitteeconsistingofthedirectorandtwootherfacultyreaders,andareexaminedorallyonboththethesisandthegeneralM.A.readinglistinseparateone-hourexaminations.RequiredCoursesfortheM.A.Regardlessofwhichoptiontheyselect,allmaster’sstudentsarerequiredto:● Takethefollowingthreecourses,preferablyintheirfirstyear:MethodsofLiteraryResearch(ENGL5000),LiteraryTheory(ENGL5110),andTeachingWriting(ENGL5010)(thelatteronlyiftheyaregraduateteachingassistants).

● Take12hoursofcourseworkinfourofthefollowingfivefields:Anglo-Saxonand/orMedievalLiterature;Renaissance/EarlyModernLiterature;Literatureofthelong19thcentury;Modernand/orcontemporaryliterature;andRhetoricand/orComposition.

● Submitanelectroniccourseworkdossier,tothedirectorofgraduatestudiesjustbeforetheiroralexams,whichshouldincludeeithertheirbesttwoseminarpapersortheirthesis.Thisisneededinordertofacilitateprogramassessment.

● Passaone-houroralexamination,neartheendoftheirsecondyear,onworksdrawnfromalistthatismadeavailabletothemattheoutsetoftheirprogramofstudy.

DegreeConcentrations

ItispossibletoobtainaconcentrationincombinationwithanM.A.orPh.D.inEnglish.Theconcentrationsmostcommonlytakenbyourstudentsare:

● GraduateConcentrationinMedievalandRenaissanceStudies.TheCenterforMedievalandRenaissanceStudiesoffersaGraduateConcentrationinMedievalStudiesthatallowsstudentsenrolledinhumanitiesgraduatedegreeprogramstoacquireaninterdisciplinaryunderstandingoftheirchosenfields.Theconcentrationhelpstobroadenthestudent'sintellectualvista,exposinghim/hertothemethodologies,practices,andperspectivesofotherallieddisciplines.Inaddition,theconcentrationcanprovideapowerfuladvantagetostudentsastheypursueadditionalstudiesorprofessionalpositions

● InterdisciplinaryMinorinWomen’sandGenderStudies.TheGraduateConcentrationinWomen’sandGenderStudiesprovidesgraduatestudentstheopportunitytointegratethestudyofgenderissuesintotheirchosenfieldofstudy.The9graduate-levelcredithoursrequiredincludetheFeministTheorycourse(offeredinthefall),theFeministEpistemologiescourse(springsemester),andagraduate-levelcoursethatiscross-listedwithWomen'sandGenderStudies.

● CertificateinUniversityTeachingSkills.TheReinertCenterforTransformativeTeaching&Learningofferstwoprogramsforgraduatestudents:theParticipationConcentrationinUniversityTeachingSkillsandthemorecomprehensiveconcentrationinUniversityTeachingSkills,eachofwhichrequiresaminimumoftwosemestersforcompletion.

Thedoctoralqualifyingexam Thedoctoralexamhasawrittenandanoralcomponent.Theexamprocesstypicallybeginsinthestudent’sthirdyearwithadissertationprospectusturnedintothecommitteefourtosixweeksinadvanceofthewrittenexam.● Thewrittencomponentofthedoctoralexamtakestheformofacompetencyessay,writtenoverthecourseofsevendays,inresponsetoasetofpromptsdevelopedbythethreefacultymembersonthestudent’sdissertationcommittee.Thepromptsarebasedonthe50textsononeofthe10doctoralreadinglistsaswellas20supplementarytexts.The10doctoralreadingslistsare(seeappendixforactuallists):

● Withinoneweekfollowingsuccessfulcompletionoftheoralexamination,thedissertationcommitteemeetswiththestudenttodiscussandconsidergivingfinalapprovaltothedissertationprospectus.Ifthestudentperformsacceptably,theyachievetwogoalssimultaneously:passingthedoctoralcompetencyexamandhavingthedissertationprospectusapprovedbythedissertationcommittee.Thestudentthenfilesthe(nowapproved)copyofthedissertationprospectuswiththegraduatedirectorandproceedstowritethedissertation.Completeddissertationsareassessedbyeachstudent’sdissertationcommitteeandareformallyacceptedafterapublicdefense.M.A.andPh.D.advisingworksheetswhichallowstudentstotracktheirdegreeprogressmaybefoundintheAppendicestothishandbook.

SECTION5:THESTRUCTUREOFTHEMASTER’SPROGRAMYear1:

DepartmentalGuidelinesfortheM.A.ExaminationInordertograduatewithamaster’sdegreeinEnglish,allcandidatesmustpassaone-houroralexamcoveringalistof12literarytextsand1influentialtheoreticalorcriticalworkwhichthestudentselectsfromamong10options.Thislist,whichappearsintheappendix,isdeterminedeverythreeyearsbythedepartmentasawhole,representsavarietyofperiodsandgenres,andismadeavailabletoenteringM.A.studentswhentheybegintheirprogramsofstudy.Theoutstandingcandidatewilldemonstratetheirabilitytomovewithdexterityamongclosereadingsofthetexts,thetexts’criticalheritage,andthelist’sculturalandhistoricalcontexts.TheexaminingcommitteefortheM.A.oralexamconsistsofthreefacultymemberswhoseexpertisecoversarangeofareaswithinthediscipline;itisincumbentuponthedegreecandidate,intheirsecondyearofstudy,toapproachandsuccessfullyidentifythreefacultymemberswhoareamenabletoservingastheexaminers.

SECTION6:THESTRUCTUREOFTHEPH.D.PROGRAMThetextthatfollowsdescribesthestructureofthedoctoralprogram,includingaproposedtimelinefordegreecompletionandexaminationprocedures.AnunderlyingexpectationofthetimelineisthatthePh.D.willtypicallybecompletedinfiveyears.

Year1:

● Anon-SaintLouisUniversityfacultymemberorsomeoneoutsideofthemajorfieldmayserveasco-chairofastudent’sDoctoralCommittee.Inorderforanon-SaintLouisUniversityfacultymembertoserveonaDoctoralcommittee,thepersonmusthaveaterminaldegreeinthefieldand/orhavesignificantexpertiseorexperienceofparticularrelevancetostudents’dissertation.Non-SLUcommitteemembers(orSLUfacultywithoutGraduateFacultystatus)mustbeapprovedtoserveonanadhocbasisbytheassociatedeanordirectorofthecollege,school,orcenter.Approvalsmaybemadeuponwrittenrequestbythedissertationcommitteechair.Therequestshouldincludeabriefrationaleforthemember’sserviceandtheproposedmember’sCV.

days,inresponsetoaquestionbasedonthetextsonthepreparatoryreadinglistsandselectedbythestudentfromasetofchoices(typicallythree.developedbytheexaminersintheirmajorfield.(Forexample,astudentwhoreceivestheirquestionsatnoononaMondaywouldberesponsibleforsubmittingthecompetencyessaybythefollowingMondayatnoon).Thesuccessfulcompetencyessaywillbeapproximately20-25pagesinlengthandwillpresentanargumentthat: ● offersandanalyzesspecificsupportingtextualexampleschosenfromthestudent’s

preparatoryreadinglists; ● situatestheanalysiswithinaesthetic,cultural,andhistoricalframesintheparticular

field; ● identifiesmajorscholarlyapproachesthathavebeenappliedtothisproblem/

question;and ● demonstratesfamiliaritywithappropriateresearchresources.

● Withinsevendaysthethreemembersofthewrittenexamcommitteewilldetermineifthestudenthaspassedthewrittenexam.Iftheydesignatethecompetencyessaya“pass,”thestudentthenappliestotaketheoralportionoftheexam.Ifthethreemembersofthewrittenexamcommitteearenotunanimousaboutdesignatingthecompetencyessayapass,theymustmeettodetermine,bymajorityvotefollowingdiscussion,whetherthestudentpassed.Shouldastudentfailthewrittenportionoftheexamination,theexammayberepeatedasecondtime.Thesecondattemptmaynotbescheduledwithinthesameacademictermasthefirst.Astudentwhofailsthesecondattemptwillnotbepermittedtocontinueinthedoctoralprogram.

● Thestudentmustnowpreparefortheiroralexam.ThestudentmayonlyscheduletheiroralexamaftertheAssociateDeanforGraduateEducationorCenterDirectorapprovesthestudent’sexaminationcommittee.Toscheduletheexam,thestudentmustcompletetheDoctoralOralExaminationFormandthisformmustbereceivedbytheDoctoralCandidacySpecialistatleasttwoweekspriortothedateoftheexam.Therefore,thisformmustbesenttotheDean’sofficebeforethestudenttakesthewrittenexam,withtheoutcomeofthewrittenexamleftblankonthatform.Uponreceiptoftheform,theDoctoralCandidacySpecialistwillsendadecisionresultformtothecommitteechairpersonpriortotheexamorproposaldefense.Noexaminationorproposaldefensewillbepermittedwithouttheresultforminhand.

● Attheconclusionoftheexam,thefiveexaminersmeettodiscusswhetherornotthestudenthaspassedtheoralexamination;passingrequiresapositivevoteofthemajority.TheonlyinformationtransmittedtotheOfficeofGraduateEducationisthefinaldecision,includinganynotationofpassingwithdistinction.Theresultformmustbesignedanddatedbyallcommitteemembers.Foranycommitteemembernotphysicallypresent,thecommitteechairmayprovideaproxysignature.

● Astudentwhofailstheoralexamdoesnotneedtoretakethewrittenexambeforeretakingtheoralexam.Shouldastudentfailtheoralexam,theexammayberepeatedasecondtime.Thesecondattemptmaynotbescheduledwithinthesameacademictermasthefirst.Anoutsidecommitteemember(aSaintLouisUniversityfacultymemberfromanotherprogram)mustbepresentatthesecondexam/proposaldefense.Astudentwhofailsthesecondattemptwillnotbepermittedtocontinueinthedoctoralprogram.

PreparingforDoctoralQualifyingExaminations.

Adoctoralstudentpreparingtotakequalifyingexaminationsshouldspeakwiththeirmentorandothercommitteememberspriortotakingthewrittenportionoftheexamnotonlytoclarifyexpectationsforthewrittentestbutalsotoensurethatthecandidatepossessesaclearunderstandingofthewayinwhichthesubsequentoralexaminationwillbestructured.Somestudentshavealsofoundthatgroupstudywithothersinthesameareaofspecializationhasprovedusefulinpreparingforqualifyingexams.Itisrecommendedthatstudentsarrangemockexamswithstudentpeersandrequestpracticequestionsfromfaculty.

Afterhavingpassedthewrittenexam,thestudentshouldagainreviewexpectationsfortheoralwiththeircommitteebothinthecontextofanswersonthewrittentest,sincethewrittenexaminationoftenservesasaspringboardforquestioningduringtheoral,andtoarriveatapracticalunderstandingofthedemandsplacedononetakinganoralexamwhich,unlikethewrittentest,requiresacandidatetomoveamongshiftingtopics,broadandnarrow.Atthetimeoftheoralexamination,thementorshouldmakeavailabletothestudent,forreferencepurposes,acopyoftheirlistwiththedatesremoved.Ofcourse,theobligationofknowingthepublicationdatesandbasicplotelementsofeachitemonthelist,resideswiththecandidate,whoshouldalsobeabletoname,anddemonstrateanunderstandingoftheimplicationsof,theformsofindividualworks.Thedepartmentalsooffersthesepracticalsuggestionstoguidecandidates’preparation:

● Whileitisprudentforstudentstoconsiderhowcommitteemembers’academicinterestsmightimpacttheirchoiceofexaminationquestions,writtenandoral,studentsprovidinganswerstothesequestionsshouldbepreparedto—indeed,areencouragedandexpectedto—articulatetheirownideas,readings,andunderstandings,nottostatewhattheybelievecommitteemembersmightwanttohear.

● Studentsshouldbepreparedtodiscussworksbothindividuallyandinrelationtooneanother.

● Developingandbeingpreparedtodemonstrateasoundgraspofliteraryhistory,includingmovementsandtrends,isalsoimportant.

AdvancingtoCandidacyWithinoneweekfollowingsuccessfulcompletionoftheoralexamination,thedissertationcommitteewillmeetwiththestudenttodiscussandgivefinalapprovaltotheprospectus.Ifthestudentperformsacceptably,theyachievetwogoalssimultaneously:passingthedoctoralcompetencyexamandhavingthedissertationprospectusapprovedbythedissertationcommittee.Thestudentisthenviewedbythedepartmentashavingadvancedtocandidacy.

Years4-5:Thestudentcompletesadissertation,whichdemonstratesoriginalresearchandtypicallyrunstobetween200and225pages.Thisnormallyoccursbetweentheendofthe4thandtheendofthe5thyearofdoctoralstudy.Departmentalguidelinesregardingthecirculationofcompleteddraftsofdissertationstofaculty,thedistributionoffacultyfeedback,theschedulingofthedissertationdefense,andtheformatofthedefensefollow.

WritingtheDissertationTheguidelinesbelowaimtoestablishaclearandconsistenttimelineforstudentsastheywrite,revise,andpreparetodefendtheirdissertations.Forthecandidatetosetadateforthepublicdefense,boththedissertationcommitteeandthecandidateshouldhavecompletedthefollowingstagesofreading,review,andcorrection:1. Thedissertationdirectorhasprimaryauthoritytosupervisethestudent'sresearchand

writing.However,committeemembersshouldhaveconsiderableinputthroughoutthedraftingofthedissertation.Asindividualchaptersareapprovedbythedirector,thecandidatethenwillsubmitthosechapterstotherestofthecommitteeforfurthercommentandguidance.2Committeememberswillforwardtheircommentsandrevisionsuggestionsbothtothedissertationdirectorandtothecandidate.

2. Whenthecandidateandthedissertationdirectoragreethatthedissertationasawholeisreadyforexamination,thecandidatewillsubmitacopyofthedissertationtotheirentirecommittee.Thiscopywillconformtoguidelinesinthemostrecenteditionoftheuniversity'sPoliciesandProceduresforThesis,Project,andDissertationFormattingandutilizethemostrecenteditionofTheMLAStyleManual;inthedetailsofitspresentation(e.g.,notes,citations),thedocumentwillbeformattedthoroughlyandprofessionallyasifitwerethefinalversion.

3. Threetosixweeks(threeasaminimum,sixasamaximum)afterthesubmissionofthisdocument,thedissertationdirectorwillcallameetingoftheentirecommitteeandthecandidatetodiscussthesubmitteddraft.● Atthisstage,anyfinalconcernsaboutthedissertationshouldbeaired.Committee

►Usetheir6externalhourstotakecourses,eitheratSLUoranotherareauniversity,thatmaycounttowardtheirdegreeprogram,butarenotin/aboutEnglishliterature,culture,media,orwriting.Beforetakingsuchcourses,however,studentsmustpetitiontohavethemcounttowardtheirdegreeprograms;studentsshouldbeawarethatnotallpetitionswillbeapproved.Apetitioningstudentwillneedtoprovethatsuchcourseworkisintegrallyrelatedtotheirdegreeprograminsomesignificantway.Allsuchpetitionsmustreceiveapprovalbythedirectorofgraduatestudiespriortoenrollmentifcreditistobegranted.Thisapprovalprocessinvolves:

areauniversity,thatwillnotfulfilladegreerequirement.Beforetakingsuchcourses,however,studentsmustmakecertainthattheyaremakingtimelyprogresstowarddegreecompletionandthattheyhavethepermissionoftheirmentors.

TheForeignLanguageRequirementPriortotakingtheirqualifyingexaminations,everystudentinthedoctoralprogrammustcertifyareadingcompetenceinscholarshipdrawnfromonemodernforeignlanguagerelevanttotheirliterarystudy.French,German,andSpanisharethemodernlanguagesinwhichtheuniversityhasbeenabletoprovideregularsupportandinstruction,butotherrelevantlanguagesareequallyacceptable,includingAmericanSignLanguage(ASL).AdditionallanguagecompetenceisrequiredofstudentsworkinginMedievalorEarlyModernBritishLiterature,whomustdemonstratetheirabilitytoreadliteraturewritteninLatin,classicalGreek,or,uponspecialrequest,Hebrew.Coursestakentodemonstratelanguageproficiencydonotcounttowardthe24hoursofrequiredcourseworkforthedoctorate.Therearefourwaystodemonstrateone’sreadingcompetenceinaforeignlanguage:

1. AstudentmaymeettheforeignlanguagerequirementbydocumentingthattheydemonstratedreadingcompetenceasanM.A.student.DocumentationofthisproficiencyissubjecttothereviewandapprovaloftheDirectorofGraduateStudies.Thedirector’sdecisionissubjecttoreviewbythedepartmentchairperson.

2. AstudentmayalsomeettherequirementbyperformingsatisfactorilyinanacceleratedreadingcourseinthelanguagedesignedforSLUgraduatestudentsbytheDepartmentofLanguages,Literatures,&Cultures,whichcanprovideinformationregardingwhenthesecoursesareoffered.Studentswithtuitionscholarshiphoursmayapplythehourstothesedesignated5000-levelclasses.

3. Athirdwaytodemonstrateone’slanguagecompetenceistosuccessfullycompletea4000-levelcourseintheDepartmentofLanguages,Literatures,&Cultureswithaheavyconcentrationofreadingintheoriginallanguage.ThosewishingtoclaimcreditforsuchacoursemustpetitiontheDirectorofGraduateStudiesinwritingandprovideacoursesyllabusandcoursegrade.Thedirector’sdecisionissubjecttoreviewbythedepartmentchairperson.

4. Finally,studentscanelecttodemonstratelanguageproficiencythroughatwo-hourexaminationadministeredbytheEnglishdepartmentandgradedbycourtesyoftheDepartmentofLanguages,Literatures,&Cultures.Typically,theDirectorofGraduateStudieswillchooseeitherascholarlymonograph,orachapterfromascholarlybook,orasubstantialscholarlyarticleofatleast25printedpagesintherelevantmodernlanguageandpresentsit,severalweeksinadvanceoftheproposedexaminationtime.Inmostcases,thedirectorwillconsultwithamemberoftheEnglishdepartmentwhoisfluentinthelanguageofthetextbeforemakingadeterminationofthetext’sutilityforcompetency-testingpurposes.StudentsoptingtodemonstratereadingproficiencyinLatinorGreekmayeithernegotiateapprovalofatexttheyhaveselectedorworkfromasettextannouncedbytheEnglishdepartmentatthebeginningofeachcalendaryear.StudentsoptingforHebrewmustmaketheirintentionknownatleastfourweekspriortothedesireddateofthetranslationexamination,andasuitabletextwillbenegotiated.Onthedayscheduledfortheexamination,thestudentisgivenapassageofapproximatelyonetooneandhalfpagesfromthedesignatedtexttotranslateandisexpectedtoprepareagrammaticallyaccurate,idiomaticallysensibletranslationintwohourswiththeaidofnomaterialsotherthanadictionary.Astudentchoosingtheexaminationoptionmayelecteithertowritethetranslationlonghandortoproduceitelectronically,butmustindicateinadvancewhichwritingmediumtheywilluse.NOTE:Anystudentchoosingtheexaminationoptionmustarrangeanexaminationdateatleastonefullmonthinadvanceofthedateonwhichtheywouldprefertotaketheirdoctoralexams.TheEnglishdepartmentreliesupontheDepartmentofLanguages,Literatures,&Culturestogradetheexamination,andampletimemustbeallowedforthereceipt,grading,andreturnofthetranslation.

GuidelinesforGraduateStudentTeachingofCompositionCourses

Anyonewishingtoteachinthedepartment’swritingprogrammusthavesuccessfullycompletedorbeenrolledinENGL5010,TheTeachingofWriting,ormusthavesuccessfullycompletedanequivalentcourseatanotheruniversity.ThenormalcompositionassignmentisENGL1900,AdvancedStrategiesofRhetoricandResearch.Thedepartment’s“stretch”compositionsequence,ENGL1500/1900,isprimarilyassignedtoexperiencedteachers,includingdoctoralstudentswithstrongteachingrecordswhohaverolledoffassistantship.GraduateinstructorsmayalsobeassignedsectionsofEnglish4000,BusinessandProfessionalWriting.ThosewhowouldliketoteachEnglish4000shouldindicatetheirinteresttotheWritingProgramCoordinator.Sometimes,doctoralstudentswhohaveadvancedtocandidacyandarenotonextensionwillbeassignedtwocourses,whichmayincludetwowritingcoursesorawritingandaliteraturecourse.

ENGL1900and4000aretypicallyofferedinthesummeraswellasthefallandspringsemesters,whileEnglish1500isprimarilyofferedinthefallsemester.Summerteachingisusuallyassigned

● AllPh.D.studentsmustenrollin12credithoursofENGL6990,DissertationResearch,duringtheirprogramsofstudy.Doctoralstudentsareencouragedtodistributeresearchregistrationsoverseveralacademicterms,enrollingincreditseachtermthatarecommensuratewiththeanticipatedintensityofresearchinvolvement.Theminimumresearchregistrationforanacademictermisonecredituntilthe12creditsarecompleted.Onceastudenthasaccrued12creditstheymayremainactivelyenrolledbyregisteringforzerohoursof6990.

AssistantshipFundingRestrictionsNormally,afull-timeEnglishgraduatestudentholdsanassistantshipfortwoyearswhilepursuingamaster’sdegreeandfiveyearswhilepursuingthedoctorate.However,asixthyearoffundingforadoctoralstudentispossibleprovidedthatthreeconditionsexist:

● fundingforthispurposeisavailabletothedepartment; ● thestudenthasadvancedtocandidacy;and ● thestudent’sadvisor,thegraduateprogramdirector,andthedepartmentchairpersonall

approvetheawardingofanadditionalyear. Doctoralstudentsontime-to-degreeextensionsarenormallyineligibleforadditionalassistantshipfunding;however,inexceptionalcases,thedepartmenthassuccessfullyobtainedspecialconsiderationforsuchstudentsfromtheOfficeofGraduateEducation.Inunusualcircumstances,thedepartmentmayalsopetitiontheOfficeofGraduateEducationtopermittheawardingofathirdyearoffundingforanM.A.studentswritingtheses,althoughthiswouldbeunlikelytooccur.

ComplianceIssuesforThoseonAssistantship/FellowshipStudentsonassistantshiporfellowshipshouldcarefullyreviewtheGraduateEducationdocumentsentitled“PoliciesandProceduresManualforGraduateAssistantsandFellows,”and“RegulationsGoverningGraduateAwards/Appointments”availableonthewebsiteoftheOfficeofGraduateEducationKeythingstokeepinmindinclude:

● Graduateassistantswhoareperformingsatisfactorilyintheirstudiesandassistantshipdutiesareeligibletocontinuetheirappointmentfromsemestertosemester.

ExpectedAcademicProgressAllstudentsmatriculatinginauniversitygraduateprogramareexpectedtodemonstrateappropriateandcontinuingprogresstowardthecompletionoftheirmaster’sordoctoraldegrees.IntheEnglishdepartment,theprincipalindicatorsofappropriateandcontinuingprogressare:

2. Theoralexamwillbescheduledforapproximately1.5hours.Inthefirst15minutes,thestudentwillmakeaformalpresentationwhichshouldconsistofanargumentaboutthesignificanceofthelistoftextsandhowtheworksconnectwithoneanother.Itcanconsistofatalkfromnotesoraconference-paperstylepresentation.Visualmaterials,suchasslides,maybeused.

3. Theremainderoftheexamwillconsistofquestionsfromthecommittee,whichmaybequestionsabouttheformalpresentationbutmayalsobeaboutanyaspectsoftheindividualworksonthelist.
